Police are looking for a man believed to have tried to break into two north Salina businesses early this morning.

An officer on patrol at approximately 1:10 a.m. Wednesday heard an audible alarm coming from C&amp;C Auto Sales, 732 N. Broadway Boulevard. 

When he pulled in, he saw a man running north away from the business, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer attempted to chase the man, but lost sight of him and returned to the business. There, he found a broken wooden door to the business. Damage was estimated at $300.

While checking C&amp;C Auto and looking in the area for the suspect, police also discovered a shattered glass door at Hometown Outdoor Power, 821 N. Broadway Boulevard, Forrester said.

The suspect is described as being White or Hispanic and wearing a dark green jacket and dark pants or shorts. Police are checking surveillance from both locations for additional information, Forrester said.

Students on the&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;have elected new leaders of the campus's Student Governing Association, or SGA, for the 2022-2023 school&nbsp;

Augie Chapas, junior in unmanned aircraft design and integration,&nbsp;Topeka, and his running mate Caden Brond, junior in professional pilot,&nbsp;Houston, Texas,&nbsp;have been elected by the campus's student body as president and vice president, respectively. The duo will represent the students of K-State Salina and lead the Student Governing Association in discussing and addressing issues of campus concern. "I have really enjoyed being a part of SGA," Brond said. "It's nice to be a part of the cooperation between the K-State Salina administration and the students to provide a voice for our fellow students in matters that affect them." The Student Governing Association represents full-time and part-time undergraduate students at K-State Salina. The group consists of a cabinet and senators who discuss and vote on issues important to the campus's student body. The student-run organization meets weekly and encourages attendance from any student, faculty or staff member. Chapas and Brond both point to the Student Governing Association's involvement in several key projects and initiatives over the past few years that have benefited the K-State Salina students. Some of the accomplishments include negotiating with the administration to construct a new sidewalk and implementing a new on-campus self-serve coffee bar. With these recent successes, Chapas and Brond hope to continue the momentum. The executive officers' biggest priority is to try to encourage greater student involvement post-pandemic in not just Student Governing Association but also in on-campus clubs as well. "We have a very strong, active and passionate membership in student government," Chapas said. "We are looking to continue growing representation in the SGA Senate, to fill senate openings and get more perspectives of what is important to the students. The more student involvement that we have, the more likely we are to hear some new, fresh ideas." The K-State Salina Student Governing Association provides students the opportunity to not only get involved on campus, but also helps grow key skills in communication, leadership and learning how to function in a democratic and representative process. "The lessons that our students learn in SGA are immeasurable in their learning experiences," said Josh Doak, K-State Salina's co-SGA advisor and director of Career Services. "Learning how to better use their voice to create a positive impact is something that they can utilize for the rest of their lives in not just their future career, but in their communities as well. This also gives them the chance to hear ideas that might be different from their own and to work with others through the process of understanding." Chapas and Brond will replace 2021-2022 student body president Jon Martin, senior in computer systems technology,&nbsp;Bennington,&nbsp;and vice president Eric Webb, senior, computer systems technology,&nbsp;Wichita.

GYPSUM - A minor earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County Tuesday.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude quake struck at 5:19 p.m. Tuesday southwest of Gypsum. It was centered north of E. Hedberg Road between S. Whitmore Road and S. Niles Road.

