The City of Salina has announced additional crack sealing on city roadways for next week

Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will seal cracks on the following City of Salina streets, weather permitting:

Residents will be asked to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years. Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Crack sealing work on city streets continues

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.5 percent in April. This was a decrease from 3.7 percent in March and a decrease from 12.6 percent in April 2020.

“We've seen significant improvement in the unemployment rate throughout the past year, from a historic high of 12.6 percent in April 2020, down to 3.5 percent just twelve months later,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “Great progress is being made as we are approaching pre-pandemic unemployment rates."

In Saline County, the unemployment rate dipped to just 3 percent, down a half a percent from March.&nbsp; Dickinson County saw a similar drop to 3.1 percent.&nbsp; The unemployment rate in Ottawa, Ellsworth and McPherson County all were under 3 percent in April

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs decreased by 1,400 from March. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, decreased by 1,300 from the previous month, while government decreased by 100.

“Over the past year Kansas has recovered more than 64 percent of the 158,000 jobs lost in March and April of 2020,” said Labor Economist Todd Rilinger. “The leisure and hospitality industry, which saw the largest losses last year, added 500 jobs in April 2021. This brings the total jobs recovered for the industry to more than 73 percent."

Since April 2020, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 101,600. This change is due to an increase of 103,800 private sector jobs and a decrease of 2,200 government jobs.

The Saline County Vaccination Collaboration has begun working with Saline County employers to host on-site COVID-19 vaccination clinics for their employees.

Vaccination clinics offered to local businesses

ABILENE - When it comes to tourism, Abilene is more than "one trick pony." Just check out the new 2021-2022 Abilene Visitors Guide!

Soon to be available in print, the guide is now available online at <a href="http://abilenekansas.org/request-a-visitors-guide">abilenekansas.org/request-a-visitors-guide</a>. There you will also find a form to fill out to request a printed visitors guide and other information to help you make Abilene a travel destination.

"Abilene is not a one trick pony, we have so many unique and quality tourism attractions to offer visitors. You cannot see everything in one day," Julie Roller Weeks, director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, told Salina Post. "A trip with the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad, a show at the Great Plains Theatre, a tour of the historic Seelye Mansion, and tour of the Eisenhower Museum, and visit to Abilene’s other tourism attractions can easily fill a weekend. Add in our unique shops and dining opportunities, murals, and parks, and Abilene is the perfect Midwest weekend getaway."

The 34-page visitors guide is bursting with information about the various attractions, as well as dining, shopping, and lodging guides, a map, and event and historical information.

According to Weeks, tourists have already begun to explore what Abilene has to offer. 

"In the last month, visitors from: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Florida, California, Colorado, Arizona, and, of course, Kansas have all visited our visitors center. Right now, road trips are huge!" she said.

While the pandemic put a damper on tourist visits in 2020, Weeks said that thousands of tourists visit Abilene in a more normal year. For instance, in 2019, the Abilene attractions had the following numbers of visitors.

Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad: 7,698

Dickinson County Heritage Center: 7,898

Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum: 147,256

According to Weeks, the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum's visitor numbers were lower in 2019 due to the museum renovation.

"Historically, their visitation would be closer to 200,000," she added.

Weeks also noted that although the Eisenhower Museum recently reopened from its pandemic closure, it is only open for limited hours and days. Additionally, tickets must be purchased in advance.

Chief Judge Johnson to sit with Kansas Supreme Court May 28

Twenty-three new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nicholas Delaney, a deputy at the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office, was the class president for the 278th Basic Training Class. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief of Police for the Pratt Police Department, Nathan Humble. James Buettgenbach, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 278th Basic Training Class.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Deputy Jacoby Williams of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot.” Deputy Jimmy Bolden of the Gray County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Daniel Everhart of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office walked, ran, or biked more than 200 miles during their time at KLETC and exceeded the other physical requirements of the 200 Mile Club including push-ups, sit-ups, and a timed run.&nbsp;

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.&nbsp;

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.&nbsp;

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.&nbsp;

SALINE COUNTY –One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30 p.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Freightliner trctor-trailer driven by Wasihun Bekele Adamu, 37, Dallas, Texas, was northbound on Intestate 135 exiting to westbound Interstate 70.

The driver was unable to negotiate the off ramp curve due to excessive speed. The truck overturned and come to rest on the grass embankment.

EMS transported Adamu to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Twenty students have been selected to receive the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students from KU who will transition into a full-time master’s or doctoral degree program at KU in the fall semester. Students who were selected demonstrated achievement in leadership and scholarship, and they possess the ability to envision and attain goals that require energy and tenacity. The Self Memorial Scholarship provides each recipient with a $10,000 scholarship award applied to tuition and fees, leadership and career development training, and an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students. The leadership and career development training, called the Scholar Development Program, complements the specialized education and training provided by the graduate programs.

