The Smoky View 4-H Club decided on a fair theme suggestion for the Tri-Rivers Fair and Ottawa County Fair. The club had many fair themes to choose from, some of which were “Sunflower Showdown” and “Sew It, Show It, Grow It.” In the end, the club members decided that their fair theme suggestion would be “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams.”&nbsp;

The suggestion will be submitted to the Tri-Rivers Fair Board and the Ottawa County Fair Board by the club’s Central Kansas District (CKD) 4-H Council representatives at the council’s next meeting. The fair boards will consider the club’s suggestion in making a decision about the fair themes for the Tri-Rivers Fair and Ottawa County Fair this year. The club chose its fair theme suggestion at its January club meeting on Sunday, Jan. 16 at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center. Some 4-H members joined virtually.&nbsp;

Kayla Norberg gave a demonstration to the club on how to make gnomes with hot glue, Styrofoam cones, wooden balls, fake fur, and socks.&nbsp;

The Smoky View 4-H Club will be meeting again on Feb. 27 at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;

In other Smoky View 4-H Club news, Smoky View 4-H Club members Acacia Pracht, Maia Pracht, Eian Pracht, Aspen Trautwein, Audrey Trautwein, Adison Trautwein, Kayla Norberg, and Eddie Littich, along with 4-H leader Jodie Norberg, competed in the CKD model meeting competition on Jan. 22. Model meeting is a competition in which different 4-H clubs present a practiced 4-H meeting to a judge. The judge then decides how well each 4-H club did in running its meeting with parliamentary procedure. Normally, 4-H clubs would present to the judge in-person, but the competition was done virtually this year because of COVID-19 concerns. The Smoky View 4-H Club model meeting members recorded their meeting on Zoom from home and the Soderstrom Elementary School in Lindsborg. Then they submitted a video of it for the competition. The club got a blue ribbon for the competition. The team qualified for the regional competition.&nbsp;

ABILENE - Memorial Health System has a new look!

Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene officially affiliated with the Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) family on Jan. 1. In doing so, the marketing departments worked together with an outside design company to create a new logo that would help to show the newly formed team commitment to healthcare, Memorial Health System noted in a news release. 

Lindsborg Community Hospital and Cloud County Health Center in Concordia also are part of the Salina Regional Health Center family.

Memorial Health System recently unveiled the new logo above.

"Memorial Health System had 12 logos with many variations in size and color. Not only is it costly and time consuming for a marketing department to have that many logos when looking at it from an advertising aspect, but it can also be difficult to sell your brand when a lack of cohesiveness exists," Memorial Health System noted in a recent news release. "Many community members do not realize Memorial Health System is not just Memorial Hospital. Several outside entities are part of the health care system as well. Village Manor, Impact Sports &amp; Fitness, Home Health &amp; Hospice of Dickinson County (located in Abilene and Herington), and Frontier Estates are all underneath the health care system."

The next phase will include updating everything with the new logo.

"This process will take time. MHS will plan to do internal changes first. Updating the smaller things, that can be done easily within the MHS marketing department. Bigger changes will happen as time goes on, such as signage and other larger projects that involve more time and several helping hands!" Memorial Health system noted.

Memorial Health System gets new logo to go with SRHC affiliation

Salina police have asked the Saline County Attorney's Office to file a charge of felony cruelty to animals: malicious torture against a 55-year-old Salina resident.

On Jan. 19, officers responded to the 900 block of Choctaw Avenue to assist the Salina Animal Services. 

"On contact with the shelter employees, there was a report that the shelter was taking into custody a four-year-old black and white lab/retriever mix named Molly. There was an allegation that the dog had been abused," the Salina Police Department noted in a news release this morning.

Through a joint investigation between Salina Animal Services and the police, Salina Police detectives were able to establish a probable cause to request a felony cruelty to animals: malicious torture charge. The investigation included interviewing several witnesses, collecting evidentiary items, and reviewing veterinarian records.

According to information from the Salina Police Department, an affidavit was delivered to the Saline County Attorney's Office on Wednesday "for a 55-year-old Salina resident who is the owner of Molly."