County Farm Bureaus across Kansas marked Earth Day last week in classrooms, farm fields, fairgrounds, pastures, recycling centers and other assorted locations across the state. They helped schoolchildren understand that growing food and caring for natural resources go hand in hand. &nbsp; Though they may not label themselves environmentalists, farmers and ranchers are some of the finest ecologist, preservationists and conservationists in the world. While we’re all dependent on the earth, we don’t all get the close-up experience of what Mother Nature has to offer like agriculturists do day in and day out. Certainly, there are those who disagree with my belief that farmers and ranchers are dedicated caretakers of our natural resources. You know the type. They make dire claims about the future of our planet and point to modern agriculture as a significant culprit in a bleaker tomorrow. I’ll go ahead and put my cards on the table for why I believe they’re wrong even though I buy the premise that our atmosphere is warming and human activity is contributing to that phenomenon. Where we differ is I don’t believe it’s necessary to discard the progress we’ve made since the industrial revolution based on the projection of what the planet could maybe, potentially look like decades in the future. “Washington Post” columnist Sunny Bunch once observed that well-meaning but overly enthusiastic eco-activists are easy marks for caricature on the basis their beliefs are genuine. “Environmentalists make a useful villain because their malevolence can be obscured by a patina of reasonableness,” he wrote. “Global warming and other manmade problems are going to end the world if we don’t do something — so just about anything is justified! But their villainy resonates with the masses because they actually do want to make life worse for people, for the most part.” For the “villains,” obvious sources of carbon dioxide or methane like transportation, electrical generation and agriculture should be severely limited if not eliminated to preserve the future. Do you fly or drive? Stop that! Do you enjoy stepping into an air conditioned building on a warm, humid day? Don’t! Do you enjoy consuming beef, pork, chicken and other animal proteins? You should move to a plant-based diet or consider these wonderful recipes featuring bugs! While I admire their sincerity and believe their proposed solution would work in theory, it has failed in reality. Changing human behavior is hard to do even when it results in a positive outcome relatively quickly, like quitting smoking or a consistent exercise program. Convincing people to give up conveniences today for some vague improvement decades down the line is impossible. Like with so many other things in life, the answer isn’t strict prohibition of desirable activities that also come with negative side effects. The solution isn’t to get rid of the desirable activities, it’s to address the side effects. One of the best examples in recent history of successfully achieving this is the reduction of atmospheric sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide by 93 percent and 87 percent, respectively. This year’s Earth Day slogan was “Invest in Our Planet,” and that’s exactly the course we should be on. There’s not one technology that will reverse the side effects of the past two-plus centuries of progress. Instead, it will be a combination of ideas, both new and old, that will preserve our planet. Investing in earth is a lot like farming. The little steps we take today won’t show up tomorrow, next week or even next month. But to have a fruitful harvest, those initial steps are a requirement, even if our planet-level growing season is measured in decades and centuries rather than from planting to harvest.

Today is Wednesday, April 27, the 117th day of 2022. There are 248 days left in the year.

On April 27, 1994, former President Richard M. Nixon was remembered at an outdoor funeral service attended by all five of his successors at the Nixon presidential library in Yorba Linda, California.

In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed by natives in the Philippines.

In 1810, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote one of his most famous piano compositions, the Bagatelle in A-minor.

In 1813, the Battle of York took place in Upper Canada during the War of 1812 as a U.S. force defeated the British garrison in present-day Toronto before withdrawing.

In 1865, the steamer Sultana, carrying freed Union prisoners of war, exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee; death toll estimates vary from 1,500 to 2,000.

About 20 hours after he fatally shot a state trooper, a Delaware man was shot to death following an overnight standoff with police. Texas A&amp;M defensive end Myles Garrett was picked first overall by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Draft.

One year ago: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased its guidelines on the wearing of masks outdoors, saying fully vaccinated Americans didn't need to cover their faces anymore unless they were in a big crowd of strangers; those who were unvaccinated could also go outside without masks in some situations. An upcoming Saline County concert will benefit the Kansas Honor Flight program and a homeless veterans program.

James Otto, Jared Blake, and Bigg Vinny Hickerson will be playing an acoustic concert beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at Tumblweed, 5680 W. Old Highway 40 (the old Augustine's Furniture and former Brightbuilt Hotrods building), a short five-minute drive west of Salina.

Additionally, booths of interest to veterans will be open on site beginning at 4 p.m. Food for the event will be catered by The Culinary School at the Armory in Salina, according to information from Tumblweed.

"The proceeds from this event will go to two different purposes that are really special. The first one being the Kansas Honor Flight, which is an all-volunteer organization that works to honor Kansas veterans of  World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War by providing them with an all-expense-paid journey to visit their memorials in Washington D.C., and the second one being the homeless veterans program to find a home and put a roof over their heads," Tumblweed noted in a news release.

Saturday concert to benefit veterans programs

It took “Just One Look” for Vlad Vizireanu to know that conducting was in his future.

