Stolen city pickup located; tools still missing

BROOKVILLE - The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of $2,300 from a pickup in Brookville.

Harry Black, 25, of Brookville, told deputies that sometime between Friday and Sunday, someone stole $2,300 from an envelope in the console of a 2000 Chevrolet 1500 pickup that was parked in the 100 block of E. Third Street in Brookville, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. Black told deputies that the envelope originally contained $2,600, and $300 of that was left in the envelope.

Black said he thought the doors were locked, but during the course of the investigation, deputies determined that the doors don't lock, Melander said.

Deputies are canvassing the neighborhood to see whether surveillance video might provide clues. The investigation is ongoing.

$2,300 stolen from pickup in Brookville

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect following a Monday arrest.

On Monday, police arrested 42-year-old&nbsp;Ricky L. Gasper of Atchison, was&nbsp; on a Salina Kansas Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear in court, according to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Gasper has a previous conviction on weapons charges, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Few families have a deeper legacy at Kansas Wesleyan than the Franzens, whose lineage with KWU dates back 60 years. The family moved to extend that legacy at April 23’s scholarship gala, when it made a collective donation of $276,500 to its endowed scholarship fund.

“I’ve gotten to know the Franzen family these past few years, and their devotion to KWU knows no bounds,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement and university operations. “They canceled an overseas trip to come to the scholarship gala and make this donation. Not only that, but they had their family reunion on the KWU campus. KWU is important to them, and they are important to us. We thank them for the generous donation.”

More than 30 Franzen family members from eight different states were in attendance to witness the gift, which was one of the highlights of the gala. Former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves ’76 delivered the evening’s keynote address, and more than $440,000 was raised in support of student scholarships.

The Dickinson County Transfer Station will allow free disposal of tree limbs through Saturday to assist with cleanup following the severe weather this past weekend, according to information from Derek Norrick, Department of Environmental Services director.

Dickinson County residents may dispose of tree limbs from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Disposal fees will become effective again on Monday. Currently, the fee is $10 for each load of limbs.

Treated wood, like plywood, particle board and 2x4s, will not be accepted into the limb pile and will have to be disposed of as regular household waste. All treated wood must be cut into segments shorter than six feet in length.

Household waste is accepted during landfill hours. There is a $10 fee on household waste loads weighing less than 400 lbs. Any load over 400 lbs. is rated at $50 per ton.

As a reminder, households may dispose of household hazardous waste, which includes paint, lithium batteries, pesticides and household cleaners, metal and e-waste free of charge year-round.

Staff asks that those items by separated before arriving at the transfer station.

Additionally, lumber also should be separated from any metal being disposed of.

Anyone with questions should contact the transfer station office at (785) 263-4780 between 8 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

TOPEKA – Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland announced that grant applications are now being accepted for the Rural Mural and Public Art program. 

The Kansas Department of Commerce will provide matching funds for communities to create new murals and public art projects that will engage community residents and create a place for the community to gather and enjoy.

“Public art is an important component&nbsp;in the health and vibrancy of communities across our state,”&nbsp;said Lieutenant Governor&nbsp;and Commerce Secretary David Toland. “The Rural Mural and Public Art program&nbsp;will create new destinations that tell the story of a community and inspire pride in residents and visitors to Kansas. All of this enhances quality of life and fuels new growth statewide.”

The program is designed for communities with populations under 10,000 to increase community vibrancy and provide space for artistic expression. Matching funds are available to established 501(c)(3) or 501(c)6 organizations based in Kansas, units of local government or federally recognized tribes.

“By investing in public art and murals, a community can highlight their shared identity, history, and culture, while creating beautiful places the entire region can enjoy,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Office of Rural Prosperity Director, Trisha Purdon.&nbsp;“We are pleased to partner with communities to support locally-led projects that will develop new destination point murals across rural Kansas.”

The maximum grant amount is $10,000, and there is a 1:1 match requirement for each project. The matching funds must consist of at least 50% cash expense provided by the applicant. In-kind, non-monetary donations and volunteer hours may be counted, up to 50% of the required match.

