A worker lost his hand in an accident in the south industrial area Sunday morning.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan reported this morning that first responders were sent to the Signify lighting production facility, 3861 South Old 81 (South Ninth Street), at 7:52 a.m. Sunday for the report of an industrial accident.

A 63-year-old employee was working with a drill press when his sleeve got caught and his hand was severed, Soldan explained. The man was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, he added.

Two people transported to SRHC; teen cited for inattentive driving

Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident Saturday morning west of Salina.

A white 2015 Chevrolet Colorado pickup driven by Gary Erickson, 45, of Salina, was eastbound on Kansas Highway 140 approximately 0.3 of a mile east of Powers Road at 11 a.m. Saturday when it crossed the center line and went into the north ditch, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The pickup came to rest after striking a drainage culvert, he said. According to Soldan, Erickson was believed to have fallen asleep at the time of the accident.

Erickson suffered cuts to his arms and face, but declined treatment, Soldan said. A passenger in the pickup, Kristina Costello, 34, of Abilene, complained of back pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, he said.

The accident caused items in the back of the pickup, including a red Jet Ski, to fall out, Soldan said. The pickup received undercarriage damage and had to be towed from the scene, he added.

A bronze-colored Chevrolet Camaro SS that was reported stolen last week was located in a field south of Brookville Friday morning.

Saline County Sheriff's deputies were sent to a field near the intersection of Crittendon Road and West Farrelly Road at approximately 9 a.m. Friday for the report of an abandoned vehicle, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

A deer hunter discovered the car and told deputies that the car had not been there the night before, Soldan said.

The car, valued at $30,000, was reported stolen from a warehouse in the 400 block of North Fifth Street in Salina sometime between Sept. 26-28, according to a report from Crimestoppers of Salina/Saline County.

Soldan said the car was returned to its owner, who had to tow it back to Salina. The owner said he suspected the car had engine damage because of the large amount of oil on the roadway and on the car, Soldan added.

NWS: Expect a warm up in the first part of the week

Dictionaries are history books, not law books. And these months of school disruption are setting records for the invention of new educational terms and modifying old terms.

“Breakout rooms” were separate rooms or partitioned spaces within a single large classroom that provided for smaller groups of students, often to differentiate instruction for different ability levels. Now these may be extra rooms to provide spacing. Or in cyberspace, it is a reduction in students a teacher must “interact” with during an online lesson since the regular class-size array of online participants causes many students to feel they are ignored.

The “distributed campus” is a more complicated university level concept. It involves not only the spreading out of students across a university to prevent extended periods of close contact, but also includes timing of classes, timing of transport, offsetting of meal times, distancing of seats and desks, etc.

“Crisis learning” is education that takes place during an external crisis (not a student’s personal family crisis). This term was resurrected during this 2020 pandemic to lower expectations that online or remote learning would be equivalent to face-to-face learning and is also called “emergency remote learning.” It has not prevented the tech-industrial complex from lying that their digital devices provide even better education than face-to-face instruction.

“Gating criteria” are the series of conditions that need to be met for students to enter public school buildings and return to face-to-face teaching. Such criteria are generally developed by medical experts.

“Learning hubs” are an invention this pandemic. Despite distribution of digital equipment, there are homeless K-12 students living in a car or couch-surfing who cannot connect, as well as a substantial portion of students with equipment who just never connect. The attempt to get them to cluster in learning hubs is a variation on learning pods that are usually home-based. So far, it is not very successful.

“Discovery duffels” are being used in Colorado districts. It provides K-5 students with bags filled with enrichment supplies, STEM and other learning materials. Teachers across subjects refill the bags with supplies to provide students hands-on activities.

“Skip-year growth” is the comparison of student achievement scores across two years to provide an accurate assessment of students' academic progress, and to measure how school closures affected student progress.

“Slide reversal” is the attempt to make-up learning loss that always occurred during summer vacation but now attempts to recover the lost class time due to the pandemic.

“High-dosage tutoring” is one-on-one tutoring beyond what is normally provided. This is hyped as a method to make up the loss of learning during the pandemic. It is also considered “personalized learning” because a tutor can address just those shortfalls in learning specific to a student. It is also considered a form of Socratic learning, although the school lessons are standardized and Socratic learning is free form and pursues open questioning.

“Social disconnect” is the reduced teacher-student interaction that occurs in distance learning, primarily used to describe the ineffectiveness of online methodology during the pandemic.

