OCCK Transportation, through Salina CityGo, is continuing the successful “Get On &amp; Go” program for Salina area youth ages 7-18 for the summer of 2022.&nbsp;

Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass for $10.&nbsp; The pass will be good for unlimited rides on Salina CityGo from June 1 to Aug. 31.&nbsp; Youth must show the drivers their “Get On &amp; Go” pass when they board the buses.&nbsp;

Riding the bus gives kids the freedom to get around in the summer.&nbsp; The “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass is a great way for kids to get to summer activities, summer lunches, community centers, parks, the library, shopping and more.&nbsp; Social distancing policies will be followed as needed.

The Summer Youth Bus Pass is available for purchase online on May 16, 2022, at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/" target="_blank">www.salinacitygo.com</a>&nbsp;and Buy A Pass, with options for pick up.&nbsp; They will also be available at OCCK Transportation, 340 N. May is Mental Health Month

A representation of the presence of pattern throughout our lives is the featured art exhibition for May at The Flower Nook.

You can check out Sean Christopher Ward's work with patterns - Chromatic Hallucinations - during May First Friday: Art at The Nook, which is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday in The Flower Nook, 208 E. Iron Avenue.

Additionally, The Flower Nook's First Friday event will include the unveiling of Grieving Mary, a bronze statue by Steve Hoffman. Participants also will be introduced to Spa Luxuries by Ashley's Crafted Creations, be able to sample Kansas food by Susie's Sprinkles, and enjoy the sweet sounds of Don Wagner, in addition to browsing the works of 21 artisans.

Ward is "an interdisciplinary artist focusing his efforts of painting in the style of op art, with major influences from Masters of the movement, like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, who utilize flat design to create depth and kinetic movement through strict hard edges and the utilization of masterfully placed colors side by side or next to negative space to keep the works constantly moving within the optics of the viewer," according to his biography. Ward's art is in more than 800 permanent and private collections throughout the world, including Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Morocco, Japan, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the US Virgin Islands.

In his artist's statement, Ward wrote, "Chromatic Hallucinations is a body of work that focuses on the ideals of pattern. It can represent many different things throughout humanity. The people, the beliefs they follow, the natural world around you, the history of subjects and the traditions that have been followed. Different colors and shapes vary meanings throughout different cultures, but the idea is carried down from generation to generation. From birth to death, pattern is a part of everyday life and cultural practice. The drive to recognize and form patterns can be from a glimpse into curiosity, discovery of new ideas and experimentation through everyday life."

Salina Public Schools has again determined a library book recently challenged, All Boys Aren’t Blue, by George M. Johnson, will remain on the shelf.

At a special meeting on May 4, the board of education voted to keep the book in the school library and adopt the findings of committees convened at the building and district levels.

A process so that parents and guardians can notify the school of their oversight preference has been developed and will be included in handbooks. This would allow a concerned parent or guardian to put “parental permission” in place prior to their student checking out a book. The district’s process to manage any challenges to textbooks and instructional materials is clear*. The first step is a meeting between the concerned individual, the school principal and the library media specialist. The next steps are a building review committee and then a district-level review committee. The final step is a review of the reports by the board of education and a hearing for the complainants. This third level of appeal is the final level and the decision of the board of education is final. Grammy Award winner Dwight Yoakam is coming to Salina.

His performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 in the historic Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard, with 14 peaking in the Top 10. Dwight Yoakam to perform in Stiefel Theatre in September

Meaghan Roths, Salina, is the recipient of the 2021-2022 Cash&nbsp;Hollistah&nbsp;Scholarship. 

Roths, a senior at Southeast of Saline High School in Gypsum,&nbsp;is a visual artist, actress, and vocalist who participates on the&nbsp;Youth Leadership Council of the Catholic&nbsp;Youth Organization. Roths&nbsp;is currently President of the Art Club and Teens Reaching Ultimate Success Together (TRUST), while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. A member of the National Honor Society, Roths&nbsp;will be attending Wichita State University in the fall, pursuing a degree in graphic design. SES's Meaghan Roths to receive Cash Hollistah Scholarship

Police are looking for a camper that was stolen from a central Salina driveway earlier this week.

A 65-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between the time he went to bed at 11 p.m. Monday and the time he awoke at 6 a.m. Tuesday, someone stole his 2015 JayCo Jay Series Sport popup camper from the driveway of his home in the 500 block of S. 11th Street. The man had been getting the camper ready for a trip, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The camper is tan in color and 16 feet by 7 feet. It has a Kansas license plate of 309PPY. The camper is valued at $12,200, Forrester said.

