Saline County 2024 crime index report results

On behalf of the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol announced Monday the fallen officer escort of Deputy Brandon Gaede from Wichita, Kansas, to Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas, on July 1, according to a statement from the KHP.&nbsp; Deputy Gaede died in the line of duty on June 27.

The escort, to include the Kansas law enforcement and larger first responder community, will leave Wichita at approximately noon and travel north on Interstate 135 through Salina. They will continue west out of Salina on Interstate 70 to exit 159, then go north on US-183 to westbound US-36. 

The escort will enter the city of Phillipsburg from the east on US-36/State Street. During the escort, motorists traveling along this route may experience delays.

Funeral services for Gaede are scheduled for July 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the Huck Boyd Community Center in Phillipsburg.

The Trump administration wants Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to raid worksites in the agriculture and hospitality industries, despite an initial reprieve this month. Experts say the policy could hurt businesses that rely on immigrant workers.

The approach to immigration enforcement among farm workers continues to swing back and forth under the Trump administration.

On Friday, President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-says-he-is-looking-new-steps-farm-labor-2025-06-20/" target="_blank">said</a>&nbsp;he’s considering a new policy that would allow the agriculture industry to keep employing immigrants who are not authorized to work, if farmers and ranchers can assume “responsibility” for their workers.

“We're looking at doing something where, in the case of good, reputable farmers, they can take responsibility for the people that they hire and let them have responsibility, because we can't put the farms out of business," Trump said at a recent press conference. "And at the same time we don't want to hurt people that aren't criminals."

Yet last week, the Department of Homeland Security told Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2025/06/16/trump-farms-hotels-immigration-raids/?utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank">continue raids</a>&nbsp;on farms, ranches and dairies across the United States.

That directive was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/13/us/politics/trump-ice-raids-farms-hotels.html" target="_blank">briefly paused</a>&nbsp;by Trump following large ICE operations earlier this month — including the arrests of more than 70 people at a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/news/news-articles/people-are-scared-ice-agents-raid-facilities-in-omaha/" target="_blank">meat-packing facility</a>&nbsp;in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time, Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114670684664650262" target="_blank">wrote on Truth Social</a>&nbsp;that the policy was “very aggressive” and could take long-time immigrant workers away from farms.

Despite&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/06/16/nx-s1-5430846/farming-industry-immigration-ice-worksite-enforcement-trump" target="_blank">pushback</a>&nbsp;from some leaders in the agriculture industry, as well as people advocating for immigrant worker rights, the Trump administration then&nbsp;<a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/06/19/trump-immigration-raids-farms-hotels-border-czar" target="_blank">said</a>&nbsp;it will continue targeting agriculture worksites, as well as in the hospitality industry, with a focus on people with a criminal background.

Many in the agriculture industry are concerned the policy will constrict labor and hurt both the farm business and everyday consumers. That includes Matt Teagarden, the head of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kla.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Livestock Association</a>, which represents more than 5,000 members in the state.

“These raids disrupt our food supply and contribute to higher food prices,” Teagarden said. “In addition to the workers who’ve been detained, these raids contribute to fear in these communities and lead to workers— fully legal workers — staying home out of fear.”

For immigrant workers and the rural communities who depend on their labor, the potential for incoming raids is concerning, said Sonia Parras, an immigration attorney in Des Moines, Iowa.

“The unintended consequence is that they destroyed the lives of the immigrant community, but also the industries, the mom-and-pops shops, and businesses,” Parras said. “Is the cost of a raid — on U.S. citizens and the economy of a town and surrounding areas — worth extracting or detaining immigrants in the area?”

In 2008, Parras provided pro-bono legal services when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2008/06/09/91327136/immigration-raid-leaves-mark-on-iowa-town" target="_blank">ICE raided a meat-packing plant</a>&nbsp;and arrested nearly 400 people in Postville, Iowa. This past week, she said her phone has been ringing “off the hook” with people calling in a panic, asking for help if they get arrested.

“When the administration — to me — prioritizes punitive enforcement that targets these workers, it creates a bit of a paradox where the very workforce that the farmers relied upon is being driven into the shadows,” said Parras.

