CityGo Familiarization teaches the basics of riding CityGo in Salina, including how to read the map and time table, fare payments and general etiquette.&nbsp;

Classes are held virtually or in person, and will last about one hour, with the following schedule for CityGo Familiarization for the summer of 2022:

Lindsborg's Couchman to deliver KSU College of Ed. student address

No, this is not about tasty caramels, it is indeed about camels. Beyond that, it is really about an educational leadership development experience that is helping rural Kansas leaders expand their skills, relationships and global knowledge.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jill Zimmerman is president of the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership program, or KARL for short. A K-State and KARL program graduate, Jill was an extension agent and later executive director of the Kansas FFA Foundation. She was on the executive team of Eastern Kansas Agri-Energy in Garnett before being named president of the KARL program in 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

KARL is a privately-funded, two-year leadership development program for up to 30 individuals across Kansas. The program is headquartered on the campus of Kansas State in Manhattan. It began 33 years ago, under the guidance of the founding board members, the late professor Barry Flinchbaugh, and the program’s first president, Jack Lindquist of Manhattan.&nbsp;

“The purpose of KARL is to take a group of thought leaders who are already committed to their purpose -- be it for agriculture, rural communities, or the general needs of Kansas -- and provide them a learning experience through which they create a bond that allows them to be change-makers,” Zimmerman said.&nbsp;

“Leaders need to be lifelong learners,” she said.&nbsp;

The KARL program provides these learning opportunities through a series of seminars in communities across Kansas. The capstone of year one is a trip to Washington DC and Gettysburg, and the capstone of year two is an international study tour.&nbsp;

Zimmerman is a graduate of KARL class V. The program is now in the process of selecting class XVI. “I met lifelong friends who have been pivotal in my life and career,” she said.&nbsp;

Her KARL class went to Australia and New Zealand. The most recent KARL class went to the United Arab Emirates. “It was a very cool experience,” Zimmerman said.&nbsp;

The UAE is a federation of seven emirates. While the history of Arabic culture is ancient, the UAE as an independent country has only existed since 1971. The nation’s population has achieved a literacy rate of nearly 95 percent (compared to 88 percent in the U.S.).&nbsp;&nbsp;The UAE can claim the world’s tallest building, the deepest pool, and the fastest roller coaster, among other things. Located in a desert, nearly all the country’s food and feed must be imported, and they are interested in sustainability.&nbsp;

As written in the KARL newsletter: “The study tour becomes an extended trip, not necessarily of continued travel, but critical thought in the ways we see our world, our community, our farms and ranches, the way we view economies, food and people and culture – we see things through a different lens.”&nbsp;

According to Zimmerman, “the four pillars of KARL are recruitment, of both board and class members; curriculum, which we seek to continually improve; alumni engagement; and strong financial backing from people who care about the future of agriculture and rural Kansas.”&nbsp;

It’s great to see a program which focuses on rural Kansas. Zimmerman, herself, is from a farm near the rural community of South Haven, population 324 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

One of the most unusual features of the recent international study tour was their visit to Camelicious, the largest camel dairy in the world. Ten thousand camels are milked daily…I am not making this up.&nbsp;

Compared to traditional cows milk, camel milk has higher antioxidants, is lower in saturated fat, and better for those who are lactose intolerant. &nbsp;

“(International travel) gives us a more expansive view of the world,” Zimmerman said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“The KARL program helps us to become better versions of ourselves.”&nbsp;

KANcycle, a regional bike sharing program sponsored by OCCK and Blue Cross Blue Shield, is announcing activities and events taking place over the next few weeks.

KANcycle is offering the promo code “bike4life” for 31 free rides on KANcycle during the month of May. This promo code is good for all locations in the KANcycle service area.

“No better way of celebrating National Ride a Bike Day and Bike Month than by offering free rides,” said Michelle Griffin, director of mobility management for the region.  “Rides can be taken for any purpose, including shopping, errands, and even fun.”

Additionally, KANcycle is partnering with Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue, to offer a 10-percent discount to any patron riding a bicycle to its location. This discount starts Sunday. Bike racks are conveniently located outside the coffee house.

“KANcycle has been a great program for Salina and north-central Kansas,” Griffin said.  “We are so excited to create this first partnership with Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House. We want to encourage mobility in all forms, and biking is a great way to do that. We have a great line-up of Bike Month activities all month long.”

KANcycle regional bike sharing provides north-central Kansas, including Salina, Minneapolis, Concordia, Belleville, Mankato, Beloit, Lincoln, and Ellsworth, with convenient, affordable access to bicycles as an easy, fun, healthy and eco-friendly means of transportation and recreation.

Riders join the program by signing up for annual memberships or pay-as-you-go. Annual memberships will be $30 with trips under one hour being free, student annual memberships will be $20 with trips under one hour being free, and pay-as-you-go will be $1.50 every 30 minutes.

