Police are looking for an SUV and multiple items that were inside, including an urn with human ashes, that were stolen from a north Salina hotel earlier this week.

A 27-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday, someone stole his silver 2014 Dodge Journey from the parking lot of Days Inn, 407 W. Diamond Drive, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The SUV had a Kansas license plate of 743MWC.

The man was still in possession of the vehicle's key fob, Forrester said.

The man also is missing items that were inside the SUV, including the following.

●An urn containing the man's father's ashes

Forrester said total loss was estimated at $6,580.

Local, area students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at K-State

Summer’s just around the corner, which means you might be thinking about one of my favorite things ever: vacation! In fact, I always joke that vacation planning is basically one of my spiritual gifts. But we all know vacations can get expensive real fast, which makes them a lot less fun than they should be. So, here are a few tips that will help you plan an amazing vacation without hurting your budget:

No matter what Baby Step you’re on, you don’t have to deprive yourself of having fun this summer. But it&nbsp;is&nbsp;important to plan in a way that makes sense for your finances. If you’re on Baby Step 1 or 2 (saving a $1,000 emergency fund and getting out of debt), you’ll want to find some creative ways to have a great time without spending money. You could do a staycation and use a couple days of your paid time off to relax with your family and explore free events in your own city. You could also go camping—even if it’s just in your backyard—or stay with close friends or family. Don’t lose sight of your financial goals right now, because if you stay gazelle intense, you’ll be able to take your dream vacation a lot sooner than you might think!

If you’re on Baby Step 3 (saving 3 to 6 months of expenses in a fully funded emergency fund), you could do a smaller-scale trip like a couple nights or a long weekend away. This still isn’t the time to splurge, so take a look at some less popular (but fun) destinations like a cabin in the mountains. There can be more vacation flexibility on Baby Steps 4, 5, 6 and 7, but you should still plan to cash flow something that works with your budget and other financial goals.

Doing your research to find the best rates on hotels, flights, attractions, etc. will seriously pay off. Always compare airfare rates on sites like Google Flights, Skyscanner and Scott’s Cheap Flights, and book your tickets as far in advance as you can. And check out Groupon for deals on attractions and events. Rumor has it that if you call a hotel and ask them to price match a rate you found at a similar hotel, you could knock some money off your total bill.

Speaking of price matching, when you’re shopping around for the best deals, don’t be afraid to use the power of negotiation. I know it can feel uncomfortable in the moment, but simply asking for a discount, family rate or any promotions they might be offering can save you a ton of money. I’ve done this myself. One time, my husband and I were planning an end-of-summer trip a few weeks before the fall rates were supposed to kick in, so I asked if we could have the off-season rates a little early. And they let us! We ended up saving a lot on that trip, so I’d recommend asking. The worst they can say is no, right?

Don’t fall for the points and rewards

You might be tempted to get a credit card just for those airline miles and reward points, but trust me: It’s not worth it! By the time you’ve put enough stuff on a credit card to&nbsp;maybe&nbsp;rack up enough miles for a one-way flight, you’ll be deeper in debt and further away from actually being able to cash flow a vacation.

And if you’re worried about not being able to use a debit card on your trip, I promise you can do everything with a debit card that you can with a credit card—renting a car, booking a hotel, you name it. Depending on the location, you might have to ask around at a few different places to find one that accepts debit cards (my husband and I have had to do this with rental car companies), but you’ll find one. And it will be worth it to know you steered clear of debt in the process!

Don’t compare your vacation to anyone else’s

We’ve all heard the famous quote about comparison being the thief of joy, but you guys, it’s so true—especially when it comes to vacations. You might even want to take a break from social media for a while if you know you won’t be able to scroll without feeling jealous of your neighbors’ tropical vacation and comparing it to the trip you took (or weren’t able to take). And when you spend less time comparing, you’ll be less tempted to overspend on your own vacation.

Remember, social media doesn’t give you the full picture of reality. And at the end of the day, no matter what kind of vacation or staycation you do, you still get to take a break and spend time with the people you love. That’s something worth celebrating!

CRUZE: How to vacation without breaking the budget

Today is Tuesday, May 17, the 137th day of 2022. There are 228 days left in the year.

On May 17, 1954, a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court handed down its Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision which held that racially segregated public schools were inherently unequal, and therefore unconstitutional.

In 1536, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer declared the marriage of England's King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn invalid after she failed to produce a male heir; Boleyn, already condemned for high treason, was executed two days later.

In 1940, the Nazis occupied Brussels, Belgium, during World War II.

In 1946, President Harry S. Truman seized control of the nation's railroads, delaying — but not preventing — a threatened strike by engineers and trainmen.

In 1973, a special committee convened by the U.S. Senate began its televised hearings into the Watergate scandal.

Five years ago: The Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee a federal investigation into potential coordination between Russia and Donald Trump's campaign during the 2016 presidential election. Pvt. Chelsea Manning, the soldier who was sentenced to 35 years in a military prison for giving classified materials to WikiLeaks, walked free after serving seven years behind bars, her sentence having been commuted by President Barack Obama. Chris Cornell, who was lead singer with rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, took his own life in a Detroit hotel room; he was 52.