Throughout the country, 42% of farm workers were not legally authorized to work in the U.S. in 2022, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/chart-gallery/chart-detail?chartId=63466" target="_blank">report</a>&nbsp;from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Another 19% were immigrants authorized to work through visas or who had legal permanent resident status.

Although Teagarden and others in the agriculture industry support immigration enforcement in the form of “securing” the southern U.S. border and “removing violent criminals,” he said they want to work with Trump and Congress to address the issue in a “reasonable way” that supports the industry.

“It really is clear to me that the people pushing for these raids that target farms and feed yards and dairies, have no idea how farms operate.” Teagarden said. “You can’t just turn off a cow. It doesn’t work that way. Cows have to be milked, cattle have to be fed.”

Work from immigrants in the agriculture industry has allowed labor costs for farmers and ranchers to remain low, and ultimately keep food prices lower for consumers, according to David Ortega, a professor of food economics and policy at Michigan State University.

“The agricultural sector relies heavily on migrant workers in order to do some of those critical activities that many U.S. born workers are either unable or unwilling to perform,” Ortega said. “Things like harvesting, planting, working in meatpacking plants, all of the critical activities that are needed to get food from the farm all the way to the table.”

Some agriculture stakeholders throughout the Midwest, particularly in the specialty crop sector who rely on immigrant labor, are already raising concerns, Ortega said. Without some protections in place for immigrants working in the agriculture industry, the enforcement policy is having a “chilling effect” on workers who are not easily replaced — even those who are authorized to work in the U.S. — he said.

“It's not surprising that we're seeing producers reach out to individuals in elected positions, noting that these activities, the rhetoric that the Trump administration has on illegal immigration and these mass deportations, are affecting their business,” Ortega said.

ICE raids push farm workers to stay home ‘out of fear.’ That could hurt U.S. food production

This is day 6 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest continues across Kansas, with the USDA reporting it halfway complete, behind last year but close to the five-year average. Farmers are still seeing the effects of heavy rainfall, with muddy fields and delayed progress in several areas. Despite the setbacks, farmers across the state continue to make progress as June comes to an end.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 53 percent complete, well behind 76 percent complete last year but near 56 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 29, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated 24 percent poor to very poor, 28 percent fair and 48 percent good to excellent.

In south central Kansas and north along the I-135 corridor, excessive rainfall on mature wheat has made harvest difficult. As fields start to dry out and combines cut around mud holes, some localized quality issues are being reported.

In Edwards County, farmer Danny Hattrup started cutting around June 17 and is now about two-thirds of the way through harvest. He’s hoping to wrap things up within the next week. Progress has been slowed by rain delays and lingering muddy spots, which have made fieldwork more complicated than usual.&nbsp;

On Monday, the field Hattrup was cutting was yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with a test weight a little below an average year, around 59 pounds per bushel. Hattrup planted two different wheat varieties this season, and both are performing about the same so far.&nbsp;

This past weekend, harvest became a true team effort with help from his daughters, Brooke and Shelby and his son-in-law Cole, all pitching in to keep things moving.

Harvest is underway in Scott County, where Brinlee McNary, grain merchandiser for the Scott Coop, reported they took in their first load on June 20. She said timely spring rains helped the wheat significantly in the area, contributing to a strong start. The elevator has received about 40 percent of its expected volume so far.

Yields have been highly variable, ranging from 40 to 80 bushels per acre, but McNary noted yields are a little higher than in an average year. Protein levels have ranged from 7 to 15 percent, with the average coming in just under 12 percent.

McNary said the main challenges of this harvest have been the wet conditions and the presence of wheat streak mosaic virus, which has affected some fields in the area.

