The Salina Public Library(SPL) is excited to announce the launch of its second annual&nbsp;“Snowfall of Support”&nbsp;campaign. This year, the initiative features a generous $20,000 challenge gift from community partner Blue Beacon, calling on the community to match their pledge and effectively double the impact of every donation. Funds raised will support the library’s<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/cc57ca72-0933-4dd2-86f4-e69b1e8e2c40">&nbsp;Re-Imagining Our Library&nbsp;initiative</a>, which revitalizes spaces and services for youth and families to learn, play, and grow.

“This campaign is all about coming together,” said Allyson Walker, Head of Fundraising &amp; Development at Salina Public Library. “Just like snowflakes, each contribution may seem small, but when we all come together, the results are transformative. SPL is so grateful for Blue Beacon, their generosity is backing every donation, dollar for dollar, helping build a brighter future for our community.”

The library encourages everyone in the community to get involved and help meet the $20,000 challenge to create a lasting impact.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Evergy, Inc. (NASDAQ: EVRG) today announced third quarter 2024 GAAP earnings of $465.6 million, or $2.02 per share, compared to GAAP earnings of $351.6 million, or $1.53 per share, for the third quarter 2023.

Evergy’s third quarter 2024 adjusted earnings (non-GAAP) and adjusted earnings per share (non-GAAP) were $465.6 million and $2.02, respectively, compared to $432.3 million and $1.88 in 2023.

Third quarter 2024 adjusted earnings (non-GAAP) per share were higher than last year due primarily to new retail rates, FERC regulated investments and growth in weather-normalized demand, partially offset by cooler summer weather and higher depreciation and amortization expense.

"We were pleased to announce a unanimous settlement agreement in our Missouri West rate case which, if approved by the Missouri Public Service Commission (MPSC), delivers a constructive outcome for our Missouri West customers," said David Campbell, Evergy chairman and chief executive officer. Evergy announces Third Quarter 2024 results

Tim O’Connor, president of the Wheat Foods Council, recently sat down with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, for an episode of the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast to discuss how the organization is targeting “wheat influencers” to redefine wheat foods in the public eye.

“We work to increase demand for the 50 percent of wheat that’s produced in the U.S. that’s not exported,” O’Connor said. “It stays here in this marketplace, and we have to deal with the challenges and the opportunities that the U.S. marketplace presents us.”

The Wheat Foods Council is an industry-wide partnership dedicated to increasing domestic wheat foods consumption through nutrition information, research, education and promotional programs. The Council has a unique membership, comprised of the entire wheat value chain, including state wheat commissions supported by wheat checkoff dollars.&nbsp;

“Here we have everybody from the growers, the state wheat commissions, the millers, the bakers, the ingredient suppliers, the life science companies. Everyone in the value chain can participate in the Wheat Foods Council,” O’Connor said. “Because the world looks different to a wheat grower than it does to a miller or a baker. When we can blend all of those points of view together to understand the challenges each sees, we can find a solution that’s a win-win for everyone.”&nbsp;

This includes chefs that set the menus at “industry institutional theaters” like college campuses, corporate campuses, sports venues and other places where people go every day and eat what is on the menu.&nbsp;

The approach to reach these influential groups is similar - meeting these folks where they are and providing them with information on the nutritional value of wheat foods and how this ingredient can help meet consumer wants.

We want them to see wheat foods as something that they want to consume, something that they value rather than buy into many of the trends that have vilified wheat foods.”

This work requires a strategic approach and complex conversations, but at the end of the day, the Wheat Foods Council is providing simple and straightforward answers to consumer questions like: Is this good for me and my family? Do I want to serve this and eat this and feed it to my kids, or is this something I want to stay away from?

Lee Hardware Lofts Phase II grand opening Thursday

A Salina man faces multiple charges after an altercation near Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday led to confrontations with both KWU security and Salina police officers.

At around 3:45 p.m. on Nov. 2, following the KWU football game, three people were walking to their car when they encountered Donovan Green, 25, who was reportedly yelling profanities at a person passing nearby. Green allegedly turned his attention toward the group and then directed his remarks at them. According to Salina Police Cpt. James Feldman, the group warned Green to back off, but Green reportedly charged a 25-year-old man from Fairfax, Virginia, in an attempt to tackle him.

The man from Virginia managed to take Green to the ground and restrained him until KWU security and police arrived.

Officers reported that Green was uncooperative and continued to escalate the situation. According to the report, Green spat in an officer’s face as they attempted to take him into custody. When officers used a restraint device known as a wrap to secure him, Green allegedly head-butted another officer while being placed in the patrol car.

