In recognition of Older Americans Month and Medicare’s importance in the lives of older Kansans, officials with the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) announced a new series of Answers for Older Kansans: Medicare Basics seminars.

Karen Mayse, a certified Medicare benefits counselor with more than ten years of experience in explaining Medicare to Kansans, will present each of the five seminars slated between Friday and June 3.

Medicare is health insurance for people who are age 65 or better and for people who qualify because of disabilities. The two-part Zoom Medicare Basics seminar series provides an easy-to-understand overview of Medicare, steps to enrollment and explains how Medicare works with employers’ insurance. It also provides information about Extra Help and other Medicare Savings Programs and addresses participants’ questions.

To register, people may go to <a href="http://www.ncfhaaa.com/seminars">www.ncfhaaa.com/seminars</a> or call 800-432-2703 the day before the event. The link to the Zoom event will be sent after the registration is received.

Area agency announces May Medicare Zoom seminars

OTTAWA COUNTY -- The Kansas Department of Transportation has begun road repair on northbound U.S. Highway 81 in Ottawa County. 

Repairs were to begin today at mile marker 184 and continue approximately one-half mile north to the Ottawa/Cloud County line.

Traffic is reduced to one 12-foot lane through the work zone at a reduced speed. Drivers should expect minor delays, not exceeding five minutes.

Work is expected to be completed by June, weather permitting.

Saline County: No new COVID-19 cases to report

According to a story published Monday by the <a href="https://www.goshennews.com/news/forest-river-acquires-rev-group-s-shuttle-bus-lines/article_af25c78e-93c3-11ea-84ae-67efc89f50b5.html">the Goshen (Ind.) News</a>, Forest River Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway company, has purchased REV Group's shuttle bus brands Champion Bus, Federal Coach, World Trans, Krystal Coach, ElDorado and Goshen Coach. These brands are produced at plants in Salina and Imlay City, Mich.&nbsp;

Attempts by Salina Post to reach REV Group and Forest River Inc. were not successful.

A story published Friday by <a href="https://www.rvnews.com/rev-group-completes-sale-of-shuttle-bus-businesses-to-forest-river/">RV News</a>, noted that the sale was effective Friday.

“The divestiture of our shuttle bus business provides an opportunity to improve our portfolio profitability, reduce debt and renew our focus on reducing our leverage,” Rod Rushing, REV Group president and CEO, said in the RV News story.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to pay down outstanding borrowings under the REV Group’s ABL debt facility, RV News reported.

“We are committed to improving our operations to achieve best-in-class performance in each of our business segments,” Rushing said. “I appreciate the hard work and dedication of our shuttle business employees and wish them success.”

In a news release quoted in The Goshen News story, David Wright, president of the Forest River bus division, said, “We are excited to welcome Champion Bus and ElDorado to Forest River. Both organizations have built a history of integrity, quality and innovation and enjoy an excellent reputation in our industry today. As we navigate these challenging times, the addition of these historic and iconic brands to the Forest River family enhance our ability to provide products and a customer experience that is second to none. We look forward to working with our dealer partners as we better position Forest River’s shuttle bus divisions for the future.”

UPDATE: REV sells its El Dorado operation in Salina to Forest River Inc.

MCPHERSON -- McPherson County is holding steady at 26 confirmed COVID-19 cases, however one more of the cases has met recovery guidelines.

Of the 26 cases, 18 persons have met recovery guidelines set forth by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE, while one is currently hospitalized, according to information released this morning by the McPherson County Health Department (MCHD).

The department reminds residents that symptoms for COVID-19 appear 2-14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, shortness of breath, malaise, sore throat, chills, and diarrhea. If you develop any of these symptoms, contact your health care provider. You must stay home for at least 10 days after symptoms started or for 72 hours after fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and with significant improvement in symptoms, whichever is longer.

McPherson County residents who do not have a health care provider are encouraged to call the local hospital or the McPherson County Health Department at 620-241-1753 or email <a href="mailto:machd@mcphersoncountyks.us">machd@mcphersoncountyks.us</a>, the health department noted.