NWS: Widespread rainfall into Thursday

Students involved with the&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;Flight Team are preparing to compete in a national collegiate aviation competition. After finishing among the top three schools at the Region VI competition in October 2021, the K-State Salina Flight Team qualified for the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference, also known as NIFA SAFECON. This year's competition will be May 9-14 in Columbus, Ohio, and hosted by Ohio State University. Twenty-seven schools from nine different regions around the country also qualified for the competition. "This experience is multifaceted for our pilot students," said Sebastien Joubert, K-State Salina interim chief flight instructor and the flight team's advisor. "They get to compete in their chosen profession and hone in on the skills that will make them successful in their careers. The other cool aspect of this competition is the comradery between the competing schools, where they get to interact and network with fellow pilot students, faculty and alumni from across the country. It's nice for K-State Salina students to explore beyond the bubble of their home campus." The events at NIFA SAFECON 2022 will include flight and ground events that allow competitors to showcase different strengths in navigating their aircraft. The flight events will include competitions for accuracy in landings and navigation, while the ground events entail flight planning, aircraft recognition, flight computer skills and more. K-State Salina has been successful at regional and national flying competitions. The flight team has qualified for nationals seven times in the last 10 years and won the event's Safety Award at the 2021 Region VI competition. In 2014, the university was awarded the prestigious&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.com/Archive/@K-State/July2014/K-State%20Salina%20Flight%20Team%20wins%20Loening%20Trophy%20at%20nationals.htm" target="_blank">Loening Trophy</a>, presented to the outstanding all-around collegiate aviation program in the nation. This will be the first in-person national competition since 2019 and the K-State Salina team members are eager to put their skills to the test, as well as provide the younger pilots on the team with experience in flight competition. "We are able to go perform at and experience a national competition because of the hard work of everyone on this team," said Miles Denning, junior in professional pilot and team captain,&nbsp;Salina. "We really wanted to perform well in the regional competition last fall, so we decided as a team to commit two nights a week in preparation for the event. ABILENE - Youth activity scholarships are the latest beneficiary of Memorial Health System's Jeans Day fundraiser.

Employees of Memorial Health System wore blue jeans at work for a Jeans Day&nbsp; fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of April. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. 

A total donation of $960 was presented to Abilene Parks and Recreation. The money is to go towards “scholarships” for kids to participate in activities. 

The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.&nbsp;

Memorial Health System Jeans Day fundraiser to benefit children

All performing ensembles of the Kansas Wesleyan University Music Department will participate in the department’s&nbsp;Pops&nbsp;concert, the last performance of the academic year. 

Department Chair James McAllister promises some surprises, along with rock, jazz, original, contemporary and classical selections.

The&nbsp;concert, featuring The Howl of Kansas Wesleyan Pep Band, Wesleyan Chorale, String Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Philharmonic Choir, Wind Ensemble, KWU faculty and the combined ensembles will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Student Activity Center on the KWU campus. The&nbsp;concert&nbsp;is free and open to the public.

The Howl of KWU, led by Director of Athletic Bands Chris Miertschin, will kick off the&nbsp;concert&nbsp;with the university’s fight song, “Chelsea Dagger” and “Rockin’ Robin.”

The Wesleyan Chorale, conducted by Anne Gassmann, will perform the Billy Joel song “Still Rock and Roll to Me.” The String Orchestra, led by Leonardo Rosario, will follow with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” from “Encanto,” and “La Cascara.”

The KWU Music faculty will offer two selections: Gassmann will perform Ella Fitzgerald’s signature tune, “A Tisket, A Tasket,” and Gustavo do Carmo and Steve Lueth will surprise with a special version of “Dueling Pianos.”&nbsp;

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Lueth, will follow with “Mr. Pinstripe Suit,” by the Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, and an arrangement of Duke Ellington’s “Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce.”

The Philharmonic Choir, also led by Gassmann, will join the Jazz Ensemble for an arrangement of “Route 66” by Lueth. The choir then will perform two selections on its own: “Haven’t Met&nbsp;You Yet,” by Michael Bublé, and “Another Day of Sun,” from “La La Land.”

The Wind Ensemble, conducted by McAllister, will perform Henry Fillmore’s march “Americans We,” led by a guest conductor, and the “March of the Cute Little Wood Sprites,” by P.D.Q. Bach, the alter ego of musicologist and satirist Peter Schickele.&nbsp;

“Telephunk!” an original composition by McAllister and played by the combined of the Philharmonic Choir, String Orchestra, The Howl, Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble, will conclude the&nbsp;concert. This piece, commissioned in 2020, is a setting of Laura Richard’s poem “Eletelephony,” a whimsical verse that imagines an elephant using a telephone.

