My Name Is Not Mom, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

The 2.1 magnitude quake struck at 9:23 p.m. Saturday and was just west of S. Niles Road between E. Hedberg Road and E. Assaria Road, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

“True Grit.” That classic Hollywood western movie was remade in 2010. The characters in the film were equipped with authentic leather holsters, gunbelts and saddles – hand-made by a craftsman located in rural Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

David Carrico is the founder and owner of Carrico Leatherworks, the business that produced these period leather items for the film industry and others. He operates the business from his home place near Edna, where he was born and raised. He is the fourth generation on the family farm. Son Denton, a K-State student, is the fifth.&nbsp;

“My dad made me a leather belt when I was a kid,” David said. He grew up cowboying and working cattle. “I learned to make these things out of leather because I couldn’t afford to buy them,” David said with a smile.&nbsp;

He found he enjoyed making leather goods. People who saw his products would often ask if he could make them one like it, too.&nbsp;

David went to Coffeyville Community College where he took a living history class. He became fascinated by American history, connected with some Civil War re-enactors, and joined in re-enactments himself. He then applied his leather-working skills to make authentic period pieces such as belts, holsters, and saddles that actors could use. He also met and married his wife Deena, a Pittsburg State grad who is now a teacher.&nbsp;

David went on to K-State where he earned a degree in agricultural education. At the time of graduation, there were no teaching jobs open so he decided to continue to do leatherwork.&nbsp;

“I told my wife that, if this didn’t work out, I’d get a real job,” David said. “I haven’t had to get a real job yet.”&nbsp;

David started making more of the authentic Cavalry leather goods. “We used to go around to re-enactments and set up a table to sell our handmade period gear,” David said. “Now, with the Internet, we don’t even have to go to those” because buyers purchase his products online.&nbsp;

David has produced multiple items for the film industry.&nbsp;

For movies set in the Civil War era, Civil War re-enactments make great content for filming because the participants are already authentically dressed. “You have a camera-ready man and a camera-ready horse,” David said. When he participated in those filmed re-enactments, David would visit with the prop crew to get ideas. He also visited Fort Riley’s cavalry museum and the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka to gather authentic designs.&nbsp;

Today, Carrico Leatherworks specializes in authentic Cavalry equipment and old west gear. David makes McLellan and Hope saddles, military belts and holsters, western belts and holsters, and horse and saddle accoutrements. He recently purchased dies, patterns, and saddle components from the famous F. A. Meanea Company of Cheyenne, Wyoming, which made products for Buffalo Bill Cody, Teddy Roosevelt and Charles M. Russell, among others.&nbsp;

“I don’t build modern saddles because I’m so busy with the period stuff,” David said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Some customers are re-enactors, some are Hollywood film producers, and some simply want authentic period cowboy gear. He also rents items for Hollywood movies.&nbsp;

David’s handmade leather goods have been included in films such as&nbsp;News of the World&nbsp;with Tom Hanks;&nbsp;The Son&nbsp;with Pierce Brosnan;&nbsp;The Magnificent Seven&nbsp;with Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt; and&nbsp;True Grit&nbsp;remake with Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.&nbsp;

For the movie&nbsp;Hostiles&nbsp;starring Christian Bale, David was hired as a Cavalry advisor to teach the actors how to ride like Cavalry soldiers. He’s worked with producers Bill Kurtis and Ron Howard. His products were even included in the Japanese-themed movie&nbsp;The Last Samurai&nbsp;with Tom Cruise.&nbsp;

Carrico Leatherworks has shipped products across the U.S. and beyond. It’s an impressive record for a business located in the rural community of Edna, population 442 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)&nbsp;recently announced that it is investing $22,965,600 to build and improve critical community facilities in 15 communities. 

This infrastructure funding will increase access to health care and public safety while spurring community development and building sound infrastructure for people living in rural communities.

These are the Kansas projects receiving financial assistance:

●A&nbsp;$475,000 loan, along with a contribution from the applicant, will assist in completing street improvements, curb, guttering and storm water grading within the city of&nbsp;Cottonwood Falls. Streets have warped cross sections, reduced storm water capacity and irregular profiles resulting in potholes and ponding. This project will address the most immediate street needs through patching, replacement and storm sewer installation. The project includes approximately 13,850 square yards of asphalt milling, 2,710 tons of hot mix asphalt surface replacement, 3,510 square yards of concrete pavement, 31,200 square yards of chip and seal, 3,350 feet of sidewalk, and storm water grading and improvements.

