As COVID-19 continues to rage through Saline County and the nation, Salina Family Healthcare Center has announced the dates of three free testing kit pick-up events in the next two weeks.

COVID-19 spit tests will be available to all on the following pick-up days.

●Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the former JC Penney’s store at the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street

●Sept. 23 from 4-6 p.m. in the northwest corner of the parking lot at Ace Hardware, 321 S. Broadway Boulevard

●Sept. 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair at the corner of W. Iron Avenue and Seventh Street

These tests are available for individuals and families: symptomatic, asymptomatic, or those who may have had a recent COVID-19 exposure. Each location will have a limited supply of test kits.

These PCR tests are designed to be taken at home. Nurses will be available on site for those who would prefer help collecting the saliva sample. Testing kits come with instructions, packaging, and a prepaid FedEx label. Once the sample is FedEx-ed to the lab, the results will be sent to the patients’ phones within 24-48 hours.

Salina Family Healthcare Center: COVID testing opportunities

Our church is without a pastor right now, and we rely on pulpit supply, so the preacher was a guest fill-in. The prayer he had prepared was one promoting environmental justice and in it we prayed to save our world from the overuse of harsh chemicals and the erosion of the soils brought on by agriculture. As you can imagine, that caught my attention. The pastor called on our church to take up the mantle of environmental justice. That carried with it a list of other issues I will not get into, but it also put a spotlight on global climate change and the effect agriculture has on it. I am Presbyterian, but the environmental justice movement was one promoted by the liturgy shared by many denominations. In our bulletin a small blurb promoted the environmental justice issue and indicated it was supported by several other churches including Catholic and Lutheran organizations. I would guess no matter what your religious affiliation you can find a link to this movement. Upon further research, and it did not take much, I learned one way your church could help save the environment was to limit the amount of red meat consumed because the production of red meat and the correlating grain production produced greenhouse gases. This is a tactic used by environmental activists that we know not to be true. Yes, the environmental movement has infiltrated even the most sacred space of the church. I am not trying to turn anyone against the church but rather I am saying as Farm Bureau members and as farmers and ranchers we must get involved to tell our story and let our fellow church members know what we are doing. We know we do not overuse “harsh” chemicals, and we do our best to retain and improve the soil. We all know we do our best to protect God’s creation, and now it is time to help educate our fellow church members. It is also time for us to get involved in the leadership of our churches at the regional and national levels so factual and correct information can be shared.

If we do not tell our story others will tell it for us and we cannot let that happen. If it can happen in our churches it will happen in all other areas too. For that matter this charge should go for every other organization in our lives whether it be the Lions or Rotary and even the Chamber in our local towns and cities. We know as farmers and ranchers we are the best caretakers of all God has entrusted us with. We work hard to care for the water, soil and air we all rely on, we know that, but the challenge is to make sure our urban neighbors know the truth. I know I am preaching to the choir so maybe we all need to start preaching to the congregation.

Celebrate the Old West with the Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair Sept. 25.

The majority of the activities will be in and around the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue. The museum staff is striving to bring more history elements to all aspects of the day, so this year the event will shift entirely to an Old West format. 

There is no entry cost for the street fair.

The day is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 25 with a parade on Santa Fe Avenue, beginning at Elm Street.

Then, around the museum, there will be Old West re-enactors roaming the street fair throughout the day, horseshoe tossing, roping, archery, blacksmithing, chili cook-off, free crafts to-go, caricaturists, and Color Me Crazy airbrush tattoos.

For $2, you can sample chili from six booths and vote for your favorite between noon and 1:30 p.m. The People’s Choice award and best decorated booth winners will be announced at 2 p.m. on the main stage.

This year's entertainment also will have an Old West theme and will include the following.

11 a.m.: Blue &amp; Gray Brass, Traditional American Patriotic Music

Noon: Jeff Davidson, western music highlighting western history

1 p.m.: Serenity Stringband, blend of five veteran musicians based at the north end of the Chisholm Trail in Abilene

2:15 p.m.: Kitty Hamilton, historical performer, as Kittie Hays of the Santa Fe Road

Additionally, the museum gallery will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for everyone to enjoy the special exhibit, The Crossroads. In addition, there is the popular hands-on, interactive exhibit, The Curiosity Shop. For safety purposes, free timed-tickets will be handed out that day on the museum landing for entry into the museum, allowing no more than 25 people in every 20 minutes.

With the new guidelines from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment about mass gatherings of 500 or more people, museum staff has identified and implemented several changes to minimize risk to attendees without creating a highly restrictive atmosphere, according to information from the museum. It is strongly encouraged that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, practice social distancing and mask wearing. 

“Most importantly,” said Susan Hawksworth, museum director, “we want this to be a safe event for the community. The decision to attend and participate in the street fair rests with each individual. Understanding the risks of participation is a personal decision. We hope each attendee will make responsible choices while considering themselves, their family, and the community.”

60th annual Marquette UMC barbecue fundraiser Wednesday

Fall Fix-Up is a few weeks away and The Friends of the River needs your help. 

