Recent obituaries



There was an Asian financial crisis in 1997-98. Due to currency speculation, the value of money in Southeast Asian countries plummeted, some by half. But China had pegged the value of its currency to the U.S. dollar at a ratio of 8.3 RMB to the dollar in 1994 and held it there until 2005. While most Asian countries suffered from inflation and job losses, China held steady and prevented additional speculation. This stabilized the Asian economies. Asia recovered due to China’s holding the line.

The “Great Recession” of 2008 originated in the U.S. due to our banks making subprime mortgages (home loans to borrowers with poor credit) and then spread worldwide. While this occurred at the end of President Bush’s administration, President Obama had to restart the economy by providing an economic stimulus, such as funding “shovel-ready” projects. This gradually restored the U.S. economy, beginning the 11-year recovery that just ended with the current pandemic.

However, political resistance kept the amount of U.S. stimulus low. But China cut loose with far more stimulus money. China’s year-over-year increase in GDP did fall from nearly 20 percent to eventually 6 percent. The number of lower class folks entering the middle class slowed. But construction continued and modernization moved ahead. Some economists credit that major input into China’s massive economy with preventing a Second Great Depression. &nbsp;

Today, every Western country is expecting a decrease in annual GDP compared to last year.

But South Korea, Taiwan and China may be exceptions. While China brought its factories, schools and population to a complete standstill in the first quarter of the 2020 year, public cooperation and cell phone tracking ended the pandemic in all but a few “border” regions: illegal migrants from North Korea into Jilin, from Siberia into the Harbin area, uncontrolled movement into the Western Xinjiang Province, and airline passengers bringing the European COVID-19 strain back into the Beijing airports.

According to Keith Bradsher of the&nbsp;New York Times, China’s factories began re-opening in late February and early March. “Exports soared in July to their second-highest level ever, nearly matching the record-setting Christmas rush last December.”

Because other manufacturing nations are to some extent shut down, China is the world’s major producer of medical supplies that are desperately needed. Even with an average 25 percent tariff placed on U.S. imports from China, purchases of all of their products have not significantly declined.

New calculations based on near-record production in the April-June quarter would increase China’s total year GDP to two percent over last year!

Another very important factor in recovery is school funding. In the United States, after including both the federal coronavirus relief packages and schools’ state rainy day funds, an analysis by the National Education Association anticipates a 20 percent reduction in the education workforce. American schools are primarily financed by state and local taxes and the economic slowdown means substantial reductions in tax revenue. And in our schools, the major budget line is salaries.

But in China, provincial and national support for schools will continue at regular levels. They will not cutback educational funding for their K-12 students, unlike our tax-based system. In addition, the older Chinese on average save over half their income. Thus their 2-3 month lockdown did not result in hunger, eviction from apartments and other tragedies. And although Chinese higher education is heavily tuition-based, the family support mostly remains intact for students to continue their college.

We should be glad that the Far East economy is mostly up and running. They will not only be able to supply the medical and digital supplies that the world needs, but they will be able to buy beef and pork and other exports that support our economy. They have a middle class much larger than ours and their return to normal will help our economy eventually return to normal as well.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Over two decades ago, David M. Lampton of the National Committee on US-China Relations stated: “If most Americans had even the foggiest idea of the change that has occurred in China, they would be cheering [instead of looking for ways to punish China].”

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: China may see 2% increase in GDP

Former prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who'd helped two murderers escape from a maximum-security lockup, said she regretted her "horrible mistake" as she was sentenced in Plattsburgh, New York, to up to seven years behind bars. Trevor Noah debuted as host of "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central. Frankie Ford, 76, a rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues singer whose 1959 hit "Sea Cruise" brought him international fame at age 19, died in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Voters in Afghanistan went to the polls to elect a president for the fourth time since a U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taliban regime in 2001; the vote was marred by violence, Taliban threats and widespread allegations of mismanagement. MANHATTAN —&nbsp;The&nbsp;Kansas Department of Agriculture has funds available for the National Organic Certification Cost Share Program (NOCCSP). 