●A&nbsp;$14,600 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing and installing&nbsp;a&nbsp;boiler system for the&nbsp;Hodgeman&nbsp;County Courthouse. The courthouse&nbsp;was built in 1929 and is on both the Kansas Historic Register and the National Historic Register. The new system will come with a one-year warranty and the county has entered a contract for continued maintenance, eliminating emergency costs of parts and labor.

●A&nbsp;$98,300 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing and installing heating and air conditioning systems and new lighting in the junior and senior high school facilities in&nbsp;Burlingame. Installation will include flat panel LED lights, to improve lighting quality and efficiency, and replacement of the entire heating and air conditioning system with a variant refrigerant flow zoning system.

●A&nbsp;$175,000 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant, will rebuild and repair two existing boiler units and address a safety issue of a third at the&nbsp;Neosho&nbsp;Memorial Regional Medical Center. Two boilers must be repaired to prevent failure and possible hospital closure. Additional work to be completed includes new diesel pumps, new boiler skins and re-insulating two boilers. A third boiler will be repaired. This project will add an additional 20-year lifespan to the medical center's power infrastructure.

●A&nbsp;$93,400 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in&nbsp;replacing a fire engine. Currently, southeast&nbsp;Rush County, including the town of Timken, is serviced by an old fire engine requiring a great deal of maintenance. Reliability of the truck in an emergency is questionable. The purchase of a new Quick Attack Fire Body truck will provide updated equipment to the volunteer firefighters.

●A&nbsp;$90,600 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in renovating a facility for the City of&nbsp;Moundridge&nbsp;public library. The existing library is housed in a building that was constructed in 1929. The city's Public Building Commission purchased a 4,500 square foot facility, built in 1979, and would need interior renovations before becoming the city's new public library. The new facility will be Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and include accessible shelving, tables, chairs and other furnishings. The new facility will have interactive child and technology areas. The facility will have study spaces, community room and an outdoor classroom.

●A&nbsp;$5,200 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing a replacement sanitation truck for the waste department in the City of&nbsp;Sharon. The city's&nbsp;current truck, a 1999 GMC model, has reached the end of its useful life and is requiring weekly repairs and maintenance. The new truck is a&nbsp;2006 International model.

●A&nbsp;$26,400 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing a previously owned 2012 Ford F-450 4X4 Type 1 Wheeled Coach Ambulance for the&nbsp;Sedan&nbsp;area Emergency Medical Service. The new ambulance will replace a 1997 model. The old ambulance is not dependable and requires upgrades that are cost-prohibitive to keep it in service.

●A&nbsp;$12,000 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing a previously owned fire engine for the City of&nbsp;Sedgwick. This vehicle will replace a 1991 model with a water leak in its holding tank. The current truck does not meet testing standards leaving only one fully functional truck. The city is purchasing a 2009 LaFrance with only 600 hours of use.

●A&nbsp;$15,900 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist the City of&nbsp;Cawker City&nbsp;in replacing the roof on their fire station. The existing roof leaks, causing damage to the structure of the building.

●A&nbsp;$34,500 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing a new fully equipped vehicle for the City of&nbsp;Norton's Law Enforcement Department. This vehicle will replace an older vehicle with maintenance issues and outdated equipment. The new vehicle will come fully equipped with items that will meet the current needs of the department.

●A&nbsp;$2,200 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing and installing a new heating and air conditioning unit for the senior center in&nbsp;Burdett. This facility's current heating and air conditioning system is failing and has become financially more difficult to maintain. The facility provides the area's aging population with meals, services and activities for a better quality of life in the community.

●A&nbsp;$50,000 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing a new Jetter Vac truck for the City of&nbsp;Belleville. This will replace an existing, 18-year-old truck. This truck is used by multiple city departments and is critical for cleaning sewers and vacuuming wastewater. The new truck will hold 1,300 gallons of waste or water, has a ten-foot aluminum telescoping boom, debris tank and other features.

●A&nbsp;$35,500 grant, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will assist in purchasing equipment for the&nbsp;Neodesha&nbsp;Law Enforcement Department. Offices are currently housed in a temporary storage area at the city hall with evidence stored in a shipping container. The container is not climate-controlled, and evidence is deteriorating due to the conditions. Funds will be used to purchase security cameras, evidence equipment and office equipment.

