Police are investigating damage done to a pickup late last week in central Salina.

Someone used an item, possibly a key, to scratch all the way down the driver's side of a 1998 GMC pickup in the 800 block of South Ohio, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Additionally, it appeared that the word "ugly" was scratched into the paint on the tailgate, he said. The incident is belived to have occurred sometime between 11 p.m. on Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday, Forrester said.

Two vehicle burglaries in southeast Salina resulted in the loss of approximately $1,700 worth of items over the weekend.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a Chevrolet Camaro and a Lincoln MKC belonging to Aaron Blenderman, 48, and Stacey Blenderman, 46, both of Salina, were burglarized while they were parked at a residence on Wildcat Circle sometime between 10 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Both vehicles were left unlocked, he said.

Items missing include the following, Forrester said.

An Ogio laptop bag with "1 Vision Aviation" on it

Total loss was estimated at approximately $1,700, he said.

The owner, Saline County resident Michael Stinchcomb, told the sheriff's office that the boat, a 12-foot aluminum Meyers semi-V boat with 9.9 hp Evinrude outboard motor, was tied up on the Solomon River near the 5300 block of North Jasper Road at 8 a.m. Saturday, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. When Stinchcomb returned shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, the boat was gone, Melander said.

PRATT – Though Kansas coyote hunters can already hunt at night year-round without the aid of lights, a new proposal will be discussed at the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) Commission’s June 25 virtual meeting that would allow the use of lights, night vision, and thermal imaging to hunt coyotes.

“Most other Midwest states allow this activity in some form with apparently no more legal or safety issues than other types of hunting,” said KDWPT furbearer biologist Matt Peek, ”And pressure from hunters, and in some cases livestock producers, for us to allow this has really grown in recent years.”&nbsp;

In response to requests from the public, Commissioners asked the department to develop recommendations for future consideration. KDWPT’s proposal – which will likely be voted on at the Commission’s August meeting – includes the following options:&nbsp;&nbsp;

•Allowing the use of artificial lights, night vision and thermal imaging equipment for hunting coyotes only, not furbearers like bobcats and fox.

•Season dates for use of this equipment would be Jan. 1 – March 31.

•Use of this equipment would not be allowed from a vehicle.

•Use of this equipment would be prohibited on department lands and waters, including Walk-In Hunting Area (WIHA) properties.

•And, a $2.50 permit would be required initially so that the department may learn more about demand and frequency of use.

KDWPT considers allowing lights, night optics for hunting coyotes

Bad doctors? Bad teachers? Bad Police?

It is unfortunate that from time to time, some medical doctors have their license to practice pulled for malpractice. We know that there are some bad teachers in the classroom. And we also should know by now that there are some officers who do not belong in a police force.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

These professions have a system for training future professionals. They also should have provisions for eliminating individuals who do not have the ability to perform professionally or effectively.

As a long time teacher-trainer, I am proud of those who successfully completed their training and are good teachers in their schools today. But there were students who aspired to be teachers who never made it through the program—and that was also good.

At a university, we have an advantage of having nearly four years to evaluate a teaching candidate. I got to meet with my teaching candidates from their freshman year onward. One new student was so very excited about biology, from their experiences on the farm. Such a background can make for a very enthusiastic teacher in the classroom. But this student was also about the most shy person I had ever met. And shyness is a personality trait that is nearly impossible to change. I made early extra assignments for the student to observe high school classes. We then had discussions about whether this student could handle the occasional paper wads thrown when your back is turned, etc. This candidate realized that they would be “eaten alive” the first day in the classroom. An in-charge personality and a “teacher’s voice” were not in their skill set. The student switched to another field of biology and completed a degree.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Other cases were not voluntary. Faculty colleagues kept an eye out for whether they would want their own child in a class taught by the teacher candidates in their classes. They would occasionally alert me to serious concerns: honesty, work ethic, sexual harassment, lack of enthusiasm for biology, etc.

This is where I would have serious discussions with the student. If they could not change and problems did not get addressed, the department could and would reject their application for student teaching. In a few cases, especially when a student transferred to us in their last year and we had no substantial information, I would place them with a student teaching supervisor who had high standards and was willing to fail a student teacher if they were not professional.&nbsp; —Not showing up on time. —Failing to grade and return papers in a timely manner, etc. —Dishonesty. —Working the system. One perpetrator of sexual harassment was immediately dis-enrolled.