When the Romania native was about 3 years old, his parents bought a vinyl record for him, a recording of popular American singer Linda Ronstadt’s rendition of the song “Just One Look.”

“My parents put headphones on me that were three times the size of my head, and I played that record nonstop, basically bobbing my head back and forth to the music,” Vizireanu said. “It was my first experience as a conductor. Music has always been a very physical process for me.”

Vizireanu is the fifth and final candidate auditioning for the position of conductor and music director of the Salina Symphony. His concert, “Symphonic Dances,” will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

The program will include a performance of Rachmaninoff’s dynamic “Symphonic Dances,” a contemporary composition entitled “Mothership” by composer Mason Bates, and Tchaikovsky’s passionate “Piano Concerto No. 1,” featuring guest pianist Lorraine Min.

Vizireanu and Min will give a pre-concert talk at 3 p.m. May 1 in the Stiefel Theatre’s Watson Room. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.

After Vizireanu’s concert comes the most difficult part of the Salina Symphony’s 2021-2022 season: deciding which of the five finalists – Devin Patrick Hughes, Melisse Brunet, Yaniv Segal, Yaniv Attar or Vlad Vizireanu – will be Symphony’s permanent conductor and music director.

Adrienne Allen, executive director of the Salina Symphony, expects the decision to be made in early May.

“The search season and the privilege of working with each of our talented finalists has been an incredible experience for our staff, musicians and audience,” she said. “We are thrilled to be nearing the end of the process and look forward to the next era under our new artistic leader.”

Although he has conducted professional orchestras worldwide, Vizireanu said he was ready to settle down in one location and “make an orchestra my own.”

“It was great to travel on a plane all the time and conduct without any responsibility,” he said. “But I’m getting to the point where I want to share my experience and skills with a group of people that I enjoy making music with. That was the impression I got with the Salina Symphony, that it seemed like a close-knit group of people who enjoy the process of making music together.”

Vizireanu hopes to make a memorable impression both with Salina Symphony musicians and audience members during his time here.

“I definitely feel like I’m anything but boring when I’m on the podium,” he said. “I think I’m going to be able to get some amazing sounds from the orchestra. For me, there’s nothing greater than going into a coffee house and have people come up and say, ‘that was a great concert last night.’”

While researching the Salina Symphony, Vizireanu said he also was impressed by the organization’s commitment to their youth orchestras and to the development of young musicians.

“There’s no bigger priority than getting youth involved and making music a major part of their lives,” he said. “It’s something you have to advocate for.”

Vizireanu was born in Romania and moved to the United States as a child with his mother in 1990.

“After the Soviet Union fell, it wasn’t the safest place to be anymore or the best place for a kid to have a brighter future,” he said. “So we moved to Los Angeles.”

Envisioning music as a career, Vizireanu, who also is a pianist and singer, received a master’s degree in conducting from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and a doctorate from Arizona State University. He also studied musicology and piano performance at the University of California Los Angeles.

A regular presence on the conducting competition circuit, Vizireanu came to international attention after winning second prize in the 2013 Cadaques Conducting Competition in a televised concert in Barcelona. He made his conducting debut with the London Symphony Orchestra as second prize winner in the 2016 Donatella Flick Competition.

Vizireanu also was invited to be one of 14 conductors, out of 400 applicants worldwide, to participate in the renowned Mahler Conducting Competition with the Bamberg Symphony.

Now a regular guest conductor in the U.S. and Europe, Vizireanu recently was appointed principal guest conductor of the Ploiesti Philharmonic in Romania. He also served as music director of the Knox Galesburg Symphony in Illinois and the North Shore Symphony in New York.

An advocate of new music, Vizireanu is founder and executive director of Impulse New Music Festival, which brings together young composers and instrumentalists to study and perform new compositions.

While working with such diverse orchestras and music ensembles has been an exhilarating experience for Vizireanu, he said it also puts a lot of pressure on a young conductor.

“Fully professional orchestras have some of the best players in the world who can do anything you ask of them, but because they’re at such a high level, they know they’re good,” he said with a laugh. “It demands a lot of a young conductor.”