Winter wheat conditions were rated 24 percent poor to very poor, 28 percent fair and 48 percent good to excellent.In south central Kansas and north along the I-135 corridor, excessive rainfall on mature wheat has made harvest difficult. As fields start to dry out and combines cut around mud holes, some localized quality issues are being reported.In Edwards County, farmer Danny Hattrup started cutting around June 17 and is now about two-thirds of the way through harvest. He’s hoping to wrap things up within the next week. Progress has been slowed by rain delays and lingering muddy spots, which have made fieldwork more complicated than usual.&nbsp;On Monday, the field Hattrup was cutting was yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with a test weight a little below an average year, around 59 pounds per bushel. Hattrup planted two different wheat varieties this season, and both are performing about the same so far.&nbsp;This past weekend, harvest became a true team effort with help from his daughters, Brooke and Shelby and his son-in-law Cole, all pitching in to keep things moving.Harvest is underway in Scott County, where Brinlee McNary, grain merchandiser for the Scott Coop, reported they took in their first load on June 20. She said timely spring rains helped the wheat significantly in the area, contributing to a strong start. The elevator has received about 40 percent of its expected volume so far.Yields have been highly variable, ranging from 40 to 80 bushels per acre, but McNary noted yields are a little higher than in an average year. LINDSBORG - Lindsborg is inviting the community and the surrounding areas to celebrate it's 'Old Fashioned' 4th of July at Swensson Park.

All ages are invited to meet at the gazebo on the 400 block of North Main St. at 5:00 pm to decorate strollers, wagons, bikes, or yourself, then march through the park. Concessions, provided by SVHS Drama Club, will be available to purchase beginning at 5:30 pm. Yard games such as play Gaga Ball, Corn Hole, Yard Jenga, and many will be occurring throughout the celebration. Ice cream will be available to purchase from the Indigo Moo'd Ice Cream Cart.

The entertainment will begin at 6:00 pm and will include community talent and a band performance. While there is limited bleacher seating available, attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The celebration is open and free to the public. There will not be an organized public display of Fireworks.&nbsp;

Salina Tech receives generous donation for new Industrial Maintenance and Automation building

Salina Police are currently investigating a home burglary that consisted of several guns being stolen.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, June 27th just after 1:00 pm, SPD received a call about about an alleged residential burglary that occurred on the 200 block of NW. Place.

Police stated that a 66-year old male reported that sometime between 5:00 am - 1:00 pm on Friday, an unknown suspect(s) entered his home and stole a total '16 guns.' The guns consisted of a mix of rifles and handguns.

SPD confirmed there was no forced entry and estimated cost was determined to be around $9,000 currently.

Police are currently investigating the crime and are seeking for surveillance video.

No identification was confirmed regarding the unknown suspect(s).

Salina Police investigating home burglary, several guns stolen 

A male suspect was accused of an assault charge after an argument with a female inside a residence.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Saturday, June 28th at around 4:50 pm, officers responded to the report of a domestic disturbance that occurred on the 1100 block of Oak.&nbsp;

Allegedly, a 34-year old female and a 36-year old male identified as Seth Seed, got into an argument. As the argument surfaced, the female attempted to leave the home but Seed 'did not allow her.' Both live at the residence.

The female then noticed a gun that was on Seed and police stated that she was 'in fear.' She then was able to exit the home and called police afterwards.

Officers then arrived to the scene and made contact with the female, but not with Seed who remained inside the home. Police stated that one of their negotiators was able to persuade him to exit the home. Seed was then arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail without incident.

Seed was booked on the following requested charges:

Criminal restraint, Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon and Damage to property.

Police stated that alcohol was 'believed to be a factor.'

HAYS — The Wild West Festival Committee has announced details of the much-anticipated return of a carnival to the annual Fourth of July weekend celebration, with Garry Moore Amusements set to provide a variety of rides, games, and food stalls.

Wild West Festival announces carnival details and festival updates

Five outstanding faculty and staff members have been recognized for their distinct commitment and accomplishments at K-State Salina in the 2024-2025 academic year.

"As a campus, our most important resources are the people who provide valuable services to our students," said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean. "The annual awards presented to faculty and staff are a small way to intentionally recognize the talent and efforts from the people who strive for excellence every day."

Doug Zerr, instructor of composites, is the recipient of the Rex and Jean McArthur Family Faculty Award. The award recognizes a distinguished faculty member who demonstrates teaching excellence in the classroom, commitment to research and innovation, and honorable service to the college, university and community.

"Doug has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to teaching excellence and has played a pivotal role in advancing K-State Salina's capabilities to serve the region," said his nominator. "His passion for composites and dedication to student success drive everything he does. His hands-on, practical approach to teaching ensures that students gain real-world experience while keeping course material accessible and engaging."

