“Life” does not begin at fertilization. The human egg (ovum) and sperm are both living when they merge. Each carry half of each parent’s DNA and together have the potential to form a new individual. Therefore the question of when a human life begins is not a biological question, but a question of “personhood”—when do we bestow legal protections.

Most of our body cells are programmed to reproduce only a certain number of times. We therefore decline in function over time as we age. It is the sperm or egg cells we produce that allow our cell lineage to “live on” as half of the genetics of any descendant we produce. Human females have approximately 300,000 eggs present at puberty. Usually one is released each monthly cycle; the rest degenerate by menopause. Males do not begin sperm production until puberty, but those are in the hundreds of millions. In both cases, only a few may result in offspring and carry half of each parent’s genetics into a new generation.

Medical science and federal policy define a woman as pregnant when a fertilized egg implants in the wall of her uterus. However, there is a series of stages that begin before that and continue afterward: zygote–blastocyst–embryo–fetus. These stages are well-described online by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Mayo Clinic, the Guttmacher Institute and other medical websites.&nbsp; &nbsp;

There is a rare but serious condition where a sperm fertilizes an egg but it implants on the ovary, intestinal wall, or inside the Fallopian tube (90%+) and not on the uterine wall. This is an ectopic pregnancy and occurs in approximately two percent of pregnancies. The blood vessels that grow to nourish the embryo are not specialized like the uterine lining. This poses a serious threat of the mother bleeding-to-death. In this very dangerous situation, methotrexate may be administered to stop cells from growing. This ends the pregnancy and the tissues are absorbed by the mother’s body over 4–6 weeks

During the time from fertilization to reaching the uterine lining, there will be five or more days of development as it is wafted along the Fallopian tube. The fusion of sperm and egg resulted in a one-celled zygote. This then begins dividing into 6-to-10 cells by three days. In the next 2–3 days, it hollows out into a blastocyst. Cells on the inside wall will become the embryo. The outer layer will nourish and protect the embryo. This is the embryo’s contribution to the placenta that is also built from the lining of the uterus after implantation. It is important to realize that a portion of the cells derived from the fertilized egg develop into a substantial part of the placenta that is discarded after birth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists agree that the establishment of a pregnancy takes several days and is not completed until a fertilized and developing egg is implanted in the lining of the woman's uterus. However, the 280 days (or 40 weeks) of “being pregnant” is calculated from the time of last menstruation which is perhaps two weeks before fertilization occurred, to provide an estimated date of delivery.

Up to half of fertilized eggs never implant and are shed with normal menstruation. This can be due to not enough or too much time since fertilization, deformities in development, or other problems.&nbsp; The federal definition of pregnancy beginning at implantation in the uterus becomes important in defining “morning after” pills as contraceptives. The Hyde Amendment has a provision that blocks the use of public funds to pay for abortion services. But funding is available for “drugs or devices to prevent implantation of the fertilized ovum.” However, a survey by the Alan Guttmacher Institute found that 18 states have legal provisions based on pregnancy beginning at fertilization.

Regular birth control pills (oral contraceptives) serve to inhibit ovary follicle development and ovulation (release of an egg) so there is no human ovum for sperm to fertilize. “Morning after” or emergency contraception pills contain the hormone progestin that reduces likelihood of pregnancy if taken within five days after possible fertilization. The “medication abortion” chemical mifepristone induces abortion by blocking the progesterone that maintains a pregnancy. It is followed by misoprostol that softens the cervix and causes uterine contractions to complete the abortion.

Today there is much public debate concerning these issues. We desperately need intelligent debate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Historical Society remembers Russell Stover

Heat advisories have been issued for a large part of Kansas, including all counties in our area, for Monday.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issed a heat advisory in effect from 1 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 105 are expected.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Stay well hydrated to reduce the risk of heat related illnesses. Avoid working outside during between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. if possible.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values of 100 to 105 are expected across the area during the afternoon and early evening hours on both Monday and Tuesday.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

Cumulative effects of multiple days of hot and humid conditions will increase the risk of heat related illness for people and animals. Winds on Monday will be out of the south-southwest, with speeds of 15 to 25 MPH possible. Winds on Tuesday look to be lighter, out of the south-southeast and closer to 10 to 15 mph.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon Monday to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values around 105 are expected.

Overnight lows are not expected to provide much relief with temperatures only briefly falling into the upper 70s around dawn.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses like cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke to occur.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon Monday to 9 p.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values between 102 and 110 are expected.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Three recent graduates of Salina Area Technical College’s Computer Aided Drafting program and one Diesel Technology graduate recently placed at the SkillsUSA national competition in Atlanta, Ga. 