Additionally, KDHE and MCHD continue to mandate a 14-day home quarantine for Kansas if you have done any of the following.

•Traveled within the United States to any of the following states with known widespread community transmission.

-On or after March 23: Illinois, New Jersey

-On or after April 30: Massachusetts, Rhode Island

•Traveled internationally on or after March 15

•Traveled on a cruise ship or river cruise on or after March 15

MCPHERSON -- McPherson County is holding steady at 26 confirmed COVID-19 cases, however one more of the cases has met recovery guidelines.Of the 26 cases, 18 persons have met recovery guidelines set forth by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE, while one is currently hospitalized, according to information released this morning by the McPherson County Health Department (MCHD).The department reminds residents that symptoms for COVID-19 appear 2-14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, shortness of breath, malaise, sore throat, chills, and diarrhea. If you develop any of these symptoms, contact your health care provider. TOPEKA — Complete High School Maize, Maize Unified School District 266, was recognized as a 2020 Kansas School of Character on Tuesday.

Recognition is given though the Kansas Schools of Character Recognition Program and sponsoring organizations - <a href="http://Character.org">Character.org</a>, the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Smoky Hill Education Service Center.

Usually, the announcement is made during a special ceremony at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the announcement was made online and via social media platforms.

Complete High School Maize is one of 81 schools and seven school districts across the country to be certified by Character.org as 2020 State Schools of Character. The 2020 Kansas School of Character will now be considered for the highest distinction – National School of Character. The announcement will be made later this month by Character.org.

The State Schools of Character award program recognizes schools and districts that have worked to enhance social, emotional and character development. Character.org certifies schools and districts at the state level that demonstrate a dedicated focus on character development, which has been shown to have a positive effect on academic achievement, student behavior and school climate, according to <a href="http://character.org">character.org</a>. Character.org was founded in 1993 and is a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. Since its inception, Character.org’s Schools of Character program has impacted nearly 3 million students, staff members, parents and other community members.

Criteria for selection are based on Character.org’s ​11 Principles of Character, which include providing students with opportunities for moral action, fostering shared leadership and engaging families and communities as partners in the character-building effort.&nbsp;

📹Local, area schools receive state recognition

Property for sale at a west Salina business was rendered unsellable after burns and human excrement and urine were found inside.

Sometime between noon on Monday and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, unknown persons took up residence in two Sturdi Built sheds that were for sale at Auto Logic, 1001 West Crawford Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

The owner told police that the sheds are not locked so potential customers can look inside them at any time. One shed is 10 feet by 16 feet with a loft and is valued at $5,165, while the other is 10 feet by 12 feet and is valued at $2,662, Forrester explained.

The sheds had burn damage to the floors and human excrement and urine were found inside, rendering the sheds unsellable, he noted.

Unknown persons render sheds unsellable

Over the past few weeks, my colleagues at Kansas Farm Bureau have seen more of my basement than either I or they ever envisioned they would. Their riveting view consists of two doors, one to the laundry room and one to a spare bedroom. Between the two hangs a painting from my grandmother.

It's a fall scene of a barn with hay bales stacked next to it. The sky is blue with fluffy, white clouds. Autumn has turned the grass reddish brown and yellowed the leaves on the oak trees. It's a scene taken from countless farms across the country. It's also one of several family heirlooms surrounding me in my new workspace.

Most of my work is done at a desk that once belonged to my great-grandfather. According to family lore, it resided in the office of the movie theatre he owned and operated through the Great Depression until he died in the early '70s. My father used it in his office at my childhood home until I took possession of it.

The desk has been in my basement for just shy of a decade now, mostly accumulating the junk flat surfaces tend to attract. Built of solid red oak, it's still plenty capable of serving its intended function, even though a laptop has replaced the inkwell and typewriter.

I've also rediscovered an open-faced Waltham pocket watch. I've kept it nearby, winding it periodically to hear the rhythmic ticking. It’s older than the desk, dating to at least my great-great-grandfather, Artemas L. Barton. There's an outside chance the watch originally belonged to his father who had the same initials.

