MANHATTAN —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/bluekey/activities/Quest.html" target="_blank">Quest</a>, the freshman honorary at Kansas State University, has 32 new members for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Quest, which is offered through&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/bluekey" target="_blank">Blue Key Senior Honorary</a>, works to develop freshmen leaders through mentorship, personal development and campus involvement. Quest provides ambitious freshmen leaders with the tools necessary to give back to the K-State family. Upon selection, Quest members are paired with mentors from Blue Key and they get a behind-the-scenes look at everything that K-State has to offer, attending special events and meetings several times a month to build community and getting tailored leadership development from Blue Key.

Local, area students named to Quest freshman honorary at KSU

A porch was heavily damaged after a car plowed into it early this morning.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, it appeared that a white 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was traveling northbound on Montrose Street, ran the stop sign at West South Street, continued across West South Street and up into the yard of 918 West South Street, striking the front porch of the residence. The front of the vehicle was completely under the porch, Forrester reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. Thursday, he added.

The residence was occupied by five persons at the time of the crash, however none were injured, Forrester noted.

A witness observed two subjects running from the scene, according to Forrester.   

He reported the registered owner advised police that the car was recently sold.

A city inspector was called in to check the porch as there was a concern of it collapsing, Forrester noted.

One year ago: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched a formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump; the probe focused partly on whether Trump abused his presidential powers and sought help from the government of Ukraine to undermine Democratic foe Joe Biden. The Metropolitan Opera announced that Plácido Domingo had agreed to withdraw from his slate of scheduled performances following allegations of sexual harassment. ABILENE -- After slightly more than one hour, the Abilene City Commission took no action on a proposed mask ordinance during a special meeting Wednesday afternoon.

During the meeting, the commissioners heard from more than 10 Abilene citizens, all of whom were against all or part of the proposed ordinance. A number of those who spoke told commissioners that the proposed ordinance violated their rights. One man even threatened to sue should the ordinance be passed. 

Commissioners also heard from Dr. Brian Holmes, chief medical officer for Dickinson County, who refuted some of the claims made by the citizens who spoke. Holmes reiterated that the wearing of masks does, indeed, help to deter the spread of COVID-19.

In the end, however, the motion to approve the ordinance died for a lack of a second.

There are 30 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Monday, September 21 report. The total for the county is now 692, with 204 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 477 that have recovered, and a total of 11 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reporting that they have 11 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital, the COVID-19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized.

The Foundation’s program will offer grants of up to $25,000 to eligible small for-profit businesses located in Saline County, Kansas. These grant funds are designed to assist with loss of income due to the business interruption impacts of COVID-19 and the Stay at Home Order. Art Center galleries will be open until 7 p.m., and the Art Center Cinema reopens with a 6 p.m. screening of Kevin Willmott’s The 24th.

Eileen Roscina,&nbsp;Widening Circles, through Nov. 8

Roscina is an artist, experimental filmmaker and naturalist currently living in Denve. She earned a BFA from Emerson College in Boston, Mass., is an MFA candidate at University of Colorado, Boulder, and trained at the School of Botanical Art and Illustration in Denver. Through biomimicry and the study of biophilia, her work examines human’s spiritual and social (dis)connection with nature, and seeks to raise questions about realizing a radically different metaphoric mapping of time, space and our place in the world.

A. Mary Kay,&nbsp;Zenith, through Nov. 8

A. Mary Kay lives and paints in rural Lindsborg. She was born in London England, and has lived in the United States for 30 years. She received a BA Honors in Fine Art from Bath Academy of Art UK, an MA from Goldsmiths College London University UK, and an MFA in Painting from Yale University. Recently her work was included in 2019- 20 Rural/Urban Invitational II at The Volland Store in Volland, Kan., and in 2018 Big Botany Spencer Museum Kansas University, Lawrence. 

She was selected as one of three artists to represent Kansas in 2014 for the exhibition State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now, at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Bentonville. Later Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art toured a show of works from State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now, where the destinations were Mint Museum Charlotte N.C., Dixon Gallery and garden Memphis Tenn., and The Jepson Center Telfair Museums, Savannah, Ga. 

Fidencio Fifield-Perez,&nbsp;Birdwatchers, through Oct. 4

Fidencio Fifield-Perez was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, but raised in the United States after his family migrated when he was only six. His current work examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them. In his work, Fifield-Perez manipulates paper surfaces and maps to refer to the crafts and customs used to celebrate festivals and mourn the dead, which he learned as a child in Oaxaca. For Fifield-Perez, these techniques are a way to reconnect with a time and place no longer present.

Admission to the galleries is always free. Guests are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Free COVID-19 drive-thru testing Saturday in Abilene

While many Americans are sheltering at home to help “flatten the curve” and slow the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), they might be tempted to buy or use questionable products that claim to help diagnose, treat, cure, and even prevent COVID-19.

Because COVID-19 has never been seen in humans before, there are currently no vaccines to prevent or drugs to treat COVID-19 approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA is working with vaccine and drug manufacturers to develop new vaccines for and find drugs to treat COVID-19 as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, some people and companies are trying to profit from this pandemic by selling unproven and illegally marketed products that make false claims, such as being effective against the coronavirus.

These&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/health-fraud-scams/fraudulent-coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-products">fraudulent products</a>&nbsp;that claim to cure, treat, or prevent COVID-19 haven’t been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness and might be dangerous to you and your family.

The FDA is particularly concerned that these deceptive and misleading products might cause Americans to delay or stop appropriate medical treatment, leading to serious and life-threatening harm. It’s likely that the products do not do what they claim, and the ingredients in them could cause adverse effects and could interact with, and potentially interfere with, essential medications.

The following organizations received funding:●Martin Luther King, Jr. Child Development Center, $5,000 to replace the fence at the center.●USD 305, $5,000 to purchase food items for weekend food bags for children.●Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol &amp; Rescue Squad, $2,808.57 to purchase a new rescue boat to continue to offer services.●St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, $2,725 to support learning during COVID and beyond by purchasing new classroom equipment.●Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, $1,745.98 to purchase equipment to be able to host virtual meetings and trainings.●Christ Cathedral Montessori School, $1,000 for classroom learning materials specific to the Montessori method of teaching.●Salina Area United Way, $500 to purchase videography equipment to increase marketing and communication to donors, volunteers, and the public in the ten-county service area.This round of grants was made possible by four funds at the community foundation: the Fund for Early Childhood Care, Education and Development, established by Mark and Jane Berkley to better prepare children in Ottawa and Saline Counties for kindergarten; the Fund for Greater Salina, which supports the charitable needs of the community; the Kansas Health Foundation Fund, that supports the public health of Saline County; and the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund, which supports hands-on learning opportunities for youth in the areas of arts and humanities and science, technology and invention.Applications for the foundation’s next community grant cycle are due by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2020.
