Following is the Saline County Health Department COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

Four additional members of our community have lost their lives to COVID-19 since our last update on Monday.

Another 157 people have had COVID-19 positive test results reported to the Saline County Health Department.

The Salina Regional Health Center reports that 22 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

There are a recorded 2,300 active cases of COVID-19. Due to this overwhelmingly high number of cases, the Saline County Health Department will only be contacting those under 18 years old or who have requested an isolation letter for their employers.

COVID Vaccination Update for Saline County

●An additional 128 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 this week, an increase of .3 percent.

●A total of 29,782 residents of Saline County have been vaccinated, accounting for 55 percent of the total population.

Saline County: 4 additional deaths, 157 new COVID-19 cases

Television personality and car enthusiast Jay Leno will be the featured speaker at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet in April.

That announcement was made this afternoon in, perhaps, the most fitting location in Salina, The Garage, the automotive museum at 134 S. Fourth Street, that is scheduled to open later this month.

Leno will be in Salina on April 8 through a partnership between the chamber, the Stiefel Theatre, and The Garage. Upon arrival, he will attend a by-invitation-only event at The Garage to tour Salina’s newest experience. Then he will address those gathered for the chamber banquet, speaking about his business experiences and motor hobbies. 

Following the chamber banquet, Leno is scheduled to perform a stand-up show at the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Tickets for the Stiefel performance will go on sale at noon Friday and may be purchased by contacting the Stiefel at 785-827-1998 or at <a href="http://www.stiefeltheatre.org/tickets">www.stiefeltheatre.org/tickets</a>.

“This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity that has aligned for Salina, through the partnership, this series of unique events are geared at supporting each of the host organization missions and elevating Salina’s community profile overall. Jay Leno checks the box as one of the world’s biggest car enthusiasts, one of the biggest names in entertainment, and one of the best comedians in America history!” said Travis Young, 2022 chamber board chair. “It is a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate all of the momentum that Salina has, and we look forward to his positive and humorous message at the banquet.” 

The chamber plans to have a membership networking reception from 3-5:45 p.m. April 8 in the Great Plains Manufacturing Hall of Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway. This reception, however, won't be a typical chamber gathering. The reception will be customized this year with a car show featuring an array of special automobiles owned by chamber members and will be sponsored by Holm Automotive Salina/Abilene.

The chamber annual banquet will follow in the Tony's Pizza Events Center arena. Seating will consist of tables of eight. Tickets for chamber members are $65 per person for the banquet. Tickets for non-members are $90 per person for the banquet. The banquet will include remarks by outgoing Chamber Chair Jeff Maes and incoming Chair Travis Young, as well as a brief review of the chamber’s 2021 accomplishments, and the address by Leno.

Leno to speak at chamber banquet, perform in Stiefel on April 8

A Salina man was arrested after he led deputies on a foot chase when they tried to serve a warrant Tuesday evening.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies went to a residence in the 1000 block of E. Iron Avenue just before 8 p.m. Tuesday to serve a felony probation violation warrant on Joshua Hayes, 39. When they arrived, they found him outside the residence and attempted to arrest him on the warrant.

Hayes allegedly struck one of the deputies and took off running, Soldan said. Deputies tased Hayes as he attempted to climb over a fence and caught up with him shortly thereafter.

While taking Hayes into custody, the deputies allegedly found him to be in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine and a needle, Soldan said.

Hayes was arrested on the following requested charges in addition to the warrant, Soldan said.

Business plan competition set for March

Our household has only one rule about pets. We cannot buy or seek out pets, they must find and choose us. This rule is not my creation, but it is easy to follow because I have always been apathetic to pets. I don’t dislike animals but lack an interest in pets. I am not the person who stops to talk to dogs in the park or asks about someone’s pets with interest beyond friendliness. Owning a pet has always seemed like a chore I want to avoid at all costs. Life rarely goes how we plan. During the polar vortex cold spell last February, my life was transformed by the unlikely arrival of two new pets.