Green was booked into the Saline County Jail and now faces several charges, including battery, two counts of battery against a law enforcement officer, interference, and disorderly conduct.

The survey will help guide local efforts to improve prevention, treatment, and support services.

“We need the community’s voice to create meaningful solutions,” said Meagan Rico, Health Educator. “By understanding local challenges, we can better direct resources to those who need them most.”

The survey, which takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, is open to all Saline County residents. Responses will be used to inform strategies to address the opioid crisis and support those affected by addiction.

The 2024 election results in Kansas demonstrate that the state’s conservative foundation remains firmly intact, with Republicans holding onto important state and federal offices. However, a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/docking/Kansas-Speaks/2024-kansas-speaks-report-finalv3-corrections-10.28.24-execsum-final-bullet-and-10.31.24-appendix-c-crosstabs-table-17-title.pdf">survey</a>, Kansas Speaks, conducted by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University, shows a more nuanced and complex reality.

Despite recent buzz that the presidential race could be tighter, Republicans held strong up and down the ballot. At the state level, they held onto their supermajority in the Kansas Legislature, giving them considerable influence over key issues like taxes, education, and healthcare. This puts them on a collision course with Democratic Governor Laura Kelly, who may find it harder to push back against their agenda, as Republicans will likely have enough votes to override any vetoes she might try to use to block their bills.

Interestingly, the Docking Institute’s survey shows that more Kansans approve of Governor Kelly’s job performance than disapprove, creating an interesting dynamic as she navigates working with a legislature that holds such a strong Republican majority.

On the national front, Kansas’s congressional delegation remains predominantly Republican, with the notable exception of Democratic Representative Sharice Davids in the 3rd District. And since no U.S. Senate seats were up for election this year, the state’s U.S. Senate seats will stay in Republican hands.

Economic concerns clearly weighed heavily on voters, according to the survey. Over half of respondents (51.2%) said inflation had greatly affected their families, and nearly 43% expressed concern about economic threats to their well-being.

President Biden’s low approval ratings in the state, coupled with economic frustrations, likely helped Donald Trump, who won Kansas by a wide margin, continuing a long tradition of Republican victories in presidential races here. In fact, Trump’s margin of victory in 2024 closely mirrors his 2020 performance, indicating his electoral fortunes were not hurt despite being embroiled in legal and political scandals over the last four years.

However, when it comes to some social issues, Kansans appear to be moving in a different direction. In the Docking Institute’s survey, 65.4% of respondents agreed that women, not politicians, should decide whether to have an abortion, and over half (54.9%) said the government should not impose any restrictions on abortion access.

This is in line with the&nbsp;decisive&nbsp;vote in August 2022, when Kansans rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have removed abortion protections. These results suggest that Kansans are willing to break with conservative positions on certain issues, particularly when it comes to personal freedoms.

With a combination of traditional conservative values and an emerging independent streak on key issues, Kansas seems to be heading toward a more dynamic political landscape. While the state’s conservative foundation remains strong, the growing diversity of opinions suggests that Kansas’s political future may be more fluid and open to new perspectives than it has been in the past.

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) is moving closer to launching the Kansas Home Rebates Program, an initiative aimed at helping Kansas households lower energy costs and improve home comfort. With funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, this program will provide $105.6 million to support energy savings for low- to moderate-income households in Kansas.

KCC prepares for Home Rebates program launch in Kansas, seeks public input

Kansas Wesleyan University and Salina’s Church of the Cross have entered into what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind partnership between a United Methodist Church (UMC) and a UMC-affiliated university.

Under terms of the agreement, Church of the Cross — a member of the Great Plains Annual Conference, which comprises more than 700 United Methodist Churches in Kansas and Nebraska — gifted the church’s building and property at 1600 Rush Street in Salina to KWU. The congregation will continue to be based in the building, worship and conduct ministries there while remaining affiliated with the UMC. Kansas Wesleyan will be responsible for the property and have the ability to conduct programs, have offices or run classes on site.

The Salina Family YMCA’s Angel Child Care program, originally started alongside the church, will continue at the site as part of a broadening of the partnership between KWU and the YMCA.&nbsp;

“This is a deeply meaningful moment for Kansas Wesleyan,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president. “Our university ethos is unmistakably intertwined with that of the UMC — Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors — and we are committed to the success of the denomination, both locally and regionally. On a deeper level, we are engaged with the growth, development and support of the congregation of Church of the Cross. We look forward to an excellent relationship with the congregation as we explore opportunities within the facility to benefit the UMC’s mission.”&nbsp;

What better way to do it than to let this building be used to greater capacity while we continue reach our community with God’s grace and love?”