LINDSBORG - The Bethany College Music Department will host an Organ Dedication &amp; Hymn Festival through Hymns of Faith on Sunday.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Pearson Chapel at the Mabee Welcome Center on the Bethany College campus and is open to the public at no charge. This afternoon of word and music will offer the community a time of singing and reflection as the college dedicates the organ in Pearson Chapel. 

Reverend Amy Truhe, campus pastor, will provide reflections on a Christian’s walk of faith, and Hentus van Rooyen, assistant professor of sacred music and college organist, will display the organ’s many facets and lead the audience in hymns that connect to this journey.

Van Rooyen and Truhe have collaborated on Hymnfests since spring 2018.

In 2006, original member Randy Stine uploaded the 1998 performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” to YouTube, simply with the motivation to share a bit of the glory days with his college buddies. Atlantic Records Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman saw the video, and blown away by the talent and chemistry of this a cappella anomaly, he sought out the guys and signed them.  Nobody expected such a response—least of all, the guys in the video.

Throughout the ensuing decade-plus, the group—Stine, Tyler Trepp, Seggie Isho, Michael Luginbill, Walter Chase, Jerome Collins, Charlie Mechling, Steve Morgan, and Jasper Smith—surpassed a series of remarkable milestones. Their unassuming rise would be highlighted by album sales of 1.7 million in the U.S. alone, ticket sales of over 1 million worldwide, 100 million-plus YouTube views, 100 million streams, dozens of major television performances, three PBS specials, collaborations alongside everyone from Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John to Stevie Wonder and Kristen Bell, and a pair of gold-certified albums, Holiday Spirits and Christmas Cheers.

Police believe they have developed a suspect involved in a high-speed pursuit through part of central Salina early Saturday morning.

An officer on patrol in the 600 block of S. Fifth Street at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday observed a red 1990 Chevrolet 1500 pickup with a white stripe headed northbound. When the driver did not use a turn signal when turning onto E. Prescott Avenue, the officer attempted a traffic stop, but the pickup took off and a pursuit ensued, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

While headed north on Kenwood Park Drive, the pickup was driving up to 60 mph, he said. Due to unsafe speeds, the officer discontinued the pursuit in the 1500 block of Gypsum Avenue.

Forrester said officers have spoken with the owner of the pickup and believe they know who was driving it that night.

Police investigating theft of $2,800 from Salina residence

Multiple items were stolen from a Salina residence while the owner was at work Friday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 30-year-old Salina woman had gone to work, but left a babysitter at her residence in the 100 block of S. Clark Street. The babysitter said that he had secured the residence when he left at 11 a.m. Friday.

When the woman returned home from work about 3 p.m., she found that the back door had been forced open and the following items were missing.

Forrester said that a neighbor reported seeing a Black man get out of an SUV parked around the corner on University Place and walk on the railroad tracks toward the residence. The SUV was tan in color and had quail decals on it. A short time later, the man returned to the SUV and sped off, the neighbor said.

A Salina woman was injured when she took a tumble off the back of a motorcycle east of Salina Sunday evening.

A 49-year-old Salina man and a 47-year-old Salina woman were eastbound on E. Magnolia Road on a 2007 Harley-Davidson Softtail motorcycle. Near the intersection with S. Woodward Road, the man, who was driving, looked in the rearview mirror and saw the woman tumbling in the south ditch, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

The woman told deputies that her foot dropped to the pavement, causing her to fall off the motorcycle. Melander said alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the woman falling off the motorcycle.

The woman was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with non-life threatening injuries, including roadrash on her face, Melander said.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the driver had a restricted license that required him to have an ignition interlock device on whatever vehicle he was driving. Because there was no such device on the motorcycle, the driver was cited for driving without an ignition interlock device, Melander said.

Severe storms chances increase further south

When ethanol became a gasoline additive in the U.S., botany colleagues told me it took as much energy to plant, grow and distill the corn as we produced in product. While the efficiency of ethanol extraction has since improved, the cost of our corn ethanol policy measured in other forms of damage seriously questions our continued usage of this additive. This fuller analysis is detailed in the&nbsp;Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences&nbsp;(PNAS) released earlier this year.

