Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the following activities have been postponed at Rolling Hills Zoo until further notice:

• All Zoo Teen activities, including sno cone and cotton candy sales • Animal Meet and Greets • And the cancellation of Toddler Tuesday for July 14th and 21st.

At this time our top priority is the safety of our guests, staff and animals, while creating a wonderful experience during your visit to Rolling Hills Zoo.

Please remember: Pursuant to County Resolution 20-2297, face masks are to be worn in all areas of the Zoo where 6’ social distancing cannot be maintained. Children 5 and younger are exempt.

Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

This cycle, $89,000 is available for charitable projects in Saline County that meet one or more of the following criteria:

•Projects that improve the quality of life for Saline County residents.

•Projects or programs that support and encourage healthy living across Saline County.

•Projects that improve quality of life for citizens of Assaria, Kansas.

•Organizations or programs in Saline or Ottawa Counties whose work furthers the care, education, development, health, safety and human service needs of children ages 0-6 to better prepare them for kindergarten.

•Projects that promote hands-on learning opportunities for school-age youth in the areas of arts, humanities, science, technology and invention.

Funding for the August community grant cycle is provided by the Assaria Community Fund, the Fund for Early Childhood Care, Education and Development, the Kansas Health Foundation Fund for GSCF, the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund and the Fund for Greater Salina.

Grants are limited to communities in Saline County and will be awarded through a competitive application process. Requests for funding up to $5,000 will be considered. Nonprofit organizations, government and public entities, educational institutions and churches are encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on August 15. Feeling the heat: AAA reminds drivers of heat-related dangers

Beginning Monday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin replacing sections of guardrail on Interstate 135 in McPherson County. 

The guardrail is located between the Kansas Highway 61/U.S. Highway 81 junction and Wells Fargo Road bridge, mile post 58 to mile post 75.

Traffic flow through the work zone will not be restricted during the project.

Fulsom Brothers Inc. of Cedar Vale is the primary contractor for this $163,514 project. The contractor has scheduled work to be completed by August, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a work zone.&nbsp;Check <a href="http://kandrive.org">kandrive.org</a> for updates and more information.

Guardrail replacement on Interstate 135 to begin Monday

A man whose artwork examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them is scheduled to be the next artist in residence in the Salina Art Center Warehouse.

The Salina Art Center welcomes Fidencio Fifield-Perez to a month-long artist residency, July 1-29, 2020, to create new work at the center’s warehouse, followed by an exhibition,&nbsp;Birdwatchers, July 29-Oct. 4 in the Art Center galleries.

The galleries will open to the public on July 22 and follow current COVID-19 city and state guidelines requiring masks and social distancing.

Fifield-Perez, assistant professor at the University of Missouri School of Visual Studies, Columbia, Mo., was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, but raised in the U.S. after his family migrated when he was six years old.&nbsp; The artist’s current work examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them.&nbsp; Fifield-Perez manipulates paper surfaces and maps to refer to the crafts and customs used to celebrate festivals and mourn the dead, which he learned as a child in Oaxaca.&nbsp; He uses these techniques to reconnect with a time and place no longer present.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Wednesday at noon, the Art Center will host a Lunch and Learn discussion with the artist on FACEBOOK Live&nbsp;to explore contemporary issues and society through his lens as an artist.

In addition to new works, the exhibition will include the&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation, which reflects how the artist’s current DACA status “forces me to be a hoarder” due to the constant need to provide paperwork and documentation of work and education status. Fifield-Perez uses the envelopes sent to him with DACA paperwork to create a collection of plants as portraits of friends and loved ones (who gifted him many of the plants), and symbols of hope for a permanent home here. The house plants have no permanent home, but are moveable, representing the precarious position and constant anxiety of DACA recipients. The&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation will serve as inspiration for a&nbsp;Plant Propagation Workshop, July 18, 2-4 pm.&nbsp; Reservations are required for the free workshop.&nbsp;Anyone is welcome to participate and reservations can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinaartcenter.org/" target="_blank">www.salinaartcenter.org</a>.&nbsp;

Another large piece of cut-paperwork titled&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;will be installed over the course of four days,&nbsp;July 22-24. From noon-5 p.m. these days the public is invited to interact with the artist and observe the installation but must reserve a time&nbsp;by calling the Art Center or making a reservation online. The physical act of installing&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;is laborious and tedious, requiring the artist to use hundreds of small red push pins like those used by border patrol agents to mark on their maps where bodies have been found at border crossings. The artist's labor is also representative of the physical body within the work.&nbsp;

