Stein brothers to return to hometown for Salina Strings concert Thursday

LINDSBORG - Works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky will be featured in the upcoming concert by the Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley.

The ensemble is scheduled to perform two concerts on Sunday: at 4 and 6 p.m. The concerts will be in the Swedish Pavilion of the Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum.

●There have been 59 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Saline County since our last update.

Saline County: 1 additional death, 59 new COVID-19 cases

Among the many items on the county agenda is a presentation by Lauren Driscoll, City of Salina director of development services. Driscoll is scheduled to provide a City of Salina housing update.

Commissioners also are scheduled to hear an update from Jason Tiller, Saline County Health Department director. 

Tiller noted in his report in the commission meeting packet that an omicron-fueled COVID surge resulted in more than 3,400 cases and 11 deaths in January. 

"We have also begun to take steps to move from pandemic to endemic with the ending of contact tracing in mid-January. On February 1, we, along with about 60% of the other counties began to transition case investigation to KDHE," Tiller noted in is written report.

While monitoring of the county's COVID situation will continue, Tiller reported that the department plans to continue demobilizing the county's COVID response. Such demobilization would include:

●Continue to transition COVID case investigations to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

●Close out open records and documentation.

●Scale back the COVID reporting and dashboard.

Tiller also is scheduled to discuss budget, WIC, childcare licensing, and home health items.

Other items on the county commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider a request from community corrections for a remodel of the pre-trial area.

●Consider a request from emergency management to submit four applications for the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant for 2022.

●Consider a request from the road and bridge department to replace an excavator that burned late last year.

●Consider a request for a change order for the Livestock and Expo Center to account for $3,410 in additional charges for electrical work in Ag Hall and Barn 1, should those proposed changes be deemed necessary.

Housing, health department updates among county agenda items

JEWELL COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating after a Jewell County Sheriff’s deputy was found deceased inside his home in Mankato, Kansas.

The Jewell County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance on Monday, Feb. 7, at approximately 2:40 a.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded overnight to investigate.

The investigation indicates that early Monday morning at around 2:05 a.m. and 2:15 a.m., two calls were made to the Jewell County Sheriff’s Office from different subjects inside a home at 507 E. Madison in Mankato. Both calls requested police assistance due to a domestic incident in progress. When the responding deputy arrived at the home, he discovered that 27-year-old Colton Koch, of Mankato, had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Deputy Koch served at the Jewell County Sheriff’s Office for approximately 2 1/2 years.

A teen boy who reported himself in connection with burglary in west-central Salina now faces multiple requested charges in the case.

A 68-year-old Salina man told police that his brother-in-law had been keeping an eye on his property in the 800 block of Windsor Drive while he was away. On Sunday, the brother-in-law informed him that his 2012 Chevrolet Traverse was missing from the driveway, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. No one had permission to drive the vehicle.

Additionally, it was discovered that firearms had been taken from a gunsafe in the residence. It is believed that entry was gained through a pet door.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. Sunday, police received a phone call from a 14-year-old boy who said he knew where the vehicle and guns were, Forrester noted.

The vehicle, which was undamaged, was located at Indian Rock Park. Officers responded to the teen's residence where they recovered multiple rounds of ammunition, gun accessories, a Cugir AK-47 style rifle, a Century Arms Tantal AK-47 style rifle, and a Ruger 10-22 rifle, Forrester reported. Total value of the items stolen was estimated at $19,000.

The boy was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

Teen faces requested charges after reporting location of stolen items

Some parents in the Salina school district want a book removed from high school libraries, citing sexually explicit passages that they say are not appropriate for young readers.

The book “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” by nonbinary author and activist&nbsp;<a href="https://iamgmjohnson.com/" target="_blank">George M. Johnson</a>, bills itself as a “memoir-manifesto” intended for adolescent readers. It&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/education/2021-10-12/shawnee-mission-weighs-policy-change-after-parents-raise-concerns-about-books-descriptions-of-sex" target="_blank">came under fire</a>&nbsp;in the Shawnee Mission school district last fall and has been&nbsp;<a href="https://flaglerlive.com/170745/books-returned-withheld/" target="_blank">removed from school libraries</a>&nbsp;or classrooms in several states.

Chad Farber, pastor of Central Baptist Church in Salina, submitted one of two requests to review the book on Jan. 25.

In his request to district officials, Farber says the book contains “pornographic, lude (sic), and obscene content described in great detail” and that “this material could be used by some to experiment w/anal sex on other students (and) groom some to be molested by predators.”