Tim Bower, professor of computer systems technology and robotics and automation engineering technology, has been recognized with the Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence. The award recognizes a K-State Salina faculty member for their exemplary service to students, commitment in the classroom and overall excellence in teaching. Recipients promote excellence in education with a focus on developing students' talents and abilities.

"Tim challenges students with complex topics, presenting them in a structured and engaging manner," his nominator said. "A prime example of his meticulous approach is the online study guides he has developed. These comprehensive resources serve as textbooks for his courses, providing students with free and accessible learning materials. Because the study guides are available on the internet, they have also generated interest from people all over the world."

Chad Bailey, instructor of electronic computer engineering technology and robotics and automation engineering technology, is this year's recipient of the Delker Faculty Excellence Award. The award celebrates a faculty member who is developing innovative courses and curricula. Recipients demonstrate a passion for improving student learning opportunities and innovation in academics. This award encourages self-nominations from faculty who seek to bring new ideas into the classroom.

"One of the best parts of teaching is seeing students go from reading about robots to actually building robots," Bailey said. "My goal is to create more hands-on learning experiences where students use autonomous mobile robots to work on projects that matter. Whether it's developing navigation systems, testing out sensors or figuring out how robots can help in agriculture, I want students to learn by doing."

Devin Larm, assistant chief flight instructor, is the second-ever recipient of K-State Salina's Professional Staff of the Year award. Recipients of this award are acknowledged for their exemplary contributions to the mission and values of the campus through their commitment to service, productivity, innovation and leadership.

"Devin is an alumnus of our college and continues to provide an unwavering service to the aviation department and our students," his nominator said. "He has displayed true grit and professionalism throughout the numerous adjustments to staff, policy and curriculum. He is innovative in his teachings and creative with the students."

Sgt. Sean Morton, campus police sergeant, has been honored with the K-State Salina University Support Staff of the Year Award. This distinction recognizes an employee's contribution to the success of the campus through excellence in performance and service.

"Since setting foot on campus, Sean has been tireless in his efforts to enhance safety and security for students, staff and faculty," said his nominator. "Over the past year, he has led the effort to increase our security camera coverage on campus, which resulted in us doubling the number of cameras from this time last year."

His hands-on, practical approach to teaching ensures that students gain real-world experience while keeping course material accessible and engaging."<h2>Tim Bower</h2>Tim Bower, professor of computer systems technology and robotics and automation engineering technology, has been recognized with the Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence. The award recognizes a K-State Salina faculty member for their exemplary service to students, commitment in the classroom and overall excellence in teaching. Recipients promote excellence in education with a focus on developing students' talents and abilities."Tim challenges students with complex topics, presenting them in a structured and engaging manner," his nominator said. "A prime example of his meticulous approach is the online study guides he has developed. These comprehensive resources serve as textbooks for his courses, providing students with free and accessible learning materials. Because the study guides are available on the internet, they have also generated interest from people all over the world."<h2>Chad Bailey</h2>Chad Bailey, instructor of electronic computer engineering technology and robotics and automation engineering technology, is this year's recipient of the Delker Faculty Excellence Award. The award celebrates a faculty member who is developing innovative courses and curricula. Recipients demonstrate a passion for improving student learning opportunities and innovation in academics. This award encourages self-nominations from faculty who seek to bring new ideas into the classroom."One of the best parts of teaching is seeing students go from reading about robots to actually building robots," Bailey said. "My goal is to create more hands-on learning experiences where students use autonomous mobile robots to work on projects that matter. Whether it's developing navigation systems, testing out sensors or figuring out how robots can help in agriculture, I want students to learn by doing."<h2>Devin Larm</h2>Devin Larm, assistant chief flight instructor, is the second-ever recipient of K-State Salina's Professional Staff of the Year award. Recipients of this award are acknowledged for their exemplary contributions to the mission and values of the campus through their commitment to service, productivity, innovation and leadership."Devin is an alumnus of our college and continues to provide an unwavering service to the aviation department and our students," his nominator said. "He has displayed true grit and professionalism throughout the numerous adjustments to staff, policy and curriculum. He is innovative in his teachings and creative with the students."<h2>Sgt. Sean Morton</h2>Sgt. Sean Morton, campus police sergeant, has been honored with the K-State Salina University Support Staff of the Year Award. This distinction recognizes an employee's contribution to the success of the campus through excellence in performance and service."Since setting foot on campus, Sean has been tireless in his efforts to enhance safety and security for students, staff and faculty," said his nominator. K-State Salina recognizes five faculty and staff members for the 2024-2025 academic year