Working with acclaimed pianist Lorraine Min as a soloist on the Tchaikovsky piano concerto is a special treat for Vizireanu, who missed a previous opportunity to work with her while guest conducting an orchestra in March 2020.

“We know what happened then,” he said. “It got shut down, and I figured that was it.”

Born in Victoria and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Min studied on full scholarship at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. She received her master’s and doctoral degrees from the famed Juilliard School in New York City.

Min was the top ranked Canadian pianist at age 19 in the Harveys Leeds and Busoni International Competitions, and laureate in the Van Cliburn Competition. She has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, India, South America and the United Kingdom.

Being able to collaborate with Min on the Tchaikovsky piano concerto, Vizireanu said, was “one of the best pieces of news I received” when planning his Salina concert.

Vizireanu said it is exhilarating to conduct again after so many live music events were canceled because of the COVID pandemic, and he hopes audiences will return to support dedicated orchestras like the Salina Symphony.

“The arts are more than a luxury,” he said. “They’re a crucial part of your life, even if you may not know it. I’m thrilled to be able to express myself as a musician again and to work with the Salina Symphony.”

ABILENE -Staff from the Dickinson County Appraiser’s Office will be out re-inspecting some properties in the coming weeks.

“Property owners in east Abilene and Solomon: You may be seeing us in your part of town,” said Dickinson County Appraiser Lisa Berg.

The Kansas Department of Revenue’s Property Valuation Division (PVD) requires the appraiser’s office to annually re-inspect approximately 17 percent of the county’s parcels, Berg explained.

Working in teams, appraisal personnel drive vehicles bearing the Dickinson County logo and wear county identification badges.

For onsite inspections personnel will check the listings, measurements and characteristics of all buildings on each property and update photos of the property.

They also will interview the property owner or resident, if available. If no one is home, a yellow card will be left to notify of the visit.

If there have been changes to the property since the last visit, people are asked to notify the appraiser’s office at (785) 263-4418.

Besides parcel maintenance inspections, other routine work is performed, including the review of recent sale properties, parcels having new construction and torn down or destroyed buildings.

By checking your&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/free-credit-reports">credit reports</a>,&nbsp;you’ll be able to see if someone is misusing your personal information to run up charges on your credit cards, get new credit or open a new account in your name, and steal your identity. The sooner you spot this fraud, the sooner you can take action to stop the harm and correct the errors. Follow these steps:

Ten Kansas employers have registered for the second annual&nbsp;Give Back Kansas Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to engage Kansans in employer-supported volunteering.&nbsp;This annual event is a partnership between the Kansas Volunteer Commission and Volunteer Kansas and runs from April 18 through June 10, 2022.

The Give Back Kansas&nbsp;Challenge&nbsp;is an opportunity for employees to receive recognition by tracking and reporting their volunteer hours. Registered organizations will compete to win a $1,000 grant from Volunteer Kansas. The grant will be donated to the charity of organization’s choice.

“We are thrilled to have 10 businesses register to compete in the challenge,” said Nola Brown, executive director of Volunteer Kansas. “We hope participation will grow each year as employers realize the value of serving their communities alongside their employees and encourage them to volunteer.”

●Kansas Aviation Museum Inc. – Wichita

●Kansas State Department of Education – Topeka

●United Way of Greater Topeka – Topeka

There is no cost to participate. Businesses will be separated into three size categories (large, medium and small) depending upon the number of employees. Organizations will record their volunteer hours through an online portal. Winners will be selected from each size category by determining the average number of volunteer hours per business completed during the challenge period.

Red flag warnings issued for area counties

A traffic stop Monday night resulted in the arrest of a Salina man on multiple requested charges, including a firearms charge.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that an officer on patrol at approximately 9:45 p.m. Monday in the 1100 block of W. Elm Street noticed a white Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by Kyle Nelson, 38, of Salina, who was known to have a suspended driver's license. Additionally, the license plate allegedly was not lit and the turn signal not used at the intersection of W. Ash Street and N. Chicago Street.

