The Saline County Health Department has traced multiple COVID-19 positive exposures&nbsp; to a local funeral over the weekend.

The funeral took place at the New Community Christian Church, 530 E. Cloud Street, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, the health department noted.

Those in attendance should monitor for symptoms, according to a news release from the health department. If symptoms develop, those persons should isolate at home, get tested, and let the test location know that they attended this event.

This afternoon I received my second dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Salina Family Healthcare Center .

I want to do my part to keep my family and community safe, and to help keep hospital beds open for those that need it at Salina Regional Health Center .

Some may wonder why I've waited until August to receive my vaccinations.

Honestly, like many, I struggled to navigate the tremendous amount of information and misinformation that is out there. I wanted to do my best to make an informed decision. But ultimately, it finally came down to trust, and whether or not I was going to trust those with the education, training, and expertise regarding this vaccine. It has proven to be an effective tool for reducing complications of the disease and is known to significantly reduce the need for hospitalization. I believe it is time to start trusting our institutions again, while also respecting the freedom of individuals to make health care decisions they're comfortable with. If you haven't received your vaccine yet, please consider doing so.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– To encourage vaccinations and mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Governor Laura Kelly and Dillons Health today launched a new vaccine incentive program. All newly vaccinated Kansans 12+ are eligible to receive $50 per dose, $100 total, according to a media release from her office.

“Getting every eligible Kansan vaccinated is critical to our efforts to slow the spread of the virus, protect our businesses, and keep kids in school,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“This incentive program is a another tool to support our ongoing vaccine efforts. I want to thank Dillons officials for their partnership and their commitment to the communities they serve.”

“Since day one of this pandemic, Dillons’ most urgent priority has been the health and safety of our associates, customers, and communities,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Steve Dreher, Dillons Stores division president. “Together with Governor Kelly, we are pleased to extend this incentive as a means to inspire more individuals to get vaccinated and help our Kansas communities move forward.”

SAH: Need-to-knows for festival-goers

TOPEKA – It’s not unusual for employees at a McPherson realty office to gift a few lottery tickets for each other’s birthdays, and this time Marsha Silver hit gold with a $20,000 win on the $2 Double Bonus Crossword game!

“Jeannie, my coworker, and I both had birthdays last week and got two Crossword tickets in our cards,” Silver said. “She had scratched hers and asked me if I won anything and that’s when I showed her the ticket and told her I had to go to Topeka!”

Silver hadn’t realized her full luck, though, until she showed the ticket to her husband. 

“He told me I missed an ‘L,’ which brought me up to 10 words for the $20,000! I couldn’t believe it; I was just happy with what I thought was $2,000!” she said.

The winner hasn’t told the purchaser about her luck yet, but she plans to throw a party for her coworkers soon. Besides celebrating, Silver says she’ll spend the winnings on family.

McPherson's Silver wins $20,000 from office birthday gift

A trailer and Bobcat skid steer that were stolen from west-central Salina Saturday were recovered later in Beverly.

Ryan White, 36, of Salina, reported that sometime between 3-4 a.m. Saturday, someone stole a flatbed, tandem-axle trailer with a Bobcat skidsteer on it from where it was parked in a lot along Holiday Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

The trailer, valued at $2,000, had a Michigan license plate on it. The Bobcat was valued at $6,000.

Surveillance video showed a 1990s Chevrolet Suburban pull up to the trailer. Two persons got out of the Suburban, hooked up the trailer to the Suburban, and drove away with it, Forrester said.

White later received a Facebook message from someone he didn't know that the Bobcat was in Beverly in Lincoln County.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office personnel recovered the trailer and Bobcat at the Murray Avenue Mini Storage facility in Beverly, Forrester said.

GLENDALE - The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of an ATV in the northwestern part of the county.

Aaron Davis, 30, of Junction City, told a deputy that sometime between 6 p.m. June 25 and 10:30 a.m. June 26, someone stole a late 1990s green Polaris 6x6 ATV that was parked outside an unoccupied house in the 10000 block of W. Lockard Road northeast of Glendale, Saline County Sheriff Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The incident was reported on June 26, Soldan said.

