A historical marker unveiled in Ellis County last week tells the story of a black community and white homesteaders and how their journeys have intersected in the past and again today.

A marker was dedicated Sept. 17 at the site of the Walz Homestead on the Ellis Trail. The marker is located 10 miles north of Ellis on Saline River Road off of 110th Avenue.

The Ellis Trail ran 35 miles from the Ellis to Nicodemus. Nicodemus is the only remaining community west of the Mississippi established by African Americans after the Civil War.

About 380 black settlers, most of whom were recently freed slaves, arrived from Kentucky at Ellis by rail in fall 1877.

They walked the rest of the way to their new settlement via what would become the Ellis Trail. It took two days. They arrived on Sept. 17, 1877, 143 years ago to the day of the dedication, at the site of Nicodemus.

Nicodemus was the first settlement in Graham County, and the settlers there helped organize the county.

At the time the trail was in use, Ellis was the terminus of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. Angela Bates, a descendant of the Nicodemus settlers, said the Ellis Trail remained an important route for Nicodemus residents to travel to Ellis for supplies. Before other post offices were established, Nicodemus residents also traveled to Ellis for the mail.

"This is really a part of our history here in Kansas. I know we live in 2020 and everyone is concerned about COVID and the election. But our forefathers, white, black, green, red, it doesn't matter, they were part of building this nation, and they were the ones who dared to endure things we dare not to endure."

When some of the black settlers from Kentucky first arrived at the settlement site, it was so stark they returned to Kentucky. Early settler Rev. Hickman's wife was said upon arriving at Nicodemus she sat down and cried.

Bates said it took some research to determine where the trail ran. A letter from one of the descendants helped pinpoint landmarks like Happy Hollow. A county road now bears that name. Wagon ruts are still visible amongst the sunflowers and bluestem in the pasture where the Ellis Trail traversed the Walz homestead.

"The whole valley has come to life for me," Angle Bates said. "The whole trail has, and meeting people along the way has been a wonderful thing."

Bates grew up in Pasadena, Calif., but said she has many happy memories of coming back for family reunions in Nicodemus during the summers. She was let to run loose in a town where everyone was considered a relative. She hid at the end of the summer break, because she didn't want to go home.

"I always had a desire in my heart to see what I could do to preserve the history of Nicodemus because it was a wonderful place for me as a child to come back to every summer," she said.

The Nicodemus National Historic Site&nbsp;was established in 1996, and Bates was instrumental in the push to establish the site as part of the National Parks System.

"There is no history without the people, so I am just a steward of it," she said. "I am hoping we just don't forget, because if you don't turn around and look to where you've come from, you'll have no idea what's in front of you."

The Rev. Victor Williams, who portrays Rev. Roundtree — one of the founders of Nicodemus — for the Nicodemus Historical Society, spoke to the group Thursday.

"I want to thank God. This means so much, all of you," he said. "The Walz family are my friends. I have learned to love them. Through Angela, we were able to come down that Ellis Trail."

Williams' great-great-grandmother, Emma Williams, was among the original group to walk the trail to Nicodemus. She was carrying the first baby to be born in Nicodemus.

The remains of the Mandota Post Office, which was on the site of the original Walz family homestead, is still visible to the west of the marker. Allen Walz lives in a house built by his grandfather in 1911 across the road from the marker and the former post office.

Many members of the Walz family were on hand at the dedication of the marker.

The marker depicts historical Walz family photos as well as a photo of a post card sent to one of the members of the Walz family to the&nbsp;Mandota Post Office. Henry Walz, a 105-year-old patriarch of the family, died last year. Money from his memorial was donated to the Nicodemus Historical Society and ultimately helped paid for the Ellis Trail marker.

"When I heard what Angela chose to do with the money, first of all I cried," said Linda Walz Thompson, Henry's daughter, "and then I thought dad would just be smiling so much. This would just have thrilled him. Angela, I love you dearly, and that goes for all of you in Nicodemus."

Leroy Walz, 77, said his great-grandfather W.A.R. Walz, a German immigrant, likely used the trail to make his way from Ellis to the homestead and stopped at that spot because it was the first free land he came to.&nbsp; It was also close to the Saline River, which could be used as a water source for livestock.&nbsp;

The family started in a dugout. The homesteaders shared water from their hand-dug well with those who passed by on the trail.

