Salina Animal Services announces open adoption on Saturday

ABILENE - A Memorial Health System Volunteer Appreciation Bingo Party was recently held at the Nichols Education Center in Abilene.

 The event was a “Thank You” to MHS Volunteer Corps members and Hospice of Dickinson County volunteers for the tremendous care and support they provide. 

Memorial Health System employees who were bingo callers for the event included Harold Courtois, CEO; Dani Gantner, Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County Director; and RaeLyn Racy, Impact Sports and Fitness Director.

Memorial Health System volunteers gather for Bingo Party

Twenty-seven new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on April 29th at a ceremony held in the KLETC Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;

Officer Robert Garland of the Andover Police Department was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief Rick Lockhart of the Lawrence Police Department. Steve McCorkill, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 292nd Basic Training Class.

Officer Garland Officer received the Fitness Medal for having the best overall improvement in the push-ups, sit-ups, and the 1.5 mile run as well as having logged the most miles run.&nbsp;Officers Mason Dyck of the Moundridge Police Department and James Smathers of the Lawrence Police Department were added to the Director’s Honor Roll. Officer Smathers was also awarded the Welch Academic Award for academic excellence. Officer Dyck was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot”. Officers Nicholas Martinez of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and Christian Rivas of the Great Bend Police Department both were inducted into the KLETC 200 Mile Club.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

The graduates, who began their training in January 2022, represented multiple municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas. Graduates are listed below by county and agency:

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a dust storm Warning in effect until 9 p.m. for the following counties in our area.

At 8 p.m. CDT, widespread 60 to 80 mph winds and locally higher were occurring behind a cold front in central Kansas. This has resulted in visibilities in blowing dust less than one-half mile to near zero in some places.

Less than a quarter mile visibility with damaging wind in excess of 60 mph.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

Locations impacted include Clyde, Linn, Greenleaf, Morrowville, Haddam and Agenda.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without          shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur.  Tree damage is likely.

Locations impacted include Abilene, Enterprise and Carlton.

This includes Interstate 70 between mile markers 271 and 275.

UPDATE 8 p.m. Friday: Most counties in our area have been dropped from the tornado watch. According to the National Weather Service, Dickinson County and Marion County remain in the watch.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., has issued a tornado watch in effect until 11 p.m. Friday for a large part of Kansas, including the following counties in our area.

UPDATE 8 p.m. Friday: Most counties in our area have been dropped from the tornado watch. UPDATE 1:40 p.m. Friday: The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has extended to May 13 the amount of time a portion of S. Simpson Road will be closed for a pipe replacement and road and ditch regrading.

S. Simpson Road between E. Water Well Road and E. Farrelly Road will be closed to through traffic from Monday through May 6 for a pipe replacement and road and ditch regrading. Motorists are asked to find alternate routes.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times.

More area counties under wind advisories beginning Friday afternoon

Salina Area Technical College announced this morning that Brenda Gutierrez has been named executive director of the college’s foundation, succeeding Larry Pankratz, who retired at the end of 2021.

“We are very happy Brenda has joined the Salina Tech family in this important role,” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. “Tuition, plus state and federal funding is sufficient to sustain the college’s operations, but future growth of the college will depend on private and corporate support.”

Gutierrez is responsible for coordinating all development and fundraising activities, including identifying and cultivating potential future donors, and building positive relationships with the college’s various constituencies.

She comes to Salina Tech after 13 years in various positions at the Salina Area United Way, most recently as Community Impact Director. She has also served as chair of the Salina Area Community Services Council, chair of the Saline County Back to School Fair and governance chair of the Kansas Rural Center.

“I strongly believe in the value of education,” Gutierrez said. “Salina Tech is the fastest-growing college in Kansas, and number one in Kansas for student success. Growing the Foundation’s financial resources to support more scholarships, build endowments for the future and expand the college’s infrastructure is an exciting challenge.”

A deer sustained fatal injuries after being hit not once, but twice in a matter of seconds west of Salina Thursday night.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Lucia Garcia, 38, of Bavaria, was eastbound on W. Crawford Street just west of the intersection with S. Halstead Road when her 2004 GMC Yukon struck a deer that darted out onto the roadway. Seconds later, a westbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Glenn Miller, 31, of Brookville, also struck the deer.

The accident occurred just after 9:30 p.m.

A 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in the Yukon was injured, possibly from the airbags, and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said.

