The National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, Neb., has issued a frost advisory for counties in our area.

The frost advisory is in effect from 1-9 a.m. Friday for Jewell County and Mitchell County.

Temperatures as low as 32 will result in areas of frost   formation. Frost could kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered, NWS noted.

According to NWS, there is still a fair amount of uncertainty in this temperature forecast. A warm blanket of cloud cover will be possible tonight and if the clouds hold all night then the temperatures will not get as cold. However, if the clouds clear out for a few hours then a frost is likely given the light winds, NWS explained.

As of Wednesday, counties throughout Kansas were exactly three months away from the deadline for spending $400 million in Coronavirus Relief Funding released to counties by the governor’s Office of Recovery.

Saline County has now expended $2.2 million of the $11 million awarded locally. The county continues to work closely with government, educational, non-profit, and business institutions around the community that was awarded funds as part of the local plan submitted to the State on Aug. 14 and approved on Sept. 4. Progress on Saline County’s spending plan can be monitored on our website at <a href="https://www.saline.org/Coronavirus/CRF-Funding">https://www.saline.org/Coronavirus/CRF-Funding</a>.

Additionally, the county is excited to announce that two of our partner organizations, the Salina Area Chamber Foundation and Child Care Aware of Kansas, are opening up grant programs targeting needs for the business and child care communities, respectively. Information about these programs can be found at <a href="https://web.salinakansas.org/wcwebinput/grant-application.aspx">https://web.salinakansas.org/wcwebinput/grant-application.aspx</a> and <a href="https://ks.childcareaware.org/cares/">https://ks.childcareaware.org/cares/</a>.

County staff and our Advisory Committee continue to monitor needs in the community and prepare to respond to unmet needs with any funds that remain available. In addition, the county will be working over the next week to submit the first in a series of required progress reports to the State’s Office of Recovery.

Background: As part of the $2.2 trillion federal stimulus package known as the CARES Act, $150 billion was awarded to states and large local governments. Kansas received $1.25 billion, of which $240+ million went to Johnson and Sedgwick counties based on population. Of the remaining $1.03 billion, the Governor’s Task Force on Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas recommended (and the State Finance Council approved) awarding $400 million to Kansas counties based on their population and their impact from the COVID-19 disease. Saline County was awarded $11,026,434. 

The Saline County Commissioners agreed to accept this funding via resolution and formed a citizen advisory committee to make a recommendation on distribution. The advisory committee received over 100 applications from local entities impacted by the pandemic. Per CARES Act terms, all funds must be spent by Dec. 30, 2020, on an eligible activity; reimbursement of lost revenue to local governments is not eligible for funding.

ABILENE -- Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for a Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on the last Friday of September. 

A total donation of $145 was presented to the City of Abilene to go towards resident city water bills that are behind. 

The day was organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

Do you wish you could save time&nbsp;investigating&nbsp;the memes and questionable news stories filling your social media feeds?&nbsp;Ever wish the person who shared it had fact-checked it&nbsp;before they shared?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fortunately, librarians at K-State Libraries are sharing resources and tools you can use to identify false news stories that run across your feed.

First, it can help to remember that social media was not designed as a news outlet.&nbsp;

"If your feeds have become&nbsp;flooded with content that makes you feel more emotional&nbsp;than informed,&nbsp;you can choose to hide those posts and get your news from legitimate news outlets and research organizations," said Sara K. Kearns, professor and academic services librarian with K-State Libraries.

If you do want to run down the fact-checking road, Kearns recommends that you find out if someone has already done the work for you&nbsp;before you lace up your shoes. The following sites not only investigate the stories, but they also provide you with more information to back up their claims.

How to avoid the fake news trap

Whether he is involved with music or helping others, it's safe to say that Blake Blackim is passionate about what he does.

Earlier this summer, Blackim, president of Midwest Music, was recognized for his efforts when he was named by Ingram's to the <a href="https://ingrams.com/article/50-kansas-you-should-know-the-class-of-2020/">2020 class of "50 Kansans You Should Know."</a>

According to the Ingram's article, the people in the class of 2020 were selected "for their over-sized contributions to business success, civic engagement, philanthropic zeal and shared interest in moving their communities forward, and by extension, advancing the interests of an entire state."