Roma McConkey of Olathe, daughter of Henry Walz, said, "This trail did not become real to me, even though we've talked about the house and we've got family pictures over here by this house, until the day Angela (Bates) said to me, 'I bet our grandmothers waived to each other on this because that is where she lived.'"

The marker at the Walz Homestead is only one of five large signs the descendants of the Nicodemus settlers hope to install in the area.&nbsp;More&nbsp; directional signs with a silhouette of a wagon will also mark the trail. The directional signs will also be located at the post offices along the trail. These included Crescent, which was the original site of Palco, Amboy and Keybar. Logan will be also included in the trail as Nicodemus was part of the mail route coming back toward Ellis.

Next year, Bates said she hopes to take a group on a walking tour of the trail.

“Additional cases in today’s update are as a result of those that did not follow social distancing at social gatherings (i.e. sleepovers, weddings, funerals, BBQ’s, etc.), did not stay home when sick, participated in gatherings without masks or social distancing, and children attending school when they were sick.” said Jason Tiller, Health Officer. “We continue to see community spread. This virus is an equal opportunity virus, it does not discriminate,” Mr. Tiller said. “We each, individually, have a responsibility to ourselves, our family, and our community to follow all the things that we know works to slow the spread. Masks are only one part of all of the things that individuals need to do to help slow the spread. Stay home if you are not feeling well, wear masks in social settings, social distance, and wash your hands.”

There are 27 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, September 23 report. The total for the county is now 719, with 216 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 492 that have recovered, and a total of 11 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reporting that they have 8 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital, the COVID19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized. • The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation is assisting small businesses in response to the negative economic impacts of COVID-19 with funds allocated by Saline County from the Coronavirus&nbsp; Relief Funds. The Foundation’s program will offer grants of up to $25,000 to eligible small for-profit businesses located in Saline County, Kansas. These grant funds are designed to assist with loss of income due to the business interruption impacts of COVID-19 and the Stay at Home Order. Saline County: 27 new COVID-19 cases; county total at 719

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department toady reported two additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 265. Additionally, the health department updated the county's COVID-19 case data.

Information about the most recent cases, as provided by the health department, is as follows.

●Positive case No. 264 is a symptomatic female in her 30s with known exposure related to a local nursing home.

●Positive case No. 265 is a symptomatic male in his 90s with known exposure related to a local assisted living facility.

The updated case data includes the following.

●Ventilated cases (may not represent current ventilated cases): 4

📹 FTC: What to do when someone steals your identity

ABILENE -- A Tennessee man was arrested in connection to multiple storage unit burglaries in Abilene.

On Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of North Buckeye Avenue for the report of suspicious activity, according to a news release from Jason Wilkins, assistant chief of police. A citizen had observed a suspicious male at a storage unit facility in the 300 block of Northeast 14th Street. 

Officers learned that the man fled on foot prior to their arrival, but were able to locate Joshua Patrick, 22, of Dickson, Tenn., in the 2000 block of North Buckeye Avenue, the release noted.

Officers discovered a total of nine storage units located on Northeast 14th Street that had been broken into, however, they were able to determine that no property had been taken from the units, according to information from Wilkins.

As a result of the investigation, Patrick was booked into the Dickinson County Jail and could face charges that include multiple counts of burglary and criminal damage to property, Wilkins noted. 

Additionally, Patrick is believed to be involved in multiple storage unit burglaries in Junction City, according to Wilkins.

"This incident epitomizes the adage 'see something, say something.' Fortunately, an observant citizen alerted our officers to activity they felt was suspicious. This citizen's actions likely saved property loss for several individuals, and helped identify a suspect in numerous crimes," Wilkins noted.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about stolen hydraulic cylinders

The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force has named 92 schools, including Cottonwood, Oakdale and Sunset elementary schools, as recipients of the 2019 Challenge Awards.

The awards recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in their school population. Since its inception in 2002, more than 1,700 awards have been presented to schools across the state.

“I congratulate the staff members for the innovations and hard work recognized by these awards,” said Linn Exline, USD 305 Superintendent. “This recognition reinforces the important work teachers do for our students and community every day.” 

