Corrina Hudsonpillar has joined the team at the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Salina as a donor advisor.

Hudsonpillar received her bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University in marketing. Using the skills from her degree and her love of service, Hudsonpillar became involved in a variety of different organizations within her community, including advisory council for the Hays Area Young Professionals, member of Kiwanis Club, past board member for the Red Cross and volunteer at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church (IHM), as well as Thomas More Prep-Marian Catholic High School.

As the new donor advisor, Hudsonpillar supports the relationship development between the Catholic Foundation and faithful across the Diocese of Salina. She will assist donors who wish to support the mission of the diocese, its parishes, schools and other ministries with a one-time gift today or a legacy gift that will further the diocesan mission generations ahead.

Foundation CEO Katie Platten said, “When long-time staff member Beth Shearer, executive director of development, announced her retirement from the Foundation, it became clear that we would need another person – someone with great people and communication skills. We are so pleased that Corrina has agreed to work with us. I cannot wait for everyone to meet her!”

A local man was arrested after he allegedly pointed a gun at two teens while driving in west-central Salina late Saturday afternoon.

Two Saline County teens - 17 and 18 years of age - told police they were driving northbound in the 600 block of S. Broadway Boulevard just before 5 p.m. Saturday when another vehicle pulled alongside and the driver allegedly pointed a gun at them, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

Police located the other vehicle in the 400 block of S. Broadway and arrested the driver, Kenneth D. Brown, 40, of Salina. According to Hanus, the following charges were requested for Brown.

Hanus said there apparently was a bit of road rage between the occupants of the two vehicles.

Salina man arrested in alleged road-rage incident with gun

A McPherson woman was injured in a single-vehicle rollover accident just west of Salina early Sunday morning.

Emergency personnel were sent to an injury accident on Kansas Highway 140 (K-140) just west of the intersection with Halstead Road at 2:29 a.m. Sunday, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

Danielle Horn, 28, of McPherson, was driving a 2016 Kia westbound on K-140 when she lost control of the vehicle. The Kia went off the roadway and struck two signs and a culvert before it rolled and caught fire, Soldan said.

Horn suffered injuries to both legs and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, he said.

Soldan said the case remains under investigation.

Police are investigating an incident in which more than $50,000 worth of damage was done to a former family fun center in southwest Salina.

Lindsborg man injured in wreck walks to weapons range for help

A third teen has been arrested in connection to the case in which a landscaper was shot with a gel gun in downtown Salina late Tuesday morning. Additionally, three other cases of such shootings were reported on Saturday.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that Kaleb A. Arthurs, 18, of Salina, was arrested Friday night on requested charges of battery and aggravated assault.

The arrest is in connection to a case in which a 26-year -old Salina woman was shot in the chest with a pellet from a gel gun while she was doing some landscaping work in the 200 block of S. Santa Fe Avenue on Tuesday morning.

On Friday, police announced that two teens, a 17-year-old Salina boy and Lucas E. Burleson, 18, of Salina, had been apprehended in the case.

Police believe the incident is part of a TikTok "Orbeez Challenge" that encourages participants to use airsoft-type guns that shoot gel or water beads at pedestrians. The nationwide phenomenon has resulted in multiple injuries, including in Salina.

Hanus said that between 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, three additional instances of people being shot with gel guns were reported. Two of the instances resulted in injury. Those instances include the following.

●A woman was struck in the face, resulting in a slight injury. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive.

●A 22-year-old female runner was shot near the intersection of S. Ohio Street and E. Crawford Street. No injury was reported.

●A 50-year-old veteran was struck in the face while sitting in a vehicle in the Sunset Plaza parking lot on W. Crawford Street. He was slightly injured.

Hanus said that people need to be aware that the TikTok challenge is dangerous and that there will be consequences for people who shoot others with gel guns. Parents particularly need to be aware of what their children are doing with gel guns, he said.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident during a police chase just after 7:30p.m. Sunday in Dickinson County is now in jail.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;was Herington Police were in pursuit of a 1999 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Matthew R. Mell, 34, Herington southbound from Herington to U.S. 56 Business Highway.