KWU receives historic gift of UM Church of the Cross building, property

The Saline County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday, Nov, 5 in the Salina City County Building, 300 W. Ash Street Salina.&nbsp;

During the meeting the Saline County Board of Commissioners approved a<a href="https://pub-salinecounty.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=8455"> formal agreement </a>with the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, clarifying the allocation and use of county funds for economic development and community marketing initiatives.

The agreement formalizes the county’s $30,000 contribution, which has historically been directed to support the Chamber's economic development division, yet had never been bound by a written contract.

"It does not commit us to a specific dollar amount. It does not lock in $30,000 it just says, whatever the commission budgets for them [ CHAMBER] annually, this is what they will do with that money," said Saline County Administrator Smith-Hanes said.&nbsp;

The new agreement specifies that county funds will support a community marketing plan developed in partnership with several local organizations.

"The Chamber is the only one of those economic development organizations where we've not had a written agreement in the past," Smith-Hanes said.&nbsp;

This plan aims to replace the previous "Imagine Salina" campaign and focuses on promoting Saline County as an attractive place for individuals outside the area to work, shop, live, and lodge.

The Chamber is also exploring additional funding avenues for this initiative, including potential updates to its agreement with the City of Salina concerning the use of transient guest tax revenue.

The Chamber has committed to utilizing these funds specifically for community marketing and workforce development in collaboration with other economic development partners. Under the agreement, the Chamber will provide quarterly reports on marketing efforts and other initiatives to ensure transparency and accountability.

If the Chamber or the county sees a need to shift priorities in the future, either party may propose amendments to the agreement. This new contract also brings the Chamber in line with other county-supported economic development organizations, such as the Salina Community Economic Development Organization, which already operates under a formal agreement with the county.

UPDATED: 2024 Unofficial Election Results

Growing up in Salina as a student of dance instructor Peggy Simms, Alison Hiatt participated in several of the <a href="http://www.salinasymphony.org">Salina Symphony’s</a> annual Christmas Festival concerts, where she performed in ensemble numbers such as “March of the Wooden Soldiers.”

After graduating from Salina Central High School in 2001, Hiatt minored in dance at the University of Kansas. In the years since, she has continued to dance, becoming involved with <a href="http://Www.salinatheatre.com">Theatre Salina</a> and its education program, Center for Theatre Arts, as a performer, choreographer, and dance instructor.

Now Hiatt is returning to her dance roots with the Salina Symphony by performing as a solo dancer featuring her own original choreography.

Hiatt will be the featured dancer in “The Seven Deadly Sins,” the centerpiece presentation of the Salina Symphony’s November concert, “Lights, Camera, Cabaret!”

The concert will be at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at the <a href="https://stiefeltheatre.org">Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts</a>, 151 S. Santa Fe.

“The Seven Deadly Sins” is a satirical ballet with a score by German composer Kurt Weill and a book by the legendary German playwright Bertolt Brecht. The work combines Brecht’s caustic wit, Weill’s cabaret music, and creative dance to explore the complexities of human nature and society.

“It’s an honor to be given this opportunity to work on a piece this brilliant,” said Hiatt, who also is a wife and mother of two and a nurse practitioner in medical oncology at the <a href="https://www.srhc.com/medical_services/tammy_walker_cancer_center.php">Tammy Walker Cancer Center</a> in Salina. “I was given free rein to create whatever movement I wanted, so it’s been an incredible challenge.”

The piece also includes numerous vocal sections, featuring soprano Janie Brokenicky and a Greek Chorus of vocal students from <a href="https://www.kwu.edu">Kansas Wesleyan University</a>.

The Symphony concert will open with dancers from Theatre Salina’s Center for Theatre Arts. The ensemble will perform “Willkommen,” the opening number to the classic musical “Cabaret,” directed by and featuring Maggie Spicer Brown, the theatre’s education director.

The concert also will feature two classic jazz numbers by American composer Leroy Anderson and two new works by Kyle Saulnier, a Vermont-based multi-instrumentalist and composer who fuses American music, modern jazz, and industrial rock.

“It’s kind of a hodgepodge of mixed music, from jazz to cabaret music,” said Salina Symphony conductor and music director Yaniv Segal. “I’ve been dying to do ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ for a long time, and I’m excited to be doing it in a place where these kinds of collaborations are possible.”

