When a&nbsp;warning&nbsp;is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.

If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A&nbsp;watch&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

KDHE issues 4 blue-green algae warnings, numerous watches

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department late Thursday reported the county's 89th confirmed case of COVID-19.

Positive case No. 89 is a symptomatic female in her teens with unknown exposure and is recovering at home, the health department noted in a news release.

Of the 89 total confirmed cases in the county, 79 have met Kansas Department Health and Environment recovery guidelines, the health department noted. Additionally, there currently are no hospitalized COVID-19 cases and the county has yet to report a COVID-19 related death.

Kansas Wesleyan University has announced a pair of student support hires, with the goal of effectively meeting the academic and personal needs of all students, particularly those from historically underrepresented groups.

The Rev. Dr. Allen Smith becomes KWU’s first director of diversity and student support. Smith, who had previously served as a student support advisor at the school, is also the pastor of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in Salina. His leadership resume includes&nbsp;co-chairing the Governor’s Task Force on Racial Profiling in Kansas; receiving the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award for the state of Kansas; serving as the national coordinator against human trafficking for the National Baptist Convention USA; and acting as the executive director for Camp Ascension of the Missionary Baptist State Convention. At KWU, Dr. Smith will lead and support a number of initiatives intended to enhance equality, in addition to teaching and providing student support.&nbsp;

Brandon Cheeks ’05 joins KWU as a student support advisor. Cheeks has most recently served as a public school administrator in Newton, as well as leading as a youth and young adult pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Wichita. Prior to this, he taught at Lakewood Middle School in Salina, where he earned accolades for his teaching excellence. Cheeks serves on numerous boards, including that of the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

“We are thrilled to welcome these two individuals to our student support program,” said Dr. Damon Kraft, KWU Provost. “Fulfilling the academic and personal needs of students of all backgrounds, including Black students, is a critical part of the higher education experience. These two individuals are well-connected in the community and region, have varied backgrounds that encompass a wide range of diverse experiences and will help enhance the educational experience for all KWU students.”

Salina USD 305 is participating in Lunch Across Kansas Month,&nbsp;dedicated to celebrating summer meal programs and the incredible work of those serving kids across the state.

Each summer&nbsp;food service workers, volunteers, school districts, and nonprofits work tirelessly to feed Kansas kids through the Summer Food Service program.&nbsp;As COVID-19 school closures impacted families across the state, programs provided 6,435,962 meals to Kansas kids in March, April, and May alone. These programs are still working to ensure Kansas kids are happy and healthy all summer long.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Salina Area United Way is getting books to young readers as a part of its Raising Active Wild Readers (RAWR) program. 

“Going directly to the children and allowing them personally to select their books encourages learning and inspires imaginations during the summer,” said Brenda Gutierrez, Salina Area United Way program director. “Research shows children learn best when they are engaged and having fun.”&nbsp; 

Through RAWR, kids in our community now have books for their libraries at home. RAWR has distributed over 1600 books, partnering with USD 305 at four of the summer meals sites.

Meals are free for all children 18 years and younger. The drive-thru distribution of meals is offered at seven school sites, Monday-Friday, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The free meal distribution will end on July 17.

Free books are offered for kids at the summer meals site through Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. will be:

Monday – Oakdale Elementary, 811 E. Iron, north side of the building. 

Tuesday – Central High School, 650 E. Crawford, south side of the building. 

Wednesday – Schilling Elementary, 3121 Canterbury, north side of the building

USD 305 participating in Lunch Across Kansas celebration

Brandon Taylor, recently elected board president of the Central and Western Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross, is hitting the ground running with a virtual tour of the chapter’s 60-county territory.

Taylor, who will serve as board president for the coming year, is Special Programs Manager at Fort Hays State University. He has served on the board for two years. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management degree, a Master of Business Administration degree, and a leadership and grant-writing certificate from Fort Hays State University. He currently is working on his pastoral ministry degree from Newman University.