The class includes a rich mix of Kansans, from "business executives, athletes, artists, educators and scholars, hailing from the ranks of health care, real estate, agriculture, banking, manufacturing, hospitality and more," the story noted.

Blackim, it would seem, is a good fit for this group.

Not only is he a long-time supporter of music education through Midwest Music, serving both individuals and schools, but he also makes music himself as a part of the local band, the Sunset Sinners, and before that with the band Rock Garden.

"That, honestly, to me is my favorite, because we're so passionate about supporting military, veterans, first responders and so on," Blackim said.

He also has started working with the Connor's Cuddles Foundation, a Belleville organization that makes and distributes blankets to children's hospitals and individual children battling health issues.

Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC) today revealed a new brand that the organization says was designed to reflect and project its mission, vision, and values.

At the core of the new brand is a logo -- a medical cross -- a recognizable symbol of the healthcare field and healing, SFHC noted in a news release. In the background of the cross, the negative space forms the subtle curves of an "S." 

"This serves as an obvious allusion to Salina, Saline County, and our clinic's name, Salina Family Healthcare Center.  The 'S' is also drawn to suggest an infinity symbol turned 90 degrees, which represents our enduring commitment to the community and every individual in it," SFHC explained.

"Our brand and logo were created very intentionally. The colors. The font. The logo shape, including the negative space. This intentionality reflects how we serve our patients," said Dr. Robert Kraft, CEO/CMO. "Everything we do arises purposefully from our core values with excellence, patient-centeredness, and access as just a few of those values that drive our care."

"A new logo is the most obvious outward expression of our new brand. The brand, however, includes a new look and feel that extends beyond the logo," Kraft continued. "This reflects our commitment to the community to be different – better – than we were in the past.  Our brand is not a new sticker on an old product. COVID-19 testing continues to be a priority statewide and in our local community. Testing for COVID-19, in most cases, is reserved for those that are experiencing symptoms or are considered high-risk and have been a close contact with another positive case. Salina Regional Health Center reporting that they have 6 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital, the COVID19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized. Hospice of Salina pumpkin sale set for Saturday

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported two additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 270.

Following is the information for the most recent cases as provided by the health department.

●Positive case No. 269 is a symptomatic male in his 60s with known exposure.

●Positive case No. 270 is a symptomatic male in his 90s with unknown exposure.

Of the 270 confirmed cases, 254 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines and four active cases are hospitalized, according to the health department.

The advisory was issued because of water system maintenance, resulting in a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Wakefield indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

KDHE: Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Wakefield

WICHITA – A second defendant pleaded guilty Wednesday to an armed robbery at a convenience store in Newton, Stephen McAllister said.

Rico Montes, 28, Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of robbery. In his plea, Montes admitted he and co-defendant&nbsp;Jorge Correa, 25, Wichita, robbed the EZ Trip at 100 S. Main in Newton, Kan., while another man waited in the car. Montes and Correa were armed when they entered the store.

Montes is set for sentencing Dec. 16. He could face a penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

Correa pleaded guilty last week and is set for sentencing Dec. 8. He admitted firing several shots during the robbery. No one was injured. A third defendant,&nbsp;Jeremiah Urias, 18, Wichita, who is alleged to have driven the&nbsp;getaway car, is set for a change of plea hearing Oct. 13.

Jeremiah Urias, 18;&nbsp;Rico Montes, 27, and&nbsp;Jorge Correa, 25, all of Wichita,&nbsp; were charged with committing a robbery Feb. 4 at EZ Trip, 100 S. Main in Newton.

A criminal complaint filed in the case alleges two robbers entered the store before 6 a.m. One of the robbers in a red hoodie pointed a handgun at a clerk and demanded money, which the clerk gave him. Then a second robber carrying a military style rifle demanded more money. While waiting for the money, the second robber walked around the store firing shots into the ceiling and into an ATM.

