Weather-related closings and delays

A local health and wellness coalition, Live Well Saline County, is doing a Community Food Survey to identify and develop solutions for the barriers to accessing food in Salina.&nbsp;

The information gathered in this survey will inform efforts&nbsp;to implement initiatives through&nbsp;Pathways to a Healthy Kansas, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas grant initiative.&nbsp;Through the Pathways Initiative Saline County has the opportunity to apply for non-competitive implementation grants of up to $100,000 to support Safe Routes to Food projects.

The results from the Saline County Food Survey will help identify the Safe Routes to Food projects that Live Well Saline County will apply for grant funding to implement.

The survey is available in print as well as online. The link to the online survey is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LiveWellSalineCounty" target="_blank">https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LiveWellSalineCounty</a>.&nbsp;The survey will will close on March 12. The 2022 Smoky Hill River Festival print is Sun-Kissed.

Designed by woodcut printmaking and paper artist Hannah Gebhart, Sun-Kissed is a multi-block linocut print created by carving each color (yellow, blue, green, and black) on its own block and then printing the layers on top of each other, according to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

"The festival print was inspired by the scenery of central Kansas and how the natural elements connect to the Smoky Hill River Festival. Sunflowers radiate joy, positive energy, and good vibes - just like the River Festival," Salina Arts &amp; Humanities noted.

The Smoky Hill River Festival is scheduled for June 9-12 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

About the artist from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities

A Salina native, Gebhart is a Des Moines-based woodcut printmaking, paper artist, and founder of DinoCat Studio. Growing up, she spent her spare time at the Salina Art Center, taking as many classes as she could fit in every summer. Gebhart credits those early experiences with her Salina art teachers and mentors for the inspiration to become a professional artist.

Gebhart also soaked up art at the Smoky Hill River Festival.

"I absolutely loved going to Artyopolis as a kid. My parents would pretty much set me loose in that area of the festival and let me go wild," she said.

After graduating from Salina Central High School, Gebhart went on to receive her BFA in graphic design with a concentration in printmaking from Drake University in Des Moines.

Gebhart's practice centers around the tactile process of creating her artwork, carving scenes out of wood blocks, and building images up from dimensional folded paper. While her background in graphic design plays an influential role in her creative process, Gebhart said that she favors the hands-on process of printmaking and paper art. 

She explained, "Working with my hands to create something out of raw materials has always fascinated me, and I'm constantly challenging myself to try different techniques, methods, and subject matters to ensure my design style continues to evolve and grow."

"What first attracted me to printmaking was the physicality of the relief process," said Gebhart. "I enjoy using gouges to cut through the material and methodically pulling each print by hand. There is something sculptural about the hard edges and bold lines of traditional black-and-white reduction printmaking. As I've become more experienced with printmaking, that attraction has now evolved to using new methods and practices to see what stories I can create.

"My printmaking explores whimsical themes and aims to draw a viewer into a unique experience," she explained. "I create from my imagination rather than what I see in front of me. Each piece tells a story but leaves room for an individual to create their own story based on their interaction with the work. What began as a hobby to infuse my life with more creativity has turned into an exploration of what can be done with simple tools, accessible materials, and a desire to create meaningful work for others to enjoy."

Her work will be featured in the upcoming We Are Makers bi-annual publication, showcasing makers from all over the globe. Upcoming shows include the Waukee Arts Festival, the Beaux-Arts Fair, and the Smoky Hill River Festival.

Salina Fire honors retiring Battalion Chief Scott Abker

Stiefel Theatre Executive Director Jane Gates announced this afternoon that the theatre's COVID-19 policy is being removed. Following is a statement from Gates.

The Stiefel Theatre in Salina, KS has removed the COVID-19 mandate for attendance to shows.&nbsp; Going forward we will be following the local government guidelines and hoping that things continue to improve as many artists have now removed their COVID restrictions.&nbsp;

A few artists will continue to have specific COVID requirements that will be handled on a show-by-show basis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At this time the only two shows we have currently announced requiring proof of a negative COVID test or proof of vaccination are Jay Leno on April 8, and Patty Griffin on May 4.&nbsp;

The Stiefel website will have information about which shows have COVID requirements on individual artist's pages. The official Stiefel website can be found at:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stiefeltheatre.org/" target="_blank">www.stiefeltheatre.org</a>.

We want to thank people for their understanding and support of the Stiefel during this difficult time, especially those who were understanding of our need for this policy. While we have been so grateful to have shows back after being closed for 16 months, we also have been saddened to see the number of deaths from COVID and the difficulty of mandating COVID protocols to help keep people safe. A California man was injured when his SUV rear-ended a Kansas Department of Transportation plow truck on Interstate 70 east of Salina.

Jonathan Ho Siuhang, 40, of Arcadia, Calif., was westbound on I-70 approximately six miles east of the N. Ohio Street exit at Salina when his 2005 Honda SUV rear-ended a westbound KDOT plow truck, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported Thursday. The wreck occurred at approximately 7:05 a.m. Thursday.