Taylor’s family was impacted by the Greensburg tornado in 2007. “I still remember the Red Cross vehicle driving the streets, handing out water and sunscreen, which was most needed while going through debris,” Taylor said. “Those individuals were the kindest people you will ever meet, and the world needs more like them.”

Taylor said he is excited to lead the board as it executes a strategic plan they have developed. He will conduct a virtual tour through each county, talking to emergency management officials, city and county officials, and other stakeholders, while reviewing Red Cross’s role in those communities. Because he firmly believes those working on the front line are at the heart of any successful operation. Taylor stated he will be calling all volunteers to listen to their experiences and feedback.

“Many people don’t realize the many services the Red Cross offers, besides blood donation and disaster services,” Taylor said. “I want to make those trainings accessible to not only individuals but also create business partnerships as well.” Another area he wants to stress is Service to the Armed Forces (SAF), which assists active duty and veterans in communities.

Knowing that the chapter could not operate without the support of donors, Taylor is working with the board to identify the greatest needs in the chapter and bolster fundraising in the chapter. “Anyone that gives wants to see how their dollar makes an impact,” he said. “Anyone can check a box for it to go to the general fund or designate it to towards a specific area, but the report back to the donor I feel is most key on where their hard-earned dollar went.”

Taylor elected president of area Red Cross chapter

LINDSBORG -- Bethany College has appointed Bill Nelson '86 as the Director of Development. Nelson most recently served as the principal at Smoky Valley High School since 2015.

"We are very pleased to have Bill Nelson joining the Advancement team of his alma mater. Bill has a great passion and love for Bethany and is the ideal person for this position with his personality, work ethic and connections with Bethany Alumni, friends and donors,” said Clair Oleen, Director of Advancement.

When asked about his return to Bethany, Nelson said, “I’m very excited to be back on campus and am looking forward to reconnecting with Bethany alumni, friends of Bethany, and meeting new people. Bethany College gave me so much more than a degree. It gave me the experience and knowledge necessary to become a successful teacher and coach. It challenged my faith to grow as a believer, and provided me with mentors who demonstrated faith in action.”

Nelson resides in Lindsborg with his wife, Kristin '85. His children are Emily, Seth '15, and Elise, who is currently a junior at Bethany College. Bill and Kristin are members of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lindsborg.

Bethany College names Nelson director of development

ABILENE -- The Dickinson County Health Department today reported the county's 19th case of COVID-19.

"The case is a 18-year-old male. The individual is currently maintaining in-home isolation and is stable. All contacts are being notified and will monitor for COVID-19 symptoms," the health department noted in a news release issued by John Hultgren, director.

Hultgren continued, "We remind everyone to wear masks while in public, maintain social distancing, and perform proper handwashing to help reduce the spread of COVID-19."

CLAY CENTER -- Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) was awarded $126,960 from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to bolster its telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

CCMC will use this funding for telemedicine carts and videoconferencing software to continue providing medical care to patients in north-central Kansas.

Austin M. Gillard, CEO of CCMC said, “During this time, patient safety and access remains a top priority at CCMC. Telehealth can bridge that gap, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions or patients at high risk for complications should they contract COVID-19. The buildout of our telehealth platform at CCMC and all associated clinics will help ensure that patients can continue to receive high-quality care, close to home.”

“Telehealth is becoming the way medicine will be moving in the future. This grant will provide CCMC the hardware needed to receive expert consultation from a specialist, while the patient is in our own hospital or associated clinic. This brings the care right to the patient, and keeps the patient in their community,” said John M. Kelley, MD, chief medical officer.

Driver hospitalized after truck overturns in Clay Co.

Rain was plentiful across the area as storms rumbled through overnight.

Ottawa County: Ringneck Farms alleged the defendants cut down a hedge row of over 100 trees without permission on Ringneck's property. Ringneck hired expert witnesses who were prepared to testify the replacement cost of the trees was over $1 million. Before the district court, the defendants argued that the only proper measure of damages was the value of the property before the trees were cut down versus after the trees were cut down. The district court agreed and barred Ringneck from presenting its expert witnesses' testimony. Subsequently, the district court granted summary judgment for the defendants because Ringneck was unable to prove damages. On appeal, Ringneck argues the district court erred when it barred the expert testimony because tree replacement cost can be a viable measure of damages in certain circumstances.

