KDA offers specialty crop webinar series

UPDATE 9:20 a.m. Thursday: The Salina Police Department released the following statement on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalinaKSPD">Facebook page</a> this morning concerning the arrest of&nbsp;Casey Devol:

Last night, our dispatch center received a "Be on the Look Out"(BOLO) from Douglas County, CO for a homicide suspect, Casey Devol.

Devol was wanted for murdering two family members in Douglas County, Colorado. He was reportedly armed with multiple guns.

Cell phone information indicated that the suspect was in our city, near I-70. Officers responded to the area to search for the suspect.

At 7:40 PM, a SPD officer located Devol near his vehicle parked behind the Super 8 Motel, 120 E. Diamond Drive. SPD officers and KHP troopers took Devol into custody without incident.

A man wanted in connection to a double homicide in Colorado was arrested in Salina, according to the following post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DouglasCountySheriff">Douglas County Sheriff's Office Facebook page</a> this evening.

Deputies responding to a report of a double homicide in the Franktown area of Douglas County, Colo., found the bodies of a man and a woman Tuesday afternoon. Franktown is located southeast of Denver.

Local, area students earn honors at Univ. Nebraska-Lincoln

Following is the Saline County Health Department COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

Beginning February 21, COVID data will be reported on Wednesdays only.

Another member of our community has lost their life to COVID-19 since our last update on Monday.

Another 63 people have had COVID-19 positive test results reported to the Saline County Health Department.

The Salina Regional Health Center reports that 26 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

There are a recorded 435 active cases of COVID-19.

As of February, all new cases are being handled by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County: One additional death, 63 new COVID-19 cases

During its meeting Tuesday evening, the USD 305 Board of Education recognized two teachers who have demonstrated excellence during their first full year of teaching.

2022 Elementary Horizon Award – Lindsey Chavez Fourth Grade Teacher, Sunset

Well into her second year at Sunset Elementary School, Chavez makes sure her fourth grade classroom is grounded in organization, calm and respect. On this foundation, she builds strong connections with her students.

In person and on Google Classroom, she has positive, uplifting conversations with students that help inspire them to work. 

Chavez explained, “The most beneficial thing you can do as an educator is to get to know your students and build a relationship. One of my favorite parts of teaching is getting to know my students’ backgrounds and interests.”

She incorporates high interest topics and highlights important events in her students’ lives. 

“I always wish them luck before a basketball tournament or ask them to tell me about a book they have been reading,” she said.

Her students feel included and important when she shares her kind sense of humor and takes the time for individual conversations.

When creating a learning plan for a student, Chavez never makes assumptions. 

“I pull from many sources; data, assessments, student input, teacher input, and parent input. Because each student’s needs are different, I create individualized plans and interventions,” Chavez said.

“I think recognizing individual growth is important for students to stay motivated,” she explained. “It’s inspiring for students to see where they started and how far they’ve come. She takes the time to acknowledge progress and celebrate success.

Chavez’s communication with parents and guardians is founded on the belief that parents and teachers are a team, working toward the same goal of student achievement. 

“Parents help you gain insights about their child that you may not see at school,” she said. 

Chavez makes it a priority to communicate frequently and to keep it timely. 

“Whether it is an event coming up or a paper I’m sending home, I make it a priority to keep my families in the loop about what is going on,” Chavez said.

2022 Secondary Horizon Award – Cole Dow Welding Instructor, Central High School

While it is just his second year of teaching high school students, Cole Dow’s teaching experience actually reaches back 25 years. He spent those years teaching welding in the military before joining Central High School. The resulting wealth of experience helps Dow smoothly blend real-world encounters with classroom learning. The result is students who are engaged and eager to get ready for the workforce.

Dow connects well with his students, providing structure and motivating them to raise their skills in preparation to join the industry. He creates a supportive classroom environment so his students are inspired to take a few risks, learn more and reach a little further.

In January, Dow took 13 students to the Missouri Welding Institute (MWI) to compete and learn. 

“Eight students came as observers and were able to grade the welds as an additional exercise to learn more about weld deficiencies and how to improve their own welding techniques. Five seniors were eligible to compete with Trevor Johnson of South High School placing 9th out of 400,” he said.

Dow knows that these opportunities help build students’ confidence and comfort with the real-life scenarios that they will encounter after graduation.

At the MWI competition, all the students participated in a job fair where they discussed career opportunities with national employers. 

“Our students were able to practice talking with future employers,” Dow explained. “Two students got an open offer of $28 per hour to start after they graduate.”

“In his second year of teaching, Cole has breathed new life into our welding program,” said Matt Brungardt, principal of Central High School. “The number of students taking welding is at an all-time high and we have an unprecedented interest in the program.”

Minor earthquake rattles part of Dickinson County

LINCOLN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Wednesday in Lincoln County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Chevy Silverado driven by Heather Marie Schmidt, 38, Topeka, was westbound on Interstate 70 four miles east of Kansas 156.

The pickup rear-ended a 2016 Kia Optima driven by Kent G. Tadeo, 22, Fort Riley, who was slowing for traffic.&nbsp; The impact pushed the Kia off the highway and into the ditch.

EMS transported&nbsp;Tadeo and a passenger Joanna&nbsp;Rodriguez, 20, Fort Riley, to Salina Regional Health Center. Schmidt was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

NWS warns of elevated fire concerns this week and next

The Salina Police Department this morning issued the following statement concerning a body found in the pond at Indian Rock Park.