Ho Siuhang was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with suspected serious injuries, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol report. 

The driver of the KDOT plow truck, Derek Jon Buss, 41, of Abilene, had no apparent injuries, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.

After hours of falling snow, the most recent winter storm is moving out of our area, leaving in its wake a good amount of snow.

Snow totals varied throughout the area. In Salina, four to five inches of snow have been reported, covering early spring flowers such as daffodils and crocus.

The anticipated snow totals and the timing of the snowfall prompted a number of area school districts, higher education institutions, and public services to close or cancel on Thursday. A couple of school districts also canceled for Friday.

Storm moves on; snow provides much needed moisture for area

Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred Wednesday afternoon in south-central Salina.

An 18-year-old Salina woman was southbound on Larson Street when the red 2014 Ford Fiesta she was driving was hit by a gray SUV of unknown make or model that was westbound on Charlotte Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The SUV then fled the scene.

Police looking for gray SUV involved in hit-and-run wreck

A German man who was determined to get the woman he wanted was arrested in Salina Wednesday night on multiple charges including criminal threat and stalking.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that an 18-year-old Saline County woman met Falk Meier Berndt, 22, of Hanover, Germany, online. From her perspective, there was no relationship and she expressed that, but according to Soldan, Meier Berndt had other plans.

Meier Berndt flew to the United States and during the past week had been in Saline County trying to find the local woman. 

Meier Berndt had a list of things to do while he was in Saline County, Soldan said. He went to the woman's church. He also went to her work place at a time she happened to be there. Meier Berndt allegedly told the woman that he was going to kill her 22-year-old boyfriend, marry her, and have children with her, Soldan said.

The woman's father reported the work place incident to the Saline County Sheriff's Office. Deputies also received additional information from the woman. 

Deputies located Meier Berndt at a local motel and arrested him on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

Meier Berndt had a list of things to do while he was in Saline County, Soldan said. He went to the woman's church. He also went to her work place at a time she happened to be there. K-State Salina Open House event returns March 26

Being a&nbsp;consumer&nbsp;probably isn’t something you like to think about. That word alone can conjure up images of an apocalyptic, dystopian, WALL-E-esque universe where humans are materialistic, wasteful and greedy. But let’s put that sad image aside for a moment and think some positive thoughts.

Like it or not, you’re a consumer. Companies worldwide spend&nbsp;billions&nbsp;of dollars every year marketing to you. Which means that every day, you’re exposed to&nbsp;thousands&nbsp;of ads competing for your dollars. But you’re not powerless. By simply paying attention, doing some research, and enduring a little bit of delayed gratification, you can take back control as a consumer.

That’s why March 15, World Consumer Rights Day will be recognized around the planet. And it’s not just another random holiday (looking at you National Panda Day). World Consumer Rights Day is a global event aiming to raise awareness and advocacy for consumer rights and needs.

Let me break it down for you.&nbsp;Consumer rights&nbsp;simply means anyone who buys anything—literally anything—has the right to have information about the quality, purity, price and standards of what they’re buying.<a href="https://nationaltoday.com/world-consumer-rights-day/" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;The Consumers International organization puts it like this:

“[Consumer rights is]&nbsp;about our right to access the basic things we need to live, including food, shelter and safe drinking water. It’s about making sure your new&nbsp;television&nbsp;won’t break down after three months, that your car has the features&nbsp;and technology to keep you safe,&nbsp;and that the data companies collect about you online isn’t lost or stolen."<a href="https://www.consumersinternational.org/who-we-are/consumer-rights/" target="_blank">2</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;

World Consumer Rights Day is about changing that story of the materialistic consumer we talked about earlier, taking&nbsp;back control of our rights, and becoming smart spenders. Now, that sounds nice, but how do you go from falling for the traps to being in charge of your financial destiny? I’ve got three tips for you.

The first thing you should do when considering a purchase—especially one that falls outside of basic life necessities—is ask yourself what sales incentives could be at play and who’s really benefiting. You’re always being marketed to. And frankly, with all the research and neuroscience at their fingertips, companies know you better than you know yourself. Marketing isn’t a bad&nbsp;thing, but you need to be able to see through it and spend because it’s&nbsp;your&nbsp;decision—not because of slick marketing.

Where a product is in the store or on a shelf, how the brand makes you&nbsp;feel, time-sensitive sales or promotions, convenient payment methods, financing tactics—these are common traps for the everyday consumer. Remember: Businesses don’t offer a sale where they don’t come out on top. And everything is 100% off if you don’t buy it. How’s that for a deal?

The second tip is to make sure you’re&nbsp;confident&nbsp;about the purchase you’re making. For starters, do you understand the terms and conditions? You may not read all the fine print, but look out for the biggies: return policies, warranties, and proof that it’s a reputable researcher—not some kind of scam.