The case is made of brass and is engraved with ALB in the center of the back cover, which is dented in a couple of spots. A semi-circle of polished metal is evidence it slid in and out of its owner's pocket. It's missing the second hand and the face is a little faded, but it still keeps time.

All of these are amusing distractions that allow my mind to wander.

I ponder if my great-grandfather leaned back in his chair and propped his feet up on the same corner I do. I wonder if Artemas checked the watch before an important meeting. And I ask myself what item of mine might one day spark such questions from my descendants.

My grandmother probably didn't set out to create an heirloom when she crafted her painting. My great-grand-father would have never envisioned his office desk from a cinema holding a computer capable of streaming endless movies and TV shows. I doubt my great-great-grandfather imagined his everyday watch becoming an inheritance spanning generations.

These items are connections to just a fraction of my ancestors. Others include a Lutheran minister in Germany at the beginning of the European Reformation and an accused witch in Salem, Mass. She eventually fled to Framingham, which is just west of Boston. Between the two is Waltham, birthplace of the pocket watch now ticking away on my desk.

Everyone comes from somewhere, and that's why I find these items fascinating. I think about what small items of mine might find their way to my descendants long after I’m gone.

It's also a reminder that life will continue without you. And the most inconsequential decisions — creating a painting, choosing a desk, buying a pocket watch — become the little legacies we leave.

Insight: Little legacies

Thanks to a donation from Conklin Cars, students in the Automotive Technology program at Salina Tech now have a hybrid vehicle to work and learn on.

Monday afternoon, the dealership donated a 2010 Toyota Prius to the college, the first hybrid in the college’s stable of vehicles students learn from.

Auto Tech instructor Russ Wasson said the program has included classes on hybrid vehicles for several years, but finding some for students to get hands-on experience with has meant asking around and borrowing them as needed.

“Now, I won’t have to spend time trying to find one when we need it,” Wasson said.&nbsp;

Presenting the vehicle to Salina Tech were Javier Lopez, Conklin’s Used Sales Manager, and Justin Malbrough, Master Toyota Technician.

“We knew about the need for a while, and when this came in as a trade-in, we wanted to donate it,” Lopez said.&nbsp;

“This is a great example of the way Salina Tech’s programs and faculty work with our industry partners to benefit the students who will eventually become their employees,” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols.

Conklin Cars donates Prius to Salina Tech

OLATHE – In normal times, it benefits consumers and the environment to not waste food.

But Londa Nwadike knows it’s even more important now, when the COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions in the food supply chain.

“In 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service estimated that 30% to 40% of edible food in the United States went to waste,” said Nwadike, a food safety specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “And, at the household level, the average U.S. family of four loses an estimated $1,500 per year on wasted food.”

Nwadike, who is located in Olathe, and has a joint appointment with the University of Missouri, has worked with staff at both universities to publish a fact sheet to help consumers cut the waste and save money at home.

Nwadike said the publication outlines a few strategies for reducing waste, including things consumers can do at home; donating to food banks; and building a compost pile.

She said consumers should try to reduce the volume of surplus food they have in the home to start. Some of the strategies for doing that include:

Shop your refrigerator first.&nbsp;Before buying more food, eat perishable food in the refrigerator, or incorporate it into meal planning.

Strategic grocery shopping.&nbsp;Once you plan meals, make a shopping list – and stick to it. Avoid impulse buying.

Store food properly.&nbsp;Maintain your refrigerator at 40 degrees F or less, and freezer at 0 degrees. Store food in packaging that is designed for storage in the freezer, refrigerator or possibly at room temperature.

Extend the life of food.&nbsp;Frozen food can be safe for extended periods of time;&nbsp;follow recommended storage times.&nbsp; Canning&nbsp;properly is another way to extend food life.

Understand and check food product dates.&nbsp;A “Sell by” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale. “Best by” or “use by” dates are the food manufacturer’s recommendation for best flavor and quality.