In all, more than 6,500 high school and college students participated in the national competition.

The team of Clayton Knipp and Ashton Richards, of Salina, both 2022 graduates of Salina Tech’s Computer Aided Drafting program, placed 7th in the Additive Manufacturing event.

Dalton Kaiser of Salina, a 2022 graduate of the Diesel Technology program, placed 11th in the Diesel Equipment Technology competition.

The four students qualified for the national competition in late April by placing first in their events at the state level competition in Hutchinson.

Salina Tech students place at SkillsUSA nationals

Connections. They are a vital part of human relationships, connecting us to our past and to each other.&nbsp;

Enhancing those human connections is one of the roles of the humanities, meaning the various aspects of human society and culture. For 50 years, an organization in Kansas has worked to enhance the humanities in communities across our state.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Julie Mulvihill is executive director of Humanities Kansas. She makes her home in Jefferson County, near the rural community of Perry, population 929 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Mulvihill recalls being motivated by the humanities when going to a museum as a student in elementary school. “Since I was a little kid, the humanities have inspired me, spurred me into action, and given me reason to pause for some serious thinking,” she said.&nbsp;

“I remember learning about the Galapagos Islands and sitting there on my carpet square and thinking, ‘there is a whole world out there that I know nothing about.’ I felt like it was an important responsibility to know more.”&nbsp;

It contributed to her lifelong love of reading and history, among other things.&nbsp;

Mulvihill earned a bachelors degree in education, social studies and english from the University of Kansas. She later earned the masters degree in historical administration and museum studies from KU. In 2002, she joined the staff of what is now called Humanities Kansas. She became executive director in 2008, now leading the organization into its second 50 years.&nbsp;

In 1972, the National Endowment for the Humanities invited Kansans to form a state-based humanities program connecting the public and humanities scholars for discussions on public issues. The state responded with the creation of the Kansas Committee for the Humanities, now known as Humanities Kansas.&nbsp;

The mission of Humanities Kansas is to connect communities with history, traditions and ideas so as to strengthen civic life.&nbsp;The organization website states: “Since our founding as an independent nonprofit in 1972, Humanities Kansas has pioneered programming, grants and partnerships that share stories to spark conversations — drawing people together and generating new ideas.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

●There are grants to support locally based, humanities-focused activities, such as interpretive exhibitions, community conversations, town halls, panel discussions, presentations and more.

●There is a book discussion program called TALK – Talk About Literature in Kansas.

●There is a speaker’s bureau of those who can speak about a variety of topics.

 ●There are traveling exhibits provided to communities in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program. &nbsp;

In 2021, Humanities Kansas awarded nearly $285,000 in Culture Preservation, Humanities for All, and Action grants, plus provided support for community resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;These initiatives supported 361 events and 241 partnerships with local organizations in 124 communities. One out of every six Kansans was reached by a Humanities Kansas-supported program in some form.&nbsp;

Humanities Kansas has a 17 member Board of Directors from across the state. The current chair is Lori Goetsch of Manhattan.&nbsp;

“The humanities help us ask good questions: what do we value, how has that changed over time and across generations, what do we owe to one another, and where do we make adjustments to prepare for the generations to come?” Mulvihill said. “We are grounded in this ideal that the human experience is worthy of our attention. Big ideas are the only way to tackle the big topics in front of us, and there is never a shortage of big topics to cover in Kansas or anywhere.”&nbsp;

“I love the humanities because there’s an encouragement, an expectation that we should all see beyond ourselves, and connect our own experiences with those of others.”&nbsp;

NOW THAT'S RURAL: Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;What you eat, how much you move, how well you sleep and how you manage stress affects nearly every aspect of your well-being, including physical and mental health, said a pair of K-State family and consumer sciences experts.&nbsp;

K-State Research and Extension specialist Sharolyn Jackson and agent Lori Wuellner said the connection between the heart and brain shows that it can help lower the risk for stroke, dementia and other problems.&nbsp;

“In Kansas, 11.4% of people aged 45 and older have subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and other health issues come into play as 81% of those with SCD have at least one other chronic condition,” Jackson said.&nbsp;

Wuellner added, “Having poor mental health does not mean that you have a mental illness, but poor mental health can lead to mental illness.”&nbsp;

The Brain/Gut Connection&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wuellner listed nine research-based ways to help support digestive health and improve gut bacteria:&nbsp;

●Eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, beans and legumes.

●For newborns, breastfeed at least six months.

●Consider more plant-based foods on your plate.

These foods will help gut health and could be good physically and mentally, according to Wuellner. &nbsp;

The MIND diet is a hybrid between the Mediterranean and DASH diets and has 15 dietary components, including 10 “brain-healthy food groups.” Jackson urges people to eat:

●Green leafy vegetables (every day or at least six servings per week).