If it’s a big purchase, have you done your research? Are the reviews trustworthy? Companies will use positive reviews on their own website (genius, right?), so look at independent sources for product reviews. And some spaces, like crypto, are still too new to be properly regulated.&nbsp;So if you’re looking to spend money in a crypto or an investing app, see what their customer service is like before you dive in too deep. A good filter to use is this: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

My last tip is to know where to go if things go wrong. If you have a consumer complaint and customer service is unhelpful, take a deep breath and reach out to your friends at the Better Business Bureau. They help navigate marketplace disputes and&nbsp;work with law enforcement agencies&nbsp;on scams or frauds. Likewise, the Federal Trade Commission will take your&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/types-of-fraud" target="_blank">fraud and identity theft cases</a>. Be sure to report any scams, fraud or criminal activity to your local law enforcement and your bank.&nbsp;They can help if you run into scams, but at the end of the day, what happens to your money is up to&nbsp;you.&nbsp;

Taking back control as a consumer is about believing that&nbsp;you&nbsp;are in charge. I want you to stand up for yourself financially and stop letting life just happen&nbsp;to&nbsp;you. You can play defense by paying attention to marketing. You can fight back by making sure you’re confident about your purchases. And you can exercise your rights by reaching out to the people out there who can help.

ASSARIA - A small earthquake shook part of southern Saline County Wednesday afternoon.

A 2.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday southeast of Assaria. The quake was centered south of the Smoky Hill River between S. Holmes Road and S. Ohio Street.

Our staff would like to thank everyone who supported us as we navigated the uncharted waters of a global pandemic. The hours were long. The days were tough. Tears were shed at home and in the office.

We were often the bearers of bad news, the unwelcome phone call. We asked you to stay home, to miss work, to pull your kids out of school, to cancel your travel plans. We asked you to disrupt your life and to have faith that by doing so you were potentially saving lives.

We will never know how many were saved from sickness or spared from death by the actions you took to mitigate the spread, only the number of those who were not as fortunate.

Our public reporting is ending but our fight for the health of our community never will. It has, and continues to be, an honor to serve you.

COVID Case Update for Saline County Another 18 people have had COVID-19 positive test results reported to the Saline County Health Department since our last update on Wednesday.

The Salina Regional Health Center reports that 2 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

There are 34 known active cases of COVID-19 in Saline County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We are ending our regular COVID reporting, and here's why

Today is the final edition of "COVID by the Numbers" from the Saline County Health Department. The Saline County COVID dashboard will be removed this week as well.

While our public reporting is ending, the County&nbsp;Health&nbsp;Department will continue to provide COVID services as needed and as we are able.

Since the pandemic began, much of our staffing, time, and resources have been diverted to combat the pandemic. Unfortunately, many long-standing and valuable programs provided by the&nbsp;Health&nbsp;Department have not received the attention they merit during that time. Our staff is looking forward to a renewed focus on programs and services unrelated to COVID.

The goal of public reporting was to give the public an accurate understanding of COVID in our county. Welcome changes like ubiquitous, reliable at-home testing means reported data is less reflective of the overall situation. Additionally, the Kansas Department of&nbsp;Health&nbsp;and Environment has taken over all new COVID case investigations.

Dickinson County delinquent tax sale attracts large crowd

ELLSWORTH - A longtime Salina elementary school principal has been selected as the next superintendent for USD 327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo.

The USD 327 Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo Board of Education announced this afternoon that Deena Hilbig has been selected to lead the district. She is to begin her duties as superintendent on July 1.

Hilbig currently serves as principal at Meadowlark Ridge Elementary School in Salina, a position she has held since 2006.

"I look forward to serving the staff, students, and patrons of USD 327. Having grown up in a town similar in size I understand the importance of community. I will work to support our staff and students, providing leadership to help us continue to grow and develop our youth," Hilbig said in a news release from USD 327.

Hilbig has spent her entire educational career in Salina USD 305 schools. Prior to serving as principal at Meadowlark, Hilbig was a teacher at Whittier Elementary School and Coronado Elementary School. She also was a lead teacher at Sunset Elementary School and Coronado Elementary School.

Additionally, Hilbig has provided advanced leadership development and has mentored first- and second-year principals throughout central Kansas for the Kansas Educational Leadership Institute (KELI) at Kansas State University.

On February 24th, 2022, at 9:01 PM, officers responded to a residence in Salina. A report had been received from a Crisis Hotline that a 58-year old man was suicidal, and had possession of a large knife. Eventually the officers learned that the man had recently lost his wife.

Officers contacted the man, and through a storm door they were able to see he had a liquor bottle and a large fillet knife, and was clearly upset. He did confirm he wanted to harm himself. Officers remained outside, speaking to the man, until they could get the man to put down the knife and exit the home. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Both officers have previously attended department training on De-escalation and Tactical Communications, and Mental Health and Law Enforcement. We commended Officers Christmas and Grisham for the tactics, patience and use of their training to resolve this issue peaceably. 22-5271.