The organization seeks volunteers for the annual community event, which is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon on Oct. 9.

Volunteers will meet at their worksites, and are asked to wear facemasks and bring their own gloves. Social distancing will be manditory. Tools will be provided, according to information on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/smokyhillriver">The Friends of the River</a> Facebook page. Children ages 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.

There are a variety of projects with which to help during this year's event. Those projects include the following.

Southeast of Saline homecoming candidates announced

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz today announced 13 counties will receive a combined total of $7.5 million through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Off-System Bridge Improvement Program.

“My administration is committed to improving the overall transportation system in our state, including bridges owned by cities and counties in need of long-overdue repairs,” Kelly said. “We look forward to fostering further partnerships among all levels of government to continue building the kind of robust, responsive infrastructure system that moves people and goods as efficiently as possible across Kansas and boosts our state and local economies.”

In Kansas, there are more than 19,300 locally owned bridges, of which 1,230 are in “poor” condition and an additional 3,844 are either unable to carry legal loads or accommodate modern truck sizes. Off-system bridges are located on roadways not otherwise eligible for federal aid.

State funding for the 13 projects will be enhanced by a minimum 20 percent match from each recipient, resulting in $10.4 million in total local infrastructure improvements. KDOT received 87 applications requesting $46.4 million as part of the Off-System Bridge Improvement Program.

“There is clearly a high demand for transportation infrastructure investments across our state,” Lorenz said.&nbsp;“By partnering with KDOT, our communities are better able to help local road systems do the job they’re intended to do – like moving people and goods – and thus promote economic development and create more opportunities for growth.”

In addition to this federally required program, KDOT reinstated the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program bridge program as part of the Kelly Administration’s 10-year, bipartisan Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program to assist cities and counties with the local roadway system.&nbsp;

Thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage this evening and overnight, mainly south of Interstate 70. 

A handful of strong to severe storms are possible before midnight, mainly along and south of a line extending from Great Bend to McPherson to Emporia. The strongest activity will be capable of dime to quarter size hail, 50 to 65 mph winds, along with pockets of very heavy rainfall and localized flooding.

A boat sustained $2,000 worth of damage while it was parked behind a business on S. Ohio Street earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 7 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday, someone damaged a Cobalt CS23 boat that was parked behind a business in the 400 block of S. Ohio Street. The boat is owned by Michael Frederiksen, 48, and Tanya Frederiksen, 51, both of Salina.

The Frederiksens told police that they had parked the boat behind their business at 7 p.m. Sunday, and discovered that it had been damaged when they returned at 6:30 a.m. Monday.

Forrester said the rear hydraulic cover for the engine compartment had been forced open to the point that the hydraulic rods had been broken. The seat that sits on this cover had been ripped off. Additionally, two of the windshield panels of glass had been broken out of the left side of the boat's windshield. 

Total damage was estimated at $2,000, Forrester said.

MANHATTAN – A pair of Kansans will be recognized during this year’s Fall Forestry Field Day for their efforts to sustain the state’s forestry resources.&nbsp;

Steve Haas of Riley County, and Locke Pierce of Republic County will be recognized formally at the 26th annual event on Oct. 13. &nbsp;

Haas will receive the Kansas Agroforestry Award, which recognizes landowners that have done an exceptional job of managing and implementing such agroforestry practices as windbreaks and riparian forest buffers. &nbsp;

“Steve has demonstrated leadership in promoting agroforestry through his establishment of a four-acre riparian forest buffer planting,” said Thad Rhodes, north central Kansas district forester with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansasforests.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Forest Service</a>&nbsp;who nominated Haas. “Riparian forest buffers can help stabilize streambanks, limit damage during flooding and filter run-off from crop fields. Steve also established a windbreak to protect his farmstead from winter winds, and three acres of native grass for wildlife benefits.” &nbsp;

Pierce, owner of Woodland Ranch, will be recognized as the Forest Stewardship Tree Farmer of the Year, which recognizes Kansas landowners who are sustainably managing their woodlands and related natural resources.&nbsp;

Their land must be certified in the American Tree Farm System and meet that organization’s standards of sustainability. Other requirements include owning at least 10 acres of woodlands and having a forest stewardship management plan for the property. &nbsp;

The land has been in the family of Locke’s wife, Lynn, for generations. Highlights of their accomplishments include completing 50 acres of forest stand improvement, a two-acre tree planting and a hedge-post harvest as part of preparing the tree planting site.&nbsp;

“The Pierces are advocates of the importance of actively managing woodlands, and in addition to their membership in the American Tree Farm System, they are active participants in the Walnut Council and the Kansas Forestry Association,” Rhodes said.&nbsp;

The awards will be presented during the annual field day Oct. 13 at Ted Cambern’s tree farm south of Erie, Kan. The Cambern family was named winners of the Forest Stewardship Tree Farmer of the Year in 2018 and their Tree Farm has been certified for more than 32 years.&nbsp;

The field day will feature a presentation by K-State associate professor and nationally recognized pecan expert Bill Reid, who will discuss pecan plantation management. Other sessions will cover forest stand improvement practices, wildlife projects and a sawmill demonstration.&nbsp;

Republic County's Pierce to be honored for forest resource efforts

Police are investigating the theft of a pickup and tools from downtown Salina earlier this week.

