TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued two public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.&nbsp;

A wind-whipped electrical line is being blamed for a fire that destroyed a house in Salina Wednesday afternoon.

No humans were injured in the blaze in the 600 block of Park Street, but a cat that lived in the residence died and another is missing, Jeff Daily, fire prevention officer for the Salina Fire Department, told Salina Post this afternoon. Firefighters attempted CPR on the cat, Daily said, but it nonetheless perished.

According to Daily, the main power line going into the basement of the house was blown around by the wind, causing it to arc. The arcing powerline then sparked the blaze by setting the outside of the house on fire.

The house, valued at $40,000, was destroyed, he said.

OCCK and its Solution Outreach Center have scheduled the second annual&nbsp;Durable&nbsp;Medical Equipment Recycling Week.

The collection event is scheduled to begin Monday and last until May 11.

OCCK urgently needs hospital beds, scooters, bedside commodes, bath transfer benches, walkers, and patient lifts. All donations will be sanitized and repurposed for children and adults with mobility needs.

 Anyone from Saline, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Ottawa, Cloud, Jewell, Republic, Dickinson, and Mitchell counties with used&nbsp;durable&nbsp;medical equipment that they would like to donate may call 785-827-9383 and request a pick-up or drop-off appointment.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Last year's event produced 45 donated pieces of medical equipment. In 2021, OCCK provided 176 pieces of donated medical equipment to help children and adults with mobility needs.

The City of Salina has announced the promotion of Brett Lamer to deputy parks and recreation director.

Lamer had been serving as parks operation manager since September 2017, according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/salina.ks.gov">city Facebook page</a>.

“Following a national search and selection process, Brett emerged as our top candidate. Brett is well rounded and experienced with park maintenance, managing budgets, projects and overall knowledge of the administration of the Parks and Recreation department. City of Salina announces Parks and Rec promotion for Lamer

The Salina, Kan., man accused of causing the traffic death of Alliance resident Blythe Boness appeared in Box Butte County District Court Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ryan McElroy, 36, of Salina, entered a plea of not guilty to felony charges of manslaughter and motor vehicle homicide as well as misdemeanor counts of third offense drunk driving and willful reckless driving.

McElroy remains incarcerated in the Box Butte County Jail on 10% of a $100,000 bond.

His next court appearance is set for June 29 at 1:30 pm.

The vehicle McElroy was driving collided head on with Boness on April 10 a few miles east of Alliance on Highway 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Boness died at the scene while McElroy was flown to the Scottsbluff hospital for treatment.

Minor quake shakes part of Marion County Thursday morning

One driver was arrested and another injured when a car rear-ended a motorcycle in north Salina late Wednesday morning.

Lisa Page, 52, of Salina, was northbound on N. Ohio Street in a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze when she struck the back of a northbound 1977 Kawasaki motorcycle that was at the intersection with E. North Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Upon impact, Edward Mueller, 66, of Salina, was thrown from the motorcycle. He was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center for observation, Forrester said.

The wreck occurred just before noon Wednesday.

The Cruze sustained front-end damage and the Kawasaki rear-end damage, he said. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Page was arrested on a requested charge of driving while revoked, Forrester said.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a single employee was working at the AT&amp;T Store, 2596 S. Ninth Street, Wednesday afternoon when two men entered the store and began asking the employee questions about cellphones. A short time later, two women entered the store and made their way to the back of the store while the men kept the AT&amp;T employee distracted in the front.

The women allegedly stole more than 30 cellphones, including iPhones, and a number of smart watches. Additionally, the store's safe was open in the back. Forrester said the store was to get a complete list of what was stolen to police later today.

The store employee described the men as possibly being Middle Eastern, Forrester said. One of the men was described as having a heavy accent and being about 5'5" and heavyset. He was wearing a ball cap and a black t-shirt with a red-rhinestone teddy bear on it. The other man was described as being six-foot tall, heavyset, and wearing multi-colored clothing and a ball cap.

The only description provided for the women was that one wore a headscarf and a long skirt.

Burnout is a feeling of exhaustion, frustration or being overwhelmed that happens when stress and toxicity build up over time. It’s when we put so much effort into taking care of&nbsp;everything—without rest, recognition or results—that we drain ourselves of energy and sap our emotional and physical wellness.