At some point in the bitter cold days, we noticed the appearance of a couple of stray cats. We knew these cats needed help surviving the cold spell and put out food, a heated water bowl and some straw bales to keep them dry, warm, and full. The cats continued to show up for meals, and we began to learn their personalities. The female tabby had ninja stealth, which she used to get her food. The grey male was more interested being friends with the tabby. He followed her bellowing the most pitiful “hello-oh” in hopes of becoming her friend. She was not impressed. This created hours of entertainment for us as we watched him try to sneak food without alerting her. We later learned he made that sound constantly when he was looking for others. Fittingly, we named him Hello Kitty After a few weeks, milk was added to our meal offerings in an effort to try to get close enough to pet them. In the spring, the 100 pounds of cat food and somewhere between 5 and 10 gallons of milk paid off. Marc was able to pet the tabby, now named KitCat. She soon discovered the joy of a good scratch behind your ears, and it wasn’t long before both cats lined up for scratches. At some point in this long campaign to convince the cats to become our pets, I went from rolling my eyes to a willing and enthusiastic participant. I was even the first person to let them into the house when they showed signs of curiosity. By fall, KitCat was living as a mostly indoor cat with the personality of a mercurial princess who spends her days issuing orders and punishing those who dare ignore her. She is funny and sassy, demanding and sweet, playful and curious. It became clear by the affection, wrath and possessiveness that KitCat chose me to be her human servant. And that fills my heart with joy and peace. It was a surprise to realize I am not apathetic to pets. I let fear and worry about responsibility color my decisions and convince me cats weren’t that great.

KitCat reminded me that my capacity to love and serve others will only grow out of necessity. I would not have willingly sought out this responsibility but when it landed on me, the burden was lighter than expected and completely worth it. We all make excuses and rationalize our reasons for not doing the hard things like volunteering to help, building relationships with new people, giving generously or being selfless. Stop letting those excuses and start asking, who needs me?

On Feb. 2, 1990, in a dramatic concession to South Africa's Black majority, President F.W. de Klerk lifted a ban on the African National Congress and promised to free Nelson Mandela.

U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who confronted the mob that stormed the building on Jan. 6 and died a day later, lay in honor inside the Capitol. The Senate approved Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tuh-juhj) as transportation secretary, making him the first openly gay person confirmed to a Cabinet post. A Moscow court ordered Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to serve more than 2 1/2 years in prison on charges that he violated the terms of his probation while he was recuperating in Germany from nerve-agent poisoning.

The Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Foundation has approved $15,725 in Horizons Grants for cultural organizations and local artists. The grants were juried and scored by professional panelists with expertise in the granting areas.

Horizons Grants support initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to artistic excellence and community involvement by engaging audience members as active participants. Applicants also are encouraged to develop strategic partnerships to strengthen the reach of their local activities.

Organizational Project grants funded for 2022 are:

Salina Art Center, $6,000 for “2022 Salina Biennial | Contemporary Art from the Mountain Plains Region” The Salina Art Center will host the 2022 Salina Biennial: Contemporary Art from the Mountain Plains Region May 26 - Sept. 4, 2022, in Salina, Kansas. The Biennial features recent work from visual artists in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Educational workshops, special programming, and short-term artist residencies are scheduled from the pool of selected artists in an effort made to invite a minimum of one artist from each state to participate in a meaningful way.

Salina Symphony, $6,000 for “The American Journey” The Salina Symphony will partner with the Salina Community Theatre to present “The American Journey” concert in January 2023. The concert will feature Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” a work that celebrates the American immigrant experience. Innovative in its format, “Ellis Island” brings elements of the theatre and multimedia into the concert hall, employing actors and projected historical images from the Ellis Island archives. In addition to a public concert, it will also be performed for 1,200 grade school students.

Kansas Wesleyan University, $2,025 for Salina Strings Day Salina Strings Day, scheduled for February 10, 2022, is a community outreach program developed by the Kansas Wesleyan University Department of Music Chair, Dr. James McAllister. Supported by the two guiding principles of artistic excellence and community involvement, Salina Strings Day will promote the strings programs in Salina Public Schools by providing an opportunity for strings students to engage with top-level orchestral musicians in the United States in workshops and performances.

Lana Jordan Developing Artist grants funded for 2022 are:

Paul Alexander, $1,700 for “Help Save Paul Alexander the Hardcore Artist from a Life Without a P.C.” Paul Alexander received funding to purchase a new computer. This purchase will support his ability to sell art online and in art galleries, teaching online, file storage, and cutting time for downloading and uploading large files of art videos and photos. He will hire a builder to construct a computer that is a better fit for his art business and uses new technology mixed with old photo card readers to access exciting digital files.

Enrichment Grants available for application – Feb. 1 through Nov. 15

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities reviews Enrichment Grant applications on a rolling basis, from Feb. 1 through Nov. 15 each year. For 2022, applicants may apply for up to $1,000 to support the presentation of work, study, training, artistic promotion, purchase of equipment, or travel.