Through this program, farms, ranches and businesses that produce, process or package certified organic agricultural products may be reimbursed for eligible expenses.

The purpose of the NOCCSP is to defray the costs of receiving and maintaining organic certification under the National Organic Program. For FY 2020–2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency is revising the reimbursement amount to 50 percent of the certified organic operation’s eligible expenses, up to a maximum of $500 per scope. Scopes include the areas of crops, livestock, wild crops and handling (i.e., processing). This change is due to a limited amount of funding available and will allow a larger number of certified organic operations to receive assistance.

FSA awards the NOCCSP funds to eligible state agencies that serve as administering entities who work directly with organic operations to reimburse organic certification costs. The current period of qualification for organic operations seeking reimbursements is from Oct. 1, 2019, through Sept. 30, 2020. Applications are now being accepted through Dec. 15, 2020, or until all funds are expended, whichever comes first.

It is the mission of KDA to support all facets of agriculture, including lending support to those who wish to market and sell their products as certified organic. 📹FTC: Free trials can be costly

A variety of items are on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Commissioners are scheduled to begin with a 2:30 p.m. study session in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. "Major Capital Expenditures Update for Solid Waste Landfill" is the subject of the study session.

The regular commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Monday in room 107 of the City-County Building. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

Commissioners are being asked to proclaim October 2020 as National Arts and Humanities Month in the City of Salina. Brittany  Willer, chair of the Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Commission is scheduled to read the proclamation.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS), the first, a 2.3 magnitude quake, struck at 11:29 a.m. It was centered just east and a bit south of the intersection of 1000 Avenue and Quail Road.

The second quake was a 2 magnitude quake and struck at 9:47 p.m., KGS reported. It was centered north-northwest of Hope, north of 1000 Avenue and between Nail Road and Oat Road.

We're in for some cooler starts, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita.

Looking ahead to the upcoming work and school week, temperatures will start on the cooler side, but moderate by mid-week. The cooler temperatures on Monday will be accompanied by breezy conditions and filtered sunshine, NWS noted.

Additionally, below normal temperatures are expected for the start of October, which begins Thursday.

Following is the forecast for the week from NWS.

Today A chance of rain and thunderstorms before 3 p.m., then a chance of rain between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 70. Breezy, with a north northeast wind 16 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

NWS: Cooler start to the week and October

It all happened in a week. In early 2020, wheat flour sales were continuing a long term slump. Then COVID-19 hit.&nbsp;&nbsp;Suddenly, stay-at-home orders began to be issued across the nation. People started hoarding toilet paper, and there was a run on flour in the stores.&nbsp;

One Kansas flour miller adjusted rapidly, doubling its flour production capacity. This achievement was so remarkable that this company was recognized as an Ag Hero by the Kansas Department of Agriculture during the 2020 Ag Growth Summit.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bob Morando is the CEO of this remarkable company known as Farmer Direct Foods.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bob grew up in Abilene and studied milling science at K-State. His career took him all over the country, working for businesses such as General Mills, Kraft, and Con-Agra.&nbsp;

In 2016, he came back to Abilene to care for his elderly mother. A college roommate encouraged him to apply for the CEO position that was open at Farmer Direct Foods, and Bob got the job.&nbsp;

Farmer Direct Foods had begun back in 1988 as a cooperative of white wheat growers, organized to help producers earn a premium for better quality wheat. In 2003, they built a flour mill in New Cambria, near Salina.&nbsp;

“White wheat is a milder, sweeter flavored wheat,” Bob said. “All our wheat is stone-ground here at the mill.”&nbsp;

Identity assurance is a key concept at Farmer Direct Foods. “We work with some 50 growers across the state,” Bob said. “Some are fourth or fifth generation farmers. We work with them so that we can know what farm the wheat came off of. People want to know where their food came from.”&nbsp;