Another parent, Jessica A. Henton, filed a request the same day to review “All Boys Aren’t Blue.”

“While, to my understanding, there is great educational content in the rest of the book, the obscene (and) descriptive text about ‘sex’ has no place on school library shelves,” Henton wrote.

District officials say the book is being reviewed by a school-level committee that includes a principal, librarian, teachers and parents. The Salina school board is expected to hear from people on both sides of the debate during its meeting Tuesday.

The case reflects a national trend that has school districts trying to balance parental outrage with students’ access to certain books. In recent months, dozens of books have been&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-11-10/goddard-school-district-reverses-decision-to-pull-library-books" target="_blank">challenged by parents and community members</a>&nbsp;who contend that they’re sexually explicit or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/calls-to-ban-books-by-black-authors-are-increasing-amid-critical-race-theory-debates/2021/09" target="_blank">promote critical race theory</a>.

<a href="https://pen.org/user/james-tager/" target="_blank">James Tager</a>, research director for the free expression group PEN America, has tracked book challenges since 2016 and says the number and intensity of challenges is increasing dramatically. But the targets are largely the same.

“Most of the books have to do with the presentation of diverse viewpoints, which is to say that they feature characters or they're written by people of color,” Tager said.

Challenges focused on obscenity tend to target books by LGBTQ authors, he said.

“Whenever these arguments are raised, I hardly ever see an effort to evaluate this against the literary and educational merit of the book,” he said. “There’s a focus on a few passages or a few parts rather than on the book in and of itself.”

In an author’s note at the start of “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” Johnson acknowledges that his book features provocative and potentially controversial material.

“As heavy as these subjects may be, it is necessary that they are not only told, but also read by teens who may have to navigate many of these same experiences in their own lives,” Johnson writes.

“This book will touch on sexual assault (including molestation), loss of virginity, homophobia, racism, and anti-Blackness. These discussions at times may be a bit graphic, but nonetheless they are experiences that many reading this book will encounter or have already encountered. And I want those readers to be seen and heard in these pages.”

Both people who filed complaints in Salina said they had not read “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” but saw portions of the book shared on social media.

Parent groups have raised issues about a four-page passage near the end of the book. In a chapter titled “Losing My Virginity Twice,” Johnson relates a consensual homosexual encounter in detail, including oral sex, masturbation and intercourse.

Rodney Penn, a Salina father and founder of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/990859254309004/" target="_blank">Kansas Parents Involved in Education</a>, said books containing explicit material should be removed from school libraries or labeled as explicit, like movies and music, and kept in a section that requires parental consent before students can check them out.

“We have statutes in the state of Kansas that talk about how a school district must monitor and protect kids from internet-based obscenities. But what about print obscenities?” Penn said.

Kansas law prohibits the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li_2012/b2011_12/statute/021_000_0000_chapter/021_064_0000_article/021_064_0001_section/021_064_0001_k/#:~:text=2012%20Statute&amp;text=(b)%20Promoting%20obscenity%20to%20minors,the%20age%20of%2018%20years" target="_blank">promotion of obscenity to minors</a>. But the law exempts “institutions having scientific, educational or governmental justification,” such as schools, universities and public libraries.

A school district in North Kansas City, Mo., pulled “All Boys Aren’t Blue” and another LGBTQ-themed title, “Fun Home,” from high school shelves last October but&nbsp;<a href="https://fox4kc.com/news/education/north-kansas-city-school-district-returning-lgbtq-books-to-shelves-after-pushback/#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20North%20Kansas%20City%20School%20District,said%20it%20was%20sent%20Friday." target="_blank">returned them</a>&nbsp;after students petitioned to keep the books.

“All Boys Aren’t Blue” was on a list of books briefly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-11-10/goddard-school-district-reverses-decision-to-pull-library-books" target="_blank">pulled from circulation</a>&nbsp;at school libraries in Goddard in November. The district&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-11-10/goddard-school-district-reverses-decision-to-pull-library-books" target="_blank">reversed its decision</a>&nbsp;after receiving national pushback from authors and free-speech advocates.

Chris Field, a former Salina teacher who ran unsuccessfully for school board in November, said he’s disturbed by challenges that target materials dealing with race, gender and sexuality. He said libraries need diverse materials to help students navigate real-life experiences.