The Salina Art Center plans a&nbsp;Virtual Opening Reception for Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Details will be announced in the future. Other related public programs include:

 </figure>A man whose artwork examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them is scheduled to be the next artist in residence in the Salina Art Center Warehouse.The Salina Art Center welcomes Fidencio Fifield-Perez to a month-long artist residency, July 1-29, 2020, to create new work at the center’s warehouse, followed by an exhibition,&nbsp;Birdwatchers, July 29-Oct. 4 in the Art Center galleries. The galleries will open to the public on July 22 and follow current COVID-19 city and state guidelines requiring masks and social distancing.Fifield-Perez, assistant professor at the University of Missouri School of Visual Studies, Columbia, Mo., was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, but raised in the U.S. after his family migrated when he was six years old.&nbsp; The artist’s current work examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them.&nbsp; Fifield-Perez manipulates paper surfaces and maps to refer to the crafts and customs used to celebrate festivals and mourn the dead, which he learned as a child in Oaxaca.&nbsp; He uses these techniques to reconnect with a time and place no longer present.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Wednesday at noon, the Art Center will host a Lunch and Learn discussion with the artist on FACEBOOK Live&nbsp;to explore contemporary issues and society through his lens as an artist.<figure>

 </figure>In addition to new works, the exhibition will include the&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation, which reflects how the artist’s current DACA status “forces me to be a hoarder” due to the constant need to provide paperwork and documentation of work and education status. Fifield-Perez uses the envelopes sent to him with DACA paperwork to create a collection of plants as portraits of friends and loved ones (who gifted him many of the plants), and symbols of hope for a permanent home here. The house plants have no permanent home, but are moveable, representing the precarious position and constant anxiety of DACA recipients. The&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation will serve as inspiration for a&nbsp;Plant Propagation Workshop, July 18, 2-4 pm.&nbsp; Reservations are required for the free workshop.&nbsp;Anyone is welcome to participate and reservations can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinaartcenter.org/" target="_blank">www.salinaartcenter.org</a>.&nbsp;Another large piece of cut-paperwork titled&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;will be installed over the course of four days,&nbsp;July 22-24. From noon-5 p.m. these days the public is invited to interact with the artist and observe the installation but must reserve a time&nbsp;by calling the Art Center or making a reservation online. The physical act of installing&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;is laborious and tedious, requiring the artist to use hundreds of small red push pins like those used by border patrol agents to mark on their maps where bodies have been found at border crossings. The artist's labor is also representative of the physical body within the work.&nbsp;The Salina Art Center plans a&nbsp;Virtual Opening Reception for Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Details will be announced in the future. SAC residency explores borders, people who traverse edges of society

Today is Saturday, July 11, the 193rd day of 2020. There are 173 days left in the year.

There is a risk for severe storms this afternoon and early evening, mainly across south-central, east-central and southeast Kansas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. 

The main threats will be large hail up to golf ball size and damaging winds to 70 mph, NWS reported. Locally heavy rainfall and minor lowland flooding is also possible, NWS added.

LINCOLN -- The Lincoln County Health Department today reported the county's second case of COVID-19. 

The county was one of the few in the state that had no confirmed cases of COVID-19 for much of the pandemic, reporting its first confirmed case on Wednesday.

In late June, the health department reported a confirmed case, however the person in question was temporarily living outside Kansas, had no Kansas contacts, and no exposure in Kansas. By July 1, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had removed the person from Lincoln County's official COVID-19 count.

The second confirmed Lincoln County case is in isolation at home and the health department is calling the person's identified contacts, according to a news release from the health department.

"Our goal continues to be preventing and limiting exposure to our population. Per Dr. Lee Norman, KDHE Secretary of Health and Environment, 'Kansas should remain vigilant. It's important to live your lives, but it's also important to take basic precautions, like exercising good hygiene practices. It is up to each of us to do our part,'" the health department noted in the news release.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported three additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 92.

Following is the information about the three newly reported cases as provided by the health department.

Positive case No. 90 is a symptomatic male in his 60s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 91 is a symptomatic male in his 30s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 92 is a symptomatic female in her teens with known exposure and is recovering at home

McPherson County reports 3 new cases of COVID-19, other info

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update with an added bonus of voter registration information.