The agency will again accept Organizational Project and Developing Artists Grant applications in November 2022. All grant guidelines and applications are available at salinaarts.com.

Horizons is a privately funded grants program made possible by contributions from more than 50 individuals, foundations, and businesses, along with the Salina Arts &amp; Humanities (SAH)Foundation. MCPHERSON COUNTY — A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Tuesday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1994 Ford Ranger driven by William E. Einfeldt, 69, Lindsborg, was westbound on Kansas 4 at 15th Avenue. The pickup crossed the center line, traveled into the south ditch, struck a KDOT sign, traveled back across the highway, entered the north ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Einfeldt to Salina Regional Health Center. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank distributed a record-breaking number of food and hygiene items in 2021. Now the local agency is facing the challenge of sparse shelves with, well, a challenge.

In 2021, the food bank distributed 486,023 items from its pantry, in addition to an abundance of fresh produce, bakery items and special products, according to Karen Couch, food bank executive director.

As a way to refill its pantry shelves, the food bank has created a CANSTRUCTION COMPETITION, in which six teams in the community have been challenged to collect food items and create displays with the collected food while raising awareness of the local fight against hunger, Couch noted.

The competition kicked off with the Cubs in Action students from Coronado Elementary School. The students turned their school-wide collection of tuna, brown sugar, and canned olives into a two-dimensional rendering of their beloved mascot, the cougar.

In the second week of the competition, the LDS Missionaries stationed in Salina finished building a giant panda made out of cans of tuna, beef ravioli, broth, and spam in the lobby of the food bank, 255 S. Chicago Street. 

Four additional teams - K-State Salina, Salina Adult Education Center, JAB IT PC, and The Temple - are currently working on their displays in hopes of winning the Sweepstakes Award, which will be given to the display with the most votes on Facebook. 

"We love all of the creativity and imagination that our CANSTRUCTION teams are bringing to this competition. This is such a unique way to bring people together around a cause, while helping to restock our pantry,” Couch said.

Food bank creates challenge to help replenish pantry shelves

GYPSUM - Two earthquakes struck southeastern Saline County Tuesday.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey the first, a 2.6 magnitude quake, struck at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday southwest of Gypsum. It was centered north of E. Hedberg Road between S. Niles Road and S. Cunningham Road.

The second earthquake, a 2.8 magnitude quake, struck at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday southwest of Gypsum. I was centered just south of the S. Whitmore Road/E. Hedberg Road intersection.

Two small quakes rattle part of SE Saline County Tuesday

MCPHERSON - A McPherson High School student was arrested today in connection to a threat to commit violence at the school.

On Monday evening, the McPherson Police Department received a report concerning a threat made on Snapchat to commit violence with knives at the high school, according to a news release posted on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/McphersonPD">McPherson KS Police Department Facebook page</a> this afternoon.

Today, the department stationed additional officers at the high school and middle school.

"With the assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the McPherson Police Department identified the suspect who communicated the threat of violence via Snapchat as a 15-year-old McPherson High School student," the department noted.

The teen was arrested on a requested charge of criminal threat. 

McPherson Police Chief Mikel T. Golden thanked students and parents who saw the Snapchat and reported it to law enforcement.

Additionally, Golden noted rumors of a threat of violence involving guns, were just that: rumors. There were no threats involving guns or firearms that were communicated.

TOPEKA — Rep.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/members/rep_carlson_suzi_1/">Suzi Carlson</a>&nbsp;was arrested late Monday and booked into Shawnee County Jail with citations for drunk driving and failing to maintain a single lane.

 </figure>By SHERMAN SMITH Kansas ReflectorTOPEKA — Rep.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/members/rep_carlson_suzi_1/">Suzi Carlson</a>&nbsp;was arrested late Monday and booked into Shawnee County Jail with citations for drunk driving and failing to maintain a single lane.Tim Phelps, deputy director of the jail, said Topeka police stopped Carlson at 10:08 p.m. Monday at S.W. 14th and Topeka Blvd., about four blocks south of the Statehouse.<figure>

 </figure>Online jail records indicate Carlson, a Republican from Clay Center, was booked into jail at 11 p.m. and released at 2:15 a.m. after posting $1,000 cash bond. The citations indicate she had greater than .08 blood alcohol level and that she made an unsafe lane change. A court date was set for March 1.Carlson has served in the House since 2019.
