In 1802, the United States Military Academy officially opened at West Point, New York. 

In 1817, ground was broken for the Erie Canal in Rome, New York. The middle section of the waterway took three years to complete; the entire canal was finished in 1825.

One year ago: A helicopter crash in the Bahamas claimed the lives of American coal billionaire Chris Cline, his daughter Kameron and three of her friends, along with the pilot and copilot. Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, the only Republican in Congress to call for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, said he was leaving the GOP because he had become disenchanted with partisan politics. The strongest earthquake in 20 years shook a large area of Southern California and parts of Nevada, causing injuries and damage in the town of Ridgecrest, near the epicenter. (A stronger quake would follow a day later.)

For Saline County and Salina residents there are different regulations for the discharge of fireworks in the city and county. To help clarify those regulations, Saline County is providing information concerning the sale, discharge, and regulations.

Dates of Sale – June 27 through July 5 from 8 a.m. to midnight each day

Dates of Discharge – June 27 through July 5 from 8 a.m. to midnight each day

Dates of Sale – June 27 through July 4 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day

Dates of Discharge – July 3 and 4 ONLY from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day

When using approved consumer fireworks, a person shall not ignite or discharge fireworks:

b. While on private property without the express written consent of the property owner, including the property owner’s name, address, telephone number and signature;

c. Into, under, or from a car or vehicle, whether moving or standing still, or on a public roadway or the right-of-way adjoining a public roadway;

d. Within 100 feet of any hospital, sanitarium, infirmary, nursing home, or assisted living facility;

e. Within 300 feet of any consumer fireworks facility;

f. So as to throw, cast, or propel the fireworks in the direction of or into the path of any person or group of persons, whether on foot, on a bicycle, on a motorcycle or in a vehicle;

g. So as to impact adjoining property from either direct contact from fireworks or the residue resulting from the use of fireworks.

Saline County reports 17 new COVID-19 cases; total now is 145

Salina musician Steve Hanson is known for his passion for the guitar. Not only has he taught thousands of people to play his favorite instrument, but over the past 60 years, he has played for thousands as well.

What you might not know is that Hanson also is a guitar collector.

"My dad has collected guitars for more than 40 years. His collection now includes more than a 120 instruments," Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, told Salina Post.

Many of Steve Hanson's guitars have not been seen publicly, Rick Hanson said. Thanks to the Flower Nook, however, 12 of Steve Hanson's guitars are now on display through July 30.

The Flower Nook, located at 208 East Iron Avenue, not only is a retail floral shop, but owners Wayne and Peggy DeBay also have dedicated more than 2,000 square feet to regional artisan gifts and regularly have local artists works on display. While Steve Hanson is an artist of a musical nature, his guitars are, nonetheless, works of art. 

"The display includes instruments from England, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States. The guitars are all very unique and they share in the history of modern music," Rick Hanson said.

The guitars come from the 1930s through 1970s, he added.

Earlier today, Peggy Debay gave a brief overview of the guitar display during a Facebook Live event on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheFlowerNookSalina/">The Flower Nook </a>Facebook page. That video follows.

Part of Steve Hanson's unique guitar collection on display at The Flower Nook

SOLOMON -- A trailer stolen from a location in Solomon has been recovered and a suspect in the incident has been identified.

According to a news release from the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, deputies on June 21 took a report that a trailer with a headache rack was stolen from a property in the 200 block of Pine Street in Solomon. Deputies and criminal investigators gathered evidence and released photographs of the suspect vehicle. 

"On June 26th, of 2020, criminal investigators with the help of the victim and the public, recovered the headache rack at a location in Geary County Kansas and returned the item to the victim. During the course of the investigation, information was gathered that led detectives with the criminal interdiction unit to Riley County and Pottawatomie County Kansas where a suspect(s) in this case were identified," the news release noted.

Criminal interdiction detectives located the stolen trailer in Pottawatomie County on Sunday, according to the news release. The trailer was returned to the victim.

Charges are pending in the case, the news release noted.