"The Salina Police Department wants to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation.  Molly is currently being cared for in a safe and protected location," the department noted.

Police request felony cruelty to animals: malicious torture charge

The Museum Gallery in The Temple is having a special exhibit that opens this evening and you're invited!

Hundreds of beautifully displayed collector stamps from Thad Shamburg's collection will be on display in the Museum Gallery on the first floor of The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue through February. 

Tonight's First Friday at The Temple event is scheduled for 5-7 p.m., during which time you will be able to meet Shamburg. Additionally, Glow Events at The Temple will have a sample Razzberry Kiss signature cocktail and sweet dessert for sale.

For the rest of February, the exhibit will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays.

On Jan. 13 at approximately 8:25 p.m., officers were sent to the 700 block of N. Ninth Street in regard to a vehicle burglary.

An unknown subject had entered vehicle and stolen a wallet containing financial cards, according to the reporting party, who discovered one of the financial cards had been used at three businesses within Salina shortly after the vehicle burglary occurred. Surveillance video from those businesses&nbsp;shows two suspects using the stolen financial cards to make purchases.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about stolen financial cards

A Missouri man was cited after a two-vehicle wreck in central Salina Thursday morning.

Michael Eckert, 35, of Missouri, was southbound on S. Ninth Street in a 1998 Acura TL when he failed to stop for the red light at the W. South Street intersection and collided with an eastbound 2013 Toyota Corolla driven by Tara McMullen, 39, of Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. The collision occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. Thursday.

The impact spun the Acura around and it ended up in the front yard of 400 S. Ninth Street.

McMullen received minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester reported.

Both the Acura and the Corolla had front end damage and were towed from the scene.

According to Forrester, Eckert was cited for failing to stop at a stoplight and no proof of insurance.

The Salina Wedding Fair is Sunday; here's what you need to know

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has awarded $2 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along the state’s most traveled highways.

KDOT received 32 project proposals seeking to use $2 million of the state’s allocation of Volkswagen Mitigation Trust funds dedicated to the installation of Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) stations. KDOT had identified 12 priority locations for these funds to improve public access to charging stations along primary corridors, to which applicants made their case for providing EV services.

“The quality of proposals made the selection process very competitive, and it was clear there is much support across Kansas for electric vehicles and infrastructure,” said Matt Messina, KDOT’s Transportation Planning Manager. “Many applicants proved dedication to EV services beyond the required five-year commitment as they are eager to promote transportation options.”

Staff from KDOT, the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment and a team of consultants evaluated each project proposal and made selections based on criteria provided in a Request for Proposals (RFP) announced in October 2021. Responses were due mid-December 2021.

Each award recipient is responsible for providing 20% of the project cost, bringing the total estimated investment for the seven selected proposals to nearly $2.5 million. Proposals selected to receive an award are identified below.

Abilene location among KDOT electric vehicle charging station awards

My husband and I are 30, and we are on Baby Step 2. He wants to go back to school and become a social worker. He currently makes about $20,000 a year as a teacher’s assistant, and he wants to take out student loans to do this. He already has an associate’s degree, which wouldn’t mean four years of loans, but the idea scares me a lot. I have a good job, so how can I still support him and his desire to further his education without agreeing to go deeper into debt?

So, it’s kind of a situation where&nbsp;you’re&nbsp;working the Baby Steps and he’s not. On top of this, he wants to go into&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-to-income-ratio-calculator" target="_blank">debt</a>&nbsp;to do social work. Does he know what social workers make these days?

This guy obviously has a heart for helping people. That’s a great thing. But I’ve got to believe there are ways to expand his options. Social work is one path, but there are probably several paths he could follow to get involved in what he loves about the idea of social work.

I’m guessing he has a passion for counseling and advocating, too. Finishing a four-year degree would put him in a position where he could potentially move into a guidance counselor role or something along those lines, considering his background. But taking out loans isn’t necessary. He just needs to be patient, and wait a little bit while you two buckle down on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/dave-ramsey-7-baby-steps" target="_blank">Baby Steps</a>&nbsp;and get out of debt. He could get a second job for a while nights or weekends, and then you’d be able to pay off your debt faster&nbsp;and&nbsp;avoid those stupid loans thanks to the cash you set aside. Plus, there are millions of dollars in&nbsp;scholarships out there for traditional&nbsp;and&nbsp;non-traditional students.