"Daddy Bud Day," a free community block party in north Salina, will take place at Pacific Park, 701 W. Pacific, on Saturday, July 5th at 10:00 am.

Salina native James Curtis (also known as Cash Hollistah), in collaboration with the Curtis Family and local nonprofit 'Salina Shares,' will be hosting the event. 

Beginning at 10:00 am,&nbsp;Daddy Bud Day&nbsp;will feature&nbsp;free hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled onsite by the Salina Police Department. Complimentary beverages will also be provided. Dominoes and spades tables will be on hand, in addition to basketball, bounce houses and various water &amp; lawn games for the children.&nbsp;

The event will also feature prizes and giveaways throughout the day. The main highlight of the celebration&nbsp;is the 2nd annual DBD All-Star Basketball Game at 2:00 pm. Sponsored by Be Wealth, the All-Star Game will pit Hollistah's team, "Big Bank," against his younger brother John Curtis III's team, "Northside Mafia", in a rematch of last year's game in which the Mafia won, 93-84. The game will feature players such as former Harlem Globetrotter, Hannah Mortimer, Kansas food blogger JackStacksEats and Salina rapper Dee Eazy.&nbsp;

Daddy Bud Day was originally founded in 1967 by the late John “Bud” Curtis Sr., who created the event as a way to give back to Salina’s African-American community,&nbsp;though everyone was welcomed. "Bud" provided free food, organized games, and even covered swimming fees, all from his own pocket. After his passing in 1971, the event carried on for several more years, peaking with more than 400 attendees in 1974. "Bud" was posthumously honored with a Salina&nbsp;Juneteenth Award in 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;Daddy Bud Day&nbsp;was revived in 2023 by his grandson, James.

"Hearing stories about my grandfather and what he did for the community, coupled with the lack of events that bring different parts of the community together, especially in north&nbsp;Salina,&nbsp;was what made me want to resurrect it," Curtis said. "I wanted to continue the legacy left by him, my&nbsp;father, and my mother (the late Jeannette Curtis)."

In honor of that legacy,&nbsp;efforts have been underway to rename Pacific Park to “Curtis Park,”&nbsp;as well as launch a broader&nbsp;renovation of the space.

Daddy Bud Day&nbsp;is free and open to the public. Bringing your own lawn chair is strongly encouraged.

Chamber announces new Business Expo event for the Fall 

While fireworks and festivities are staples of Independence Day, the holiday often brings anxiety and risk for pets. Loud noises, bright flashes, unfamiliar guests and tempting table scraps can all pose threats to their health and safety.

Kansas State University veterinarian Susan Nelson encourages pet owners to start preparing early, especially if their pet has shown fear around fireworks in the past.

"One of the most important things is to keep your pet inside during the days fireworks are allowed, as it is this time of year that sees the highest numbers of lost pets," said Nelson, clinical professor at K-State's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Veterinary Health Center</a>. "The noises and flashes are very frightening for many pets and can cause them to flee in an attempt to get away from the commotion."

If your pet must go outside, always use a leash. Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with ID tags, and consider microchipping if it's not already done, as it will provide backup if your pet's collar is lost. Keeping contact information up to date is critical in case your pet gets lost.

Nelson advises creating a calm, secure environment indoors to help reduce pet stress. For many pets, a familiar crate or closed-off room offers a comforting retreat.

"A crate or quiet room with the blinds drawn can make a big difference for dogs that feel overwhelmed," Nelson said. "Giving them a familiar, enclosed space helps them feel safe when the noise outside gets intense."