Saline County continues to have a tremendous uptake in COVID-19 cases. An alarming amount of cases are having mild symptoms. Those with mild illness have continued to work or attend events then eventually get tested and are not staying at home and awaiting their results after testing. A portion of these positive cases report attending gatherings, parties, or traveling to sports tournaments while contagious. These events have been both inside and outside of Saline County.

If you are being tested for COVID-19, you are considered a Person Under Investigation (PUI). The PUI MUST isolate while waiting for results. The PUI should isolate away from anyone in their household. If they are not able to isolate away from the household members by staying in their own room, it is highly recommended that the entire household must quarantine while awaiting results to reduce exposure and potential spread.

If you are notified by the Health Department of being a contact of someone who is positive for COVID-19, you MUST quarantine at home for 14 days. A close contact is defined as any individual who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 10 minutes starting 2 days before illness onset until the time the patient was isolated. If you are a contact and decided to be tested, and it comes back negative, you STILL have to finish your 14-day period because you may become contagious anytime during the rest of the 14 days. We do NOT recommend testing contacts unless symptoms arise or a high-risk individual is involved.

If a person in quarantine does not develop any COVID-19 symptoms, then they are released from quarantine at the end of 14 days. If symptoms do develop during those 14 days, the person is to contact their primary healthcare provider for further evaluation and/or testing. People who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 may be released from isolation at the direction of the Health Department when it has been at least 10 days since the onset of symptoms AND 72 hours since symptoms have resolved. This symptom-based method of returning people to work is preferred to a testing-based method of returning people to work because tests can still remain positive long after the virus is no longer active.

There are 25 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, July 8 report. All cases are associated with other positive cases. The total for the county is now 215, with 143 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 70 that have recovered, and 2 deaths. The other cases are isolated at home. *KDHE is reporting 192 positives for Saline County, which is incorrect. The total for Saline County is 215.

According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 18,611 cases and 284 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

Saline County’s Resolution requiring the wearing of masks or other face coverings in public spaces went into effect yesterday, July 9th. We have updated our website with Frequently Asked Questions as well as printable posters for businesses to use. •The first meeting of the Coronavirus Relief Fund Committee will take place on Monday, July 13th at 11 am. This committee will be working to provide recommendations to the County Commissioners on the Direct Aid Plan that is required to be submitted to the State of Kansas regarding the plans for expending $11,026,434 in Coronavirus Relief Funding as part of the CARES Act. These are challenging days for businesses. Much of the exposure to COVID-19 is occurring outside of the workplace. Businesses become severely affected when their employees potentially expose other employees or are unable to work. An alarming amount of cases are having mild symptoms. Those with mild illness have continued to work or attend events then eventually get tested and are not staying at home and awaiting their results after testing. A portion of these positive cases report attending gatherings, parties, or traveling to sports tournaments while contagious. These events have been both inside and outside of Saline County.If you are being tested for COVID-19, you are considered a Person Under Investigation (PUI). The PUI MUST isolate while waiting for results. The PUI should isolate away from anyone in their household. If they are not able to isolate away from the household members by staying in their own room, it is highly recommended that the entire household must quarantine while awaiting results to reduce exposure and potential spread.If you are notified by the Health Department of being a contact of someone who is positive for COVID-19, you MUST quarantine at home for 14 days. A close contact is defined as any individual who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 10 minutes starting 2 days before illness onset until the time the patient was isolated. If you are a contact and decided to be tested, and it comes back negative, you STILL have to finish your 14-day period because you may become contagious anytime during the rest of the 14 days. We do NOT recommend testing contacts unless symptoms arise or a high-risk individual is involved.<figure>

 </figure>If a person in quarantine does not develop any COVID-19 symptoms, then they are released from quarantine at the end of 14 days. If symptoms do develop during those 14 days, the person is to contact their primary healthcare provider for further evaluation and/or testing. People who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 may be released from isolation at the direction of the Health Department when it has been at least 10 days since the onset of symptoms AND 72 hours since symptoms have resolved. This symptom-based method of returning people to work is preferred to a testing-based method of returning people to work because tests can still remain positive long after the virus is no longer active.There are 25 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, July 8 report. All cases are associated with other positive cases. The total for the county is now 215, with 143 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 70 that have recovered, and 2 deaths. The other cases are isolated at home. *KDHE is reporting 192 positives for Saline County, which is incorrect. The total for Saline County is 215.According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 18,611 cases and 284 deaths statewide. Saline County reports 25 new COVID-19 cases; total now 215

In
light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Salina Symphony has announced the delay
of the coming season to 2021. 