One year ago: The Supreme Court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, agreed to consider a major rollback of abortion rights by hearing a challenge to a Mississippi abortion law that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. (A decision in the case is expected next month.) The White House said President Joe Biden expressed support for a cease-fire in a call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after eight days of Israeli-Palestinian airstrikes and rocket attacks. AT&amp;T announced a deal to combine its massive media operations, including HBO and CNN, with Discovery, the owner of lifestyle networks including the Food Network and HGTV.

USD 305 announces dismissal times for last day of school Thursday

The 2022 Smoky Hill River Festival is less than a month away and Salina Arts &amp; Humanities is bringing some pre-festival fun to downtown Salina Friday.

Festival Friday is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot at 140 S. Fifth Street, the site of the latest mural effort: the Artwork Alley Mural Expo '22.

The event is open to the public and is scheduled to include the following, according to Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

●A food truck, Wolves Eaton, from Lawrence, is scheduled to serve burgers, brats, and more.

●Cash Hollistah will be curating the music on Friday night.

●Artwork Alley Mural Expo artists will be working on their murals. Bring lawn chairs and watch professional artists paint murals.

●Artyopolis games will be out for family fun.

●Community members are invited to paint on festival trash barrels that will be dispersed throughout Oakdale Park.

●A place to purchase festival wristbands and t-shirts.

About the Artwork Alley Mural Expo '22

Kansas muralist Brady Scott has selected six local and regional artists to join him in painting multiple murals on the alley walls facing the parking lot at 140 S. Fifth Street, according to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. 

To kick off the event, Scott recently completed the first mural on the south-facing wall of the lot. 

Artwork Alley muralists include the following, according to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

Kamela Eaton, Wichita, is a painter whose practice is focused on figurative paintings that explore all aspects of identity. Her African American, working-class, Midwestern upbringing is reflected in her bold, colorful, straightforward, no-frills perspective on emotional spaces and experiences. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from Wichita State University.

Darren Morawitz, Salina, is the director of education at the Salina Art Center and an artist whose work explores contemporary issues through historical context. He studied at Fort Hays State University and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio painting and art education.

Hanna Lee Scott, Wichita, graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from Wichita State University and is co-owner of Vortex Souvenir in Wichita. She works as a freelance illustrator for private and corporate projects. She provides artwork and murals for clients such as Central Standard Brewing, Lululemon Athletica, Reverie Coffee Roasters, and Little Lion Ice Cream.

Ray (SAEB) Albarez, Dallas, is inspired by graffiti and urban landscapes. His art has evolved from graphite on paper to aerosol on buildings, catapulting him to use acrylic and oil paint. Ultimately, Albarez’s paintings allow you to view, construe, debate, and repute his artistic style.

Anthony (AMP) Parker, Kansas City, Mo., is an artist who embraces his energetic flow and skillful grace with both spray can and paintbrush, murals, canvases, and more.

Jeremy (SADAT) Fields, Fort Collins, Colo., is a self-taught artist of Pawnee, Apsaalooké, and Chickasaw ancestry, with culture serving as a primary influence on his creative endeavors. His work spans the creative gamut, including beadwork, photography, painting and design, and graffiti writing. He is noted for his affinity for style development and letter aesthetics.

Brady Scott, Hutchinson, is a father, artist, and musician living and creating in the beautiful rolling hills of central Kansas. Brady works in professional-grade spray paint and acrylic. He implements various techniques to create large-scale murals, one-of-a-kind illustrations, and intimate canvas paintings. He draws inspiration from wildlife, people, history, and the timeless prairie landscape with a unique, contemporary style.

Additionally, Salina artists Chase Wheeler and Colin Benson are painting downtown’s first trash corral mural for the Artwork Alley parking lot during the Smoky Hill River Festival, June 9-12, to be installed upon completion, according to Salina Arts and Humanities.

Proclamations, trail project, water items on Salina City Commission agenda

Police are looking for an alleged bat-wielding good Samaritan after a Salina man was struck in the head Friday afternoon in north Salina.

Police responded to a residence in the 600 block of N. Seventh Street at approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday for the report of a person struck in the head with a baseball bat, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

When officers arrived, EMS personnel were tending to a 26-year-old Salina man who had a large, open wound on the left side of his head. He was later transported to Salina Regional Health Center.

Forrester said a woman who lived at the residence thought the man was acting strangely and tried to get him to leave. When he refused, she said she went out on the porch, flagged down a passing driver, and asked for help in removing the man from the premises. She said the man who was acting strangely had a machete-type weapon.

The driver went inside the residence and the man was allegedly struck with the baseball bat, Forrester said. The driver then got back in the vehicle and left.

Police would like to speak with the driver, Forrester said. The incident remains under investigation.

Salina man in SRHC after allegedly being struck with baseball bat

A motorcyclist was injured in a single-vehicle accident Friday evening in southwest Salina.

Leon Hall, 38, of Salina, was on a 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he attempted to turn off of Glenshire Avenue onto Canterbury Drive. Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Hall failed to successfully negotiate the turn and crashed.

The wreck occurred at approximately 8 p.m. Friday.

Forrester said that Hall suffered significant injuries and was transported to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

The wreck remains under investigation, Forrester said.