Gallup did a study of almost 7,500 full-time employees. In it, they found about two-thirds had experienced burnout at work.<a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/237059/employee-burnout-part-main-causes.aspx" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp; So, how do people get&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/should-i-quit-my-job-quiz" target="_blank">burned out?</a>

When your job doesn’t matter to you, you begin to believe your work doesn’t matter. Then, you start believing&nbsp;you&nbsp;don’t matter.

Being around poor leadership, gossiping coworkers or teammates who don’t trust one another is draining. No matter how hard you try to have a good attitude, that kind of day after day negativity will crush your spirit.

Maybe you like your line of work, but you feel like you’ve hit a wall because you’re doing the same tasks day in and day out. When you’re&nbsp;not challenged at work, motivation evaporates.

You might be feeling the effects of burnout because&nbsp;you're overworked. Staying late each night, and wrecking your work-life balance is enough to make anyone’s health suffer.

Everyone needs to feel appreciated. That doesn’t mean you need constant awards, applause and pats on the back. But if you’ve gone months, or even years, without having your hard work recognized, that starts to hurt.

Burnout doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some people experience more mental and emotional symptoms of burnout. Others have a more physical reaction with their stress and exhaustion. Here are a few signs to look for:

Remember, too, there could be other things going on that contribute to these symptoms. Talk with a trusted doctor, counselor or pastor&nbsp;for more guidance.

If you’re truly burned out, your body&nbsp;and&nbsp;spirit will need time to heal. You can’t expect a weekend getaway or a good night’s sleep to fix problems that have been around for months or longer. Recovering from burnout is a process that requires effort, time and maybe more than one approach. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Understanding your&nbsp;why&nbsp;means getting clarity on your purpose at work. This is important because when you don't know&nbsp;why&nbsp;you do something, it’s hard to push through when things get hard. To rediscover your why (or discover it for the first time), ask yourself questions like:

●Do I connect with the results my work produces?

●Am I tapping into what I do best (my talents) and what I love to do most (my passions)?

Talk with your leader before making any major changes. If you have too much on your plate, ask your leader to help you prioritize and set boundaries. If people around you are gossiping or stabbing each other in the back, bring it to your leader.

Sometimes you just need to adjust your attitude, and see your job in a new light. There may be times you need to stay in a job you don’t love longer than you want, because you’re hunting for a better opportunity. In that case, your current job is funding your future.

Maybe you love the company you work for, but there’s a different role that better suits&nbsp;your skills and passions.&nbsp;If there are any open internal positions you’re interested in, and know you’d be a great fit for, talk with your leader about making a transition.

You have&nbsp;to&nbsp;care for your body and spirit&nbsp;if you want to heal from burnout, but you don’t need to do a complete health overhaul to start feeling better. Take tiny steps each day to get your wellness on track:

●Eat healthy meals, or at least get an extra serving of fruit and vegetables.

●Add daily movement, like walking, stretching or yoga to help relieve stress.

●Spend a few minutes soaking up sunshine, or laughing with a friend.

 ●Pray, meditate or journal to get your thoughts out of your head.

If you can’t do what you love in your own town, it might be time to consider relocating. Before you make a bold move, I want you to have a new job on the table or&nbsp;three to six months of living expenses saved to keep you afloat while you job hunt.

When you’re feeling burned out and at the end of your rope, there’s still hope for you to turn things around. You might need to make some tough decisions and shift priorities to make it happen, but you&nbsp;can&nbsp;bring balance, purpose and wellness back to your life!

On April 28, 1994, former CIA official Aldrich Ames, who had passed U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and then Russia, pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Wednesday was a big day for Salina's Great Plains Manufacturing.

Not only did Great Plains host Kansas State University President Richard H. Linton and Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus CEO and Dean Alysia Starkey at its new construction equipment (CE) facility in south Salina, but it also announced that it recently received approval for the second phase of the Salina CE facility expansion.

"The visit was part of a growing collaboration between Great Plains Manufacturing and Kansas State University to expand corporate-student partnerships through networking, research, and employment opportunities," Great Plains noted in a news release.

David Disberger, Great Plains Manufacturing executive vice president and K-State Salina Dean’s Advisory Council member, said, “With the expansion of our CE facility and the growth surrounding manufacturing, we’re working to develop a longterm vision and strengthen ties with our local universities. This new facility opens up more opportunities for students and their future career paths, and we’re excited to explore opportunities for collaboration.”

Moving forward with the CE facility

Great Plains noted that Step I of the CE project is "well underway, operating on time, and under budget." So far, more than 115 employees have been hired, and the company has plans to hire more than 30 additional positions before the end of 2022.