“Many factors led to this decision, including concern
for the health and safety of musicians and patrons as well as the challenges
presented by socially distanced seating requirements,” said Adrienne Allen,
executive director. 

The current plan for the coming season is to
hold four subscription concerts in the spring/summer of 2021. A decision will be made about the Youth Education Program in the
coming weeks.

“Although we’re disappointed the season had to be delayed,
we’re doing all we
can to ensure that the symphony is equipped to
return strong,” said Allen. “Despite this temporary disruption,
our musicians and patrons have much to look forward to in the relatively near
future. Our music director search is well underway, and we will be entering an
exciting new era in the fall of 2021 when we begin to bring candidates in to
conduct.”

Until the symphony can safely
return to concerts at the Stiefel, they plan to seek out creative ways to fulfill
the mission and provide opportunities for musicians to perform. 

“I’m delighted
to announce that we will be presenting a Virtual Chamber Concert Series, titled
‘Listen Together,’ beginning in October,” Allen said. 

The monthly series will
feature a variety of ensembles composed of Salina Symphony musicians.

The health care center at Salina Presbyterian Manor had zero-deficiencies in a focused infection control survey conducted on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) this week.

The Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) conducts the surveys on behalf of CMS, the federal agency that sets licensing and quality standards for nursing facilities. CMS announced in March that priority would be given to focused infection control surveys and gave states until July 31, 2020, to complete the surveys. In order to complete infection control surveys, annual surveys are delayed in an effort to ensure nursing homes are prepared to respond to the threat of disease caused by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Zero deficiencies means Salina Presbyterian Manor met all the standards for infection control in the community’s health care center.

“Our employees go above and beyond every day to provide the best care to our residents,” said Christian Gilbert, executive director. “These survey results are tangible proof of our employees’ commitment to providing quality senior care and services based on Christian values. This is an especially significant recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Focused infection control surveys hone in on a nursing facility’s adherence to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and CMS guidance for infection control practices to prevent disease at the community. Communities are assessed on staff and resident education on hand hygiene and coughing/sneezing etiquette, cleaning, screening of employees and residents, effective transmission-based precautions, proper use/discarding of personal protective equipment and signage at entrances and resident rooms. Surveyors also examine the facility’s policies and emergency preparedness related to a pandemic or outbreak.

Senior living communities are surveyed annually by their licensing agency for compliance of regulations established by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) and CMS. These regulations are designed to ensure a standard of care is met. By meeting this standard, senior living communities are able to renew their licenses and continue to provide care.

A number of items were stolen from a vacant residence being remodeled in northern Saline County.

Sometime between 5 p.m. Monday and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, someone kicked in the backdoor of a residence in the 600 block of North Tressin Road and stole the following items, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

Burglar steals $1,500 worth of items from vacant residence

On May 17, 2020, between 7:10 and 7:55 a.m., two females were observed in Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street. 

The two female subjects obtained numerous blank gift cards and proceeded to unoccupied registers, activated the cards, and placed more than $200 credit on each card. The total value exceeded $2,000. The two females were photographed on surveillance video. Walmart reported that the same two individuals were involved in similar schemes in Great Bend, Hutchinson, and McPherson.

The females were described as heavy-set Black females, mid to late 30s, with dark hair. They were seen leaving the parking lot in a mid-sized dark four-door sedan.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about gift card theft at Walmart

A silver Ford Mustang sought in a hit-and-run accident in western Saline County Wednesday evening was found abandoned Thursday evening.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies recovered the Mustang in the 11000 block of West Stimmel Road at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The abandoned Mustang had dark blue stripes and damage that was consistent with the accident, he said.

Deputies are attempting to contact the registered owner, Soldan said. The car was registered to an address in Alden, Kan., he added. 

Kyle Johnson, 27, of Ellsworth, told deputies that he was eastbound on Kansas Highway 140 (K-140), about a mile east of the Saline-Ellsworth county line, on Wednesday evening when he thought a silver Ford Mustang with dark blue stripes and personalized tag that also was traveling eastbound was going to pass him, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. Instead, the vehicle struck the left rear part of Johnson's green 1995 Mustang, causing it to spin across the road and roll once, coming to rest on its wheels, Soldan said.

The silver Mustang also spun off the road, but soon recovered and sped off eastbound on K-140, he said.
