Curt Glaser&nbsp;is executive vice president &amp; chief

with the bank for 28 years. “I feel honored to be able to represent and be a
voice for our customers and stockholders,” said Glaser. “One of the most
rewarding aspects of my job is being able to help our customers and communities
achieve their financial goals.”

Angie Eilrich&nbsp;is executive vice president and chief operations officer
at First Bank Kansas and has been with the bank for nearly 40 years. “Being
elected to the board is a privilege that comes with much responsibility. A
position on the board assures that I have a voice in what is best for our bank,
our customers, and our employees,” said Eilrich. “I absolutely love my job and
the people I work with. It’s exciting to be part of such a successful team that
is dedicated to their communities and each other.”

Brian Boyer was recently promoted to president and CEO of Advantage Trust
Company. “Having been part of the First Bank Kansas family, as an employee of
Advantage Trust Company, for more than 22 years, I am honored and excited to
have been elected to the First Bank Kansas Board of Directors,” said Boyer.
“It’s all about building relationships and making a difference in our clients’

Bill Mahanay&nbsp;has been with First Bank Kansas for six years and was
promoted to senior vice president/ag and commercial loan officer. “First Bank

leadership team chose to recognize me in this way,” said Mahanay.

Cindy Rempe
has been promoted to senior vice president of commercial services. “I enjoy

Katie Schneider&nbsp;has been promoted to senior vice president of operations

Mindi Davidson&nbsp;has been promoted to
senior vice president of human resources. “Receiving this promotion

years of service to First Bank Kansas are valued and appreciated,” said
Davidson. “I love helping the bank retain and find people with the right skills
and talent to be on our team.”

Jaci Latham&nbsp;has been promoted to vice president of loan
administration. “I am grateful for the confidence the management team has in me

16 years with First Bank Kansas, Latham continues to be passionate about the
success of the bank, her team, and her co-workers.

Jessica Haines&nbsp;has been promoted to

I don’t like admitting this, but I absolutely hate my job. Last year I almost cashed out part of my 401(k) to start my own business or open a franchise, and doing something like this is still on my mind. Considering how I feel, do you think this would be a good idea?

But you just mentioned starting your own business in same breath with opening some sort of franchise. That tells me you don’t really know what you want to do.

Have you ever heard someone say they’re “going all in”? When you’re playing cards, that means you’re about to bet everything on a single hand. But here’s the deal, it’s never smart to go all in when it comes to small business. That’s a good way to turn a dream into a nightmare.

I’m urging you to really think about this before you take action. You didn’t mention anything about your financial situation, other than you have a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/smartvestor/investment-calculator?snid=tools.investingcalc" target="_blank">401(k)</a>. That’s a good thing, but if it’s all you have—and you don’t have any other savings set aside—you could be in real trouble. TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) Foundation donated $683,022.43 to 212 organizations during 2020, according to Marlou Wegener, chief operating officer of the BCBSKS Foundation. 

The dollars provided funding for a variety of programs focused on improving the health and well-being of Kansans, which is the overarching goal of the BCBSKS Foundation.

"The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation is proud to provide funding to organizations that are making a difference in the lives of Kansans," Wegener said. "Even throughout this pandemic, these organizations worked hard to continue providing services for our neighbors in need."

The BCBSKS Foundation was incorporated in 2005 to promote the good health of Kansans who live in its 103-county service area (all Kansas counties except Johnson and Wyandotte). Through its giving, the BCBSKS Foundation focuses on key health issues that impact the lives of many Kansans. The dollars were given to the 212 organizations to support a variety of programs and initiatives that promote health improvement, community health access and/or health education, healthy behaviors, prevention initiatives or direct health services to the uninsured.

“With support from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation, Child Care Aware of Kansas was able to meet emerging COVID-19 needs of 500 Kansas family child care programs by providing kits with curriculum and other materials to support behavioral health for children,” Kelly Davydov, executive director, Child Care Aware of Kansas, said.&nbsp;“The kits supported child care programs in implementing stricter cleaning regimens, addressing changing routines and, in some cases, navigating family stress for the young children in their care.”