Due process must always be available.

Nearly all bad doctors and bad teachers could be culled in the multi-year face-to-face preparation of those professionals. But it relies on extensive personal contact with the candidates. It will not work with “virtual” online programs where faculty have no direct interpersonal contact. Professionals should never be trained online. Police academy is shorter. Therefore, ongoing high standards of practice within all professions must be maintained in the field as well. In many states, a teacher’s license or certificate is only pulled when triggered by a criminal offense. We must do better.

Unfortunately, accrediting agencies such as CAEP (formerly NCATE) long disregarded any need for gatekeeping; they only wanted reports on successful candidates. If they heard of students who did not complete the program, they would question a department for “why didn’t these students succeed?” as if every person can be a good teacher. &nbsp;

When a teacher is fired, there is usually a long history of bad teaching that came before. When a doctor’s license is pulled for malpractice, there are usually plenty of prior cases that were ignored. And when a bad cop is caught on video, there were usually a long list of prior bad acts. In nearly none of these cases will “re-education” solve their problem.

Simple measurements are no substitute. The best of teachers could have low-scoring students in an impoverished neighborhood. The best surgeon may have the lowest patient survival rate because they only take the most desperate cases.

To maintain respect for the profession, professions have a responsibility for “gatekeeping.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Parts of our area will be under grassland fire danger on Monday.

The combination of gusty winds and dry conditions will result in very high grassland fire danger across parts of mainly central Kansas on Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. 

The greatest threat is roughly along and west of a line from Lincoln to Hutchinson.

The greatest threat is roughly along and west of a line from Lincoln to Hutchinson.

UPDATE: The City of Salina sent out a notification early this afternoon that the agenda for today's Salina City Commission meeting has been updated.

Now included on the agenda is a request for the commission to proclaim June 19, 2020, as a  day  to  celebrate  Juneteenth  in  Salina.  Tiana  Marion, Salina South debate team member is scheduled to read the proclamation.

Additionally, we have added the bid information for the agricultural land at the Salina landfill. It is within the story below.

Consideration of an agriculture lease and an executive session are on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

According to the city commission agenda, the room will be arranged to accommodate 50 people, with overflow seating and a video monitor available in room 107B.

Commissioners are scheduled to consider a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute a four and one-half (4.5) year agricultural lease agreement with Lance Nelson for the agricultural portion of the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill property southwest of Salina.

According to background information in the commission meeting packet, the city has leased the cultivated and pasture portions of the property not used for landfill purposes. The current lease agreement, with Dennis and Galen Swenson, is set to expire once wheat and other crops are harvested this summer, according to the meeting packet information. 

Bids for the lease agreement to be considered at Monday's meeting were opened on June 4 and are as follows.

City staff is recommending that the commissioners enter into an agricultural lease agreement with Nelson.

Commissioners also are scheduled to meet in executive session to discuss the subject of the city’s claim arising from the detection, isolation, and cleanup of asbestos materials in the basement and basement stairwell of Fire Station No. 2 with special legal counsel, Ilene Munk, via telephone, and the city’s legal counsel," according to the commission meeting packet.

NWS: Hot and dry weather to continue

On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14. Many Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the Red, White and Blue in front of homes and businesses. The day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

Do you know the flag's history? According to American legend, in June 1776, George Washington commissioned Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, to create a flag for the new nation in anticipation of a declaration of its independence.

On June 14, 1777, John Adams spoke about the flag at a meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. 

He said, "Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation." 

There have been twenty-seven official versions of the flag so far; stars have been added to it as states have entered the Union. The current version dates to July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state.

Celebrating Flag Day

The Los Angeles Rams are unveiling their new uniforms, as designed and produced by Nike, Inc. There is lots of excitement about seeing the new uniforms. This unveiling is an especially exciting moment for Nike’s lead project designer, who happens to come from rural Kansas.

Jason Wright is a lead product designer with Nike, Inc., in Oregon. That’s halfway across the continent from where Jason grew up near Garnett in Anderson County, Kansas.

“My dad was an engineer at Wolf Creek, but he also had a metal and wood shop at home,” Jason said. “Dad (also) restored an old ’72 Chevy pickup.

“I grew up with the expectation that, if you’re not doing something else, you’re out there doing something creative,” Jason said. “I owe a big debt to my dad.”