“The Seven Deadly Sins” tells the tale of two sisters, Anna I and Anna II, who may actually be the same person. Anna I, the singer, is the principal vocal role. Anna II, the dancer, is heard only infrequently. Anna I is portrayed as a cynical impresario with a practical sense, while Anna II is full of emotion and expressive artistic beauty with an all too human heart. The woman’s “family” is portrayed by a Greek chorus.

The “sisters” set out from the banks of the Mississippi River to seek their fortunes in the big cities of the U.S., intending to send their family enough money to build a house on the river.

“One actress just sings and tells the story, while the other just dances,” Segal said. “(Weill) wrote the part of the family as a barbershop quartet, but we’re using more singers from KWU as a Greek chorus.”

Each of the main seven scenes (which also includes a prologue and epilogue) focuses on one of the seven deadly sins, each encountered in a different American city. These include Sloth (city unnamed), Pride (Memphis), Wrath (Los Angeles), Gluttony (Philadelphia), Lust (Boston), Greed (Baltimore), and Envy (San Francisco).

In the satirical libretto, when Anna II tries to behave morally, she is scolded by Anna I and her family for committing one of the seven deadly sins.

“In each city Anna visits, she has another sin to deal with, but it’s never in a way you expect,” Segal said. “There’s nuance to it. It’s a comment on artists struggling to do things for themselves.”

“The Seven Deadly Sins” premiered in 1933 in Paris in a production produced, directed, and choreographed by the legendary George Balanchine and featuring Weill’s wife, world-renowned actress and cabaret singer Lotte Lenya, as Anna I.

Segal said Brokenicky, who is the vocal music director at Rock Creek High School, co-founder and executive director of the Flint Hills Children’s Choir and an operatic soprano and clinician, is a perfect choice for Anna I.

“She’s performed with the Salina Symphony before, and she’s comfortable in multiple musical genres,” he said. “She’s very thoughtful and has great insight into the text.”

Segal also worked with Hiatt in outlining her dance moves throughout the piece but let her have free rein in choreographing movement that she felt complemented her own style.

“I’m trained in modern and contemporary dance with a little bit of jazz and lyrical,” Hiatt said. “At times I’m reacting directly to Janie as she’s telling the story through voice, and I’m telling the story through movement. We’re putting both parts together the week of the show. It’ll be an exciting experience.”

Other jazz and cabaret-flavored pieces the Salina Symphony will perform during the concert are two short works by Leroy Anderson, “Jazz Legato” and “Jazz Pizzicato.” Anderson was an American composer of short, light concert pieces, many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. Anderson was probably best known for composing “The Syncopated Clock” and the holiday classic “Sleigh Ride.”

“We’ve had requests to do more Leroy Anderson, and this was a great time to do it,” Segal said.

Saulnier is a multi-instrumentalist who performs on acoustic and electric basses and baritone saxophone, specializing in creative, composer-driven projects that blur the lines of traditional genres. He is artistic director of the Vermont Jazz Ensemble and director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra’s Jazz program. He also composes and arranges for his own flagship ensemble, the Awakening Orchestra.

The Salina Symphony will perform two of Saulnier’s pieces: “a foundation of sand.” and “the Sun upon a hill.” Segal said he has known Saulnier for nearly 20 years, but this will be his first opportunity to perform Saulnier’s original music.

“Kyle is a jazz musician but began writing symphonic music, using jazz harmonics and chords,” Segal said. “He will also be playing a baritone sax solo during the concert, improvising onstage like he would with his own jazz band.”

The combination of this “hodgepodge” of classic and contemporary works will make this concert “a very special afternoon,” Segal said.