Receiving major grants from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation in 2020 were:

Child Care Aware of Kansas –&nbsp;The organization received $50,000 to support children’s behavioral health curriculum for use by child care providers in 103 counties.

American Red Cross –&nbsp;Received $30,000 to provide emergency and disaster relief and COVID-19 response services in 103 counties in Kansas.

Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation –&nbsp;This foundation received $30,000 for the 2020 Kansas Mission of Mercy free dental clinic.

St. Francis Ministries –&nbsp;Received $25,000 to support telehealth services to clients with behavioral health needs.

Kansas CASA Association –&nbsp;Received $20,771 to provide local CASA programs with a health-related database for use in working with clients.

A total of $98,000 was given to educational institutions for scholarships for Bachelor of Science in nursing students, as well as students seeking health-related degrees and certificates.

Community centers that provide services for the uninsured and underinsured shared $86,000 in funding to assist with health services for their patients.

Healthy Habits for Life, a school grant program from the Foundation, distributed $89,841.43 to 81 public and private schools (K-12) for funding of healthy initiatives for students.

United Way organizations in Topeka, Salina, Wichita, and Hutchinson received a combined $70,000 to accompany employee-giving campaigns.

McPherson County reports 33 new cases of COVID-19

Saline County has made some headway on the COVID-19 vaccination front.

According to Thursday's Vax Facts, more than 10 percent of the eligible population in Saline County has been vaccinated, with approximately 4,700 individuals having received their first or both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

"Further by the end of next week we expect to meet or exceed our first Phase 2 milestone of having vaccinated more than 30 percent of our most vulnerable population – our senior citizens," the Saline County Health Department noted.

Persons age 65 or older, and anyone in Phase 1 who has yet to be vaccinated are currently eligible to be vaccinated.

Saline County: More than 10 percent of those eligible are vaccinated

Groundhog Day came and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, meaning there are six more weeks of winter headed our way. To underscore Phil's prediction, the state's weather forecasts indicate a week of extreme winter temperatures, beginning Saturday. Temperatures for much of next week will range from the teens and mid-20s to low 30s across the state with overnight temperatures dropping to single digits. "I know we're all tired of staying indoors because of the coronavirus, but with temperatures like these, it's a good idea to stay inside as much as possible and only go out if you really need to," said Angee Morgan, deputy director, Kansas Division of Emergency Management. "If you have to work outside, dress warm, don't work alone and take frequent warming breaks. Now would be a good time to check your home and auto emergency kits to make sure they are up-to-date." "As Kansans we always do a good job of checking on our neighbors," said Governor Laura Kelly. "During bitter temperatures it is especially important to check on our elderly neighbors and family members who may be shut in either with a phone call or a visit.&nbsp; If you go to their home make sure and wear a mask and practice social distancing." Take some time before the temperature drops to ensure you are ready for the worst and have a plan in place.&nbsp; Assemble an emergency kit for your home that includes a battery-operated radio, a flashlight and extra batteries, extra blankets and warm clothing, food that you can open and prepare easily and plenty of clean drinking water (at least one gallon per person per day), in case water supply lines are compromised. Before you travel make sure your car or vehicle has at least a half a tank of gas during extreme cold situations so that you can stay warm if you become stranded.&nbsp; Keep an emergency supply kit in your car with these automobile extras: jumper cables, flares or reflective triangle, ice scraper, car cell phone charger, blanket, map, cat litter or sand (for better tire traction). As temperatures drop, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls of your home and turn faucets to a slow drip to help prevent pipes from freezing. Place rolled-up towels or blankets around drafty windows and doors to help keep the cold air outside and the warm air inside. If you must use portable space heaters to warm your home, check that they have been tested and certified to the latest safety standards. Keep heat sources at least three feet from combustible items, like papers, blankets and curtains. Never leave a fireplace or portable heater unattended; turn off heaters and extinguish flames when you leave the room or go to bed. Never use appliances that weren't designed to heat your home, such as cooking stoves and ovens, for that purpose. Have a plan for a safe, warm place to go, and a way to get there, if it becomes unsafe to stay in your home. Check on older loved ones and neighbors to ensure they are safe and have the means to stay that way. On very cold days, minimize your exposure to the outdoors if possible. If you must go outside make sure you are monitoring yourself for signs of frostbite as well as hypothermia. Dress in layers. Trapped air between loose fitting clothing helps to keep you insulated. Stay covered. Wear mittens or gloves, and wear a hat. At least half of your body heat is lost if your head is uncovered. Stay dry. Wet clothing results in much faster heat loss from your body. Wear waterproof insulated boots. Frostbite causes loss of feeling and color around the face, fingers, and toes. Signs of frostbite are numbness, white or grayish-yellow skin, and firm or waxy skin. If you are exhibiting signs of frostbite go to a warm room, soak in warm water. Use body heat to warm yourself and do not massage or use a heating pad. Hypothermia is an unusually low body temperature. A temperature below 95 degrees is an emergency. Signs of hypothermia are shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If you are exhibiting signs of hypothermia go to a warm room. Warm the center of the body first-chest, neck, head, and groin. Keep dry and wrapped up in warm blankets, including the head and neck. Stay informed. Have a portable NOAA weather radio nearby to keep you up-to-date with the latest forecasts and warnings. Use wind chill temperatures to guide you in dressing properly for the outdoors. Pet safety ●Know the limits. Just like people, pets' cold tolerance can vary from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. Be aware of your pet's tolerance for cold weather, and adjust accordingly.