Jason helped his dad in the shop and worked on designing things of his own. He found he especially enjoyed drawing. “I loved basketball, and Kobe Bryant was my guy,” Jason said. Kobe was the most famous player in the NBA, and kids around the world were admiring Kobe Bryant’s shoes as made by Nike. “I tried drawing what my own ‘Kobes’ would look like,” Jason said. He drew sketches of logos and wheels and shoes.

He even entered some of his drawings in an online competition for amateur shoe designers. By his sophomore year in high school at Garnett, he won that competition. That caused him to receive an email from a designer at one of the Nike companies, encouraging him to pursue his talent.

Jason went on to K-State and earned a degree in graphic design. After graduation, he married a young woman from Topeka and went to work for a firm in Kansas City.

One day out of the blue, he got a call from a Nike staffer who had seen Jason’s work on a website and was interested in recruiting him to work for Nike. “We loved Kansas City, but we couldn’t turn down this opportunity,” Jason said. He estimated that Nike gets thousands of designer applications each month.

Jason went to Oregon for the interview and ultimately accepted a position with Nike in 2015. “I think my appreciation of graphics for sports fans gave me an edge,” Jason said.

Today, he is a senior designer with Nike, with responsibility for collegiate and professional sports products. His work has taken him to stadiums, arenas and cities all over the world, including the most recent Super Bowl game, for example. “I’ve traveled to so many college towns,” Jason said. He still believes Manhattan is a special place.

“We’ve been involved with designing uniforms for all the Division I Nike schools,” Jason said. Imagine designing uniforms for schools such as Ohio State and LSU, and seeing those uniforms being worn on to the field in those classic stadiums.&nbsp;Jason especially appreciated the opportunity to design the throwback basketball uniforms for his alma mater, Kansas State University. “My goal is to design uniforms that make players feel really good and help them perform at a high level,” Jason said.

The Los Angeles Rams of the NFL are preparing to move into their new stadium in L.A., complete with a new logo and new uniforms. Jason worked on the new logo and uniforms for Nike. “That’s probably the most high-profile project I’ve been responsible for,” Jason said.

His work has taken him around the globe. “I’ve been to factories all over the world,” Jason said. “It’s been a cool opportunity for a small-town kid from Kansas.” After all, Jason grew up in a rural area between Garnett, population 3,415, and Westphalia, population 163 people. Now, that’s rural.

“I appreciate the environment I grew up in,” Jason said.

It’s time to say goodbye to Los Angeles, where a new logo and uniforms were unveiled as designed by a designer who is originally from rural Kansas. We commend Jason Wright for making a difference by putting his creativity into action. From small town Kansas to an NFL franchise, it’s a type of dream career – just the way I would design it.

Kansas Profile – Now That’s Rural: Jason Wright, Nike designer

MANHATTAN – In what can sometimes feels like a sea of adversity, there are reasons for optimism in the food industry during the global pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.

“With COVID-19, there are so many unfortunate things that have happened, but one bright spot is that there is really an awareness now of the importance of not wasting food, and a new understanding of the complexity of the food chain,” said Jeanette Thurston, director of the Kansas State University Food Science Institute.

Thurston was one of two guests on a recent episode of the Beef Cattle Institute’s weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2020/06/05/meet-jeanette-thurston-dustin-questions-new-consumer-behaviors-top-post-pandemic-consumer-behaviors-food-security/" target="_blank">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast talking about the changing habits of consumers. Also joining the podcast was Patti Dollarhide, BCI’s value chain alliance director as well as agricultural economist Dustin Pendell, beef extension specialist Bob Weaber, and veterinarians Bob Larson and Brad White.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Right now, I shop at the grocery store once every two weeks, so the shelf-life of the food products is important to me,” Thurston said, adding she appreciates the extra time that shopping for food online provides her and it is something she expects to continue after the pandemic is over.

To extend shelf-life, Thurston encouraged consumers to incorporate more frozen and pre-packaged items in their meal plans.

Dollarhide said consumers are adopting many habits that dieticians have suggested for years.

“Taking a shopping list to the store with you and paying attention to the food’s nutritional benefits are some ways to avoid impulse buys and eat healthier,” she said.

Several of those on the podcast said they are experimenting with different cuts of meat on the grill and in their kitchens. “This is a time when people are trying to prepare less expensive cuts of meat,” Pendell said.

