Pick during ‘breaker’ stage and store inside, says K-State horticulture expert&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – Kansas gardeners may need just a little more patience and ingenuity if they’re finding that their tomatoes are slow to ripen this summer.&nbsp;

Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said recent heat may have caused the plants to go into “survival mode,” a time when it instead concentrates on moving water.&nbsp;

“The hot weather we have had recently not only interferes with the pollination of flowers, but it also affects how quickly fruit matures,” Upham said. “The best temperature range for tomato’s growth and development is 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.”&nbsp;

Recently throughout the Midwest, temperatures topped 100 degrees, which causes fruit development to “slow to a crawl,” according to Upham.&nbsp;

“Tomato color can also be affected by heat,” he said. “When temperatures rise above 95 degrees, red pigments don’t form properly, though the orange and yellow pigments do. This results in orange fruit. It doesn’t affect the edibility of the tomato, but often gardeners want that deep red color back.”&nbsp;

To help tomatoes ripen to a bright red color, Upham said gardeners should pick them during the ‘breaker’ stage, or at that point when they are just starting to turn color.&nbsp;

“At this point,” he said, “the tomato has cut itself off from the vine and nothing will be gained by keeping it on the plant. If tomatoes are picked at this stage and brought into an air-conditioned house, they will ripen more quickly and develop a good, red color. A temperature of 75 to 85 degrees will work well.”&nbsp;

High heat also will cause poor fruit to set, especially on slicer tomatoes.&nbsp;

“Cherry tomatoes seem to be more heat tolerant,” Upham said. “But for slicers, high temperatures seem to interfere with pollen viability or can cause excessive style growth, leading to a lack of pollination. Tomatoes that have already formed (before excessive heat) are not affected.”&nbsp;

Upham said it takes about three weeks for tomato flowers to develop into fruit that is about the size of a golf ball. After that, growth is usually more rapid over the following three to six weeks, and then just a few more days to change color.&nbsp;

“Though there are ‘heat-set’ slicing tomato varieties that will set fruit at higher temperatures, that difference is normally only two to three degrees,” Upham said. “Once cooler temperatures arrive, tomato flowers will resume setting fruit.”&nbsp;

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining gardens and home landscapes. Kansas heat may be slowing tomatoes from ripening  

Today is Saturday, July 25, the 207th day of 2020. There are 159 days left in the year.

A stray shower or storm cannot be ruled out Saturday afternoon, but the better chance of thunderstorms comes late Sunday into Monday. The main threat with those thunderstorms looks to be very heavy rainfall, with some potential for flash flooding.

NWS: Hot and humid weekend; storms with heavy rain

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update from Saline County.

There are 6 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, July 22 report. The total for the county is now 318, with 120 cases that are actively being monitored by the

Health Department, 195 that have recovered, and 3 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reports that they have a total of 5 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital, the COVID-19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized.

According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 25,109 cases and 326 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

•The Saline County Coronavirus Relief Fund Advisory Committee issued a press release regarding funds that are available for local businesses and non-profits to apply for reimbursements or future COVID-19 related expenses. Applications for requested funding are due by July 31st at 5 pm.

The record had been set just six days earlier on July 18. Salina's all-time record high is 118 degrees set on Aug. 13, 1936. In comparison, in 1942, Las Vegas had set its all time record high of 117 degrees, a record that would be tied on July 19, 2005. In 1979, Claudette was a weak tropical storm, but do not say that to residents of Alvin, Texas. A phenomenal 43 inches of rain inundated the Houston suburb to set the all time 24-hour rainfall record for the United States. This staggering total is just 10.82 inches shy of the all time annual rainfall record for Wichita which is 53.82 inches set in 2008.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This Day in Weather History: Salina was broiling in 1936

On Thursday, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 6500 block of East Cloud Street in rural Saline County for the report of a theft from a construction site. 

Sometime between July 22-23, 2020, unknown suspect(s) entered the property and stole a Master Force air compressor, a Tool Shop framing nailer, and water pump with a red hose. The tools were taken from a building that was under construction.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $887.

Crimestoppers seeks tips on theft from construction site

Police are investigating an incident in central Salina Thursday morning in which the back of a car was rammed by a pickup.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that a patrol officer was driving in the 1000 block of Highland Avenue at 9:15 a.m. Thursday and noticed a red 2015 Ford Fiesta sitting at an odd angle in the street.  As the officer drove by, he realized the car was up over the curb and had struck a mailbox belonging to a 62-year-old Salina woman, Forrester noted. Damage to the mailbox was estimated at $200 he added.

The driver of the Fiesta told the officer that her car had been hit by a pickup, causing it to strike the mailbox, Forrester explained. 

According to Forrester, "witnesses reported hearing two vehicles accelerating and then a black Ford pickup hit the rear end of the Fiesta causing it to strike the mailbox."