The Silverado had to be towed from the scene.

Two vehicles going in opposite directions strike same deer

MANHATTAN – Justin Knopf believes that a major part of his life as a farmer is to build a partnership with the land. Not just today, tomorrow…but every day.&nbsp;

“Knopf Farms,” he said, “is on a journey of stewardship and partnering with a biological system that we work with every single day as a farmer.”&nbsp;

The dedication that Knopf has put into his career in agriculture was recently recognized by Kansas State University, which has named him a College of Agriculture Alumni Fellow.&nbsp;

The award is given to an alumnus from each college at K-State who has been influential in their career.

Knopf graduated from K-State in 2000 with a degree in agronomy and spent three years working in the seed industry before returning full-time to the family farm a few miles east of Salina.&nbsp;

“I began to quickly realize some of the practices that we were doing at Knopf Farms did not lead to a soil function that would efficiently capture and store water when our plants needed it,” Knopf said.&nbsp;

The farm, he notes, switched to a no till system, which helps to keep the soil covered and minimizes disturbance to the soil.&nbsp;

“The soil is a very resilient system inherently, and very slow to change,” Knopf said. “That is good in many ways, but also means it is slow to make changes. We’re working on practices that not only protect the soil, but restore it.”&nbsp;

Knopf added that he considers the soil as the foundation to how people see natural resources because they interact with soil every day.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Another practice at Knopf Farms aimed at increasing diversity in the biological system is using crop rotations and cover crops. Knopf said the farm works to integrate livestock to graze on the forage.&nbsp;

Saline County farmer named K-State College of Ag Alumni Fellow

On April 10, Salina police responded to a report of a vehicle theft and storage unit burglary at Access Storage, 1433 N. Ninth Street. 

One victim reported the theft of a two-tone blue 1997 Chevrolet Suburban from the fenced lot. A second victim reported a burglary to their storage unit. The following items were stolen.

Scott Scale 720XL bicycle, black, green, and yellow in color 

Surveillance video shows two suspects cutting the fence on the northwest corner of the property at approximately 1 a.m. on April 10. The combined value of the stolen property is more than$6,000.

In conjunction with Spring Spruce Up, the City of Salina is offering free residential trash disposal for all Saline County residents at the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill on Saturday.

Customers must have a Saline County license plate on their vehicle for free disposal. Vehicles from other counties will be required to pay normal tipping fees. Commercial waste haulers will be given priority (standard rates apply).

Customers are encouraged to use caution at all times, follow staff instructions, obey all signs, stay on approved roadways and be prepared for delays, as a line is expected to form during this event and the number of customers will be limited at the disposal site and convenience area. Removal of any landfill property, including waste from other customers, is strictly prohibited.

Items not accepted at the landfill include automobiles, batteries, corrosive waste, explosives, flammable waste, hazardous waste, liquid waste (including paint), machinery, reactive waste, storage tanks, toxic waste, and vehicle or equipment wreckage.

Items accepted, but still subject to applicable tipping fees for all commercial and residential customers include brick, concrete, rock, other aggregates, commercial loads (including waste from residents that is anything other than normal household trash), Freon-containing items (Freon removal certification required), roofing &amp; other construction materials, boats, sheds, trailers, tires, and waste requiring a Special Waste Permit from the KDHE.

Items like tree branches, brush, logs and stumps that are regularly accepted at no fee will still be accepted at no fee at the landfill’s limb area.

A listing of fees may be viewed on the City’s website at <a href="http://www.salina-ks.gov/Landfill">http://www.salina-ks.gov/Landfill</a>. Please call the landfill for specific rates not listed.

The landfill will close promptly at 2 p.m. Customers will not be permitted entrance after closing, even if a line is still present. Normal business hours and fees will resume on Monday

The next free landfill day will be in the fall.

City of Salina: Free residential trash disposal for Saline Co. residents Saturday

ASSARIA - A 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County Thursday night.

The quake struck at 8 p.m. east-southeast of Assaria, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. It was centered just southeast of the E. Hedberg Road/S. Woodward Road intersection.

Thursday night's quake was the third quake in as many days in the southeastern quarter of Saline County.

3.0 magnitude quake strikes SE of Assaria Thursday night

Significant severe storms are possible late Friday afternoon and Friday evening. 

Supercell thunderstorms capable of baseball-sized hail, damaging winds over 70 mph, and tornadoes are possible.