Keeping pets indoors also reduces their risk of physical harm. Fireworks, whether lit or leftover, can injure or poison animals. In neighborhoods where fireworks are frequently used, relocating pets to a quieter home or boarding facility may be the safest choice.

Additional measures can also be helpful, depending on your pet's needs. Over-the-counter calming aids are an option for some animals.

"Some pets respond well to calming supplements, especially if their anxiety is mild to moderate," Nelson said. "Just remember, many of these need to be started several days in advance to be effective, so don't wait until the fireworks begin."

Other strategies include soothing background noise — such as a television, radio or white noise machine — or offering a distraction like a food puzzle or stuffed food toy. Anxiety wraps may help some pets and can be used alone or in combination with medication.

For pets with a history of severe noise phobia, it's important to consult your veterinarian early."

There's no one-size-fits-all solution," Nelson said. "For some pets, an anxiety wrap is enough. But others with more serious phobias may need prescription medications, and for those, you need to plan ahead of time with your veterinarian."

Beyond anxiety, Nelson warns there are many holiday hazards that involve food, drinks and common party items."

We often see pets get sick around the holidays from foods that aren't meant for them," Nelson said. "Even small amounts of things like chocolate, fatty meats or xylitol can have serious consequences."

Toxic foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and salt. Doughs with yeast can expand in a pet's stomach, causing pain or more serious complications. Fatty meats can trigger life-threatening pancreatitis. Corncobs, bones and wooden skewers can also cause internal blockages or perforations if swallowed. Alcohol and energy drinks are other risks that should be kept out of reach at all times.

Nelson said common backyard and party items such as matches, lighter fluid, glow jewelry, insect coils, citronella candles and repellents — especially those containing DEET — are also dangerous if ingested or used incorrectly around pets.

Hot weather adds to the risk. Pets can overheat quickly, so access to shade and fresh water is essential. Watch for signs of heat stress and move pets indoors to cool spaces if needed.

Finally, even if your dog seems unfazed by loud sounds, it's best to leave them at home during firework shows.

"Even the most easygoing dog can react unpredictably when fireworks start," Nelson said. "Loud noises, flashing lights and big crowds are a stressful combination. It's always safer to leave your pet at home."

Always read and follow label instructions.

 Always purchase high quality fireworks from a reliable, legitimate source.

 Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated shooter."

 Adults should always supervise use of fireworks by older children.

 Always wear eye protection when lighting fireworks.

 Never ignite fireworks indoors. Make sure your outdoor area is safe for firework use.

 Never point or throw fireworks at a person, building, or animal.

 Have a source of water handy, in case of fire.

 Always shoot fireworks from a level surface.

 Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.

 Never attempt to re-light malfunctioning fireworks.

 When lighting fireworks, never position any part of your body over them.

 Never experiment with homemade fireworks. They are dangerous and illegal.

 Bottle rockets and other skyrockets that are mounted on a stick or wire are illegal.

 It is illegal to shoot fireworks on or under a vehicle, on any public roadway, within 50 feet of a firework stand or where fireworks are stored, and gas stations or any place liquid gas- including propane - is stored.&nbsp;

Construction has started today&nbsp;of a raised pedestrian crossing on YMCA Drive.&nbsp;

According to the City of Salina, construction will take up the&nbsp;entire width of the roadway. As a result, YMCA Drive will be closed between the entrances to the Salina Family YMCA.

Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes and use caution near the work zone.

Accordingly, this work is part of the City of Salina’s $5.9 million 2025 maintenance capital improvement program.

As a result, YMCA Drive will be closed between the entrances to the Salina Family YMCA.Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes and use caution near the work zone.Accordingly, this work is part of the City of Salina’s $5.9 million 2025 maintenance capital improvement program.Salina Family YMCA stated that improvements after this construction will include:Installation of safety traffic signs with blinking lights at crosswalks. Raised crosswalk/speed hump. Extended sidewalk on the bus stop side. Enhanced entrances to the east parking lot.Salina Family YMCA encourages those entering from Westchester Dr., to enter and take a sharp right in the lane created by the traffic cones all the way to the north end of the lot then proceed into the lot as usual. YMCA states that this is the 'safest way for traffic to flow and allow for normal parking.'The project is expected to take up to 2-3 weeks.