KWU music to present final concert of the year

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher The saying, “farmers never retire, they farm until they die,” is accurate for my paternal grandfather. Grandpa turned 95 this winter and outside a short Navy deployment at the end of World War II, he has farmed all his life. He is the picture of work ethic and steadfastness: employed full-time at a paper mill while milking cows every day for 40-plus years of his life. In the early 2000s, grandma decided it was time for them to retire and sell milking heard, but grandpa continued as a crop farmer to fill time. Last fall grandpa made the somewhat surprising decision to take a step back from farming due to his declining mobility. He has had less ability for physical work over the last 10 years, spending most of the time making management decisions and then “supervising” my dad’s and uncles’ work. The irony of grandpa passing management to the next generation is that my 60+ year old dad is starting to farm after having retired from a 35-plus-year career at paper mill himself. &nbsp; My family’s situation is a fairly typical farm transition. Our farm population is aging, with the average at 57.5 years old and steadily climbing and the average age of a beginning farmer is 46.5 years old. When farmers never retire, they run the risk of their family and business suffering through turmoil when they die. This potential has made estate and succession planning a common topic for workshops at just about every farm conference in the last decade or two. Thankfully many farmers have heard these messages and taken steps to plan for how their assets will be protected through this transition. Even though my grandpa is still farming, he has had his estate affairs settled for more than a decade. But assets are only part of a farm’s ability to succeed and thrive. Knowledge, judgement and the experience required to run a successful business can be the hardest things to pass to a successor. The real power of succession planning comes in knowing how people and businesses will thrive without you. A driver for Marc and my decision to join his family’s farming operation was legacy. We want to work with his family to grow and safeguard the farm and one day pass it on to future generations. Transitioning to the farm has revealed a pivotal paradigm shift for me about how plan and support succession. Apprenticeship is a common succession approach with observation, assigned tasks and discussions with the current manager. There is no question about will Marc be ready, he has the responsibility now. Marc’s dad isn’t just showing faith and support, he is displaying love for his family and legacy by doing everything in his power to ensure they are prepared and protected for a future without him. It sounds so simple but it feels radical. Powerful emotions are tied to uncertainty of what the future holds for what we have lovingly built with blood, sweat and tears. A powerful succession plan requires caring enough about something to overcome these fears and build so strong that it won’t fail without you. Leaving a legacy requires leaving.  </figure>By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher The saying, “farmers never retire, they farm until they die,” is accurate for my paternal grandfather. Grandpa turned 95 this winter and outside a short Navy deployment at the end of World War II, he has farmed all his life. He is the picture of work ethic and steadfastness: employed full-time at a paper mill while milking cows every day for 40-plus years of his life. In the early 2000s, grandma decided it was time for them to retire and sell milking heard, but grandpa continued as a crop farmer to fill time. Last fall grandpa made the somewhat surprising decision to take a step back from farming due to his declining mobility. He has had less ability for physical work over the last 10 years, spending most of the time making management decisions and then “supervising” my dad’s and uncles’ work. The irony of grandpa passing management to the next generation is that my 60+ year old dad is starting to farm after having retired from a 35-plus-year career at paper mill himself. &nbsp; My family’s situation is a fairly typical farm transition. Our farm population is aging, with the average at 57.5 years old and steadily climbing and the average age of a beginning farmer is 46.5 years old. When farmers never retire, they run the risk of their family and business suffering through turmoil when they die. This potential has made estate and succession planning a common topic for workshops at just about every farm conference in the last decade or two. Thankfully many farmers have heard these messages and taken steps to plan for how their assets will be protected through this transition. Even though my grandpa is still farming, he has had his estate affairs settled for more than a decade. But assets are only part of a farm’s ability to succeed and thrive. Knowledge, judgement and the experience required to run a successful business can be the hardest things to pass to a successor. The real power of succession planning comes in knowing how people and businesses will thrive without you. A driver for Marc and my decision to join his family’s farming operation was legacy. We want to work with his family to grow and safeguard the farm and one day pass it on to future generations. Transitioning to the farm has revealed a pivotal paradigm shift for me about how plan and support succession. Apprenticeship is a common succession approach with observation, assigned tasks and discussions with the current manager. INSIGHT: The leaving in legacy

Today is Wednesday, May 4, the 124th day of 2022. There are 241 days left in the year.

On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire during an anti-war protest at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine others.

In 1776, Rhode Island declared its freedom from England, two months before the Declaration of Independence was adopted.

