The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 6 p.m. for the following counties in our area.

North winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph and relative humidity with minimum values from 15 to 18 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

As a part of continued efforts to support job seekers and employers, and in light of the recent announcements of upcoming reductions in force happening in the community, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Kansas WorkforceONE on a job fair.

The fair is open to the general public and is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. April 7 at Tony’s Pizza Event Center, 800 The Midway.&nbsp;Current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and mask orders will be in place.

More than 30 area employers are scheduled to be present. Job seekers are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes with them.&nbsp;

Currently there are no booth spaces available. Companies that would like to be placed on a wait list for a booth space for the event may contact Renee Duxler at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce via phone at 785-827-9301.

ESBON — Kansas growers now have another resource for soil health issues.

The Kansas Soil Health Alliance is a recently formed nonprofit organization that has been established to be a trusted partner and valuable soil health resource for Kansas growers.

The Kansas Soil Health Alliance is led by a board of Kansas farmers and ranchers supported by five partner organizations. The alliance seeks to promote the benefits of soil health principles to Kansas growers, provide up-to-date science-based information pertaining to soil health and educate Kansas growers about system-based soil health production methods.

The Kansas Soil Health Alliance’s mission is to improve and protect Kansas soils. The alliance invites all growers - no matter the farming operation size or current farming and ranching practices - to utilize resources and learn more about Kansas soil health efforts and events. The alliance will also connect experienced Kansas growers who are working to improve soil health with growers new to the effort.

“We are excited to work with Kansas farmers and ranchers to provide information and learning events focused on building more resilient soils. A resilient soil will help provide a steady income through extreme weather events,” according to Michael Thompson, chair of the Kansas Soil Health Alliance.

The next Science on Screen program at the Art Center Cinema is scheduled to include a free screening of Radium Girls followed by a presentation about the&nbsp;Schilling Groundwater Contamination Project.

Radium Girls is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;Tuesday in the Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Following the film,&nbsp;stay for Science on Screen and guest speaker Martha Tasker, director of the City of Salina's Utilities Department. Tasker was the project manager for the former Schilling Air Force Base Groundwater Contamination Project. After the film, she will discuss the background of the former Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, the contamination found in the soil, surface water, groundwater, and bedrock there, and how she worked to resolve the contamination issue, according to information from the Art Center Cinema.

Science on Screen is a nationwide initiative to promote scientific literacy through entertainment, inspiring audiences an increased appreciation for STEM topics—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Science on Screen films are free in the cinema.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All Science on Screen discussions are in person or available to participate through Zoom from the safety of your home!&nbsp;&nbsp;Registration is free, and everyone is welcome to join in the conversation even if they haven’t seen the suggested films. Art Center Cinema: 'Radium Girls' to open for Martha Tasker

One year ago: Florida authorities arrested a megachurch pastor after they said he held two Sunday services with hundreds in attendance in violation of coronavirus restrictions. (The charges were later dropped.) A Navy hospital ship arrived in New York City to help relieve the coronavirus crisis gripping the city's hospitals. (President Donald Trump said a week later that he would allow coronavirus patients to be treated aboard the ship in addition to patients who did not have the virus.) Macy's, Kohl's and Gap Inc. all said they would stop paying tens of thousands of employees who were thrown out of work when the chains temporarily closed their stores because of the pandemic. Bill Withers, who wrote and sang a string of soulful songs in the 1970s that included "Lean on Me" and "Ain't No Sunshine," died at 81 in Los Angeles.

Just before 9 p.m. the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) opened the road.&nbsp; Authorities have released few details on the fire. Check the Post for additional details as they become available.

In-person high school theater workshops offered by the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts are returning this summer. The five unique summer theater workshops for northwest Kansas teens are sponsored by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

After successful summers in 2018, 2019, the program offered online opportunities in 2020 due to COVID-19. This summer, the Hansen Foundation is pleased to see a return to in-person workshops.

Each week-long musical theatre workshop is open to high school students (incoming freshman through graduating seniors).&nbsp; In just five days, participating students will conceive, write, choreograph, compose, design, rehearse and perform an original piece of musical theatre in collaboration with a staff of professional artists.