ATV stolen from unoccupied house in NW Saline County

A Salina man was arrested on requested charges that included assault and battery of a law enforcement officer after an alleged incident Monday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were sent to Community Corrections, 309 S. Broadway Boulevard, for the report of Daniel Greer, 23, of Salina, causing a disturbance. When they arrived, Greer had left Community Corrections, but was found a short while later in the 200 block of N. Broadway Boulevard near the viaduct.

Officers noted that there was an arrest and detain order out for Greer and attempted to arrest him, Forrester said. 

While officers were attempting to arrest Greer, he fell down the grassy hill area of the viaduct. When officers got to Greer's location, Greer allegedly kicked a 26-year-old male officer, Forrester said. The officer was not injured. Greer also allegedly tried to bite an officer.

Greer was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Salina man arrested after allegedly causing disturbance, kicking officer

Mystery continues to surround a piece of human skull found by mushroom hunters along Dry Creek on April 20.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that while the KBI lab was able to collect a partial DNA profile from the piece of skull, the partial profile was of insufficient quality for comparison testing.

Deputies were sent to Dry Creek north of W. Magnolia Road at 5:23 p.m. April 20 after two men hunting for mushrooms on the east side of the tree line along the creek bed reported finding a human skull. What they found was the top part of a human skull that appeared to have been there for quite some time, Soldan said on April 22.

 </figure>By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostMystery continues to surround a piece of human skull found by mushroom hunters along Dry Creek on April 20.Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that while the KBI lab was able to collect a partial DNA profile from the piece of skull, the partial profile was of insufficient quality for comparison testing.Deputies were sent to Dry Creek north of W. Magnolia Road at 5:23 p.m. April 20 after two men hunting for mushrooms on the east side of the tree line along the creek bed reported finding a human skull. What they found was the top part of a human skull that appeared to have been there for quite some time, Soldan said on April 22.

The Vaniers' gift, combined with other funds, will enable the Aerospace and Technology Campus to purchase and maintain 15 new planes in the first phase of updating the 30-plane fleet. The fleet is a combination of single-engine and multi-engine planes. A composite aircraft is also included in the new fleet, giving students the experience of flying a plane made of different materials than metal. The fleet will have planes from two manufacturers, so students can diversify their training experience, which better prepares them for future careers. The Vaniers' gift also funds the renovation of the hangars. John Vanier graduated from K-State in 1981 with a degree in agricultural economics. He developed his love of flying while in college under the tutelage of the chief pilot for his grandfather's company, ADM Milling. As residents of Salina, the Vaniers support K-State Salina because of their love for the community and appreciation for what the campus contributes to the Salina community. There’s a lot of talk right now about a four-day work week, both globally and here in the United States. In Iceland, over 80% of the workforce now has the four-day work week as an option, and the concept is catching on. Spain, New Zealand and Japan are giving it a shot, and a California congressman recently introduced legislation to make the 4-day work week happen here at home.

Could America be next? Not so fast, folks.&nbsp;

What Exactly is the 4-Day Work Week?&nbsp;

A four-day work week means people are working 32- to 36-hour weeks (maybe even less)—not full 40-hour weeks. That makes this concept different from shift work, where people work fewer days but still fit 40 hours into the work week. With a four-day work week, you’re guaranteed a three-day weekend&nbsp;every week.&nbsp;And did I mention that the pay doesn’t decrease? That’s right, you still get the same salary or hourly pay as if you’re working a full five days.

You might be saying, “You had me at three-day weekend!”&nbsp;Or maybe you’re wondering how productive people can be if they’re only working four days. Apparently, a four-day work week can make&nbsp;some&nbsp;people more productive. At least, that’s what studies showed in Iceland, where a number of workers say they feel less stressed and burned out. The study lasted from 2015 to 2019, and cut back on workers’ hours without cutting down on their income.

Those employees said having shorter hours actually improved the quality of their work,&nbsp;and&nbsp;they had the energy to do other things away from their jobs. They reported better overall attitudes, because they were coming to work fully present instead of running on empty.

The more rest you can get, the more likely you’ll be able to avoid feeling&nbsp;overworked. The benefits from this are huge for your mental health&nbsp;and&nbsp;the quality of your work. The less workplace burnout you feel, the more likely you are to stay invested in your job and produce quality results.

If you know you only have four days to get stuff done, you might be more careful about how you schedule your days, too. You might try harder to stay focused and have fewer interruptions. If you’ve been taking it easy and phoning it in on Fridays, a four-day work week might be the kick in the pants you need.