Kenneth Joy, 79, of Salina, reported that sometime between 11 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday, someone stole his 1999 Ford F150 pickup from where it was parked in the 200 block of S. Seventh Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The pickup was red in color and had a Kansas disabled license plate of B3987 on it, he added.

Additionally, Joy reported that there were approximately $2,000 of miscellaneous tools in the pickup when it was stolen. The pickup was valued at $5,000, Forrester said.

A handful of strong to low-end severe thunderstorms are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

 The strongest activity will be capable of dime to quarter size hail, 50 to 60 mph winds, along with pockets of heavy rainfall and localized flooding.

After what is being touted as one of the most notable years in university history, Kansas Wesleyan will celebrate the 135th anniversary of its founding Wednesday morning.

Wednesday’s gathering will begin at 11 a.m. in the Student Activities Center. The event is open to students, faculty and staff, as well as alumni and friends of the university. As in all campus buildings, face coverings are required indoors regardless of vaccination status. 

KWU comes off a 2020-21 school year that included three national championships in debate and forensics, two top-three finishers in international DECA competition, and its second straight KCAC Commissioner’s Cup in athletics. In August, the university welcomed its highest count of new, full-time undergraduate students ever.

“It’s been a truly wonderful year at Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of Advancement and university operations. “We couldn’t have accomplished all of this without the support of our alumni, friends and the Salina community. We are so thankful to be a part of this city! Now, we look to the future and even more exciting news, as we get ready to build for the next 135 years. We truly believe that the best is yet to come!”

1886, Sept. 15: The Administration Building is completed and opens its doors to the first class of 2 college students (one senior and one freshman), 61 students in preparatory classes, 25 in music, 20 in business, 9 in normal school, 27 in training school. Tuition and fees are $13.00. Most students live in Salina with host families or in rented rooms.

1887: H. M. Mayo is the first graduate of Kansas Wesleyan.

1891: C. W. Burch is the first graduate to complete all of his work at Kansas Wesleyan.

1893: The first informal “pick-up” game of football is played against Baker University. Baker wins, 44-0. Student injuries are so severe that administration and faculty ban football for the next five years. Baseball is the only varsity sport for many years.

1908: Carnegie Science Hall opens.

1911: Glenn Martin flies his self-built plane over southern Salina, near campus. Martin attended Kansas Wesleyan, but later moves to California, establishes several aircraft and aerospace companies, and becomes a major benefactor of Kansas Wesleyan.

1922-1930: The Hall of the Pioneers and Sams Chapel are built over a period of years.

1928: The Grafton-Clubb mural “The Coming of the Pioneers” in Sams Chapel is dedicated.

1948: Memorial Library is built and dedicated to the 24 students who died serving their country in World War II. Students form a line from the Carnegie Science Hall to shift the book collection, one tray at a time, to the new library.

1953: Earl C. Sams Hall of Fine Arts is dedicated.

1958: KWU is accredited by the North Central Association. KWU is continuously accredited by NCA, now called HLC (Higher Learning Commission), to the present day.

1968: Enrollment hits 800. Many male students are shuttled to campus from rented barracks at the former Schilling Air Base because the campus residence halls are full.

1969: Peters Science Hall is completed.

1987: King Gymnasium burns down. The building had been condemned but there were plans to remove the clock tower before demolishing the structure. The cause of the fire was reported to be of a “suspicious nature.”

KWU to celebrate 135th anniversary Wednesday

Today is Tuesday, Sept. 14, the 257th day of 2021. There are 108 days left in the year. 

On Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the poem "Defence of Fort McHenry" (later "The Star-Spangled Banner") after witnessing the American flag flying over the Maryland fort following a night of British naval bombardment during the War of 1812. 

In 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte's troops entered Moscow following the Battle of Borodino to find the Russian city largely abandoned and parts set ablaze.

In 1836, former Vice President Aaron Burr died in Staten Island, N.Y., at age 80. 

In 1847, during the Mexican-American War, U.S. forces under Gen. Winfield Scott took control of Mexico City. 

In 1861, the first naval engagement of the Civil War took place as the USS Colorado attacked and sank the Confederate private schooner Judah off Pensacola, Florida. 

In 1901, President William McKinley died in Buffalo, New York, of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin; Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him. 

In 1927, modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan died in Nice, France, when her scarf became entangled in a wheel of the sports car she was riding in. 

In 1982, Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly film star Grace Kelly, died at age 52 of injuries from a car crash the day before; Lebanon's president-elect, Bashir Gemayel, was killed by a bomb. 

In 1994, on the 34th day of a strike by players, Acting Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announced the 1994 season was over. 

In 2001, Americans packed churches and clogged public squares on a day of remembrance for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. President George W. In 2010, Reggie Bush announced he was forfeiting his 2005 Heisman title, citing a scandal over improper benefits while he was a star running back at Southern California; it was the first time college football's top award had been relinquished by a recipient.