July 5-9 – Russell (location TBA) July 12-16 – Phillipsburg (Huck Boyd Center) July 19-23 – Concordia (Brown Grand Theater) July 26-30 – Hoxie (Hoxie High School) July 26-30 – Salina (Salina Community Theater)

Students from surrounding communities and counties are encouraged to participate in a workshop closest to them.&nbsp; Registration is limited to the first 20 students in each location.&nbsp;&nbsp;For more information or to register, visit <a href="http://lovewell.org">lovewell.org</a>, and click on Apply, and then Kansas.

Although a workshop cannot replace a full theatre arts program offered in schools, Lovewell offers students an opportunity to explore this genre in a unique way. The response from the students and faculty in previous summers was overwhelmingly positive.

The week-long day camp/workshop brings students from all different creative backgrounds together to create an original work of musical theatre from scratch. While the performance is an enormous part of the workshop, the focus is on the creative process. To make it come together, the process needs writers, actors, poets, dancers, singers, dreamers, visual artists, musicians, composers, designers, and creative students of all kinds.

The students will work with a team of professional artists to help utilize all the students’ gifts and explore the arts while forging new friendships and making memories to last a lifetime.

The Hansen Foundation is underwriting the cost of the workshops so that the student participation fee is significantly discounted to $50.&nbsp; However, no student who is truly committed to participate will be denied the opportunity due to inability to pay. Scholarships are available.

Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts is a not-for-profit organization that brings students together with professional artists to conduct these unique and transformational workshops. The Lovewell team are artist who make their living as musical directors, playwrites, choreographers, composers, lyricists, etc.

Lovewell is based in Florida, but its roots are in Kansas. After a pilot in New York in 1984, the process became the “Lovewell Experience” in 1987 in Salina. The director of the program is a Kansas native.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case reported in Saline County. Thankfully, the number of new cases and hospitalizations have fallen dramatically since their peak just a few short months ago. Vaccines are becoming more and more available. The public health order has been allowed to expire, while the mask mandate continues to offer a line of defense as we hope to be near the end of this pandemic.

It is important to stay vigilant and continue to practice the safety measures that have helped flatten the curve of this outbreak. County health officials continue to keep a close watch on the COVID variants that have begun to appear closer and closer to home. We appreciate everyone who has done their part to keep our community healthy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We are happy to share that no additional deaths due to COVID-19have been reported since our March 22 update. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have one patient hospitalized battling COVID-19.

There have been 10 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on March 26, which brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 6,061.

The Health Department staff are now&nbsp;actively monitoring 88 cases.&nbsp;At least 5,865 people have recovered,&nbsp;but sadly&nbsp;108 members of our community have lost their lives to this deadly virus. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:

Saline County: Today 1st anniversary of COVID-19 in county; 10 new cases

South High School students in Craig Bagley’s business class put their skills to the test and created a winning video advertisement for the Salina Army Recruiting Station.

Sergeant Leopoldo Delgado, U.S. Army recruiter in Salina, brought the idea to Central and South high schools. He asked students to base their advertisement message on the phrase, “I played soldier as a kid.” Students developed a story using their imaginations and choosing the audio and video components.

Bagley explained,&nbsp;“Both A and B scheduled students had the extra challenge of working together without being able to be in the classroom at the same time. They were able to overcome this by posting their work on Google Classroom. The students would then relay their feedback and the project steadily improved over the course of the two weeks they worked on it.&nbsp; I was very proud of the final cut we delivered to the Salina Army Recruiting Station.”

Students from both Central and South high schools participated in the challenge that encouraged fun and built class cohesiveness. The project was a fun way for students to express themselves and their artistic vision.

The South High School ad creators enjoyed a pizza party provided by the Salina Army Recruiting Station. Their ad will be posted on social media platforms throughout Kansas, including:

LINDSBORG -- Retired McPherson County Sheriff's Captain Doug Anderson received a grand welcome home this afternoon.&nbsp;

Anderson, who has been battling COVID-19 and its effects since October and was being treated out-of-state, was transferred back to the Lindsborg Community Hospital via medical transport early this afternoon. 

A longtime member of the McPherson County Sheriff's Office, Anderson received a law enforcement escort into Lindsborg as people stood along the streets to wave and welcome him home.

ABILENE -- Patients, guests, and visitors entering Memorial Hospital will be required to complete a COVID-19 screening beginning Monday.

 The screening will consist of three automated steps: a temperature check, answer one question regarding exposure and symptoms, and then a sticker will be printed, and the person will be asked to wear the sticker in order to verify they have been screened.