Weaber added: “This is an opportunity for people to get more creative and thoughtful about their meal plan.”

And Dollarhide said beef is an easy product to repurpose for another meal. “Beef doesn’t have to always be center of the plate; consumers can have (planned leftovers) that let them incorporate beef into another meal,” she said.

As strains on the supply chain have been exposed due to COVID-19 related sickness, Dollarhide said an increasing number of consumers want to make food purchases straight from the farm.

“<a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/shopkansasfarms/learning_content" target="_blank">Shop Kansas Farms</a>&nbsp;is an example of how producers are connecting directly with consumers and there is a chance to give them insight into the food supply chain,” she said. Shop Kansas Farms is a Facebook group that connects farmers with buyers from across the state.

“This really is giving those involved in agriculture a great opportunity to connect with consumers.”

As drivers return to the roads, new AAA research shows why safety may not be top of mind

WICHITA&nbsp; – After three months of staying at home, AAA warns motorists against falling back into dangerous driving habits. As economies reopen and more drivers get back on the road, new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows why motorists may not be as focused on good driving behavior when they get behind the wheel.

The latest AAA Traffic Safety Culture Index finds drivers who have been in at least one crash in the past two years are significantly more likely to engage in risky behaviors like speeding or texting, even when they think the police may catch them.

“The frequency of drivers in the United States engaging in improper behavior is too high. While drivers acknowledge that certain activities behind the wheel, like texting, are dangerous, some do them anyway,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “We need to be aware of the serious consequences of engaging in these types of dangerous driving behaviors and change course.”

The Foundation’s annual Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI, which highlights the gap between drivers’ attitudes and their reported behaviors, found&nbsp;that drivers perceive distracted, aggressive and impaired driving as dangerous. Yet many of them admit to engaging in at least one of these exact behaviors in the 30 days before the survey. The numbers were even higher for those involved in a recent crash:&nbsp;&nbsp;

•50% of those involved in a recent crash admit to&nbsp;talking on a hand-held device while driving&nbsp;in the past month vs. 42% not involved in a crash. 

•43% of those involved in a recent crash admit to&nbsp;texting while driving&nbsp;in the past month vs. 27% not involved in a crash. 

•39% of those involved in a recent crash admit to&nbsp;running a red light&nbsp;in the past month vs. 30% not involved in a crash

This data shows that people are not altering their behavior even when it has resulted in a crash.

Of all dangerous driving tasks, drivers dubbed these two&nbsp;extremely or very dangerous:

•Driving when so tired, it was hard to keep your eyes open (96%). 

•Driving while typing or sending a text message or an email (96%)

Yet these same drivers text when behind the wheel, even believing there is a risk of getting caught by police for reading (43.7%) or typing (42.7%) a text message.&nbsp;

Drivers engage in some dangerous behaviors less often It’s not all bad news. Compared with 2018 findings, drivers reported they are engaging in some dangerous behaviors&nbsp;less frequently. Drivers who reported talking on a hand-held cell phone saw the most significant decrease, down from 52.1% to 43.2%, while drowsy driving and texting both fell by 3 percentage points.

“If you point to the dangerous driving behaviors of others that you sometimes do yourself, then you are the problem,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy and research. “I’m encouraged to see a slight shift toward safer driving behaviors, but we have more work to do. Stay focused on driving. This is a must.”

In 2019, AAA launched a new, multi-year initiative “Don’t Drive Intoxicated, Don’t Drive Intexticated”, aimed at making texting and driving as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving. The public is invited to take the Don’t Drive Intexticated pledge. You’d have to travel 100 miles to save roughly 5 minutes, moving at 75 mph instead of 70 mph. Speed kills and isn’t worth the cost.Stay alert. Stop driving if you become sleepy because you could fall asleep at any time. Fatigue impacts reaction time, judgment, and vision, causing people who are very tired to behave in similar ways to those who are drunk.Only drive sober.&nbsp; If you consume marijuana, alcohol, or use potentially impairing prescription medications, then don’t drive.&nbsp; And if you’re going to drive, then don’t consume these substances. If you are taking prescription medications, visit&nbsp;Roadwise Rx&nbsp;to learn if they can impair driving. Always wear your seat belt.The annual TSCI identifies attitudes and behaviors related to traffic safety.