The driver lost control as he attempted to make a right turn onto 400 Avenue and the pickup rolled.

EMS transported Mall to the hospital in Herington. After treatment he was booked into the Dickinson County jail on requested charges that include assault on a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, interference with a law enforcement officer, DUI and flee or attempt to elude law enforcement, according to online jail records.

One country totally lacks a military! The Central American country of Costa Rica has not had a military since 1948. Their early history had armies and wars. Battles went back to the eventual overthrow of the Spanish empire in 1821. But after World War II was over, Costa Rica’s Defense Minister Edgar Cardona proposed abolishing the military and only maintaining a police force. This plan was taken to their constitutional assembly by Jose Figueres Ferrer. It was approved and amended their constitution in 1949.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Since then, the money that would have been spent on a military went into education, health care, and social security, providing a social stability that contrasts with the rest of Central America. For defense, their police force monitors their border and controls drug trafficking. A civilian guard can also be called upon to help in law enforcement. The attitude of always needing to fight enemies, the “military spirit” often common in other countries is absent in Costa Rica. &nbsp;

Switzerland has a long reputation for staying away from war. It does have an army with every young man trained from age 18 to 20. It is claimed that they can call up one-tenth of their population in case of an attack. If the United States had such a system, we could call up over 30 million! Yet the money spent on military in Switzerland was about 0.78 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020. In contrast, according to Statista, the U.S. spends 3.7 percent of our GDP on our military. Total U.S. expenditures on military are greater than the next twelve countries combined. And we are the major exporter of weaponry. We never listened to President Eisenhower when he warned us of the “military industrial complex.”

In trips to China universities, I often watch their noon news broadcasts. A decade ago they indicated that they were beginning to cut their army in half, from two to one million. In natural disasters, their Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) has functioned similar to our National Guard, rescuing citizens during floods, earthquakes and other disasters. However, discharging that many men could cause unemployment, so the drawdown has been gradual. New civilian fire and rescue teams have been built in part from ex-soldiers, while the remaining PLA is being modernized. Yet China only spends about 1.7 percent of its GDP on military, a figure that has remained constant for nearly three decades.

While China has one overseas base to equip their ships that help in the international patrols against piracy, the United States has well over 800 foreign military bases.&nbsp; And American attempts at nation building have been disastrous in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

But for the last decade, China has provided extensive aid to most countries in Africa as well as the array of central Asian countries extending from China to Europe (their “Belt and Road Initiative”) and has never interfered in those countries’ affairs. China’s formal policy of non-interference, written into treaties, recognizes that each country must evolve on its own from its prior history and culture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Talk has begun again of a return to the “Cold War” or the possibility of a World War III. We are not Costa Rica or Switzerland. But we would be wise to remember that the former Cold War never became hot, thanks to a brilliant foreign service officer, George Keenan. He was the man behind the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and Eisenhower's foreign policy.

Kennan explained how our foreign policy really depends on our national strength and not military spirit. “National strength is a question of our internal strength, of the health and sanity of our own society.” He felt that “America could not and should not attempt to tell other people how they should live their lives--Americans’ moral responsibility was for their own lives.” The only way we could influence others was by example, not by preaching or coercion. He found American “exceptionalism” to be dangerous and warned against going on crusades to save the non-democratic world.

When asked how best to counter the Soviet threat, he replied that we had to take care of “...our American failings, to the racial problem, to the conditions in our big cities, to the education and environment of our young people, to the growing gap between specialized knowledge and popular understanding.” In 1952, he wrote in the&nbsp;New York Times: “Let us not attempt to constitute ourselves the guardians of everyone else’s virtue; we have enough trouble to guard our own.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. He also has lectured at 27 universities during 20 trips to China. He holds the distinction of “Faculty Emeritus” at Emporia State University.

Women in leadership will be the focus of a conference at Kansas Wesleyan University March 31.