Trailer stolen in Solomon recovered in Pottawatomie County

Following is information about what the counties in our area are doing concerning the governor's executive order pertaining to the wearing of face masks.

The Clay County commissioners voted Wednesday to not enforce the governor's executive order, citing a lack of resources for such enforcement. They did, however, make "the recommendation that businesses and citizens comply with the request to continue to social distance and to wear masks when that distance cannot be maintained," according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Clay-County-Kansas-Emergency-Management-269636773101267/">Clay County Kansas Emergency Management</a> Facebook page.&nbsp;

In a special meeting this morning, the Cloud County Commission exempted the county from the governor's executive order and instead approved a resolution that highly recommends the use of face masks or other coverings while in public places or where persons are not able to maintain six feet of social distancing.

Dickinson County has allowed the governor's executive order to go into effect, according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Dickinson-County-Kansas-183363591711637/">county's Facebook page</a>.&nbsp;

On Thursday, the "Ellsworth County Commissioners passed a resolution that will exempt Ellsworth County from the requirement of masks in public. While masks will not be mandated for our county, please remember that private businesses/buildings do have the right to require the use of masks," according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Ellsworth-County-Health-Department-167283529974710/">Ellsworth County Health Department</a> Facebook page.&nbsp;

In a post on its Facebook page, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/jewellcountyhealthdepartment/">Jewell County Health Department </a>wrote, "After reviewing the Governor’s Executive Order, the Jewell County Health Department strongly recommends that Jewell County residents continue practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, staying home when you’re sick, and wearing a mask in public when unable to social distance, if possible."&nbsp;

According to the Lincoln County Health Department, Lincoln County will not be enforcing the governor's executive order. In a post on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Lincoln-County-Health-Department-215507435152396/">Facebook page</a>, the health department wrote, "If you have followed the commission meeting minutes you know they are very clear that no mandatory orders from the governor or requirements issued by the governor will be enforced in Lincoln County."&nbsp;

According to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Marion-County-Clerk-793249337354351/">Marion County Clerk</a> Facebook page, "The Board of County Commissioners, acting as the Board of Public Health voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that RECOMMENDS wearing face coverings in public, but does not mandate people to do so. Each business or entity within Marion County will have authority to mandate masks in their own facilities if they so choose."

On Thursday, the McPherson County Commission passed a resolution to opt out of the governor executive order according to a news release from the McPherson County Health Department. 

"McPherson County Board of Health (the commissioners) recommends the McPherson County communities still follow the recommendations from McPherson County Health Department and McPherson County Health Officer, which includes wearing face masks while in public when 6-foot of distance cannot be maintained between individuals. Mask wearing can and will significantly decrease the amount of COVID-19 spread in our communities, both from asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals," the news release noted.

According to a letter to Mitchell County residents from the Mitchell County Health Department, "the Mitchell County Board of Health (County Commissioners) are also expected to address the Executive Order next week."

The health department continued, "With that being said, businesses in our community, whether following organizational guidance or a choice made by the business owner, may require the use of masks while in their facility. The businesses in our county have put forth a tremendous effort to protect themselves and members of the community while in their facilities, and during this time it is important to continue to proceed with the same patience and understanding in the months to come."

On Thursday, the Ottawa County Commissioners voted to exempt the county from the governor's executive order.