Madison “Al” and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. The Selfs began their legacy of supporting graduate students in 1989 with the establishment of the Self Graduate Fellowship. Since 1991, the Self Graduate Fellowship has supported over 200 doctoral students.

The Self Memorial Scholarship was launched and permanently endowed in 2014, and the first scholars were awarded in 2018-2019. The overall mission of the Self Graduate Programs is to provide funding and development opportunities for exceptional students who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole.

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Twenty students have been selected to receive the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students from KU who will transition into a full-time master’s or doctoral degree program at KU in the fall semester. Students who were selected demonstrated achievement in leadership and scholarship, and they possess the ability to envision and attain goals that require energy and tenacity. The Self Memorial Scholarship provides each recipient with a $10,000 scholarship award applied to tuition and fees, leadership and career development training, and an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students. The leadership and career development training, called the Scholar Development Program, complements the specialized education and training provided by the graduate programs.Madison “Al” and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. The Selfs began their legacy of supporting graduate students in 1989 with the establishment of the Self Graduate Fellowship.  Based on the investigation, the crime was determined to have happened at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

You’re in pretty good shape financially, and you could probably pay off the rental property in a year or two. So really, it’s a matter of personal preference. I will say this; there’s nothing worse than&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/renting-out-a-house" target="_blank">being a landlord</a>&nbsp;if you don’t want to be one.

It’s not a bad thing to feel that way. Some folks have fun and enjoy landlording for a while, but then other things become more important. It’s your life and your feelings that matter at this point.

If you still enjoy dabbling in real estate and being a landlord, go for it. If the shine has worn off, get rid of the place. MANHATTAN – Once the current stretch of rainy days in Kansas slows, many homeowners will finally get their chance to mow the lawn.&nbsp;

They’re likely to find that it’s a bit taller than normal.&nbsp;

Kansas State University horticultural expert Ward Upham said it’s important to remember that you should not take off more than one-third of the grass blade at one time. So as the grass grows taller, set the mower blade as high as possible and bring it down in steps.&nbsp;

“If more than one-third is taken off, the plant reacts by using stored energy reserves to quickly send up new growth,” Upham said. “This reduces the amount of energy available for plants to deal with stress or damage done by insects or disease.”&nbsp;

Upham acknowledged it is not always possible to obey the “one-third rule.”&nbsp;

“In such cases, cut as high as possible, even though you may be taking off more than one-third of the blade,” he said. “Bring the height down gradually by cutting more often and at progressively lower heights until you reach the target height.”&nbsp;

 </figure>MANHATTAN – Once the current stretch of rainy days in Kansas slows, many homeowners will finally get their chance to mow the lawn.&nbsp;They’re likely to find that it’s a bit taller than normal.&nbsp;Kansas State University horticultural expert Ward Upham said it’s important to remember that you should not take off more than one-third of the grass blade at one time. So as the grass grows taller, set the mower blade as high as possible and bring it down in steps.&nbsp;“If more than one-third is taken off, the plant reacts by using stored energy reserves to quickly send up new growth,” Upham said. “This reduces the amount of energy available for plants to deal with stress or damage done by insects or disease.”&nbsp;Upham acknowledged it is not always possible to obey the “one-third rule.”&nbsp;“In such cases, cut as high as possible, even though you may be taking off more than one-third of the blade,” he said. “Bring the height down gradually by cutting more often and at progressively lower heights until you reach the target height.”&nbsp;Fertilizing Warm Season Grasses&nbsp;Upham said June is the time to fertilize such warm-season grasses as bermudagrass, buffalograss and zoysiagrass.&nbsp;“These species all thrive in warmer summer weather,” he said, “so this is the time they respond best to fertilization.”&nbsp;Upham added that nitrogen is the most important nutrient for each species:&nbsp;●Bermudagrass requires the most nitrogen, about 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet for the highest quality. “Either 3 or 2 pounds can be used for a lawn under lower maintenance,” he said. “If using 3 pounds, apply in early May, June and July. If applying fertilizer twice, the first should go down in early June and the second in mid-July.” Upham added that if homeowners are planning to apply four separate and equal applications, those should occur about four weeks apart beginning in early May, and the last application no later than Aug. 15. Any lawn fertilizer will work for bermudagrass.●Zoysiagrass grows more slowly and does not require as much nitrogen, only 1 ½ to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Split the total into two applications, one in early June and again in mid-July. Lawn fertilizers with slow-release nitrogen are preferred over the quick-release variety. ●Buffalograss requires the least nitrogen of all warm-season lawn species, generally 1 pound per 1,000 square feet. It can be done in one application in early June. Slow-release nitrogen is preferred, but quick-release is okay to use.&nbsp;Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for gardening and maintaining home landscapes.