Farmer Direct Foods sells to large bakers such as the King Arthur company as well as Tortilla King in Moundridge, Kansas; home bakers, local bake shops like Radinas Coffeehouse in Manhattan, and the Friendship House in Wamego, and even pizzerias in Chicago. However, flour sales nationally were in a five-year slump as of early 2020.&nbsp;

Then everything changed. As the pandemic spread and stay-at-home orders were issued, Bob suddenly started getting calls. “We’re running out of flour,” he was told. The supply chain got a jolt from the sudden surge in home baking. “It felt like things changed overnight,” Bob said.&nbsp;

Farmer Direct Foods moved quickly to respond to the market. “Fortunately, we had just placed a big order for flour bags, so we had supplies to meet the demand,” Bob said.&nbsp;

K-State cancelled in-person classes due to the pandemic, so Bob called his old friends in the milling science department. “If all the kids are freed up, could a couple of them come work for me?” he asked. Bob also located a couple of recently-retired flour millers who were willing to come back onto a payroll.&nbsp;

“Five days later, we had doubled our production capacity,” Bob said.&nbsp;

The mill was now running two shifts, six days a week. Since then, the company has been going full speed to respond to the demand. “We have not let off the gas pedal since March,” Bob said.&nbsp;

“We went from 18 trucks a month to 45 trucks a month. Normally we make 12 million pounds of flour a year. This year, we’re on pace to make 20 million.”&nbsp;

The working relationship with K-State milling science students went so well that Bob has decided to make the internships with the department an ongoing program.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We have set up two internships there now,” he said.&nbsp;

White wheat is still the staple product that goes into every bag of flour at Farmer Direct Foods. “People tell me, `Your flour is the best product,’” Bob said.&nbsp;

That’s good to hear for a business located in the rural community of New Cambria, population 126 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Bob Morando, Farmer Direct Foods

Let’s talk about generational wealth. When you hear that term, you might picture “old money” or a huge fortune that gets passed down through the family line and think,&nbsp;But my family never had that kind of money. How could I ever build that kind of wealth on my own?

Well, here’s some truth. It doesn’t matter where you started. It matters where you finish. It’s never too late to start building a legacy to leave for your future family, so here are four of the most important things you can do now in order to build long-term wealth:

Having a monthly budget is a surefire way to stay in control of your money and use your income to its full potential. An easy way to start budgeting is by downloading a free budgeting app (like EveryDollar), where you can enter all your income and expenses for the month and keep track of your purchases.

If an app isn’t your thing, you can do it the old-school way on paper or a spreadsheet. It doesn’t really matter, as long as you make sure every single dollar of your income has a job to do.

Believe it or not, the key to wealth-building isn’t a high income. Your income is a&nbsp;tool&nbsp;for wealth-building, and a high-paying job won’t hurt. But what’s even more important is margin (that’s how much you have left over at the end of the month). In order to have a lot of margin, you need to live on less than you make.

How do you do that? Use your budget to set limits for yourself, and then stick to those limits. For example, the recommended amount to spend on housing is 25% of your income. Or, you might choose to set your housing budget at 15% so you’ll save more. You could buy generic at the grocery store (even if you know you can afford name brand) in order to cut back on food costs. It’s all about finding creative ways to save instead of spending all your money just because you can. This is the millionaire mindset.

Before you start investing, make sure you’re completely out of debt and have saved up three-to-six months of expenses in a fully funded emergency fund.

Then start contributing 15% of your income to a 401(k) if your company offers a match, or open up a Roth IRA. Once this step is complete, you’ll be free to start tackling your bigger savings goals, like saving for your dream house or your kids’ college fund.

You’re more likely to go over your budget, and spend money on things you don’t need when you’re trying to keep up with someone else (or someone else’s Instagram feed). That person might&nbsp;look&nbsp;rich, but you have no idea if they actually&nbsp;are&nbsp;rich. They could’ve put all their fancy stuff on a credit card!

It’s always better to have money than just&nbsp;look like you have money. So, take a chill pill, get off social media if you have to, and stay focused on your own financial goals. You’ll be a lot happier, and you’ll reach your savings goals a lot faster.