On February 8, 2022, at approximately 6:00 pm, a citizen walking the trails at Indian Rock Park, 1300 Gypsum Avenue, called the Salina Police Department and reported he saw what he believed to be a person lying in the pond in the middle of the park.

The Salina Police Department responded and located a white male deceased. The deceased has been identified as John Palmgren, 56-year- old male from Salina. The next of kin have been notified.

The Salina Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident, and at this time no foul play is suspected.

We are asking the public for any information they may have regarding Palmgren’s whereabouts or activities proceeding his death.

Salina police: Body found at Indian Rock Park ID'd; foul play not suspected

GYPSUM - A minor earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.3 magnitude quake struck southwest of Gypsum at 5 a.m. It was centered just north of E. Hedberg Road and west of S. Whitmore Road.

Police are investigating an attempted aggravated robbery at a north Salina travel center late Tuesday night.

Officers were sent to the Pilot Travel Center, 1944 N. Ninth Street, just before 11 p.m. Tuesday. A 56-year-old Salina man told officers that he was playing a video game at the travel center when a white male approached him and began to watch him play, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

The Salina man told police that the man left the game room and went to move his vehicle, backing it into a parking stall. He then returned to the game room and, at some point, pulled out what was described as a silver handgun, pointed it at the Salina man, and demanded money. According to Forrester, the Salina man charged the man with the gun and a physical altercation ensued. The man with the gun then fled to his vehicle and left the area.

The vehicle was described as possibly being a silver Nissan.

The Salina man was not injured in the fray, Forrester noted.

Salina police reviewing video after attempted aggravated robbery

I can’t remember if I was helping check momma cows during calving season or chopping ice during a spell of cold weather when I was inspired to do something I shouldn’t. I do know it was about this time of year when my grandfather’s storytelling found a set of eager ears and launched a journey that would be completed a few weeks later, just about the time spring break rolled around. I was in high school, and I can still envision the scene in my grandfather’s pickup truck as he told me about the time he tried to make wine when he was about my age. From my hazy recollection, the gist of the story was he poured some yeast into a bottle of grape juice and then stuffed a cork in the neck and stowed the brew away inside his closet. Eventually, he forgot about the science experiment fermenting somewhere amongst his blue jeans and boots. The days turned into weeks before there was a sudden reckoning as the cork’s grip on the glass was overcome by a buildup of carbon dioxide and shot out, followed by the rest of the bottle’s contents. “I got in a decent amount of trouble for ruining my clothes,” my grandfather told me. “But my closet sure smelled good for a long time.” Even while I was laughing at the punchline, my mind was forming a plan to conduct my own experiment. I even had the benefit of knowing a cork shouldn’t be used. I also took satisfaction in the apparent loophole my grandfather helped me see. While I was too young to buy alcohol, there was no such prohibition on sourcing all of the necessary ingredients. It didn’t take long to recruit a friend to help complete this small act of rebellion. We soon abandoned our initial plan to create our own vintage with freshly crushed grapes in favor of a couple bottles of juice off a shelf, a sack of sugar and some yeast. These supplies were artfully split between two different shopping carts so as to avoid raising any suspicions of their intended use. We retreated to the cover of my friend’s kitchen to begin mixing the elixir, an act we were old enough to know was wrong, but we were young enough to do it anyway. We spooned in sugar and added bread yeast before stretching balloons over the lips of each bottle. Then we waited. Periodically checking the concoction over the next few weeks provided a great view of chemistry in action. The yeast consumed the sugar producing enough carbon dioxide to fill the balloon, which was evidence our plan was working. When the rubber orbs started to deflate a few weeks later, it was finally time to test our winemaking skills. We were naïve enough to hope we’d brewed something amazing. We would have settled for something that was merely drinkable. Our sights were set way too high. While the liquid gave off an almost pleasant aroma as we strained it through coffee filters, the initial sip was overpowering. So much so that I had a much more intimate understanding of what Roger Miller was singing about in “Chug-a-Lug”. We didn’t make it much beyond the initial tasting before abandoning the idea of drinking our wine. I’m sure it could have been repurposed to strip varnish or a ground clearing herbicide, though. The only buzz I received from the wine was the bit of wisdom that my grandfather was lucky to have forgotten that bottle in his closet.

On Feb. 9, 1971, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake in California's San Fernando Valley claimed 65 lives. The crew of Apollo 14 returned to Earth after man's third landing on the moon. 

In 1825, the House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams president after no candidate received a majority of electoral votes. 

In 1942, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff held its first formal meeting to coordinate military strategy during World War II. 

In 1943, the World War II battle of Guadalcanal in the southwest Pacific ended with an Allied victory over Japanese forces. 

In 1950, in a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, Republican Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin charged that the State Department was riddled with Communists. 

In 1962, an agreement was signed to make Jamaica an independent nation within the British Commonwealth later in the year.

Five years ago: A federal appeals court refused to reinstate President Donald Trump's ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations, unanimously rejecting the administration's claim of presidential authority, questioning its motives and concluding that the order was unlikely to survive legal challenges. Trump reaffirmed America's long-standing "one China" policy in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, potentially alleviating concerns about a major shift in Washington's relations with Beijing.