 </figure>OLATHE – In normal times, it benefits consumers and the environment to not waste food.But Londa Nwadike knows it’s even more important now, when the COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions in the food supply chain.“In 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service estimated that 30% to 40% of edible food in the United States went to waste,” said Nwadike, a food safety specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “And, at the household level, the average U.S. family of four loses an estimated $1,500 per year on wasted food.”Nwadike, who is located in Olathe, and has a joint appointment with the University of Missouri, has worked with staff at both universities to publish a fact sheet to help consumers cut the waste and save money at home.<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3482.pdf" target="_blank">Working Together to Reduce Food Waste</a>&nbsp;is available for free from the&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">K-State Research and Extension bookstore</a>.Nwadike said the publication outlines a few strategies for reducing waste, including things consumers can do at home; donating to food banks; and building a compost pile.She said consumers should try to reduce the volume of surplus food they have in the home to start. Some of the strategies for doing that include:Shop your refrigerator first.&nbsp;Before buying more food, eat perishable food in the refrigerator, or incorporate it into meal planning.Strategic grocery shopping.&nbsp;Once you plan meals, make a shopping list – and stick to it. Avoid impulse buying.Store food properly.&nbsp;Maintain your refrigerator at 40 degrees F or less, and freezer at 0 degrees. Today in History -- May 13

Saline County commissioners took care of a variety of business during Tuesday's regular meeting. 

During the meeting, the commissioners heard from County Health Officer Jason Tiller that the COVID-19 testing rate in Saline County is 13.15 people per 1,000. Additionally, Tiller told commissioners that 98 people were tested for COVID-19 at the recent mobile testing lab conducted in the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Center parking lot. Tiller said that all 98 tests had a negative outcome, according to meeting information from Saline County.

Other commission business conducted Tuesday includes the following, according to the county meeting information.

Commissioners approved to accept a $58,008 grant for Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding for the sheriff’s office. This money will be used to purchase medical supplies and protective equipment for staff and inmates.

•Commissioners approved the purchase of a 2020 transport van that will be equipped with a wheelchair lift from Kansas Truck Equipment Company for a total of $63,131. This new van will replace a 2014 Dodge Caravan. It will be able to seat six inmates and one inmate who may be in a wheelchair. It is estimated that it will take 180 days to have this vehicle delivered.

•Commissioners also approved the purchase of a new 2020 SUV to be used for civil process. This will replace a Ford Crown Victoria. The cost of this vehicle is $51,939. Both the purchase of the van for corrections and the SUV for civil process were already planned purchases through the county’s Equipment Improvement Program.

•Commissioners approved the health department to participate in a mosquito surveillance pilot project. By participating, the health department will receive $1,000 from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to assist with covering the time and mileage that will be associated with collecting the mosquito specimens and sending them to KDHE. This pilot project will run from May 31 to Sept. 19. 

•Kathy Mosher with Central Kansas Mental Health provided a presentation on the organization's 2021 budget request. Mosher presented a great deal of information about the services the organization provides. Central Kansas Mental Health is requesting $301,177 from Saline County in the 2021 budget year.

Commissioner will continue to hear funding requests from the other allocation agencies for the next two Tuesdays before they make decisions on how much to allocate to the different agencies for 2021.

He told commissioners that more unencumbered cash was moved into 2020 than was expected. This still leaves the county’s financial situation in good shape, he noted. Smith-Hanes also reported that the legislature will be back in session starting on May 21. Additionally, Smith-Hanes mentioned that the 2019 financial audit is complete and if commissioners wish, the auditor can provide a presentation.•Commissioners had a good discussion regarding the potential movement into Phase 2 of Governor Laura Kelly’s reopening plan, which is expected to occur next week. It was the general consensus that the commissioners do not intend to impose any further restrictions on what has already been set forth and to engage in conversation with the health officer if for some reason that changes.•Commissioners also conducted two executive sessions. One was for attorney/client privilege regarding the expo center lease and the second was for employer/employee negotiations.