A federal judge blocked new Trump administration rules that would allow the government to keep immigrant children in detention facilities with their parents indefinitely.

Cloud County Community College’s theatre department is taking its upcoming production to a virtual level.

The musical, “The Secret Garden,” is scheduled to be performed virtually Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.

The musical was originally scheduled for the spring 2020 semester, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-person classes at the college, the performance was moved to the fall. To adhere to social distancing guidelines, the decision was made to stage the performance virtually.

The play, based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is set in the early 1900s. Mary Lennox, a young English girl born in India, is orphaned by a cholera outbreak when she is 10 years old. She is sent to live with her uncle, a hermit, in England. Her own personality blossoms as she and a young gardener bring new life to a neglected garden, as well as her sickly cousin and uncle.

Mary Lennox will be played by Genevieve Demanett, a student at Concordia Middle School.

CCCC musical going virtual

For the third year, the state of Kansas has expanded its capability to respond to wildland fires, thanks to a partnership between the Kansas National Guard and the Kansas Forest Service.

Together, the agencies conducted the Wildland Firefighting Red Card Certification Course, certifying additional Guardsmen across the state to respond to wildland fires, at the Great Plains Joint Training Center, Salina, Sept. 14-18.

Lt. Col. Larry Leupold, director of military support for the Kansas National Guard, said the need for increased wildland firefighting capability stemmed out of the major wildland fires that occurred in the 2016-2017 season.

“The Starbuck fire and the Anderson Creek fire burned thousands of acres,” Leupold said. “At that point, we realized we needed to have more state level capabilities and resources.”

When we get some of these really big fires, we need a lot more resources.”<figure>

 </figure>For students working toward their first-time Red Card certification, the training consisted of four days of classroom training and one day of field training. The field training was comprised of three stations teaching students about fire engines, hose lays, pumps, water sources, digging lines and setting up dip tanks. The day culminated in conducting a controlled burn.“Fire is an important part of the natural resource management,” Carlson said. “A lot of people think fire is a bad thing, but in order to keep the grass landscape stable and healthy, prescribed burns are needed.”Not all students were first time attendees; some students in the course were taking their annual recertification, which consisted of only one day of refresher training. All students who successfully complete their respective certification or recertification training are firefighter level II certified and can be called to respond to wildland fires throughout the state of Kansas.Students also had the option to try to pass the Pack Test – a three-mile hike carrying 45 pounds, which must be completed in under 45 minutes. Those who pass the Pack Test are eligible to respond to wildland fire emergencies outside the state of Kansas.“We could have a disaster in any part of the state, sometimes multiple parts of the state at the same time,” Leupold said. “So it gives us the flexibility to be more responsive to the local communities’ needs by having trained Guardsmen throughout the state.”This year’s training certified about 35 new students and recertified about 20 more.<figure>

 </figure>Leupold explained that the goal is to build a force capability of 100 Guardsmen that can support other wildland firefighting entities in statewide efforts at any given time.“When we work together at all levels, from the local level up to the state level, that’s where we do our best work,” Leupold said. “It comes down to how we get the right resources, the right capabilities to the right place at the right time to protect our families across the state. The Kansas Forest Service has been a great partner in helping us prepare for that.”Carlson, a 22-year veteran of the Forest Service, discussed what he liked about instructing the course, and how the partnership benefits the entire state when it comes to emergency preparedness.“Working together, we can get more people more knowledge about doing wildland firefighting,” Carlson said. “Once you start getting into a situation where resources are needed, you know where to find those resources and bring them together.”“This is a special part of who we are as the Kansas National Guard,” Leupold said. “Not only do we have to maintain our readiness to protect our citizens by deploying abroad, but we also start here at home when it comes to disasters. Having the opportunity to come out and train and work with our interagency partners like the Forest Service – whether it’s a winter storm, wildland fire, or a world pandemic – this is what the Guard does.