The conference, held to recognize Women’s History Month, will include a keynote address by Kim Grossardt, whose career experience consists of executive-level roles at Equity Bank, Pizza Hut, as well as the co-ownership of Grossardt Investments.

Luci Larson, former Salina mayor, Saline County commissioner, and owner of Action Travel in Salina, will serve as conference emcee. Additionally, the conference will feature a number of local women leaders as part of a speaker series throughout the evening, including the following.

The schedule for the conference, according to information from Kansas Wesleyan, is as follows.

4:30-5:15 p.m.: Appetizers and networking, Brown Mezzanine in the Student Activities Center

5:20-6:20 p.m.: 7x7 Speaker Series, 201 Peters Science Hall

6:30-7 p.m.: Keynote speaker Kim Grossardt, 201 Peters Science Hall

There is no registration fee to attend the conference, however, those attending are asked to provide donations of feminine and personal hygiene products that will be donated to the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, Kansas Wesleyan noted in a news release.

KWU to host Women in Leadership Conference

Today is Monday, March 21, the 80th day of 2022. There are 285 days left in the year.

These proposed changes were first recommended in the Fire Department Staffing Assessment and Report presented to commissioners on Feb. 28.

As it is currently, the battalion chief position is a salaried position with no possibility of overtime. The hourly rate range is $21.27 to $33.95.

According to information in the city commission meeting packet, the recommended move to a lower pay grade "takes into account the added potential earnings due to the ability to earn overtime" should the entire proposed amendment be approved. The hourly rate range for the S9* pay grade is $20.22 to $32.28.

Commissioners also are being asked to appoint the following two people to fill unexpired terms on the Business Improvement District Advisory Board.

●Consider appointing John Reber to fill the unexpired term of Jenn Reitz until Aug. 31, 2023

●Consider appointing Emily Brandt to fill the unexpired term of Michelle Jensen until Aug. 31, 2024

Other items on the city commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider awarding a bid for the city's ultrathin bonded asphalt surface project to APAC Kansas, Shears Division of Salina in the amount of $965,046.15 with a five-percent construction contingency for a total project authorization not to exceed $1,013,298.46 and authorize the city manager to execute a contract with APAC Kansas, Shears Division of Salina upon fulfillment of all prerequisites under the bid documents.

●Consider approving a resolution accepting and approving a grant agreement with the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation for the 2021 Kansas Moderate Income Housing grant program and authorizing the mayor to execute the grant agreement and associated implementation and administrative documents.

●Consider approving on second reading an ordinance amending the zoning ordinance to add travel center and/or truck stop, short term recreational vehicle parking area accessory to hotel, motel, truck stop or travel plaza and mini-warehouses to the list of conditional uses allowed in the S. Ninth Street Corridor Overlay District. Action on this item was postponed from the March 14 meeting to Monday's meeting so it could be considered by all members of the city commission.

●Consider approving a resolution related to the establishment of a special improvement district in Lakeview Estates Addition No. 2 and authorize the mayor to execute an Improvement District Development Agreement between the city and Stanley C. Byquist.

●Consider approving a resolution authorizing the offering for public sale of general obligation bonds; consider approving an ordinance on first reading that would authorize the issuance and delivery of approximately $8,200,00 principal amount of general obligation internal improvement bonds; and consider authorizing the city manager to enter into an agreement with Stiefel, Nicolaus &amp; Company, Inc., to provide financial advisor services for the City of Salina for the issuance of the 2022 general obligation bonds. If approved, the bonds would retire a portion of the city's General Obligation Temporary Note Series 2021-1, which matures on May 1, 2022, and permanently finance the following projects.

●Consider approving a resolution setting the date for a public hearing to consider whether dangerous structures at 244 E. Diamond Drive, 615 S. Ninth Street, and 619 S. Santa Fe Avenue shall be condemned and ordered demolished or repaired.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to meet in executive session with defense counsel to discuss legal aspects of a suit asserting claims against the city on the basis of allegations of defamation and violation of Kansas common law whistleblower protection and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Pay scheduled  change, bonds among items on city agenda

A pair of brothers from Russell stopped at the Cozy Inn restaurant during the afternoon of March 5, 2010, aiming for some fame.