“Covid-19 safety influencers” are college students hired to encourage classmates to wear masks and follow rules against off-campus partying. This can also occur in businesses and government agencies. &nbsp;

“Datacasting” is a proposed new use of television signals to transmit a one-way, encrypted signal to deliver lessons without a broadband internet connection. It requires an antennae and connected device.

For teaching evaluation, teachers were sometimes videotaped in class so they could see their teaching. I preferred to watch students’ facial reactions for effective teaching. Now with teachers online, “video coaching” uses the videos of teachers and student to judge teaching effectiveness. However, the resolution is so low that it is not possible to see eye pupil dilation or most other signs of student understanding.

All of the above is considered irrelevant and unneeded to those suffering “pandemic denial,” the continued refusal of parents or school board members to take this pandemic seriously and take reasonable and science-based precautions to minimize contagion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN — Research at Kansas State University is making progress on keeping both humans and animals safe from tick-borne diseases. <a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/faculty-staff/faculty/ganta-r/" target="_blank">Roman Ganta</a>, professor and director of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/research/cevbd/index.html" target="_blank">Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Diseases</a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>, and his team of researchers received two patents on technology to develop vaccine candidates against tick-borne&nbsp;Ehrlichia&nbsp;and Anaplasma&nbsp;infections. Ehrlichia species pathogens transmitted by ticks can lead to ehrlichiosis, the general name for illness caused by the bacteria. Human monocytic ehrlichiosis, caused by E. chaffeensis, can lead to life-threatening illness and is associated with significant morbidity, especially in children, the elderly and people with compromised immunity. Before the team's efforts, the only option for controlling E. chaffeensis infections and other related pathogens of Ehrlichia and Anaplasma in humans and dogs was antibiotic treatment. This showed a clear need for preventative vaccines. "In our prior studies, we created several mutations in the tick-borne rickettsial pathogen, E. chaffeensis, which is responsible for causing ehrlichiosis disease in people and dogs," Ganta said. "Our team was the first to develop methods to generate gene mutations in obligate rickettsial bacteria belonging to the Ehrlichia species." Gene mutations cause the inactivation of proteins in bacteria, which can render the bacteria incapable of causing disease. This knowledge led to the creation of the vaccines since mutated bacteria are ideal for inducing enough immunity to protect against infection. "Because our mutagenesis and vaccine development methods are broadly applicable to other tick-borne pathogens causing diseases in dogs, cattle and humans, K-State filed the patents that cover our inventions for developing vaccine candidates against tick-borne infections of bacterial pathogens belonging to the Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species,” Ganta said. The patent filings have helped Ganta generate additional support from the National Institutes of Health to expand the research on vaccine development to several related pathogens impacting human and animal health.&nbsp;

WICHITA – October is Car Care Month and AAA Kansas is advising drivers to give their vehicles some extra attention this year. 

As a result of earlier COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, an increase of people working from home and virtual learning, motorists are logging far fewer miles and vehicles are sitting idle for longer periods of time. October is the perfect time to ensure vehicles are road-ready for the winter ahead.

During the summer of 2020 AAA Kansas emergency roadside rescue crews responded to nearly 5,000 calls for battery service, an increase of 5.4% compared to the summer of 2019 as a result of the stay-at-home orders issued in the spring.&nbsp;

“Proper maintenance can extend the life of your vehicle and help prevent costly repairs,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Even when your car isn’t being used, the electronic systems still tap the battery, which can affect its performance when you try to start it.”

The time is now to make sure your vehicle is winter ready. The weather is mild, and there is plenty of time to deal with the potentially costly repairs before winter weather sets in.

Be on the lookout for the following battery warning signs:

How to determine the age of your battery:

The average lifespan of a vehicle battery is three to five years, so if your battery falls within that age range, it may be time to consider replacing it.

To ensure your vehicle is properly maintained, AAA Kansas recommends that motorists:

●Read the maintenance requirements set by your car’s manufacturer in the owner’s manual. There is no longer a “standard” maintenance schedule for vehicle services – including brake fluid. Each automaker has different requirements, making your owner’s manual the most accurate resource.

●Inspect brakes as recommended in your owner’s manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, pulling, noises while braking or longer stopping distance. Correct minor brake problems promptly. Check your owner’s manual to see if the brake fluid should be changed at a specific interval. If no interval is specified for brake fluid service, AAA suggests flushing the system every two years or anytime the brake system is serviced.