Kansas Court of Appeals to hear Ottawa County case on Monday

The City of Salina has temporarily reduced the schedule of its workforce in an effort to prepare for expected budget shortfalls due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Summer staffing for the Parks and Recreation Department was cut by 80 percent, which has resulted in noticeable changes within city parks, facilities and programs.

In an effort to assist with beautification efforts, numerous citizens have inquired about volunteer opportunities. The scope of opportunities includes picking up trash, weeding, maintaining flower beds and pots, and emptying and removing trash cans.

Additionally, mowing and trimming of parks will be considered and reviewed for volunteers who use their own equipment.

Individuals who are interested in volunteer opportunities should complete the volunteer form and waiver at <a href="http://www.salinaparks.com">www.salinaparks.com</a>. Alternatively, paper forms are available in the Salina Parks and Recreation Department office, room 100 in the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street.

Individuals who volunteer are strongly encouraged to social distance from park users and volunteers, stay home if sick, wash hands frequently, and wear a mask.

Ordinance No. 20-11034 mandates that face coverings are worn when individuals are in any public space where social distancing of six feet at all times is not possible.

City offers information for persons interested in volunteering at parks

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a hit-and-run accident involving two Ford Mustangs in the far western part of the county.

Kyle Johnson, 27, of Ellsworth, told deputies that he was eastbound on Kansas Highway 140 (K-140), about a mile east of the Saline-Ellsworth county line, when he thought a silver Ford Mustang with dark blue stripes and personalized tag that also was traveling eastbound was going to pass him, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. Instead, the vehicle struck the left rear part of Johnson's green 1995 Mustang, causing it to spin across the road and roll once, coming to rest on its wheels, Soldan said.

The silver Mustang also spun off the road, but soon recovered and sped off eastbound on K-140, he added.

Although Johnson noticed the silver Mustang had a personalized license tag, he was not able to read it, Soldan explained.

Johnson complained of minor injuries, but refused treatment, Soldan said. His car was towed, Soldan noted.

Fire destroyed a farm implement and part of a field south of Salina late Wednesday afternoon.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies and firefighters were sent to the 2800 West Salemsborg Road at 5:03 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a field on fire.

Terry Lofdahl, of rural Smolan, had been baling hay when he noticed fire coming from the baler, Soldan said. Lofdahl was able to disconnect the tractor from the baler and escape the fire, Soldan added.

The 1997 Case 8465 Round Baler, valued at $4,000, was destroyed, Soldan said.

Nominations can be made by both chamber members and the general public. Nominees will be considered on the basis of several criteria,&nbsp; which include business excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, courageous thinking and action, inspiring leadership, community impact, positive role model, enduring accomplishments and local influence. Individuals nominated in previous years will be considered again this year. Nomination forms are available at the chamber office, 120 West Ash Street, or can be downloaded by clicking on the Hall of Fame quick link on the chamber’s <a href="http://www.salinakansas.org">website</a>. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Aug. 7.

Chamber seeks nominations for the Salina Business Hall of Fame

Due to the recent spike in confirmed COVID-19 cases in Saline County and the surrounding areas, and the recent mask orders, changes have been made to the Southeast of Saline graduation and prom plans scheduled for July 17 and 18.

Graduation will move to the more restrictive Option B on the graduation contingency plan, which will limit each graduate to four tickets for invited guests. Attendance will be by ticket only with no general admission to the public, Southeast of Saline noted in a news release. 

"Furthermore, those who are in attendance will be required to wear masks. Masks will be provided for the graduates. We regret having to make this adjustment but we are focused on providing these graduates with the recognition they deserve in the safest environment we can," the release explained.

It has also been decided that the prom and after-prom that were rescheduled for July 18 will be canceled and will not be rescheduled, according to the school.