“To be able to find books that they can identify with and know that other people in the world are struggling with these issues also. … That’s got to be comforting to these children,” he said.

Salina parents want LGBTQ memoir removed from school libraries

A local man was taken to Salina Regional Health Center after a single-vehicle rollover Friday morning east of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a gray 2005 Ford Escape appeared to have been eastbound on E. Crawford Street when it went off the north side of the roadway and rolled multiple times approximately 200 feet east of the intersection with S. Cunningham Road. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:47 a.m. Friday.

A passer by came upon the car and found Tercero Williams, 41, of Salina, unconscious or asleep in the backseat of the vehicle, Soldan said. 

Williams appeared to have cuts from the wreck. Soldan said William wouldn't open his eyes, though he did talk to emergency responders. He was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.

Soldan noted that there were signs of impairment. He said the sheriff's office is awaiting the results of tests to determine what sort of impairment there might have been.

 </figure>By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostA local man was taken to Salina Regional Health Center after a single-vehicle rollover Friday morning east of Salina.Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a gray 2005 Ford Escape appeared to have been eastbound on E. Crawford Street when it went off the north side of the roadway and rolled multiple times approximately 200 feet east of the intersection with S. Cunningham Road. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:47 a.m. Friday.<figure>

 </figure>A passer by came upon the car and found Tercero Williams, 41, of Salina, unconscious or asleep in the backseat of the vehicle, Soldan said. Williams appeared to have cuts from the wreck. Soldan said William wouldn't open his eyes, though he did talk to emergency responders. He was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.Soldan noted that there were signs of impairment. He said the sheriff's office is awaiting the results of tests to determine what sort of impairment there might have been.

Designer purse, footwear stolen from unlocked pickup

A local woman was cited after a three vehicle wreck Friday afternoon in southeast Salina.

Alice Harris, 78, of Salina, was southbound on S. Ohio Street in a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan when she attempted to turn left onto Albert Avenue and turned in front of a northbound 2017 Ford Edge driven by Cheryl Campbell, 61, of Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. The collision occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. Friday.

The impact of the collision spun the Grand Caravan around and into a westbound 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup that was stopped in traffic. The pickup was driven by Slade Spratien, 40, of Salina.

Harris suffered minor injuries but refused treatment, Forrester noted. Campbell had minor injuries from the airbag deployment and was taken to Salina Regional Health Center by family.

The Grand Caravan had damage to both sides and was towed from the scene. The Edge had front-end damage and also was towed from the scene, Forrester reported. The Ram had front-end damage, but was removed by the driver.

Harris was cited for failure to yield a left-hand turn, according to Forrester.

Salina woman cited after three-vehicle wreck

Millions of television viewers are watching the winter Olympics held in Beijing. But had it been held anywhere else on earth at this time, it would very likely become a superspreader event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

It is important to stop and realize why Beijing offers a safer venue at a time when this most contagious omicron variant is still sweeping the world.

The number of cumulative deaths per million population in China is just three. For little New Zealand that has long isolated itself from the rest of the world, that number is eleven.&nbsp;&nbsp;For some other East Asian countries with a Confucian-heritage ethic that is infused with concern for others, the cumulative deaths per million are 132 (South Korea) and 150 (Japan). On the other end of this scale, the cumulative deaths per million in individualistic Western nations are alarming: Brazil (2,982), United States (2,692), Mexico (2,406) and the European Union (2,150).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nearly all of China’s coronavirus deaths occurred in early 2020, before any vaccine was available. They were able to stop the initial epidemic by curtailing spread by staying at home or inside university walls, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;Their general term “quarantine” for isolating an infected person is “gé lí” [隔离].&nbsp;Along with South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, they used a cell phone app to alert anyone who tested positive with a red code to go home and stay in quarantine. Anyone whose phone came in close contact with such a person’s cell phone in the prior days got a yellow code to also go home and isolate. Other folks’ cell phone app remained coded green.

When infections were surging, it became necessary to curtail all local travel and to stay-in-place to break the chain of transmission. This strategy that many Western countries call “lockdown” is fēng bi guǎn kong&nbsp;[封闭管控].&nbsp;&nbsp;Schools are considered very important in East Asia. K-12 schools usually have a brick fence around them. Universities have a wall surrounding them, with only a few gates that are easily closed.&nbsp;Lockdown of a school is&nbsp;“fēng xiào” [封校]. In February 2020, the sealing off and isolation of the city of Wuhan, and the recent brief lockdown of Xi’an is&nbsp;“fēng&nbsp;chéng”&nbsp;[封城] where the character&nbsp;“chéng” means “city.”