 ●Other vegetables (at least one serving/day).

●Nuts (every day or at least five times per week).

●Beans (every other day or at least three servings per week).

●Whole grains (three servings per day).

●Poultry (at least two servings per week).

 Wine (no more than one serving per day).&nbsp;

She also reported foods to limit, including:

●Red meats (no more than three servings per week).

●Butter and stick margarine (less than one tablespoon per day).

●Cheese (less than one ounce per week).

●Sweets and sweetened beverages (no more than five servings per week).

●Fried and fast food (no more than one serving/meal per week).&nbsp;

“It has been stated, what is good for your heart is good for your brain, meaning your actions are either benefiting or harming your body, including your brain,” Jackson said. &nbsp;

In short, exercise helps the brain. “It is recommended that you include at least 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous activity,” Jackson said. “The more you can move throughout the day, the better off you will be.” &nbsp;

Besides eating healthy and being active, managing stress is important. “Focus on what you can control, stick to routine as much as possible and connect with others and avoid isolation,” Jackson said. &nbsp;

&nbsp;“A small percentage of adults actually get the recommended eight hours (of sleep) that are needed,” Wuellner said. Some helpful tips are: &nbsp;

●Take a look around your sleep environment.

●Don’t drink alcohol and caffeine right before bed.

●Avoid spicy or high-in-fat foods three hours before bed.

●Listen to what your body is telling you. &nbsp;

Jackson urges people to engage in “a variety of cognitive excises that keep you thinking clearly for a longer period of time.” She mentions that a variety of cognitive activities and repetition can help keep the brain active.&nbsp;

“It may seem like a lot, but you can make small improvements every day to improve your brain and gut health,” she said.

MANHATTAN – If you’ve gasped at the grocery store checkout line recently, you’re probably not alone.&nbsp;

Inflation has hit American’s dinner table and it’s been painfully obvious on food eaten at home where consumers paid 11.9% more in May 2022 compared to May 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm" target="_blank">according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>.&nbsp;

“It’s amazing,” said Lisa Martin, an extension agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Shawnee County office. “Every time I go to the store, something I normally buy has increased 50 cents or even a dollar.”&nbsp;

Martin notes that supply chain shortages, bottlenecks in shipping and transportation, and a tight labor pool have all contributed to rising food prices. “It’s a time when all of us really need to think about how much we are spending on food and ways we can cut back,” she said.&nbsp;

Some recommendations are not new, she said:&nbsp;

●Prepare a food budget; decide how much you are willing to spend.

 ●Make a grocery list before you go to the store.

●Plan menus, preferably for an entire week, but even a few days is recommended.

●Shop when you are well-rested; you make better decisions when you are rested.

●Eat before you go to cut back on impulse buying.&nbsp;

Then, Martin said, stick to the plan.&nbsp;

“Once you’ve gotten the items on your list, get to the checkout stand,” she said. “Statistics have shown – and it may be higher now – that for every minute you spend looking around the store, and before you get to the checkout register, you’re going to spend another $2 in food.&nbsp;

“If you’re looking around for five minutes, that’s another $10 on your grocery bill.”&nbsp;

Saving on food costs also includes eating everything you buy, Martin said. Food waste is a major contributor to lost money. Martin suggests making the grocery store your last stop before going home, and storing perishable foods in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible.&nbsp;

“One of the things I do with foods that I need to use up quickly is I store them toward the front of the refrigerator,” she said. “Or if there is something that can be stored at room temperature, keep them on the counter so that you can easily see them when you walk into the kitchen.”&nbsp;

To encourage good nutrition, look for fresh produce – which is more abundant during the summer – and buy whole grains, brown rice, and low sodium foods. Farmers Markets can be a good source for low-cost, nutritious food.&nbsp;

“People still think fresh is the best,” Martin said. “If it’s just been picked, harvested, and delivered to the grocery store, it’s going to be full of nutrition. But fruit and vegetables also are processed soon after harvesting, so canned and frozen foods are a good option as well.”&nbsp;

Other ways to battle rising food costs, according to Martin, include:&nbsp;

●Compare prices between stores; changing grocers may save you money.

●Consider food co-ops and warehouse stores.

●Sign up for loyalty programs, if offered.

●Use coupons, but only on products you already use.

 ●Substitute ingredients when you find them on sale.

●Look up and look down: Eye-level products are usually more expensive.

●Be wary of displays on the end caps; those items may not be on sale.&nbsp;. Read the use-by dates on foods to make sure they are fresh.