Following is information about what the counties in our area are doing concerning the governor's executive order pertaining to the wearing of face masks.CLAY COUNTYThe Clay County commissioners voted Wednesday to not enforce the governor's executive order, citing a lack of resources for such enforcement. They did, however, make "the recommendation that businesses and citizens comply with the request to continue to social distance and to wear masks when that distance cannot be maintained," according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Clay-County-Kansas-Emergency-Management-269636773101267/">Clay County Kansas Emergency Management</a> Facebook page.&nbsp;CLOUD COUNTYIn a special meeting this morning, the Cloud County Commission exempted the county from the governor's executive order and instead approved a resolution that highly recommends the use of face masks or other coverings while in public places or where persons are not able to maintain six feet of social distancing.DICKINSON COUNTYDickinson County has allowed the governor's executive order to go into effect, according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Dickinson-County-Kansas-183363591711637/">county's Facebook page</a>.&nbsp;ELLSWORTH COUNTYOn Thursday, the "Ellsworth County Commissioners passed a resolution that will exempt Ellsworth County from the requirement of masks in public. While masks will not be mandated for our county, please remember that private businesses/buildings do have the right to require the use of masks," according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Ellsworth-County-Health-Department-167283529974710/">Ellsworth County Health Department</a> Facebook page.&nbsp;JEWELL COUNTYIn a post on its Facebook page, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/jewellcountyhealthdepartment/">Jewell County Health Department </a>wrote, "After reviewing the Governor’s Executive Order, the Jewell County Health Department strongly recommends that Jewell County residents continue practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, staying home when you’re sick, and wearing a mask in public when unable to social distance, if possible."&nbsp;LINCOLN COUNTYAccording to the Lincoln County Health Department, Lincoln County will not be enforcing the governor's executive order. In a post on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Lincoln-County-Health-Department-215507435152396/">Facebook page</a>, the health department wrote, "If you have followed the commission meeting minutes you know they are very clear that no mandatory orders from the governor or requirements issued by the governor will be enforced in Lincoln County."&nbsp;MARION COUNTYAccording to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Marion-County-Clerk-793249337354351/">Marion County Clerk</a> Facebook page, "The Board of County Commissioners, acting as the Board of Public Health voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that RECOMMENDS wearing face coverings in public, but does not mandate people to do so. Each business or entity within Marion County will have authority to mandate masks in their own facilities if they so choose."MCPHERSON COUNTYOn Thursday, the McPherson County Commission passed a resolution to opt out of the governor executive order according to a news release from the McPherson County Health Department. "McPherson County Board of Health (the commissioners) recommends the McPherson County communities still follow the recommendations from McPherson County Health Department and McPherson County Health Officer, which includes wearing face masks while in public when 6-foot of distance cannot be maintained between individuals. Mask wearing can and will significantly decrease the amount of COVID-19 spread in our communities, both from asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals," the news release noted.MITCHELL COUNTYAccording to a letter to Mitchell County residents from the Mitchell County Health Department, "the Mitchell County Board of Health (County Commissioners) are also expected to address the Executive Order next week."The health department continued, "With that being said, businesses in our community, whether following organizational guidance or a choice made by the business owner, may require the use of masks while in their facility. Many area counties choose to not enforce governor's mask order

Loud, blustery storms blew through the area late last night.

A 66 mph wind gust was recorded at the Salina Regional Airport at 11:05 p.m. Thursday, while a 41 mph gust was recorded at the Eagle Radio studios, 1825 South Ohio Street, at 11:15 p.m.

Salina Regional Airport reported 1.22 inches of rain, while in southeast Salina, near the Eagle Radio studios, 1.45 inches of rain was reported.

The census is still happening! With the many other issues in the news, the Dane G. Hansen Foundation doesn't want you to forget that Kansas needs to get a complete count for the 2020 census.

It is not too late to complete the information for your household. You can go online to <a href="http://2020census.gov">2020census.gov</a> to respond.&nbsp; If you are not comfortable responding online, you can either fill out the paper form you should have received in the mail, or call, 1-844-330-2020 (1-844-468-2020 for Spanish language).

For every Kansan that is not counted, our state, and by trickle down, our hometowns lose more than $2,000&nbsp;every year&nbsp;for 10 years. So, for each person counted, Kansas gains $20,000 in federal dollars over the coming decade. These funds are critical for schools, highways, and a host of other programs and projects that affect our daily lives. The census also is used to determine our representation in Washington.

Be sure to count every person in your household, from newborn babies born on or before April 1, to grandparents, other relatives or friends who live with you.

When a&nbsp;warning&nbsp;is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A&nbsp;watch&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions. Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.