Although China had brought COVID-19 transmission to a halt in mid-2020, they faced continued import of new cases and strains across their borders with Siberia, North Korea and western Xinjiang, as well as through the Beijing airport. China was therefore in the forefront of testing and producing vaccines. SinoVac and SinoPharm were WHO-approved. They also now have CanSino and Anhui Zhife vaccines. The Global Commission for Post-Pandemic Policy keeps records on vaccine production. About half of worldwide production of COVID vaccines is by China (4,907 million) followed by the European Union (2,213 million), India (1,606 million) and the United States (992 million).

China had also tested its vaccines for use with children and began vaccination of those above age two long before the U.S. Since our youngest are yet to be vaccinated, vaccination rates will not reach 100 percent. According to Our World in Data, as of Jan. 31, the percent of persons having received two vaccinations varies substantially: China (86%), Japan (79%), Vietnam (73%), Germany (73%), and the United States (64%).

However, many countries now consider a third or fourth booster shot necessary to restore our diminishing immune response over time. Therefore, the number of doses per 100 citizens varies widely by country as well: Cuba (304), United Arab Emirates (255), Chile (241), Singapore (226), South Korea (225), Denmark (225), China (212) and the United States (163).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

These Olympics are again a time when viewers worldwide are focused on the broad array of athletes from across the world who are competing to set world records. It is very inspiring to see them come together and cheer on the accomplishments of many amazing athletes who have practiced and sacrificed to get to the Olympics and win, regardless of their country.

And from a medical perspective, this year’s winter Olympics is being held in the safest place possible.

In 1943, the government abruptly announced that wartime rationing of shoes made of leather would go into effect in two days, limiting consumers to buying three pairs per person per year. (Rationing was lifted in October 1945.)

Pope Francis resumed greeting the public in St. Peter's Square, seven weeks after he interrupted the Sunday noon ritual to discourage crowds from gathering during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When we think about appreciation, it is something that drives connection in the workplace,” said Williamson, an employee relations and engagement specialist at Kansas State University. “When employees feel valued and respected, and their voices are being heard, they are able to engage more and have more enthusiasm for their work.”&nbsp;

Williamson is a featured speaker in February’s lineup of the webinar series,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/fcs/livingwellwed" target="_blank">Living Well Wednesday</a>, hosted by K-State Research and Extension.&nbsp;

Her talk – The Five Languages of Appreciation – is scheduled for Wednesday, followed by a Feb. 23 presentation on the MIND diet by K-State Research and Extension family and consumer science specialist Sharolyn Jackson.&nbsp;

That is so important.”&nbsp;Her presentation is modeled off the book, The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, that focus on: ●Words of affirmation.&nbsp;This can be a word of encouragement when a co-worker is taking on a difficult project.●Quality time.&nbsp;This may be one-on-one meetings to discuss a task, or perhaps going out to lunch together.●Acts of service.&nbsp;This could be jumping in to help a co-worker with some part of a big project.●Tangible gifts.&nbsp;This could be bringing a&nbsp;&nbsp;muffin or cup of coffee to a co-worker in the morning, or something more simple like a written note.&nbsp; ●Physical touch.&nbsp;This means appropriate ways to show support, such as a fist bump, handshake, or pat on the back.&nbsp;“We all have different languages of appreciation and it’s really a matter of being engaged with each other and actively listening to what a colleague really needs from us,” Williamson said.&nbsp;She added that her presentation will not only help participants better understand their own language of appreciation, but also develop an understanding of how others around them view appreciation.&nbsp;“When people feel appreciated, they can come into the workplace and be their true selves,” Williamson said. “There is such a wide range of benefits you receive when people create a culture of what it really means to appreciate others in the workplace.”&nbsp;Jackson’s Feb. 23 talk combines positive aspects of two healthy eating plans – the Mediterranean diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet.&nbsp;“There are components of both of those diets that are particularly helpful for the mind and brain,” Jackson said.&nbsp;The Mediterranean diet is characterized by foods high in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and whole grains. The DASH diet encourages foods that are low in sodium while avoiding saturated fats and added sugars.&nbsp;Jackson and co-presenter Lori Wuellner – a family and consumer sciences agent in Wyandotte County – will present “Eat More” and “Avoid” lists of common foods. As an example, she said blueberries are considered a food that is beneficial to the brain.