Bikes are easy to check out. Riders need to download the Movatic app, find a rack with an available bike, enter the promo code on the payment screen, and start riding. To end the ride, the process is reversed.

Movatic manages all aspects of its bike-share programs — from bikes and technology, to maintenance and fleet rebalancing. Riding KANcycle bike share is easy. Bikes can be found via the free Movatic Mobile App — available for iPhone and Android.  Each bike has a unique number which riders enter into the app to unlock the bike. (A post-race drug test was positive for a banned steroid, which would lead to the horse's disqualification and Baffert's suspension. Medina Spirit collapsed and died in December 2021 after a workout.)

Avery DeWalt, a Kansas Wesleyan junior social work major, has received a Green and Gold Scholarship from the Kansas Independent College Foundation (KICF). 

DeWalt was one of five students from across the Sunflower State tabbed for the foundation’s Minority Student Scholarship, valued at $1,000.

DeWalt (Keller, Texas) is a standout social work student and the newly elected secretary of the Student Government Association. She has been a multi-time honor roll recipient and serves on the executive council for KWU’s chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as being a member of the Social Work Club and the Stigma-Free Committee.

She will be a social work professional who advocates for change, brings down barriers, and serves as a force for good in her community.”

The KICF received 116 nominations for the merit-based scholarships, and decisions were made by a volunteer panel of judges. Each nominated student had to submit a detailed essay about their leadership training, career goals and why they chose an independent option for higher education.

DeWalt was one of five students from across the Sunflower State tabbed for the foundation’s Minority Student Scholarship, valued at $1,000.DeWalt (Keller, Texas) is a standout social work student and the newly elected secretary of the Student Government Association. USD 305 to recognize retiring staff during public reception Sunday

MARION COUNTY—The National Weather Service preliminary damage survey of Friday night's storm confirmed four tornadoes in Marion County. Two of them had an EF-1 rating.

At 7:57 p.m. a tornado was reported four miles north of Tampa. It had maximum wind gusts of&nbsp; 96 miles per hour (EF-1), a maximum width of 30 yards, and traveled .9 miles.&nbsp;

At 8:03 p.m., another tornado hit three miles southeast of Durham. It had maximum wind gusts of 95 miles per hour (EF-1), a maximum width of 50 yards, and traveled .9 miles. There were no injuries or deaths from these storms.

In nearby Dickinson County, the survey of damage in the Herington area shows the tornado that started at 8:06 p.m. was rated as an EF-1 with winds of 97 miles per hour. It was on the ground for 17 miles and ended at 8:28 p.m. The tornado had a maximum width of 75 yards. There were no injuries or deaths from this storm.

Salina police bike patrols beginning in downtown area

Friday was a wild and windy weather day across the area.

Wind advisories began kicking in early Friday afternoon, and by the middle of the afternoon, much of the area was under a tornado watch.

In the early evening, strong to severe storms began firing up north and east of Salina, prompting tornado warnings for parts of Cloud, Dickinson, and Republic counties, and numerous severe thunderstorm warnings. According to the National Weather Service, tornadoes were reported near Hillsboro and Herington. Additionally, spotters reported funnel clouds near Clyde, north of Durham, and east of Abilene.

The storms also dropped hail, some of it quite large. Grapefruit- and softball-sized hail was reported south of Enterprise at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Strong winds continued to be a factor through the evening. At 8 p.m., the National Weather Service reported "widespread 60 to 80 mph winds and locally higher were occurring behind a cold front in central Kansas." A non-thunderstorm wind gust of 79 mph was reported at the Salina Regional Airport at 8:18 p.m.

Those strong winds, coupled with dry conditions, prompted the National Weather Service to issue a dust storm warning for Ellsworth, Lincoln, McPherson, and Saline counties until 9 p.m. Friday. The strong winds "resulted in visibilities in blowing dust less than one-half mile to near zero in some places," the weather service noted.

Rainfall across the area varied from nothing to 1.31 inches reported six miles north-northeast of Chapman.

The weather also knocked out power to parts of the area. In Salina, 3,449 Evergy customers were without power at approximately 9 p.m. Friday. As of 9:55 a.m. Saturday, fewer than five remained without power, according to the Evergy outage map.

Likewise, 264 DS&amp;O Electric Cooperative customers were reported to have lost power Friday night. As of 9:55 a.m. Saturday, no outages were reported.

Leadership for Tomorrow (LFT) provides time to explore change theories and strategies and participate in leadership skills training. The class expands understanding of key issues in education for effective governance and raising student achievement. Through five, two-day sessions, the class will visit local schools, hear classroom presentations and participate in discussions of issues and challenges facing Kansas education.&nbsp;

At the end of the program, LFT members’ refined skills and knowledge better prepare them for success in the modern education environment.