●Stay inside. Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather.

●Make some noise. A warm vehicle engine can be an appealing heat source for outdoor and feral cats, but it's deadly. Check underneath your car, bang on the hood, and honk the horn before starting the engine to encourage feline hitchhikers to abandon their roost under the hood.

●Check the paws. Check your dog's paws frequently for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked paw pads or bleeding.

●Play dress-up. If your dog has a short coat or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or dog coat.

●Wipe down. During walks, your dog's feet, legs and belly may pick up deicers, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic. When you get back inside, wipe down (or wash) your pet's feet, legs and belly to remove these chemicals and reduce the risk that your dog will be poisoned after (s)he licks them off of his/her feet or fur. Consider using pet-safe deicers on your property to protect your pets and the others in your neighborhood.

●Stay home. Hot cars are a known threat to pets, but cold cars also pose significant risk to your pet's health. You're already familiar with how a car can rapidly cool down in cold weather; it becomes like a refrigerator, and can rapidly chill your pet. Pets that are young, old, ill, or thin are particularly susceptible to cold environments and should never be left in cold cars. Limit car travel to only that which is necessary, and don't leave your pet unattended in the vehicle.

●Prevent poisoning. Clean up any antifreeze spills quickly, as even small amounts of antifreeze can be deadly.

●Protect family. Odds are your pet will be spending more time inside during the winter, so it's a good time to make sure your house is properly pet-proofed.

●Avoid ice. When walking your dog, stay away from frozen ponds, lakes and other water. You don't know if the ice will support your dog's weight, and if your dog breaks through the ice it could be deadly.

●Provide shelter. We don't recommend keeping any pet outside for long periods of time, but if you are unable to keep your dog inside during cold weather, provide him/her with a warm, solid shelter against wind. Make sure that they have unlimited access to fresh, non-frozen water (by changing the water frequently or using a pet-safe, heated water bowl). The floor of the shelter should be off of the ground (to minimize heat loss into the ground) and the bedding should be thick, dry and changed regularly to provide a warm, dry environment. The door to the shelter should be positioned away from prevailing winds. Space heaters and heat lamps should be avoided because of the risk of burns or fire. Heated pet mats should also be used with caution because they are still capable of causing burns. Livestock, including horses, have their own unique considerations and needs when the weather gets colder.