Certificates of Merit were presented by Kansas State Board of Education member Deena Horst, District 6, at the Sept. 22 special board of education meeting.

The Confidence in Public Education Task Force is a nonprofit corporation whose primary purpose is to strengthen confidence in Kansas public education and to increase awareness of the positive aspects of public education in the state. The Task Force was created in 1981.

Members of the Task Force include American Association of University Women; Kansas PTA; Kansas Association of School Boards; Kansas National Education Association; Kansas State Board of Education; Kansas State High School Activities Association; Kansas Partners in Education; League of Women Voters – Kansas; and United School Administrators of Kansas.

Crossroads Rock & Rod Show Saturday at Tony's Pizza Events Center

Police are investigating the theft of a trailer and dune buggy from a northeast Salina neighborhood early Thursday.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning that sometime between 3-8:30 a.m. Thursday, someone stole a black 10-foot by 5-foot bumper pull trailer with a red steel-framed dune buggy on it from a residence in the 1100 block of Gypsum Avenue. The trailer and dune buggy were valued at $2,500, he added. 

Video surveillance from the area is being sought, according to Hanus.

"If anyone observed a trailer and dune buggy, which they feel matches the above description, please contact the Salina Police Department to provide a location and additional information available," Hanus noted.

Braelyn Whittaker, 10, joined more than 150 elementary school aged girls to compete for the inaugural titles of 2020 Miss Elementary America in Little Rock, Arkansas from Sept. 5-12. She is the daughter of Lance and Shelley Whittaker and a fifth grader at Smoky Valley Middle School in Lindsborg.

Braelyn represented the state of Kansas in the 5th grade division where she competed in formal wear, fashion runway, and community service.

The Miss Elementary America's National platform is B.R.A.V.E. - Building Respect And Values for Everyone. Braelyn has made numerous presentations, focusing on anti-bullying on our local schools, and will continue to raise awareness as a national titleholder. Braelyn enjoys teaching children how to reduce the effects of bullying, and how to create a safe environment in their communities. From reading anti-bullying books to preschool and elementary children, to having children take the B.R.A.V.E. Pledge, Braelyn is proving that we can all make a difference!

After last week’s announcement of strong placement within regional rankings, Kansas Wesleyan continued its recent positive momentum Thursday with the announcement of a new scholarship, an honor targeted to valedictorians.

The KWU Valedictorian Scholarship is a full tuition award that&nbsp;Kansas resident graduating high school seniors that have achieved valedictorian status with a minimum GPA of 3.9. Home school students who record a 29 ACT are also eligible.

“We are excited to announce the valedictorian scholarship,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of Advancement, Admissions and Marketing. “We believe in promoting high achieving academic students, and there is no better way to do that than by honoring the best of the best!”

All potential recipients must complete a valedictorian questionnaire and a campus visit by April 1 to secure eligibility.

Use non-retirement account to pay off debt?

I have $11,000 in a mutual fund account that is not a retirement account. My wife has a retirement account through her job as a teacher, but I do not have one at all. We’re in Baby Step 2, so should we cash out the $11,000 in the investment account to help pay off debt?

If this money is designated as non-retirement funds, I’d say go ahead and cash it out. Use the money to pay down debt, and continue to stay focused working the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/dave-ramsey-7-baby-steps" target="_blank">Baby Steps</a>. Get that debt paid off, build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, then it’s&nbsp;your&nbsp;turn to start investing.

The quickest way to build wealth is to get control of your largest wealth-building tool—your income. When all your money is going out the door to other people, you don’t have that tool at your disposal when it comes to important things like saving and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/smartvestor/investment-calculator?snid=tools.investingcalc" target="_blank">investing.</a>&nbsp;There’s some math in there, but it’s also about behavior and being intentional. Getting out of debt dramatically shortens the distance between you and wealth.

A lot of people are having some major “never again” moments right now in the wake of COVID-19 and all the other stuff 2020 has thrown at us. They’re saying things like, “Never again will I be broke, never again will I have debt, and never again will I live with no&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chrishogan360.com/riq/" target="_blank">savings</a>&nbsp;to help take care of me and my family.”