Dr. Tyler Lark of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, along with eight other co-authors from Kansas State University, University of California–Davis and the University of Kentucky detail problems using corn ethanol supplement in our gasoline in “Environmental Outcomes of the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard” (RFS). The&nbsp;PNAS&nbsp;journal is peer reviewed and highly ranked among world journals.

Data show that the RFS ethanol policy resulted in an expansion of corn cultivation by 2.8 million hectares (~6 million acres) and the result of diverting corn to ethanol “...increased corn prices by 30 percent and the prices of other crops by 20 percent....” from 2008 to 2016.

Based on current historical data, the report estimates that “...for every billion gallons per year expansion of ethanol demand, we would expect a 5.6 percent increase in corn prices....”

Compared to other crops, corn needs nitrogen fertilizer. This increased annual fertilizer use from 3 to 8 percent annually. Increased fertilizer runoff in turn resulted in more water pollution. Increased farming of corn was greatest in North and South Dakota, Minnesota and the Mississippi flood plain. &nbsp;

In addition, less cropland was moved to natural conditions under the Conservation Reserve Program commonly known as “CRP.” And normal crop rotations were shifted toward corn, again increasing nitrogen fertilizer usage and nitrate leaching. Calculations show that 68 percent of increased corn production was on preexisting fields and 32 percent was in expanded croplands.&nbsp; &nbsp;

This&nbsp;PNAS&nbsp;article has drawn heavy criticism from ethanol proponents throughout the Great Plains and Midwest, all providing their economic counter-arguments and asserting that ethanol serves to decrease greenhouse emissions. But they mostly fail to address the new data. Nor are they peer reviewed. And they fail to consider the new world food shortage that has exploded with the Ukraine war.

The United States is by far the largest user of ethanol, having produced over 15,000 million gallons of ethanol in 2021, or 55 percent of world ethanol production and nearly all produced by corn kernel starch.

The other large producer is Brazil that in 2021 produced 7,500 million gallons (27 percent of world production) mostly from fermenting bagasse, the dry pulp left after crushing sugarcane. The Brazil crop is different from American corn ethanol and avoids some of the problems noted in the&nbsp;PNAS&nbsp;report.

For a short time, even China fell for the ethanol plan to provide “green” energy. In 2017, a surplus of 200 million tons of corn had resulted in a plan to move to nationwide use of a gasoline blend containing 10% ethanol. China produced 860 million gallons (3 percent of world production). But on January 8, 2020, China suspended its ethanol plans. Their corn surplus had fallen to only 56 million tons by 2020. With the largest number of cars of any nation in the world, to continue to provide ethanol would have required 16 percent of their corn crop. So China reversed its policy, realizing that their arable land needed to go toward food production. In addition, while China has the most cars, they are converting to electric vehicles faster than any other country in the world. &nbsp; In China, food security comes first. But not in the United States.&nbsp; Even in the face of a rapidly growing world food shortage due to the destruction occurring in Ukraine, the other breadbasket to the world, President Biden extended the availability of higher ethanol blends during the summer to lower fuel costs and reduce reliance on foreign energy. He ignored the science, placing American self-centered political concerns at home ahead of the looming need of millions of starving people across the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINDSBORG - Step back in time Saturday during Lindsborg's Millfest.

Millfest is the one and only time all year the mill, part of the Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum complex, is put into operation, according to information from Visit Lindsborg. Millfest is scheduled for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum, 120 E. Mill Street.

Not only can you watch the 1898 flour mill in action, but you also can see a quilt show by the McPherson Quilt Guild and demonstrations of traditional arts that include the following.

Wind River Farms, a small family farm from Falun, will have a booth as well.

Demetria Hill from Stephens Land &amp; Cattle will have two presentations during Millfest. At 10:30 a.m., she is scheduled to present What Made Kansas the Wheat State? Later, at 1:30 p.m., Hill will discuss A Year in the Life of a Wheat Farmer.

The Onion Blossom Food Truck will be on hand as you enjoy music from The Front Porch Pickers, Nile Johnson, and Allan Macfarlane.
