The Tony Award-winning Peter and the Starcatcher will take the Salina Central Theatre stage later this week.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in the Salina Central Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and can be purchased in advance on the theatre's website or at the door starting at 6 p.m. on show nights.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and audience members will be able to pick their own seats in the auditorium. Masking is optional for all audience members.

Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair... and the bonds of friendship, duty and love.

A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Leah&nbsp;Jean-Lacher&nbsp;Reay touched many lives with her generosity and enthusiasm before her death in a crash with an intoxicated driver on Jan. 22, 2017. Join the Salina community in remembering Reay by donating blood at the annual American Red Cross blood drives held in her memory.

“I think these annual drives are such a meaningful way to remember Leah,” said Kevin Reay, her husband. “She was such a giving person.”&nbsp;

The Red Cross&nbsp;is&nbsp;testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus. &nbsp;

Plasma from routine blood and platelet donations that have high levels of antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma to meet the needs of COVID-19 patients with weakened immune systems. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood product collected from COVID-19 survivors who have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus. &nbsp;

The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test. To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that individuals who do not feel well or believe they may be ill with COVID-19 postpone donation.&nbsp;

At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross is also screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell disease.&nbsp;Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donors can expect to receive antibody test and sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. &nbsp;

A car reported stolen in south Salina on Monday afternoon was recovered in Manhattan on Tuesday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 20-year-old Salina woman went to Planet Fitness, 2012 S. Ohio Street, Monday afternoon and put the keys to her 2017 Kia Forte in a locker in the women's locker room. When she finished working out, she found that the keys and her car were gone.

Inside the car were the woman's purse, and camping gear including a tent, a cooler, and sleeping bags. Additionally, a friend's keys also were in the vehicle, Forrester said. Total loss was estimated at $19,240.

The woman later was seen on surveillance video driving away in the Forte at approximately 4 p.m. Monday.

As the owner of the car was talking with police, she received a fraud notification from her bank that someone was using her financial card at Target in Salina. Surveillance video from Target showed the same woman as was in the surveillance video from Planet Fitness, Forrester said.

Additionally, an app on the Forte owner's cellphone allowed her to ping the car's location. The first ping showed the car was in Junction City. A later ping showed that the car was at a Starbucks in Manhattan. Forrester said the Riley County Police Department was notified that the stolen car was in Manhattan. 

Tuesday morning, the Salina Police Department was notified by the Riley County Police Department that the stolen Forte had been found unoccupied, Forrester said. It was not damaged.

UPDATE: Car stolen in south Salina later located in Manhattan

UPDATE 4:37 p.m. Wednesday: The Salina Police Department released the following update Wednesday afternoon concerning&nbsp;Anthony Quentin Lopez-Garcia, who originally was identified as a person of interest in a&nbsp;homicide early this morning in Salina.

On April 20, 2022, an arrest warrant was issued for Lopez-Garcia by Saline County District Court, for the charges of First Degree Murder and Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

This afternoon, a Kansas City, Missouri resident recognized Lopez-Garcia apparently due to the previous media release. KCPD was contacted and Lopez-Garcia was taken into custody on unrelated local Kansas City charges. Lopez-Garcia will be extradited back to Kansas for the homicide upon completion of the extradition process.

The victim has been identified but presently, the next of kin resides in another state and the notification is forthcoming. Once that is done, the victim’s name will be released.

The Salina Police Department would like to thank the citizens for the information that lead to the arrest and capture of this individual. The investigation is ongoing.

The ceremony, which took place in a convention room at Tony’s Pizza Event Center, lasted about a half hour and honored the eight men rising up the ranks of the department.