●A&nbsp;$19,869,000 direct loan&nbsp;and a&nbsp;$1,968,000 guaranteed loan&nbsp;through Western Alliance Business Trust, along with a contribution from the applicant,&nbsp;will construct a critical access hospital facility in&nbsp;Caldwell. Kansas State University students earn fall 2021 semester honors

The next commodities distribution for Saline County residents is coming up later this month.

The drive-through distribution is scheduled for 9-10:30 a.m. Feb. 16 at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park. Please wear a facemask when talking with the distribution volunteers.

According to information from the volunteer organizers, the food items to be distributed are the same as they were in January. Food items to be distributed include green beans, grape juice, pistachios, dried eggs, mac and cheese, peanut butter, frozen ground beef, frozen tortillas, dried cranberries, and canned peas.

To be eligible for the commodities distribution, a single person must have a monthly income of $1,396 or less. For each additional family member, add $492 to that monthly income amount.

ABILENE - Emerging scholars are invited to submit a presentation abstract as a featured speaker during the annual D-Day Commemorative Symposium. 

The Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower Presidential Libraries seek submissions from emerging scholars to be a featured speaker during the virtual symposium held the first week of June.&nbsp;The symposium focuses on specialized topics related to the Allied effort in World War II.

The 2022 theme emerges from famed World War II reporter Ernie Pyle’s work Here Is Your War. This symposium seeks to examine the reporting of the war from the front, news of home to those fighting, and war propaganda that helped unite the two.&nbsp;

Our goal is to enhance the future of WWII scholarship by examining lesser-known topics and showcasing new and emerging scholars.&nbsp;Each program is scheduled for one hour. The guest speaker will present his/her topic for approximately 40 minutes, allowing time for audience participation and questions at the end. Each program wraps up with a Scholar Spotlight where we get to know a little bit more about each of these up and coming scholars.

Submission packets should include the presentation abstract, applicant contact information, education status, and academic goals summary. WWII Emerging Scholars Symposium seeks speaker proposals

McPHERSON – One of the country’s premier chamber music ensembles, the American Brass Quintet, is scheduled to perform at McPherson College next week as part of the Fern Lingenfelter Artists Series.

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.&nbsp; Monday in Brown Auditorium. The concert is open to the public at no charge.&nbsp;McPherson College continues to require masks for all indoor campus events.

The American Brass Quintet will also be teaching a master class on Monday at 1 p.m. in Brown Auditorium. Students from McPherson College and all area high school band students are encouraged to participate. The class is free.

Saline County Health Department releases January COVID report

The nation’s founders didn’t have access to today’s social media – but what if they had?

Of course, they took good advantage of the media that they did have, from letters to printed newspapers and journals. They spoke loudly to their fellow citizens, using crowds on the village green instead of speaking through the “village screen” now available worldwide.

Not everything was different. They faced what we might call “colonial terms of service,” rules like those imposed today by social media platforms that govern what can be said and how we can say it. For example, you could not say anything bad about the king, whether it was true or false.

One big difference: Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton and others faced government regulations and sanctions for what they said or wrote through any medium because the First Amendment was not ratified until 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights.

Today we agree to terms of service rules to use social media platforms, an agreement outside the First Amendment’s free speech protection. Social media companies are private entities and have their own rights under the First Amendment, which prevents – for now, at least – government control or censorship over content on their sites.

There’s no imagination needed in some cases to take the work of the Founders right into today’s social media structure.&nbsp;Patrick Henry’s&nbsp;1775 declaration&nbsp;“Give me liberty or give me death”&nbsp;works as effectively today as a tweet as it did nearly 250 years ago in rousing Virginians to send troops to support the American revolution.

Consider the impact in any medium of the Declaration of Independence’s statement that,&nbsp;“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Of course, in today’s post, that same phrase might look like this: “👨 and 👩are =, endowed with the right to 🧬,🗽and the pursuit of 😊.”

There’s great debate today across the political spectrum on whether government should step in to regulate social media. Some would block platforms from banning anyone or provide special protections for political candidates or elected officeholders. Others would mandate increased efforts to combat misinformation or make social media companies financially liable for any harm caused by what others post.

If such rules and regulations were in effect for the Founders, would Twitter have blocked – perhaps only temporarily – two future presidents for the bitter exchanges between the campaigns of&nbsp;John Adams&nbsp;and&nbsp;Thomas Jefferson&nbsp;during the 1796 presidential election?

