Kansas Wesleyan senior Kelsey Ripperger is the latest KWU student to be selected for a Washington Center internship, according to information released by the organization recently. 

The internship will take place for EarthShare, an environmental non-profit in the Washington, D.C. region.

Ripperger, Hastings, Neb., is a multi-year honor roll recipient, a letter winner on the volleyball team, past president of the KWU Student Environmental Club and a member of the Alpha Chi honor society. She also was president of the KWU chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, a resident assistant, a member of student government and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Although she is on-ground in the Arlington, Va. area, Ripperger will be working virtually during her internship. She will also take a course through the Washington Center entitled “Scandalous Washington: Presidents, Impeachments and Elections.”

“I am so grateful for this opportunity,” said Ripperger. “The chance to move to the D.C. area is a history lover’s dream! I have enjoyed exploring all the monuments and historical buildings. I hope to make connections, expand my network and better understand what it takes to make a non-profit function. I appreciate the support from KWU and its wonderful professors like Dr. Specht, who helped me get here.”

“Kelsey is a terrific student,” said Dr. Anita Specht, one of Ripperger’s main academic mentors at KWU. “I’m so glad that she is able to use the skills she learned as a history student and apply them to her love of the environment.”

The Washington Center is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization located in Washington, D.C. that works with thousands of host organizations to provide once-in-a-lifetime internship opportunities. Universities around the country partner with the Center to provide opportunities for their students, but KWU is the only university in Kansas to serve as a partner of the Washington Center.

KWU's Ripperger selected for Washington Center internship

Improving vehicle safety systems takes priority over developing self-driving cars

WICHITA – Automakers may already hold the key to improving public acceptance of self-driving cars: fine-tuning existing vehicle technology. AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey finds that only 22% of people feel manufacturers should focus on developing self-driving vehicles. The majority of drivers (80%) say they want current vehicle safety systems, like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assistance, to work better and more than half—58%—said they want these systems in their next vehicle.

These findings signal that people are open to more sophisticated vehicle technology, which if they provide positive experiences for drivers, will open the road to self-driving vehicle acceptance. Interestingly, people’s hesitation toward self-driving vehicles is reflected by how little the pandemic has changed this opinion with the majority saying COVID-19 would make no difference in their decision to use a self-driving vehicle as an alternative to public transportation or ride-hailing.

“People are ready to embrace new vehicle technology, especially if it will make driving safer,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s Director of Automotive Engineering and Industry Relations. “Consumers are clear about what they want and if automakers seize the opportunity to provide a better experience now, it will pave the way for the vehicles of tomorrow.”

Nearly 96% of 2020 vehicle models came equipped with at least one advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning or lane keeping assistance. Consumers who buy new will likely have at least one type of vehicle safety system and in many cases, this could be their first interaction with more advanced vehicle technology. Previous AAA research has found that some systems, particularly those that provide the highest level of automation available to the public, do not always work as expected. These negative experiences could influence driver opinion of future vehicle automation. It also reinforces the need for manufacturers to continue to hone vehicle technology by expanding testing and focusing on including more real-world scenarios encountered by drivers.

Still lukewarm about self-driving technology For six years, AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey has gauged consumer sentiment regarding emerging vehicle technology, focusing on self-driving vehicles. While American’s interest in owning a car with more advanced technology grows, they are still struggling to warm up to the idea of full vehicle automation. AAA’s survey found that 14% of drivers would trust riding in a vehicle that drives itself, similar to last year’s results. However, 86% either said they would be afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle (54%) or are unsure about it (32%).

COVID-19 has had little impact People’s hesitation toward self-driving vehicles is reflected by how little the pandemic has changed opinion. AAA asked drivers if COVID-19 would influence their decision to use a self-driving vehicle as an alternative to public transportation or ride-hailing. Only a relatively small number said they would be more likely to opt for a self-driving vehicle, but a larger number said COVID-19 would make no difference in affecting their decision.