Sometimes when people feel stuck in a job, they automatically default to the idea they need a degree. What your husband really needs right now is a clear idea and direction. Then, you determine if a degree is necessary to get there. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not against social work. But I’ve talked to so many people who went six-figures into debt, only to wind up making $38,000 as a social worker for the state. That’s crazy!

You two need to sit down&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/money-marriage-communication-research" target="_blank">together</a>, and talk all this out. Closings and delays due to inclement weather

Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) can count among its accomplishments being a first in the world.

On Wednesday, SRHC became the first hospital in the world to implement Stryker’s SurgiCount+ Safety Sponge System, a process aimed at reducing surgical risk, improving workflow, and reducing stress for surgical staff members, according to information from SRHC.

"SurgiCount+ uses ultra-high radio frequency identification (RFID) technology embedded in each surgical sponge to track its use during surgery. Nurses count-in and count-out each sponge used during a procedure using a RFID reader. If a sponge is missing after a procedure, nurses can use the wireless reader to scan the room and locate it," the hospital noted in a news release this afternoon.

Why is this new and different? According to SRHC, optical scanning technology previously was used to scan bar codes on sponges, which didn't help locate missing sponges.

“The technology provides an added level of security over manual counts, which can have human errors,” said Kelley Drake, Surgical Services nursing director at Salina Regional. “It’s also a step towards achieving the new Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Center of Excellence in Surgical Safety, which we are striving for.”

Salina Regional has implemented the technology for use in all of its operating rooms, Cardiac Cath Lab, and Labor and Delivery Department, the hospital noted. 

"Major surgeries like heart bypass and trauma surgeries can use up to 100 sponges in each surgery. Counting out and locating all of the sponges used during a surgery is important. Retained sponges, while rare, can lead to adverse patient outcomes. For this reason, accurate sponge counting has always been a critical component to surgical safety," SRHC reported.

“We’re excited to be a leader in using this advanced technology,” Drake said.

According to SRHC, a number of hospitals in the United States are converting to the new SurgiCount+ system in the coming months. 

"Advances in the technology are also planned for release in the upcoming months that will allow the device to optically measure blood loss, which will help minimize manual calculating errors," the hospital noted.

Cornerstone Classical School's celebration of Kansas Day last week included a message from Mary Jean Eisenhower.

The granddaughter of the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower shared personal memories of her grandfather and told about his historic careers as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe and the 34th President of the United States.

During the morning presentation, Grade One recited selections from the Declaration of Independence and Grade Three recited a portion of Lincoln’s Peoria Speech on the Kansas-Nebraska Act. 

Additionally, Cornerstone students researched famous Kansans or state symbols and presented short speeches for the school’s Kansas Museum. Famous Kansans included Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Dole, and Joan Finney.

After the Kansas museum and a barbecue lunch, students visited living history stations that included candle making, soap making, rag doll crafting making, sewing, archery, lassoing, coffee bean grinding, butter churning, and square dancing. 

Cornerstone Classical School is a private, Christian, preschool three through grade 12 school based on the classical model of teaching. It is located at 830 S. Ninth Street in Salina. The school's goal is to produce students who become the most respected opinion-makers, church, business, and organizational leaders, government authorities and educators of the 21st century.

HERINGTON - A 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck west of the north side of Herington Wednesday evening.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at 9:59 p.m. Wednesday. It was centered just east of the Trail Road/600 Avenue intersection.

Small earthquake strikes near Herington Wednesday night

BROOKVILLE - An Ellsworth man was injured in a single-vehicle rollover accident a few miles east of Brookville on Kansas Highway 140 (K-140) Wednesday afternoon.