Mass production of the Kubota SVL65 compact track loaders is scheduled to begin in September, according to information from Great Plains.

The company announced Wednesday that Step II of its CE facility expansion will be "a $124 million investment that will include the installation of an automotive-grade eco-paint system with two paint lines, one for powder and the other for liquid applications. Expanded welding, assembly, and fabrication areas, and the construction of a building addition will increase production capacity and bring more jobs to the Salina community."

The company expects Step II to be implemented and running by mid-2024 and to add approximately 200 additional jobs to the area.

“Step II is next in a three-phase strategic plan to be completed in the coming years, adding production capacity and new jobs to our Salina community. This expansion continues to show the confidence that Kubota and Great Plains have in our ability to manufacture high-quality power units for the North America Construction Equipment market,” Chris Montgomery, Great Plains manager of CE operations, said.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:33 p.m. It was centered nearly below the E. Hobbs Creek Road/S. Cunningham Road intersection.

Small quake rattles part of southern Saline County Wednesday

Kansas Wesleyan University and Saline County have announced a landmark partnership, intended to provide educational opportunities for employees of the county’s sheriff’s office and the Salina Police Department.

The Saline County Workforce Development Program will provide three certificate programs – Leadership for the Future, Culturally Informed and Trauma Informed – at no cost to the law enforcement officers. KWU, helped by a grant provided by Executive Order 11246, Saline County and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, will offer two eight-week online courses per semester. Books, tuition and all fees will be provided free of charge.

“The Board of County Commissioners is pleased to support both Kansas Wesleyan and our local law enforcement professionals by implementing training, which has been documented to lead to better community outcomes,” said Commission Chairman Jim Weese.

“As a former first responder, I can attest to the value of this agreement,” said Bernie Botson, KWU assistant professor of emergency management. “This will provide both a continuing education opportunity for some of the county’s finest and it will further their skills and abilities in a unique way. We can’t wait to get the program started!”

Because of the nature of the grant, the certificates are available only to individuals working at Salina Police Department or the Saline County Sheriff’s Office. Long-term, however, the university hopes to receive additional grants to fund similar programs for first responders around the state.

“The city of Salina is very fortunate to have Kansas Wesleyan in our community,” said Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson. “KWU has a renowned Criminal Justice program and we are pleased to partner with them in their online educational certificate program.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for local public safety personnel to earn college credit without incurring debt,” said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

“At KWU, we pride ourselves on serving our community,” said Matt Thompson, KWU president. “This agreement is another example of that approach. National data show us that additional education leads to more effective policing within communities. We’re thrilled to be able to provide our expertise through this certificate to our sheriff’s office and police department and look forward to similar opportunities in the future.”

KWU, Saline County announce educational partnership

A longtime Salina musician is among the 2022 Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductees.

The Kansas Music Hall of Fame announced Wednesday afternoon that Salina's Steve Hanson was among the 2022 inductees. The 2022 Kansas Music Hall of Fame virtual induction ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 30 on ksmhof.org.

In addition to being an inductee, Hanson is this year's recipient of the Bob Hapgood Award, named in honor of Kansas Music Hall of Fame Board Member Bob Hapgood, a 2006 inductee with his band King Midas &amp; The Muflers. Hapgood also was a longtime radio DJ from McPherson. 

Each year, the Hapgood Award is given to a deserving venue owner, radio DJ, booking agent, music store owner, music teacher, important musician or musical act from a less populated area of the state that might not otherwise be recognized by the voting membership at large, according to information from the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.

A self-proclaimed guitar guy, Hanson, who 50 years ago opened S.M. Hanson Music, 335 S. Clark Street in Salina, has helped hundred of people over the years with a variety of instruments. He also is the originator of Festival Jam, the multi-band concert the Thursday evening of the Smoky Hill River Festival.

In addition to Hanson, Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductees for 2022 include the following.

Alferd Packer Memorial String Band from Lawrence

Monáe also is the 2022 recipient of the Bill Lee Award. The award is named after Kansas Music Hall of Fame founder Bill Lee and "recognizes potential inductees currently active and deemed worthy by the KSMHoF board for early induction, especially those with a significant national/international profile. Standard rules for potential KSMHoF inductees include having started their careers in the field of music at least 20 years ago. The Bill Lee Award allows for possible exception by the board of that 20-year ruling," according to the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.