You can do this, Chris. Get after it!&nbsp;

Simply put, a zero-based budget is income minus outgo equals zero.&nbsp;If you earn $4,000 a month, and you’re doing a zero-based&nbsp;<a href="https://www.everydollar.com/guide-to-budgeting-dave-says" target="_blank">budget</a>, every item you spend, save, give and invest should add up to $4,000. It’s a method of knowing where every single one of your dollars is going. Most people don’t live on a budget. They just cash checks, write checks, then they look up and wonder where all their money went. Not having a plan, especially for your money, is a&nbsp;bad&nbsp;plan.

List all your income from all sources for the month.&nbsp;Next, list every single expense you have each month.&nbsp;Rent, food, cable, phones, and anything else you pay for gets added to the list. Your expenses vary from one month to the next, which is why you make a new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/money-habits-we-need-to-break" target="_blank">spending</a>&nbsp;plan each month.

Now, here’s where it gets real. Subtract your income from your expenses.&nbsp;Ideally, this number will be zero. It might take some practice, so don’t be discouraged if everything doesn’t balance out perfectly the first few times. All that means is you need to find a way to bring one of the numbers up, the other one down—or both. But whatever you do, don’t spend a dime that’s not accounted for.

If you have a problem with spending more than you make, make some cuts in order to equalize your income and your outgo. Using coupons, cutting back on groceries, or carpooling to work are great ideas to reduce spending. If you want to generate more money, get a second job on weekends or sell some stuff.

You’re the boss of the budget—in the beginning. Once it’s committed to paper, in a spreadsheet, or on an app like EveryDollar,&nbsp;the budget is the boss!

On Sept. 25, 1957, nine Black students who'd been forced to withdraw from Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, because of unruly white crowds were escorted to class by members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division. 

In 1789, the first United States Congress adopted 12 amendments to the Constitution and sent them to the states for ratification. (Ten of the amendments became the Bill of Rights.)

In 1904, a New York City police officer ordered a female automobile passenger on Fifth Avenue to stop smoking a cigarette. (A male companion was arrested and later fined $2 for "abusing" the officer.)

MANHATTAN – Before you get tempted to take a swat at that yellow jacket wasp buzzing around the garden, think twice.&nbsp;

It’s probably doing you more good than harm.&nbsp;

Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said yellow jackets feed on soft-bodied insects, such as caterpillars and sawfly larvae that can be much more harmful than the yellow jacket to garden produce.&nbsp;

Further, the yellow jacket is more interested in areas where there is human or pet food, and compost piles, rather than flowers.&nbsp;

“If a nest of yellow jackets is found, it is best to avoid the area because the wasps are&nbsp;more aggressive near their nest,” Upham said. “The nest should not be destroyed unless it presents a danger to people.”&nbsp;

 </figure>MANHATTAN – Before you get tempted to take a swat at that yellow jacket wasp buzzing around the garden, think twice.&nbsp;It’s probably doing you more good than harm.&nbsp;Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said yellow jackets feed on soft-bodied insects, such as caterpillars and sawfly larvae that can be much more harmful than the yellow jacket to garden produce.&nbsp;Further, the yellow jacket is more interested in areas where there is human or pet food, and compost piles, rather than flowers.&nbsp;“If a nest of yellow jackets is found, it is best to avoid the area because the wasps are&nbsp;more aggressive near their nest,” Upham said. “The nest should not be destroyed unless it presents a danger to people.”&nbsp;The yellow jacket wasp is about ¾ inch long with black and yellow coloring and long, dark wings. Because of that, it can often be confused with honey bees; however, bees tend to be more round in appearance.&nbsp;“We have had reports of yellow jackets becoming more noticeable as they scavenge for food,” Upham said. “They are most active up to the time that the weather turns cold in the fall.”&nbsp;Yellow jacket wasps will sting when threatened. Upham suggests avoiding areas where yellow jackets are nesting, as well as removing food sources near living areas. “This includes picking up and disposing of fruit that may have dropped from trees,” Upham said.&nbsp;Time of year…&nbsp;Yellow jacket wasps aren't the only things on gardener's minds right now. Spring and summer vegetables have likely all been harvested, Upham said, but that doesn’t mean the work is done.&nbsp;For example, October is a good time to plant garlic to increase the chances of producing large, quality cloves next summer.