In the years since, she has continued to dance, becoming involved with <a href="http://Www.salinatheatre.com">Theatre Salina</a> and its education program, Center for Theatre Arts, as a performer, choreographer, and dance instructor.Now Hiatt is returning to her dance roots with the Salina Symphony by performing as a solo dancer featuring her own original choreography.Hiatt will be the featured dancer in “The Seven Deadly Sins,” the centerpiece presentation of the Salina Symphony’s November concert, “Lights, Camera, Cabaret!”The concert will be at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at the <a href="https://stiefeltheatre.org">Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts</a>, 151 S. The work combines Brecht’s caustic wit, Weill’s cabaret music, and creative dance to explore the complexities of human nature and society.“It’s an honor to be given this opportunity to work on a piece this brilliant,” said Hiatt, who also is a wife and mother of two and a nurse practitioner in medical oncology at the <a href="https://www.srhc.com/medical_services/tammy_walker_cancer_center.php">Tammy Walker Cancer Center</a> in Salina. “I was given free rein to create whatever movement I wanted, so it’s been an incredible challenge.”The piece also includes numerous vocal sections, featuring soprano Janie Brokenicky and a Greek Chorus of vocal students from <a href="https://www.kwu.edu">Kansas Wesleyan University</a>.The Symphony concert will open with dancers from Theatre Salina’s Center for Theatre Arts. The ensemble will perform “Willkommen,” the opening number to the classic musical “Cabaret,” directed by and featuring Maggie Spicer Brown, the theatre’s education director.The concert also will feature two classic jazz numbers by American composer Leroy Anderson and two new works by Kyle Saulnier, a Vermont-based multi-instrumentalist and composer who fuses American music, modern jazz, and industrial rock.“It’s kind of a hodgepodge of mixed music, from jazz to cabaret music,” said Salina Symphony conductor and music director Yaniv Segal. “I’ve been dying to do ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ for a long time, and I’m excited to be doing it in a place where these kinds of collaborations are possible.”<h2>A tale of two sisters</h2>“The Seven Deadly Sins” tells the tale of two sisters, Anna I and Anna II, who may actually be the same person. Anna I, the singer, is the principal vocal role. Anna II, the dancer, is heard only infrequently. Anna I is portrayed as a cynical impresario with a practical sense, while Anna II is full of emotion and expressive artistic beauty with an all too human heart. The woman’s “family” is portrayed by a Greek chorus.The “sisters” set out from the banks of the Mississippi River to seek their fortunes in the big cities of the U.S., intending to send their family enough money to build a house on the river.“One actress just sings and tells the story, while the other just dances,” Segal said. “(Weill) wrote the part of the family as a barbershop quartet, but we’re using more singers from KWU as a Greek chorus.”Each of the main seven scenes (which also includes a prologue and epilogue) focuses on one of the seven deadly sins, each encountered in a different American city. These include Sloth (city unnamed), Pride (Memphis), Wrath (Los Angeles), Gluttony (Philadelphia), Lust (Boston), Greed (Baltimore), and Envy (San Francisco).In the satirical libretto, when Anna II tries to behave morally, she is scolded by Anna I and her family for committing one of the seven deadly sins.“In each city Anna visits, she has another sin to deal with, but it’s never in a way you expect,” Segal said. “There’s nuance to it. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Bennington public water supply system located in Ottawa County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a power fluctuation. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Bennington indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

The 2024 Salina Downtown Parade of Lights will brighten the streets of downtown Salina on November 23 at 6 p.m. Parade organizers are reminding participants that the deadline to register their float or entry is Monday, November 18, at noon. Late entries will not be accepted, so those interested must sign up promptly.

The parade will start at Elm Street and proceed down Santa Fe Avenue to Prescott, promising an evening of holiday cheer, twinkling lights, and family fun. Pre-parade performances will kick off at 5 p.m. at the City Lights Stage, offering attendees an early dose of festive entertainment. Performers interested in participating before the parade should indicate their preference upon registration, but performances will not be allowed during the parade.

All lighted entries must adhere to Salina Downtown, Inc.'s electrical and generator safety requirements. Participants are advised to consult a licensed electrician regarding any electrical concerns. Key guidelines include:

Electrical wiring must be properly secured, approved for use, and fused correctly.

Portable generators should be securely mounted with adequate clearance from combustible materials and must remain uncovered.

 Open flames are strictly prohibited on floats and towing vehicles.

Entries failing to meet these safety standards will be disqualified from the parade.

It’s also open to caregivers, family members and anyone in their support system. It's really important not to navigate this diabetes process alone, so (caregivers) can learn how to care for their loved one, or how to prepare meals differently so everyone can have healthier lives.”K-State family and consumer sciences extension agents Franny Eastwood and Chelsea Richmond are among several who have received training to teach the course.“It’s broken down into one session a week for four weeks, with a follow-up session several weeks later,” said Eastwood, who is in K-State’s Marais des Cygne extension district. “So, completing the course is really up to each individual and how quickly they want to go through the information.”Richmond, who is in K-State’s Frontier extension district, said the course focuses on living well with the disease.“There are meal planning tips that participants can walk through, as well as cooking demonstration videos with diabetic-friendly recipes," Richmond said.&nbsp;Additional sessions include information on carbohydrates and sweeteners and what a full plate of food should look like.