Self-driving vehicles are still years away from being available to consumers. However, as testing on public roads expands, drivers will likely interact with various levels of new vehicle technology. The public should also find opportunities to educate themselves on when and how self-driving vehicles will be a part of daily life. A collective effort by both industry and consumers is what it will take to move the needle away from apprehension and closer toward acceptance.

“Transparent, accurate and frequent information from the industries involved in developing self-driving vehicles will ease consumer concerns,” said AAA’s Brannon.

Methodology The survey was conducted January 15-17, 2021, using a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population overall. The panel provides sample coverage of approximately 97% of the U.S. household population. Most surveys were completed online; consumers without Internet access were surveyed over the phone.

A total of 1,010 interviews were completed among U.S. adults, 18 years of age or older. The margin of error for the study overall is 4% at the 95% confidence level. Smaller subgroups have larger error margins.

AAA Survey: Drivers want fine-tuning of existing technology

The frigid weather that descended on the middle of the United States was something that many will not soon forget.

The outbreak of historic cold overspread the Plains on Feb. 6 and stuck around like a tongue on a flag pole through Feb. 18.

"A persistent Arctic airmass like this hasn't affected the region since the 1980s! During this stretch, there were days where the high temp did not make it out of the single digits! The Arctic surge made it all the way down to south Texas, where snow was observed on the beaches of Galveston!" the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita exclaimed in a report about the Arctic blast.

As for Salina's time in the deep freeze, we had 12 consecutive days of temperatures below 32 degrees, which ended on Feb. 17. According to NWS-Wichita, that was the longest time below freezing since 1983, which saw a 15-day frozen run. Salina's longest below-freezing streak was 18 days in 1905.

Additionally, Salina set a record for the number of consecutive days during which the temperature didn't get above 20: 10 consecutive days that ended on Feb. 16, NWS-Wichita reported.

Salina also had a consecutive three-day stretch of low temperatures below zero. That frigid streak was the longest since 2016, NWS-Wichita noted. Salina's record for consecutive days with a low temperature below zero was eight in 1983.

While Feb. 14 was a day for warm feelings and love, Feb. 15 was a frigid record-setter for Salina. The low came in at -10 degrees, breaking a 1905 record of -7 degrees. Salina's high on Feb. 15 was 2 degrees, which broke a 2007 record of 10 degrees, according to NWS-Wichita.

Salina's longest below-freezing streak was 18 days in 1905.Additionally, Salina set a record for the number of consecutive days during which the temperature didn't get above 20: 10 consecutive days that ended on Feb. 16, NWS-Wichita reported.Salina also had a consecutive three-day stretch of low temperatures below zero. That frigid streak was the longest since 2016, NWS-Wichita noted. Salina's record for consecutive days with a low temperature below zero was eight in 1983.While Feb. 14 was a day for warm feelings and love, Feb. 15 was a frigid record-setter for Salina. The low came in at -10 degrees, breaking a 1905 record of -7 degrees. Salina's high on Feb. 15 was 2 degrees, which broke a 2007 record of 10 degrees, according to NWS-Wichita.

Salina sets records during historic 2021 Arctic blast

At approximately 11:42 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, Salina Fire Department EMS and Salina Police Officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North Fourth Street, Salina, for a report of the sound of gunfire and someone screaming.

Upon arrival, Salina Police Officers located a female inside a vehicle at 731 N. 4th Street, Salina. This female had a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased by Salina Fire Department EMS personnel.

The deceased female was identified as Courtney Ann Hoffman, 36 years old, of Salina, Kansas.

This case is being considered a homicide and detectives are attempting to identify suspect(s). In addition, Salina Police Detectives are working to identify and locate persons who were in the area at the time of the shooting.

Unlike the spring basketball basketball event of a similar name, everyone wins in the Greater Salina Commmunity Foundation's Match Madness.

The 10th anniversary edition of Match Madness is scheduled for 7 a.m.-7 p.m. March 25 in the Salina Fieldhouse, 140 North Fifth Street.

On this day, donations to any of the 78 participating charities will be matched up to 50 percent. The list of participating charities can be found online at www.matchmadnessgscf.org.