Sidney Lloyd, 41, of Ellsworth, was eastbound on K-140 east of Reese Road just before 2 p.m. Wednesday when his 2007 Jeep Liberty hit a snow patch and he lost control of the vehicle, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The Liberty went off the roadway, rolled once, and came to rest on its wheels.

Lloyd complained of neck pain but declined EMS transport to Salina Regional Health Center, instead opting to go there by personal vehicle, according to Soldan.

The Liberty was "pretty well destroyed," Soldan said.

Additionally, Soldan said there were several vehicle slide-offs and vehicles that became stuck throughout the county because of the storm Wednesday.

Jeep rollover on K-140 Wednesday injures Ellsworth man

A local man was arrested late Wednesday afternoon after he was found inside a south Salina residence that wasn't his.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 2500 block of Highland Avenue at approximately 5:40 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a burglary in progress, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Two persons, a 48-year-old female and a 15-year-old male were in the basement of the residence when they heard someone attempting to break in. While officers were enroute to the location, it was reported that the person was inside the residence and the reporting parties were hiding in the basement.

According to Forrester, officers entered the residence and found Justin Stonebraker, 26, of Salina, on the floor. Forrester reported that Stonebraker was highly intoxicated. 

The people hiding in the basement did not know Stonebraker, he added.

The front door of the residence had been kicked in, causing approximately $100 in damage.

Stonebraker was arrested on the requested charges of trespassing and criminal damage to property, Forrester reported.

Believe it or not, creating a solid resumé is&nbsp;just&nbsp;as important as prepping for your job interview. Your resumé is your chance to make a strong first impression on the recruiter. But before you get too freaked out, know this: Building the perfect resumé is actually pretty simple. Once you’ve read these tips, you’ll be ready to move forward into the job search with confidence.

Do you know how much time a recruiter spends looking at your resumé on the first go-around? Less than 10 seconds. If they have to go through pages of your accomplishments and experience, this party could be over before it even starts. Keep things simple, relevant and to the point.

Try including a link to an online portfolio or professional website if you have one. That way, you’ll be able to showcase more of your work without taking up space on your resumé.

3. Make sure your contact info is professional

Nobody wants to send an email to sk8rboi2002. Just a normal, boring email account with your first and last name will get the job done. Don’t forget to include your phone number.

Double-check all your social media accounts to make sure they’re recruiter-friendly, especially if you include any of your social media handles on your resumé. But even those should only be on your resumé if they’re relevant to the position.

It used to be trendy to put a paragraph about yourself at the top of your resumé, but it’s okay to let that trend die. Remember, we’re keeping this relevant and to the point.

Be strategic about putting your picture on your resumé. It makes sense to include one if you’re applying for a modeling or acting job, but accounting? Nope.

Recruiters post job descriptions for a reason. They want to be clear and specific about what qualities and skills they need. Look for those buzzwords and find ways to work them into your resumé.

8. Tweak your resumé for each role

It might sound like a lot of work to tailor your resumé to each job application, but the effort will pay off. By doing this, recruiters will know you took time to read all the info and your interest in their company is serious.

This is a no-brainer, but enough people have lied on job applications to make it worth mentioning. Don’t say you know someone at the company if you’ve never talked to them. Don’t say you know how to use Excel and PowerPoint if you don’t. Get it? Don’t lie!

Put yourself in the recruiter’s position. What would you be looking for? You’d probably want something that’s clear and easy on the eyes:

●Use a professional font like Times New Roman, Helvetica, Arial, or Calibri.

●Keep your headers simple, and use concise bullet points.

●Don’t use too many variations in font size, color, and style.

What if the language in your resumé was just a little more engaging? Here are a few active and interesting words to use where it makes sense:

Most astute recruiters don’t care&nbsp;where&nbsp;you went to school, as long as you’re educated in your field. And don’t forget to include any other training or educational courses that are relevant to the job you want.

On Feb. 3, 1943, during World War II, the U.S. transport ship SS Dorchester, which was carrying troops to Greenland, sank after being hit by a German torpedo in the Labrador Sea; of the more than 900 men aboard, only some 230 survived. (Four Army chaplains on board gave away their life jackets to save others and went down with the ship.)