Employees at Memorial Health System are already completing a very similar automated screening daily, before they report to their work areas.

“Even though the mask mandate has been lifted in Dickinson County, we are required by the CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) Conditions of Participation to implement a process to screen every person who enters our building,” Carolyn Mikesell, health system director of quality, explained. “We will have a person at the front entrance to assist people with the automated kiosk. We want to make this as easy as possible for everyone.”

Those visiting the health system should also know that even though the mask mandate has been lifted, masks are still required inside of the Memorial Hospital.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Cold Weather Rule ends on Wednesday. That means Kansans who are behind on electric and natural gas utility bills may be subject to disconnection of service unless they contact their utility company to make payment arrangements.&nbsp; 

A variety of payment options are available and will vary by utility, as well as the date disconnections will resume. Utility customers experiencing difficulty keeping up with their bills are encouraged to call their utility no later than Wednesday to be eligible for the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan to catch up on overdue accounts. Under the plan, the customer must make an initial payment of 1/12 of the overdue amount, 1/12 of the bill for current service, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fees if any, plus any applicable deposit owed to the utility. The balance is billed in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the regular monthly bill. On Dec. 15, the Kansas Corporation Commission extended an&nbsp;earlier&nbsp;<a href="https://estar.kcc.ks.gov/estar/ViewFile.aspx/20201215103827.pdf?Id=13d68adb-a6c3-41fa-8bae-b25ee2105a0f" target="_blank">order</a>&nbsp;related to COVID-19 that&nbsp;requires utilities under its jurisdiction to offer 12-month payment plans and waive late fees through&nbsp;the official end of the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;That order is still in effect, but customers who have two previous broken pay agreements may not qualify.&nbsp;That is why it is important to make arrangements before the Cold Weather Rule ends. Utility customers experiencing difficulty keeping up with their bills are encouraged to call their utility no later than Wednesday to be eligible for the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan to catch up on overdue accounts. Under the plan, the customer must make an initial payment of 1/12 of the overdue amount, 1/12 of the bill for current service, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fees if any, plus any applicable deposit owed to the utility. The balance is billed in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the regular monthly bill. On Dec. 15, the Kansas Corporation Commission extended an&nbsp;earlier&nbsp;<a href="https://estar.kcc.ks.gov/estar/ViewFile.aspx/20201215103827.pdf?Id=13d68adb-a6c3-41fa-8bae-b25ee2105a0f" target="_blank">order</a>&nbsp;related to COVID-19 that&nbsp;requires utilities under its jurisdiction to offer 12-month payment plans and waive late fees through&nbsp;the official end of the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;That order is still in effect, but customers who have two previous broken pay agreements may not qualify.&nbsp;That is why it is important to make arrangements before the Cold Weather Rule ends. Mask mandate review, possible new position among county agenda items

A pickup with keys left in it that was stolen from a west Salina residence Friday night was recovered the next day in the parking lot of a nearby business.

Leslie Gahman, 60, of Salina, reported to police that sometime between 9:20-10:10 p.m. Friday, someone drove off with his white 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup that was parked in his driveway in the 1500 block of Beverly Drive, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. Gahman told police that the keys were in the ignition.

Gahman said that he was in his livingroom when he heard the pickup start up and leave westbound on Beverly Drive. The pickup had an American flag covering the back window and was valued at $14,000, Forrester reported.

At noon on Saturday, officers were sent to O'Reilly Auto Parts, 523 S. Broadway Boulevard, in regard to a stolen vehicle being parked in the business' lot. Gahman had been called by an acquaintance and told that his pickup was there, Forrester explained.

The manager of the business told police that the pickup was parked there at 6:30 a.m. when he arrived for work. 

According to Forrester, surveillance video from the area is being reviewed.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast.

Winds out of the south at 30 to 40 mph with gust 50 to 60 mph and relative humidity as low as 18 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Winds out of the south at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph and relative humidity as low as 20 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop could be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not advised. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could start a fire.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

Winds from the south at 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph and relative humidity from 16-21 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Fires that were completed Sunday should be checked to be sure they are completely extinguished. Winds will shift to the north in the late evening to overnight hours as a cold front passes.

In addition to the red flag warning issued for today, Marion and McPherson counties also face a high wind warning later today.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a high wind warning for multiple counties in south-central Kansas, including Marion and McPherson counties. The high wind warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Monday.

South winds of 35 to 40 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected.

Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