●Provide appropriate shelter from the elements. Livestock can generally tolerate cold temperatures, but wind, rain, or snow will require a greater expenditure of calories. With that in mind, be sure they have a way to get out of the elements, especially the wind. To underscore Phil's prediction, the state's weather forecasts indicate a week of extreme winter temperatures, beginning Saturday. Temperatures for much of next week will range from the teens and mid-20s to low 30s across the state with overnight temperatures dropping to single digits. "I know we're all tired of staying indoors because of the coronavirus, but with temperatures like these, it's a good idea to stay inside as much as possible and only go out if you really need to," said Angee Morgan, deputy director, Kansas Division of Emergency Management. "If you have to work outside, dress warm, don't work alone and take frequent warming breaks. Now would be a good time to check your home and auto emergency kits to make sure they are up-to-date." "As Kansans we always do a good job of checking on our neighbors," said Governor Laura Kelly. The scholarship, named after Salina rapper/poet Cash Hollistah, will be awarded to a graduating senior in central Kansas who shows merit in the field of community enrichment, as well as poetry, music, or visual art. Students must fulfill academic requirements, and plan to attend an institution of higher education in the fall of 2021. 

The scholarship is available&nbsp;to high school seniors in the following counties: Saline, McPherson, Ottawa, Ellsworth, Marion, Dickinson, and Lincoln.

Cash Hollistah is a national hip-hop recording artist, poet, and philanthropist based in Salina.&nbsp;A passionate advocate for the arts, Hollistah cites a creative writing class he took as a sophomore in high school as the main catalyst for pursuing a career in music. That pursuit lead him to create events in his hometown of Salina – from battle rap competition, "Move The Crowd,” to the monthly open-mic poetry series “ONEMiC." These events, along with his music, and his work with students in schools and churches across the state, have gained him a reputation as a&nbsp;community leader, as well as the admiration of many who benefit from his efforts.

Salina Animal Services: Keep pets warm

A car with the keys left inside was stolen early Wednesday morning from a west Salina residence.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that sometime between 12:50-1:50 a.m. someone stole a white Ford Taurus from a driveway in the 100 block of Bel Air Drive. The car, owned by Jesse Goetz, 40, of Salina, had a Kansas license plate of 388HSU.

Goetz told police the car was unlocked and a key was left inside.

The vehicle contained a Dremel tool, Oakley sunglasses, JBL Subwoofer, and two air mattresses. Total loss was estimated at $9,630, Forrester noted. One of the air mattresses and some other items from the car were located in the 1100 block of West Cloud Street, he added.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Topeka has issued a wind advisory in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

North winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. The winds combined with any falling snow may cause greatly reduced visibilities. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

NWS in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 1-9 a.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected. A brief period of wind gusts as high as 50 mph may occur as a cold front initially moves through, NWS noted.

Gusty winds will continue into early Thursday afternoon, but are not expected to be quite as strong as during the early morning hours.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Additionally, NWS in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 4 a.m. to noon Thursday for Marion County.

ABILENE -- Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for a Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on the last Friday of January. 

A total donation of $335, which included a $100 anonymous donation, was presented to the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee for their shoe drive to help purchase shoes for MHS employees in need. Employees also donated more than 50 pairs of gently used shoes. 

The day was organized by the MHS EOC committee.

Salina Presbyterian Manor recently achieved the coveted five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare health care communities more easily and to help identify areas about which they may want to ask questions when visiting a community. The ratings are displayed on the newly-launched Medicare.gov Care Compare website (<a href="http://www.medicare.gov/care-compare/">www.medicare.gov/care-compare/</a>), where each health care community is given a rating of between one and five stars.

Differences in care needs are considered in rating the community.The quality measure rating has 17 different physical and clinical measures for health care residents. The quality measures offer information about how well communities are caring for residents’ physical and clinical needs.