The officer stopped the pickup, and when he made contact with the driver, he reported seeing an open bottle of whiskey inside, however, it was later determined that Nelson, was not impaired at that time, Forrester said.

During a search of the pickup, the officer also located a .22 caliber handgun, he added.

Nelson was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Traffic stop results in arrest of Salina man

A local man wanted on multiple Salina Municipal Court warrants was arrested Monday morning after a traffic stop in central Salina.

An officer on patrol at approximately 8:30 a.m. Monday in the 200 block of W. Crawford Street noticed a 2005 Ford Escape that had an expired license plate, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer was able to stop the vehicle in the 500 block of S. Ninth Street.

Forrester said the driver allegedly initially identified himself with a false name and date of birth, however, the officer was able to identify him as Dalton Reinbold, 24, of Salina.

Reinbold was known to have seven active Salina Municipal Court warrants for probation violations.

Forrester said that in addition to the warrants, Reinbold was arrested on the following requested charges.

Additionally, the Escape was towed, Forrester said.

The Greater Salina Community Foundation hosted Salina’s 11th annual Match Madness giving day on March 24, at Salina Fieldhouse. In 24 hours, over $555,000 was raised for 89 area nonprofit organizations through donations and bonus prizes.

A total of 920 unique donors contributed a record-breaking total of $556,452.18 through 2,691 gifts. This is the highest total dollar amount and number of gifts raised in the event’s history.

“This day always amazes me beyond belief,” said Jessica Martin, president and executive director of the foundation. “It is humbling to witness the growing generosity of our donors and the enthusiasm of our nonprofits. Our community is blessed to have such a great team working together to make an impact.”

The Foundation awarded $8,630 in bonus prizes to 77 organizations who participated in the Bill Grevas Memorial Nonprofit Free Throw Contest, which was sponsored by the Salina Regional Health Foundation, and the Half-Court Contest, which was sponsored by BeWealth. Each participant was given one minute to shoot free throws, and every shot made was worth $10 for their representative organization. Throughout the day, 13 participants earned the maximum $100 prize for their efforts. The Half-Court Contest provided each non-profit the opportunity to make a half-court shot (in 2 attempts). 

Each nonprofit that made a half-court shot received $100 plus the opportunity to enter the shoot out for $1,000. Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum, St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Parish, DVACK, At Stake Ministries, KU School of MedicineSalina, and AMBUCS-Salina AM Breakfast Bandits all received $100 for a made shot and AMBUCS-Salina AM Breakfast Bandits received an additional $1,000 as the winner of the shootout.

Following the event, three bonus grants were awarded to participating nonprofits. Rolling Hills Zoo “Most Donors-1st Place,” received $750 as the nonprofit who had the most donors. Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank “Most Donors-2nd Place,” received $500 as the nonprofit that had the second most donors. The Temple-Salina Innovation Foundation received “Most Improved,” awarded to the organization that received a higher number of gifts this year than in 2021. 

New in 2022, an “Around the World” Booth contest was held to encourage visitors to visit as many nonprofit booths as possible. Each visitor that visited 5 or more booths was entered to win a prize drawn at random. Emily Paige was the winner of the first annual “Around the World” Booth Contest, and received a Match Madness gift basket, plus GSCF doubled all of her donations she made at the Match Madness event!

The Foundation matched gifts proportionally, up to 47%, from a pool of $250,000. Together, Match Madness donations, bonus prizes, and matching funds combine for a total impact of $801,582 for the Salina community.

On Wednesday, Bryant and Bryant Construction of Halstead will begin removing and replacing patches of deteriorated concrete pavement on E. North Street between N. Front Street and N. Ohio Street.

 Traffic on E. North Street will be maintained during construction and minor delays should be expected. The repair locations are generally short. 

During pavement removal and replacement preparation, motorists in the obstructed lane will yield to traffic in the unobstructed lane. 

During concrete pours, full closures will likely occur for short durations. 

Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes during construction to optimize their and the workers' safety. 

The work is expected to be complete by June 6.

 The $470,000 project also includes repairs at the S. Ohio Street/Belmont Boulevard/E. Wayne Avenue intersection and is a holdover of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2021 street maintenance capital improvement program.