Sure, having a longer weekend might be great. But the truth is a four-day work week gives you less time to get your work done. That’s the harsh reality. If you’re only working four days a week, the pressure is on to jam-pack all you can into those four days. If you’re pressed to cram as much work and as many meetings as possible into only four days’ time, your&nbsp;stress levels&nbsp;could be higher than when you were working a five-day week.

Let’s take a moment to think about customers, too. This is a&nbsp;big&nbsp;issue. After all, five-day work weeks are the norm for most people, so it makes sense that the people you serve would expect it from you and your business. Suddenly having to deal with an extra day where you and your company aren’t available could lead to lots of unsatisfied customers.

Will a four-day work week happen in America?&nbsp;Don’t hold your breath. Traditional work situations may have morphed some since the pandemic, but it would take a lot&nbsp;to convince most businesses to go for this change.

ABILENE - The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo, through its annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign, raised $4,835 for the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund of Dickinson County.

Fans were asked to wear pink to the Aug. 6 performance of the rodeo to raise awareness of the fight against cancer, and the money raised was from voluntary donations.

It’s a good feeling when an event can help out the community, said Jerry Marsteller, rodeo chairman for the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo.

“We’re glad to partner with the Elsie Brooks Fund,” he said. “Anytime we can give back to others, it’s a good thing.”

Linda Bletscher, vice president of the fund, agreed. 

“It’s huge,” she said. “It helps so many people, and they are so thankful.”

Bletscher has been a volunteer with the fund for more than five years, and loves the work. 

“It is a pleasure to be involved. It’s so humbling to be able to help people. (Having cancer) is scary enough, and to be able to help people is good.”

The rodeo has been partnering with the Elsie Brooks Fund since 2008, and since then, has raised over $42,000 for the fund. The fund grants monies confidentially to those undergoing cancer treatment who are Dickinson County residents. &nbsp;

Abilene rodeo raises money for local cancer fund

Kansas Wesleyan and the Salina Education Foundation have announced a new scholarship program to both aid in teacher recruitment and further the values of diversity, equity and inclusion. 

The RISE program will provide a $22,500 KWU scholarship to qualified, selected transfer students who enter the KWU Teacher Education program. Historically underrepresented groups will be the focus of the effort.

“From the beginning, Kansas Wesleyan has been committed to both bettering our community and the values of diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement and university operations. “We were among the first in the state to offer educational opportunities for Black students, and we were among Kansas’ early leaders in women’s athletics. We see the RISE program as an opportunity to allow new, fresh voices to do just that. They will rise within our community to help educate the leaders of tomorrow, leaders who can carry these values to even greater heights.”

“Growing our teaching staff to reflect the diversity of our students and community is a priority for us,” said Linn Exline, USD 305 superintendent. “Part of our district’s mission is to create more belonging in schools and the RISE program will support this. We appreciate our partners, Kansas Wesleyan University and the Salina Education Foundation, for their work in making this a reality.”

In addition to the annual scholarship, the program will also provide a $5,000 forgiveable loan per student, enabling everyone in the program to complete a bachelor’s degree in Teacher Education at a greatly reduced expense. At the conclusion of the program and certification requirements, students will be provided the opportunity to become a teacher in USD 305.

On Aug. 31, 1980, Poland's Solidarity labor movement was born with an agreement signed in Gdansk that ended a 17-day-old strike.

Commissioners are scheduled to consider a request from the county's web committee to enter contract negotiations with GovBuilt for the design and construction of a new county website.

"GovBuilt's proposal was very thorough and showed that they had experience designing, building and hosting local government websites," according to information from the commission meeting packet.

Money for the design and building of a new county website was included in the 2022 budget that the commission approved last week.

Commissioners also will consider a request from the road and bridge department to purchase land in Falun on which to store a county motor grader used in that area. Currently, the motor grader is parked on land owned by the grader operator, who plans to retire at the end of September. Additionally, he plans to sell the land on which he currently parks the grader, the commission meeting packet information noted.

"We have identified a parcel of land to purchase for $2,000.00 This also extends the long range planning this department has been working on for several years, which is to get Saline County motor graders parked on Saline County property," Darren Fishel, road and bridge administrator, wrote in the proposal to the commissioners.

Other items on the county agenda for Tuesday include the following.