Fire Chief Tony Sneidar, City Commissioner Bill Longbine and Deputy City Manager Jacob Wood all spoke at the ceremony. Topics of discussion included the honor of being promoted as well as the sacrifices families make for the good of the department and community. Salina Fire Department promotes 8 during ceremony Tuesday

The wheat is greening, the fruit trees are blooming and spring planting is in full swing. One day the temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees, and then two days later we received a dusting of snow. Needless to say, it’s all part of spring in Kansas! &nbsp; While looking at the calendar to mark the first day of corn planting, I quickly realized that we have officially hit the one-month mark until school is out for the summer. The days of my two kids home all day are upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited! &nbsp; They have a garden to help maintain, livestock to care for, swimming lessons to complete, little league practices and games to go to, library programming to attend, wheat harvest to help with, and 4-H projects to complete. It’s safe to say I plan to have an enriching summer with my kids while also taking care of our responsibilities on the farm. &nbsp; The garden has been prepared, and it’s now ready for two children to help manage. The kids have had a say in the seeds selected. They have helped plan the way the water will get to the growing plants. My two children have been given full reign of the garden space. They are free to dig and rake and water (with my oversight) to their choosing. Yes, weeding will also be a priority, but with their own garden tools, a radio playing music, and ownership in the space, I envision this summer gardening to be a fun experience that will perhaps incorporate more vegetables into my children’s picky food preferences. At the least, I hope my two will have a few garden entries at the local fair later this summer.&nbsp; &nbsp; While on summer break, the livestock will get even more attention from my children. My son’s cow and calf will soon return to the pasture near our home. Ensuring the animals have access to water daily and an occasional serving of range cubes will be a priority for my boy. He knows his cow is already bred and will deliver a calf later this fall. He also knows it is his responsibility to care for and observe his animals daily to ensure they also have a good summer on the farm as he anticipates another calf to add to his herd later this year. &nbsp; The sheep have already been released into their summer grazing space after the kids helped their grandpa build the fence. A breeding harness with a blue crayon has also been put on the ram that we recently introduced to the ewes. Soon, we will hopefully begin seeing signs in the form of blue marks on the backs of the females indicating the arrival of lambs later this fall. My two children will be responsible for helping keep watch over the ewes daily and note when a blue mark appears on another member of the flock in anticipation of lambing season. &nbsp; Physical activity will also be key to being home this summer. Organized time at the swimming pool as well as ball practices and games will keep my kids moving (and decrease screen time) while also having fun with friends. &nbsp; Fun will also be had with friends as my children participate in our public library’s summer program in town as well as during sessions with others to work on completing their 4-H projects.&nbsp; &nbsp; And we can’t forget about the wheat harvest we will all focus on when the time comes this summer. My two will assist me with making and delivering meals to the field, helping deliver truckloads of grain to the local elevator, and sitting in the buddy seats next to their dad and grandpa as the combines work through fields. It’s safe to say we have a full summer planned that will keep my kids’ minds engaged, their bodies active, and their relationships nurtured, while also providing them with opportunities that will help them understand the importance of fulfilling responsibilities on the farm.

INSIGHT: Visions of summer

The Kansas Wesleyan University DECA team's recent trip to Baltimore for the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference and competition proved to be quite successful, so much so that the KWU students returned to Salina as the most successful team at the conference.

The KWU team members competed against more than 800 other students from more than 100 other institutions during the conference April 9-12.

In its fifth year of competition, KWU was not only victorious over colleges and universities of similar size, but it also was victorious over such institutions as Pepperdine University, DePaul University, University of Texas, Rutgers University, and The University of Wisconsin, according to Trish Petak, KWU associate professor of business and accounting.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most international teams did not attend the conference and competition, however some teams from England were present.

Petak explained that DECA is a business competition in which students select event topics that include business ethics, marketing communication, and financial accounting. The students are presented cases that contain problems or opportunities within those specialized areas. Students are then given a set amount of time to prepare solutions and present those solutions to judges.

According to Petak, 100 percent of KWU's 14 team members finished in the Top 10 of their respective events. Six of the team members placed second and two were crowned world champions, she said.

Michelle Case, who is in her first year as chair of the Business and Accounting Department, said that she was in awe of what the team accomplished this year.

The students' success, in part, was in response to a challenge Petak issued to the team earlier in the year. She told them that "if we simply follow the DECA rubric provided to the judge, we are ordinary; you need to do something extra to make you extraordinary." The team took that to heart and it guided them through a successful competition season.