Investigators used surveillance footage to identify a license tag number of the getaway vehicle. After a high speed pursuit, the Kansas Highway Patrol arrested the three defendants. Urias was driving. Montes was wearing a red hoodie and sitting in the front passenger seat. Correa was sitting in the back seat with a rifle.

If convicted, the defendants could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000

According to an analysis on behalf of the company, the Grain Belt Express will create up to 22,525 jobs supported over the three-year construction period, 968 full-time, permanent operations jobs, and $8 billion of total, long-term economic investment in Kansas. Additionally, the project will save up to $7 billion in electricity costs for Kansas and Missouri consumers through 2045, and produce $3.7 billion in economic output during construction and $235 million in annual economic output once operations begin.

Comfort's Salute to Service honors Brent Rupert

The idea started in 2010, after Randy Phillips visited Randy Jackson in his hospital room. Talking with Jackson brought back memories of Wichita State University football and the events that brought them together.

The visit also highlighted lost memories from the 1970 plane crash in Colorado.

“I had just left Randy Jackson’s hospital room as he was passing away and realized, at that time, I couldn’t recall all the survivors’ names,” Phillips said. “I wanted to finish the whole story.”

The story, told for years by the Memorial ’70 monument near the 18th Street and Hillside entrance to campus, now feels complete. A new sculpture recognizes the survivors of the crash. The names of teammates who landed safely in Utah that day are a fitting addition to the existing upright Memorial ’70 monument.

“One of the main reasons we did what we did was so the future generations would know that there were survivors,” Phillips said, “and how their lives were impacted, especially since they lived when so many didn’t. Most, if not all, suffered greatly in silence.”

The desire to honor teammates by telling the story of the crash motivated Phillips, as it has so many connected to the crash on Oct. 2, 1970&nbsp;near Silver Plume, Colorado. The Memorial ’70 monument honors the 31 people – 14 student-athletes, 14 staff and boosters, and three crew members –&nbsp;who died as a result. The team was headed to Utah State for a game the next day.

Jackson, who died in July 2010 of pancreatic cancer, was one of the nine survivors of the crash.

The story includes those who carried on without their teammates. They keep their memory alive by telling the story, visiting the crash site on Mount Trelease and helping each other heal through the survivor’s guilt and pain.

Phillips and Bill Moore, a freshman on the 1970 team, started a fund-raising drive to add to the Memorial ’70 monument. Phillips transferred to Wichita State in 1971 to play quarterback and help the program rebuild.

“Randy came to me and said we ought to be doing something for these guys,” Moore said. “It’s important that we recognize (the survivors), particularly, because it’s been tough on them.”

Funded by around $25,000 in private donations, the additions recognize the burdens carried by the survivors and their teammates.

The new monument is designed in the shape of the fuselage near the wing, the area of the plane that broke open and allowed room for some people to&nbsp;escape. The monument features the names of the eight Shockers who survived the crash of the "Gold plane" (a pilot also survived).

The names of the members of the team who flew on the "Black plane" complete the upright monument that signifies the plane that landed safely in Logan, Utah.

“This is simple, and it tells the story,” Moore said.

The monument that lists the 31 names of those who died is unchanged. Moore contacted many of the families of the deceased to make sure they approved of the additions.

“We really wanted to be respectful of what this is about,” Phillips said.

Phillips, a partner at the Wichita architectural firm of Spangenberg Phillips Tice, designed the sculpture that features the survivors, with help from graphic designer Jason Ridder. Phillips and Moore worked with Ann Marie Siegwarth, director of development for the WSU Foundation, on the approval and details of installation. Updated landscaping around Memorial ’70 is also part of the new look.

“It’s been a great team effort,” Phillips said. “The university has been a wonderful partner to us, and much of that support is the direct result of Ann Marie Siegwarth’s unfailing support and promise to keep this a simple team effort.”&nbsp;

In an annual ceremony of remembrance, a wreath is placed at Wichita State's Memorial '70 at 9 a.m. each Oct. 2. The brief ceremony honors WSU football players, administrators and supporters who died in a plane crash October 2, 1970.