●Follow the recommendations of in-vehicle maintenance reminders, as they have the best information to determine maintenance needs for your vehicle because they account for how you actually drive. However, many reminder systems do not specifically cover maintenance operations that need to be performed on a time or mileage basis – such as brake fluid and coolant flushes or timing-belt replacement.

●Work with a local repair shop you trust - Every car requires routine maintenance and repair. The best time to find a mechanic or auto repair shop is before you need one. Start by asking friends and family for recommendations of repair shops and mechanics. Visit&nbsp;<a href="http://AAA.com">AAA.com</a>&nbsp;to find nearby AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities.

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, take your vehicle to your top candidate shop for routine maintenance. While there, talk with the employees and take a look at the facility and consider the following questions:

●Does the facility have up-to-date equipment?

●Does the shop offer a nationwide warranty on parts and labor?

●Are customer areas clean, comfortable and well organized?

When having your car serviced, follow the factory recommended maintenance schedule to avoid under- or over-maintaining your vehicle.&nbsp; Oil changes, tire rotations, changing transmission fluid, and replacing an air filter are the types of routine maintenance recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. The maintenance schedule for these services and more can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual.

It’s burned into the plastic of the battery at the factory and can usually be found around or near the rim.&nbsp;</li><li>Reading a date code-The date code will usually start with a letter and a number. The letter refers to the month, e.g., January is A, February is B…etc. (The system skips the letter “I” because it can look like a “1”) The number after the letter refers to the year it was manufactured. A battery with the code “D8” would have been manufactured in April of 2018.&nbsp;</li>

Kelly, Invenergy outline economic jolt of electric transmission project

Sweet corn. It’s one of the joys of summer. Freshly picked sweet corn, cooked and served with some butter and salt, can be a summertime treat. When there happens to be extra sweet corn, it also can be a benefit when it is donated for families facing food insecurity.&nbsp;

Tonya Martisko and Julie Ball are sisters and owners and operators of Gaeddert Farms Sweet Corn, based on the third-generation family farm near Buhler.&nbsp;

Gaeddert Farms, one of the state’s leading vendors of sweet corn, has been generous to many families in need. This generosity caused the company to be recognized as an Ag Hero by the Kansas Department of Agriculture during the 2020 Ag Growth Summit.&nbsp;

“We’ve been doing this since grade school,” Tonya said with a smile. She and Julie are daughters of Leon and Ruth Gaeddert. The Gaedderts had a family garden which included sweet corn.&nbsp;

“When we had extra, we would take it to our grandparents’ house in Buhler and sell it from the front yard,” Tonya said. “We were excited if we sold five dozen in one day.”&nbsp;

The Gaedderts started selling sweet corn direct from the farm and at farmers’ markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tonya and Julie grew up, married, started families and expanded the sweet corn business. In 1996, the Gaedderts opened a retail stand location in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

“About 2000, we really made a commitment to grow the business,” Tonya said. Today, they sell at farmers’ markets in Hutchinson and Wichita, plus selling from their distinctive green-and-gold canopies at their seasonal retail stands in Hutchinson, McPherson, Newton, Andover, Derby, Salina and five in Wichita.&nbsp;

That’s a lot of sweet corn. It requires a lot of work and management. The Gaedderts typically begin planting sweet corn in early April. From then on, multiple plantings are staggered to get fresh sweet corn for six to eight weeks.&nbsp;

The Gaeddert Farms website says: “Planning for that perfect timing can be difficult to do.&nbsp;So many factors come into consideration, most of which we have no control over, such as Kansas weather.&nbsp;There have been years when some of our crop has been hailed out, drowned out, frozen out and even sustained damage from high winds. So goes the life of a farmer.”&nbsp;

Freshness and quality are emphasized by the Gaedderts. “We start picking corn at three in the morning and sell that corn on the same day,” Tonya said. Estimating consumer demand can be tricky.&nbsp;

“Some days we sell out and some days we don’t,” Tonya said. “If there’s any extra, we hate to throw it away.”&nbsp;

Yet, fresh produce is one of the most needed items for people who have underlying health issues … Gaeddert Farms has stepped up tremendously this year to provide missing meals for families in need.”&nbsp;

The Gaeddert family also has ventured into agritourism. For a number of years, they offered a corn maze. In 2018, they opened their sunflower fields for visitors. Now they conduct an annual Sunflower Festival, a Craft and Art Market with more than 40 vendors, and even a 5K and one-mile trail run through their 16-acre sunflower field.&nbsp;

All this is located on the farm near the rural community of Buhler, population 1,327 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