They announced to owner Steve Howard their intention to break a record of eating 55 Cozy Burgers in 45 minutes. No one knows who owns the record or when it was set at 54.

Cecil Brooks III, 24 at the time and an employee at the Russell Sonic drive-in, devoured 21 of the sliders before bowing out, 11 minutes to the deadline.

His brother, Derrick Williams, 19, then a worker at the Russell McDonald’s, gulped down 22 of the small burgers before bowing out with six minutes to go.

On one occasion since that day, possibly in 2011, a younger man took the challenge and ate 23 Cozy Burgers, Howard said, so the record still stands.

When the last attempt resulted in the contestant’s credit card being denied, a policy change ensued.

“If anybody wants to try, there’s gonna be a 30-dollar cover&nbsp; charge,” Howard said.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday that includes the following counties in our area.

South winds increasing to 20 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, and relative humidity as low as 16 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control, the weather service noted. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday that includes the following counties in our area.

Winds increasing this afternoon to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, and relative humidity as low as 22 percent are forecast.

Again, any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control, the weather service noted. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

NWS issues red flag warnings across the state for Sunday

It's almost time for Match Madness, the annual giving day to benefit the Salina community.

The Greater Salina Community Foundation will host Match Madness on Thursday. The event at the Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. Fifth Street, will include competitions, information, food trucks, and, of course, donations.

On Match Madness day, donations to any of the 88 participating charities with funds at the Greater Salina Community Foundation will be matched up to 50 percent. The list of participating charities can be found online at <a href="http://www.matchmadnessgscf.org">www.matchmadnessgscf.org</a>.

Since the event’s inception in 2012, 5,499 donors have contributed a record-breaking total of $2,178,784.55 to 88 charities. The event's match and bonus grants total $926,819.41 and the total benefit exceeds $3.1 million to the community. 

All donations made on March 24 will go to each charity’s endowed fund held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. These funds are permanently invested to produce a steady stream of income charities can count on every year, which eases the pressure to raise annual funds, according to the community foundation.

Additionally, every gift to a nonprofit’s endowed fund will be matched proportionally up to 50 percent with a cash grant that the non-ptofit can access immediately to meet immediate needs. This year, there are $250,000 in matching funds, thanks to the generosity of private donors.

“This event is a win-win for everyone, and a great example of community collaboration. Donations of all sizes are pooled together to provide long-term support for our charities, and the match given can be used instantly by the charities to meet urgent needs,” said Jessica Martin, executive director of the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

Donors can give in one of the following three ways.

●In-person from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. Fifth Street.

●Online at <a href="http://www.matchmadnessgscf.org">www.matchmadnessgscf.org</a> from midnight to 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

●By mail donations postmarked by March 24 to GSCF, PO Box 2876, Salina, KS 67402-2876.

Match Madness 2022 is scheduled to include the following, according to the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

●Bill Grevas Memorial Nonprofit Free Throw Contest, sponsored by Salina Regional Health Foundation, during which nonprofit representatives will have one minute to shoot free throws for a chance to earn $100 in bonus cash for their organization. Competition starts at 11 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. Come down to the fieldhouse and cheer on your favorite nonprofits.

●BE Wealth Half-Court Shot for Charity, in which nonprofit representatives will attempt to make a shot from half-court, and the winner will receive an extra $1,000 for their organization. Competition starts at 5:30 p.m. Come down to the fieldhouse and cheer on all the nonprofits.

●Food trucks, including Saddle Jack’s BBQ, Food by Bonnie, and Taco’s Food Truck will be serving food from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. outside of the Salina Fieldhouse.

●Nonprofit booths will be set up from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Visit the nonprofit booths and participate in the Greater Salina Community Foundation's Around the World booth contest. Get a stamp at five or more booths and be entered to win a special prize at the end of the event.