In 1886, at Haymarket Square in Chicago, a labor demonstration for an 8-hour work day turned into a deadly riot when a bomb exploded.

In 1904, the United States took over construction of the Panama Canal from the French.

(Chen left China on May 19, 2012.) Adam Yauch, 47, the gravelly-voiced rapper who helped make The Beastie Boys one of the seminal groups in hip-hop, died in New York.

Five years ago: President Donald Trump met with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull aboard the USS Intrepid, a decommissioned aircraft carrier in New York, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the World War II Battle of the Coral Sea, which reinforced the ties between the U.S. and Australia. A U.S. service member was killed in Somalia during an operation against the extremist group al-Shabab, the first American combat death there in more than two decades. Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II's 95-year-old husband, Prince Philip, was retiring from royal duties.

One year ago: President Joe Biden set a new vaccination goal to deliver at least one shot to 70% of adult Americans by July Fourth. (The effort would fall short, with a 67% vaccination rate.) Crews in Mexico City untangled train carriages from the steel and concrete wreckage that fell onto a roadway a day earlier, killing 26 people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu missed a midnight deadline to put together a new governing coalition; his Likud party would be pushed into the opposition for the first time in 12 years.

City: Landfill is not a place to abandon animals

Themes of heritage and family histories are the focus of the latest exhibition at the Salina Art Center.

Forms of Relation by Spring Artist-in-Residence Ghazal Ghazi runs until May 21 at the Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue. The exhibition is open to the public at no charge; donations are welcome.

The gallery is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday; and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.

Additionally, the public is invited to an opening reception with the artist from 5-7 p.m. Friday as a part of Salina Downtown's First Friday, according to information from the Salina Art Center. Brief remarks will be made at 6 p.m.

A Lunch &amp; Learn via Zoom and Facebook Live with Ghazi presenting an artist talk is scheduled for May 18.

About the artist from the Salina Art Center

Ghazal Ghazi is a Tulsa-based multidisciplinary artist born in Tehran, Iran. Her artwork addresses themes of heritage and family histories. Manifested through painting and ceramic, these works continue her Monumental Miniatures series, where she investigates collective memory and cultural intervention.

Paintings from this body of work illuminate contemporary issues facing the Iranian-American and broader SWANA (Southwest Asian North African) and Muslim communities within the context of diaspora, migration, state violence, and the trans-generational transmission of culture.

Ghazi exhibition at art center includes First Friday reception

Students from Salina Area Technical College’s Diesel Technology, Computer Aided Drafting and Machine Tool Technology programs brought home 12 medals from the statewide SkillsUSA competition this past week in Hutchinson.

This is the most medals Salina Tech students have earned at the state-level competition since at least 2015.

Students who win gold medals at the state level qualify to compete in the national competition in Atlanta, Ga., in June.

Salina Tech medalists include the following.

• Ashton Richards and Allen Cunningham in the college division of Additive Manufacturing

• Dalton Kaiser in the college division of Diesel Equipment Technology

• Andrew Strong in the college division of Technical Drafting

• Dakota Trumbo in the college division of Architectural Drafting

• Blake Holmes in the high school division of Diesel Equipment Technology

• Clayton Knipp, Chance Sorell, and Cassie Otey in the college division of Automated Manufacturing Technology

Salina Tech students find success at SkillsUSA competition

LINDSBORG - Original student research will be featured during the Bethany College Criminal Justice Department's Criminal Justice Research Symposium May 10.

The symposium is scheduled for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 10 in the Levin Room of Pihlblad Memorial Union on the Bethany Campus, 335 E. Swensson Street in Lindsborg. The symposium is open to the public at no charge.

Members of the department's senior seminar class, as well as students from the criminal justice research methods class will have their research on display. The symposium will consist of a static display of presentation boards for public viewing, according to information from the Criminal Justice Department. 

The authors will be available "on an intermittent schedule to answer questions about their research," the department noted.

A number of research topics will be covered in the symposium, including the following.

Trooper Voss earned recognition for his continuous support of the KHP's mission of Service, Courtesy, and Protection.

During this Quarter, Troop Voss has self-initiated several criminal, DUI, and drug-related investigations. These investigations led to multiple arrests and seizures that exemplify KHP's standard for public safety. Trooper Voss' positive attitude and willingness to work extra hours to enhance public safety has undoubtedly made the roadways in Kansas a safer place for all. Thank you, Trooper Voss!

From 1.41 inches north of Belleville to 0.08 of an inch northeast of Beloit, rainfall varied across the area for the 24-hour period that ended at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