When there happens to be extra sweet corn, it also can be a benefit when it is donated for families facing food insecurity.&nbsp;Tonya Martisko and Julie Ball are sisters and owners and operators of Gaeddert Farms Sweet Corn, based on the third-generation family farm near Buhler.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Gaeddert Farms, one of the state’s leading vendors of sweet corn, has been generous to many families in need. This generosity caused the company to be recognized as an Ag Hero by the Kansas Department of Agriculture during the 2020 Ag Growth Summit.&nbsp;“We’ve been doing this since grade school,” Tonya said with a smile. She and Julie are daughters of Leon and Ruth Gaeddert. The Gaedderts had a family garden which included sweet corn.&nbsp;“When we had extra, we would take it to our grandparents’ house in Buhler and sell it from the front yard,” Tonya said. “We were excited if we sold five dozen in one day.”&nbsp;The Gaedderts started selling sweet corn direct from the farm and at farmers’ markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tonya and Julie grew up, married, started families and expanded the sweet corn business. In 1996, the Gaedderts opened a retail stand location in Hutchinson.&nbsp;“About 2000, we really made a commitment to grow the business,” Tonya said. Today, they sell at farmers’ markets in Hutchinson and Wichita, plus selling from their distinctive green-and-gold canopies at their seasonal retail stands in Hutchinson, McPherson, Newton, Andover, Derby, Salina and five in Wichita.&nbsp;That’s a lot of sweet corn. It requires a lot of work and management. The Gaedderts typically begin planting sweet corn in early April. From then on, multiple plantings are staggered to get fresh sweet corn for six to eight weeks.&nbsp;The Gaeddert Farms website says: “Planning for that perfect timing can be difficult to do.&nbsp;So many factors come into consideration, most of which we have no control over, such as Kansas weather.&nbsp;There have been years when some of our crop has been hailed out, drowned out, frozen out and even sustained damage from high winds. So goes the life of a farmer.”&nbsp;Freshness and quality are emphasized by the Gaedderts. “We start picking corn at three in the morning and sell that corn on the same day,” Tonya said. MANHATTAN -- Outdoor activities are almost limitless, and the cycles of nature provide a revolving door, constantly changing to create new and exciting opportunities throughout the year.&nbsp;

Dave Bruton, utilization and marketing forester with the Kansas Forest Service, says one of those opportunities is harvesting black walnut seed. &nbsp;

“Black walnut trees are commonly found throughout Kansas communities and woodlands, particularly in the eastern half of Kansas,” Bruton said. “They are great for personal use for making candies, breads, ice cream and holiday treats – but they also present an opportunity to make a little extra money.”&nbsp;

But Bruton understands that collecting black walnut seeds can be messy and hard work.&nbsp;

The juice found in the hull of walnuts stains hands. Stooping to collect nuts from the ground can also cause back stress. Bruton suggests using special tools designed to aid in harvesting black walnut.&nbsp;

Bruton suggests using special tools designed to aid in harvesting black walnut.&nbsp;“Two such products are the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nutwizard.com/" target="_blank">Nut Wizard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://baganut.com/" target="_blank">Bag-A-Nut</a>,” he said. “Both work by rolling the respective equipment over the tops of the nuts scattered across the landscape so the tool can pick up the seed.”&nbsp;Bruton said those products work most effectively in areas that are clear of sticks and debris, and where the vegetation is relatively short. While these and other products can readily be found online, they are also becoming more common in local hardware and other outdoor supply stores.&nbsp;“If you gather more black walnuts than you want or need for your personal use, there is an opportunity to sell the excess,” Bruton said.&nbsp;Bruton said that a Stockton, Missouri-based company -- Hammons Products Co. -- works with individuals across Kansas and ten other states, where black walnut trees are native, to establish hulling and buying stations.&nbsp;This year, eight such stations are scattered across eastern Kansas. A map of the buying locations can be found on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasforests.org/forest_products/nutsandspecialtyproducts.html%20and" target="_blank">Kansas Forest Service website</a>&nbsp;under the tab, "Black Walnut Hulling Stations in Kansas."&nbsp;Bruton said the buying season runs from Oct. 1 to Nov. 2 with the price set at 0.16 per hulled pound. Individuals are not responsible for hulling, he said; that is performed at the buying station with equipment specially designed to quickly and efficiently handle large quantities of nuts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“If you are looking for opportunities to get yourself or kids outside, consider gathering black walnuts and visiting a buying station near you,” Bruton said.&nbsp;