One report has it that Adams was labeled “a fool, a hypocrite, a criminal, and a tyrant,” while others called him “a syphilitic, royalist bastard.” Jefferson was called “a weakling, an atheist, a libertine, and a coward,” with some critics describing him as a “half-breed.” One account says that “even&nbsp;Martha Washington&nbsp;succumbed … telling a clergyman that Jefferson was ‘one of the most detestable of mankind’.”

While Twitter’s terms of service do provide wide scope for personal comments, Adams or Jefferson today might have filed a complaint about “long term harassment,” something the social media giant says might trigger a ban on future posts.

They also could sue for defamation, but the courts generally consider even the most spiteful or vulgar opinion — particularly when it’s political speech — to be protected by the First Amendment.

TAKING “ONLINE” THREATS OFFLINE: A less-judicious way — and illegal in most states, even then — of settling such “online” disputes would be how Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton settled their personal attacks: pistols at dawn. But let’s remember how badly that option turned out: Hamilton was mortally wounded in the duel and Burr’s reputation was damaged beyond repair.

And what of Jefferson’s words in a letter endorsing the American revolution:&nbsp;“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants”? As a tweet today, perhaps around the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2022/01/05/when-did-the-jan-6-insurrection-move-past-the-first-amendment/" target="_blank">Jan. 6 insurrectionist attack</a>&nbsp;on the U.S. Capitol, would that call to action run afoul of Silicon Valley rules – and perhaps lead to an FBI knock on a Monticello door? Such a phrase, depending on the context, could be judged a “true threat” and not protected speech.

The First Amendment provides us with great protection from government interference for what we say and write, particularly on political issues or matters of public interest. As we deal with the societal impact of social media — still a relatively new way of speaking — we should remember that the nation’s founders created those protections to allow for what the U.S. Supreme Court has called “robust and vigorous” debate. In 2002, Justice&nbsp;Anthony Kennedy&nbsp;wrote, “The right to think is the beginning of freedom, and speech must be protected from the government because speech is the beginning of thought.”

We ought to think about those words – and why the Founders and the nation ratified the First Amendment’s five freedoms during a period of great division and debate not unlike today – in considering how and if to further regulate social media and other means of communication.

As&nbsp;Benjamin Franklin&nbsp;said (and would no doubt have posted):&nbsp;“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Others would mandate increased efforts to combat misinformation or make social media companies financially liable for any harm caused by what others post.If such rules and regulations were in effect for the Founders, would Twitter have blocked – perhaps only temporarily – two future presidents for the bitter exchanges between the campaigns of&nbsp;John Adams&nbsp;and&nbsp;Thomas Jefferson&nbsp;during the 1796 presidential election?One report has it that Adams was labeled “a fool, a hypocrite, a criminal, and a tyrant,” while others called him “a syphilitic, royalist bastard.” Jefferson was called “a weakling, an atheist, a libertine, and a coward,” with some critics describing him as a “half-breed.” One account says that “even&nbsp;Martha Washington&nbsp;succumbed … telling a clergyman that Jefferson was ‘one of the most detestable of mankind’.”While Twitter’s terms of service do provide wide scope for personal comments, Adams or Jefferson today might have filed a complaint about “long term harassment,” something the social media giant says might trigger a ban on future posts.They also could sue for defamation, but the courts generally consider even the most spiteful or vulgar opinion — particularly when it’s political speech — to be protected by the First Amendment.TAKING “ONLINE” THREATS OFFLINE: A less-judicious way — and illegal in most states, even then — of settling such “online” disputes would be how Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton settled their personal attacks: pistols at dawn. But let’s remember how badly that option turned out: Hamilton was mortally wounded in the duel and Burr’s reputation was damaged beyond repair.And what of Jefferson’s words in a letter endorsing the American revolution:&nbsp;“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants”? As a tweet today, perhaps around the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2022/01/05/when-did-the-jan-6-insurrection-move-past-the-first-amendment/" target="_blank">Jan. 6 insurrectionist attack</a>&nbsp;on the U.S. Capitol, would that call to action run afoul of Silicon Valley rules – and perhaps lead to an FBI knock on a Monticello door? Such a phrase, depending on the context, could be judged a “true threat” and not protected speech.The First Amendment provides us with great protection from government interference for what we say and write, particularly on political issues or matters of public interest. As we deal with the societal impact of social media — still a relatively new way of speaking — we should remember that the nation’s founders created those protections to allow for what the U.S. Supreme Court has called “robust and vigorous” debate.