Since the event’s inception in 2012, 4,660 donors contributed a record-breaking total of $1,780,029 to 88 charities. The events match and bonus grants total $724,676 and the total benefit exceeds $2.5 million in total impact to the community, GSCF noted in a news release. 

All donations made on March 25 will go to each charity’s endowed fund held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. These funds are permanently invested to produce a steady stream of income charities can count on every year, which eases the pressure to raise annual funds.

Plus, every gift to a nonprofit’s endowed fund will be matched (proportionally, up to 50 percent) with a cash grant that the charity can access immediately to meet immediate needs. This year, there are $200,000 in matching funds, thanks to the generosity of private donors. 

“This event is a win-win for everyone, and a great example of community collaboration. Donations of all sizes are pooled together to provide long-term support for our charities, and the match given can be used instantly by the charities to meet urgent needs,” said Jessica Martin, GSCF executive director.

MANHATTAN – Like many eager gardeners, Ward Upham is about tired of winter. There’s just a certain itch to get out and work on flower and vegetable beds.&nbsp;

Fortunately, Upham said, some early work can be done right now.&nbsp;

“Try planting peas as soon as the soil dries and the soil temperature reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit,” said Upham, a horticulture expert with K-State Research and Extension. “There are several types of peas we can plant in Kansas; probably the most common is the shelling pea, and the old standard in this group is Little Marvel.”&nbsp;

Other varieties that do well in Kansas are Green Arrow, Knight, Maestro, Burpeeana and Mr. Big. 

“All of these are early maturing types that allow us to harvest a crop before the hot weather arrives and stops production,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Snow peas, common in stir-fry, have a crisp, edible pod. Upham recommends Dwarf Grey Sugar and Mammoth Melting Sugar.&nbsp;

“Sugar snap peas resemble shelling peas but have a thick, fleshy pod and can be eaten fresh, steamed or cooked,” Upham said. “Like snow peas, they are not shelled, but eaten pod and all.”&nbsp;

Upham’s recommendations for sugar snap peas include Sugar Bon, Sugar Ann, Super Sugar Snap and Sugar Sprint.&nbsp;

He said peas should be planted shallow – about one-half inch deep – to encourage rapid germination and emergence. Seeds should be spaced 2 inches apart in a row.&nbsp;

“Many people plant two rows 6 to 8 inches apart so the floppy plants can support one another,” Upham said. “For some older varieties, this may not be enough. They may need trellising to support the growing vines. You might consider installing fence to keep rabbits away.”&nbsp;

Some other early gardening chores to cure the winter blahs, according to Upham, include:&nbsp;

Start lettuce transplants indoors.&nbsp;“Transplants allow lettuce to mature earlier so that it escapes the excessive heat that can lead to a strong flavor and bitterness,” he said. Transplants should be started 4 to 5 weeks before moving the plants outdoors.

Implement control measures for iris leaf spot by removing old, dead leaves.&nbsp;Iris leaf spot is a disease that attacks the leaves and occasionally the flower stalks and buds of iris. The disease over-winters in old leaves, so it’s important to remove and destroy them. Wet weather, common in early spring, encourages infection. Heavily-infected plants from last year should be sprayed with a fungicide containing chlorothalonil.

Prune deciduous shrubs.&nbsp;Not all shrubs need to be pruned (such as witch hazel), but others need to be pruned to maintain or reduce size, rejuvenate growth or to remove diseased, dead or damaged branches. Shrubs that flower in the spring should not be pruned until immediately after flowering.&nbsp;

Did you know nearly 40% of Americans can’t cover a $400 expense from their savings?<a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/2020-economic-well-being-of-us-households-in-2019-dealing-with-unexpected-expenses.htm" target="_blank">1</a>

People give many different reasons for not being able to save money, and I’ve heard them all. Some people do have it harder than others, but I’ve also seen enough single moms work three jobs to change their family tree, and enough blue-collar dads retire as millionaires that I’m prone to believe most of us are better off than we think.