The incident was not random as it appeared that the pickup deliberately struck the back of the car, Forrester noted. A person of interest has been determined, he added. 

Damage to the car was estimated at $1,000, Forrester noted.

Pickup rams car; police looking for driver

A Kansas City, Kan., man was arrested on multiple requested charges late Thursday night after he led a Saline County Sheriff's deputy on a short chase through part of North Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that a deputy noticed a 2005 Dodge Stratus with defective tail lights in the 100 block of West Antrim Avenue at 11:11 p.m. Thursday. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, it took off, traveling at times at 45-50 mph through part of north Salina, Melander said.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle finally stopped in the 100 block of West Hamilton Avenue, and the driver, Adrian Richardson, 27, of Kansas City, Kan., was arrested on the following requested charges, Melander said.

Two passengers in the vehicle were not arrested, he said.

Classes for the  Salina USD 305 2020-21 school year have a new start date.

During a special meeting this morning, the USD 305 Board of Education approved a revised school calendar and plan for safely educating students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 31. Prior to this morning's decision, the start date was Aug. 11.

"We are recommending that we delay the start of school for both students and staff for the 20-21 school year," said Superintendent Linn Exline. "We've been preparing to reopen school since the last school year ended, but a delay at this time would allow for professional learning for all staff. We've had small groups of teachers working, but we haven't had the opportunity to work with all of our faculty, and we have many faculty who have a direct impact each day on student learning in Salina public schools."

Exline noted that the school calendar in place prior to the meeting only had two days of professional learning prior to the first day of classes. 

"Given the likelihood that much of this year will be spent in a hybrid or an off-site model, we really need to have time for teachers to plan for instructional delivery in both of those models," Exline told the board.

She continued, "The reopening guidance from Kansas State Department of Education was released on July 15. Today is July 24. That is not much time to review a thousand-page document and to ensure that we have the number of staff members that we have are ready to go implement the kinds of changes that are being suggested in that document. The guidance included learning competencies and operational guidance for safety."

Exline pointed out that USD 305 personnel had already been working on many of the items in the KSDE guidance.

"But there was additional guidance that we want to consider to make sure that our schools are as safe as possible and that we provide the highest quality education that we possibly can for our students," she said.

Exline said that with the health concerns in the community, USD 305 personnel need to carefully consider the safety guidance from KSDE and how it will be implemented by teachers in their classrooms. 

Exline also discussed the items in the governor's executive order on Monday and how the order will affect USD 305.

"Included in those are temperature checks for anyone entering our buildings, masks for all students, staffs, visitors, and vendors, and hourly hand washing," Exline said. " No-touch thermometers were recently ordered in order for us to be able to do temperature checks of over 7,000 students and over 1,600 staff members on a daily basis prior to them entering the buildings."

Exline also told the board that a remote learning option was added for the 2020-21 school year. 

"Knowing that we have some students who are medically fragile or live in homes that have others that have immuno-compromised health situations, we added an option for remote learning for students this year," she said.

Exline reviewed with the board the proposed reopening phases. She pointed out that Phase 4 was for parent-teacher conferences. 

"We would like some time for parent-teacher conferences to occur prior to school starting. One of the challenges is coming off of last spring when we had the continuous learning model, that is what people think of when they think of remote learning now, and we need to make sure that everybody, parents, students, and staff are on the same page when it comes to what the expectations are for this year," Exline said.

After the board unanimously approved the 2020-21 school calendar, Exline explained the Connect 2 Learn proposal that, if approved by the board, would allow the district to educate students in person, remotely, or in a combination of the two. According to the plan, two options would be available for students. One option, which the district is calling "On-Site Learning," contains three learning environments: on-site, hybrid, and off-site. The other option is for total remote learning.

Exline told the board that staff was recommending that on-site students begin the school year in a hybrid learning model, which would include both face-to-face and online instruction.

According to the plan, "when USD 305 is using a hybrid model, students will not attend school in the school building every day. Instead, half the students will attend in the school building while the other half work at home. This will allow additional social distancing in our classrooms and limit the number of student contacts. Families have been assigned to a cohort A or B for the hybrid model. Changes will not be allowed."

"Our goal this year is to provide a flexible, responsible, responsive environment that ensures the safety of our student, and our staff, and our families, and that also ensures that we have a year-worth of academic and social, emotional growth for all of our students," Exline said.

The board also approved a Coronavirus Relief Fund Agreement with the Saline County Commission. The agreement makes the district eligible to apply for part of the $11,026,434 federal Coronavirus Relief Fund money the county received on Monday. When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

•Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

•Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

•Water contact should be avoided.. Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

•Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.

•If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

•Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

•Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

•Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

•Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

•Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

•Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.•Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.•If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.•Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.Watch ProtocolsA watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.