Petak also noted that the team was the department's team, and praised her colleagues for the work they do in the classroom with the students.

No one better than KWU team in international DECA competition

Today is Wednesday, April 20, the 110th day of 2022. There are 255 days left in the year.

MANHATTAN – Shane Potter is one who gives credit where credit is due. And when it comes to volunteers in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H program</a>, he’s big on the kudos.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Volunteers,” he says, “are really the lifeblood of how we run 4-H.”&nbsp;

In 2021, the Kansas 4-H program reported that more than 8,400 Kansans volunteered time to help nearly 50,000 youth. Volunteers support the hundreds of extension agents and state specialists that conduct 4-H programs across the state.&nbsp;

Potter is a 4-H Youth Development specialist, located in the state’s office in Manhattan, and from his perspective, the time given by Kansans is critical for youth.&nbsp;

“It’s the volunteers that bring life and connect with youth on a daily and weekly basis,” he said. “We are so appreciative of the contributions and structure that volunteers provide to make our system successful.”&nbsp;

Kansas 4-H is celebrating National Volunteer Week, April 16-23. The state’s largest youth organization has been around for more than 100 years, and offers nearly three dozen project areas and numerous programs that rely on caring adults to work closely with youth.&nbsp;

“There’s a place for everyone,” Potter said. “Regardless of how knowledgeable or confident a person is in an area, there is a place that can embrace your skills, help you contribute and allow you to give back to your community.”&nbsp;

Potter said Kansas 4-H offers a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/volunteers/volunteer-screening-resources/index.html" target="_blank">formal process for becoming a volunteer</a>, which includes a background check and training. He said those interested in becoming more involved should&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">contact their local extension office</a>.&nbsp;

Others, he said, may spend less time focused on specific areas or needs in the program. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to ask those volunteers to become involved.&nbsp;

“We’ve done studies of why people volunteer and why people don’t,” Potter said. “And one of the things they say is that they weren’t asked. We help our staff understand that if you see someone that has a passion for an area that’s part of your community, it’s okay to ask them directly to volunteer.”&nbsp;

Potter said that although Kansas 4-H plans a week to show its appreciation for volunteers, he realize that many who give their time aren’t looking for recognition.&nbsp;

“But,” he said, “it’s always a nice thing to show we do appreciate what they’ve done, and the things that volunteers are contributing to youth.”&nbsp;

On Wednesday and Thursday, Circle C Construction of Goddard is scheduled to seal cracks on the following streets, weather permitting.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $288,000 project is part of the City's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance program.

MARION&nbsp;– Walleye harvest regulations have changed at Marion Reservoir – north of U.S. Highway 56 between Marion and Hillsboro – as part of a four-year pilot study to improve public walleye fishing opportunities. 

Effective Jan. 1, 2022, Marion Reservoir walleye is managed with the following harvest regulations:

●3 per day creel limit, with no more than one fish 21 inches or longer

KDWPMARION&nbsp;– Walleye harvest regulations have changed at Marion Reservoir – north of U.S. Highway 56 between Marion and Hillsboro – as part of a four-year pilot study to improve public walleye fishing opportunities. Effective Jan. 1, 2022, Marion Reservoir walleye is managed with the following harvest regulations:●18-inch minimum length limit●3 per day creel limit, with no more than one fish 21 inches or longerThe study, which began Jan. 1, 2020, is organized into two phases: a two-year Grow Phase and a two-year Harvest Phase.During the Grow Phase, which took place January 2020 thru December 2021, walleye were managed with a 21-inch minimum length limit and a 5 per day creel limit. This was done to increase densities of walleye in Marion Reservoir longer than 18 inches.Now, the waterbody is in its two-year Harvest Phase. Through December 2023, Marion Reservoir’s walleye population will be managed with an 18-inch minimum length limit and a 3 per day creel limit, with no more than one fish 21 inches or longer.Marion Reservoir is one of three Kansas reservoirs that can sustain a fishable walleye population through natural recruitment.