That might sound like tough love, and it is. I hate seeing the way this pandemic has affected the livelihoods of people all over this country. The habit of saving isn’t something we can do passively. In fact, you’ve got to be intentional and save like your life depends on it. You need an emergency fund that can cover three to six months’ worth of your basic expenses.

I’m a spender, so I get why saving is hard. On top of that, I have the “status” money tendency—which means I enjoy more expensive things. You can find out what&nbsp;your&nbsp;money tendencies are, and what they mean for your financial habits, in my&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/what-would-you-do-money-quiz" target="_blank">free quiz</a>. But I’ve found ways to make saving a habit in my life, because I see how crucial it is.

Here are three ways you can turn your urges to spend money into saving money:

Dreams are crucial to your financial life, because they motivate you to save for the long haul. If you’re a spender, saving for the sake of saving isn’t meaningful. But when you really, truly want something, no one can stop you from saving for it and working hard to make it happen.

Focusing on something you want to spend money on later will help you say no to the momentary high of a new pair of shoes. The shoes will still be there once your emergency fund is in place.

There are two things I do before I make a purchase over $10. First, I think about it overnight. If I still genuinely want the item the next day, I’ll move on to my second decision-maker. I ask myself:&nbsp;Would I still want this if no one else ever saw it?&nbsp;For me, using these filters stops impulse purchases dead in their tracks. Plus, it’s a good way to check my heart before I buy more stuff.

Give yourself little rewards along the way

You’ll never stick with a new habit if you don’t give yourself little rewards along the way. If you’re working toward a $5,000 emergency fund, treat yourself to a nice dinner after each $1,500. If you value tangible things over a night out, spend a little on something you want once you reach the halfway point.

Rewarding yourself will keep you motivated, and scratch that spending itch. Just don’t go overboard. Keep your long-term dream at the forefront of your mind!

CRUZE: Three ways to stop spending and start saving

ABILENE -- The challenge has been met, and the winnings have been awarded to the top three winners of the Impact Sports &amp; Fitness 2021 Weight Loss Challenge. 

Winners were awarded based upon the percentage of body weight lost during the six-week program, according to a news release from Memorial Health System.&nbsp; The top winners received $500, $250, and $100 respectively for first, second, and third place.

First place winner was Andrea Taylor with 11.76% weight loss. In second place was David Elliott 11.74% weight loss and in third place was Jesse Cornell with 11.53% weight loss.&nbsp; Alecia Sare was the trainer for Taylor and Elliott, and Laurol Overlease was the trainer for Cornell.&nbsp;

“The weight loss challenge was a great time to meet new people, work out, and have fun while doing so,” Andrea Taylor said.

“This year's challenge was very competitive, and all the participants were successful at achieving their weight loss goals,” Impact Sports and Fitness, Personal Trainer, Anita Larson said. “We would like to congratulate all who participated!”

This year’s challenge consisted of more than 50 participants assigned to teams. Each team met with a trainer every week and participants also worked out on their own. The trainers leading the teams were Anita Larson, Sare, and Overlease. 

Impact Sports and Fitness sponsors the Weight Loss Challenge annually.

Impact Weight Loss Challenge winners announced

If you're an Evergy customer, your bill might be higher, but your rate hasn't gone up. That's the word from the electricity provider for a large part of Kansas, including Salina.

According to information on the Evergy <a href="http://evergy.com">website</a>, the cost you see on your electric bill varies based on how much electricity you use that month. Billing is by the kilowatt hour used, and according to Evergy, an average residential customer uses approximately 900 kilowatts per month. Extremely cold weather may result in higher electrical usage, especially if you use electricity to heat your home.

"We haven’t raised the price we’re charging you, meaning your electric rates didn’t go up, you just used more electricity, so your bill is higher," Evergy explained.

While Texas and its burgeoning rates have been in the news since last week's winter storm devastated the state, Evergy noted that its electric rates are "set very differently than in Texas." Electricity is regulated in Kansas and Missouri where Evergy's customers are, while Texas is a deregulated state.
