Responses will be used to round out the museum’s 48-month exhibit schedule, which was based on community input given in 2020. It currently has the following:

OCCK, Inc. Transportation will be celebrating National Transportation Week Monday through Friday with three events.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Tuesday, OCCK Transportation will be hosting a small meet-and-greet at Eisenhower Park in Abilene from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; All are welcome to attend and enjoy cupcakes, cool drinks, and conversation about public transportation.

On Wednesday, OCCK Transportation will be hosting an open house and cookout in honor of National Transportation Week.&nbsp; The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 340 N. Santa Fe, Salina.&nbsp; Hot dogs, chips and bottled water will be served.&nbsp; The event is free and open to the public.&nbsp; In addition, guests will be able to view the current transportation vehicles, including a CityGo bus, meet staff, and learn more about transportation.

On Thursday, OCCK Transportation will be hosting another small meet-and-greet at Broadway Plaza in Concordia from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; Again, all are welcome to attend and enjoy cupcakes, cool drinks, and conversation about public transportation.

“We are pleased to offer these events to the public,” said Michelle Griffin, Mobility Manager. “These communities have been so supportive of our efforts to provide public transportation in their towns and throughout the region.&nbsp; We want to celebrate our successes, and this gives us an opportunity to share that with everyone.” National Transportation Week is a way to increase the awareness and appreciation of the transportation industry and to celebrate the community of transportation professionals who keep our country on the move.

OCCK plans local, area events for National Transportation Week

On May 15, 1948, hours after declaring its independence, the new state of Israel was attacked by Transjordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed an act establishing the Department of Agriculture.

In 1928, the Walt Disney cartoon character Mickey Mouse made his debut in the silent animated short "Plane Crazy."

An alumna from Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus played an integral role addressing the shortage of women in aviation from her time as a member of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Women in Aviation Advisory Board (WIAAB).

Lindsey Dreiling, a 2007 graduate of K-State Salina, was appointed to the FAA’s board in 2018 and the group recently submitted their multi-year reach and comprehensive plan to achieve greater participation from women in the aviation industry. The 30-member, all female aviation leaders, board was established by the FAA to promote organizations and programs that provide education, training, mentorship, outreach and recruitment for women in aviation positions.

“The future of the aviation industry depends on the recruitment and retention of the very top talent to support the current and growing workforce needs of the industry,” said Dreiling. “With women making up less than 7% of the pilot workforce and 2% of the aviation maintenance workforce, we have a severely untapped talent resource. Additionally, supporting future generations of women in aviation professionals provides an opportunity for them to access and excel in a challenging, adventurous, and rewarding career.” Dreiling lent her years of experience in the board’s research and findings that resulted in 55 recommendations encompassing recruitment, retention, advancement, data and culture to the FAA for greater female involvement.

Of the major findings by the WIAAB included creating a change in culture, starting with leadership. The board found that leaders in aviation have the ability to ensure an effective culture change strategy necessary to implement inside of their respective organizations. The board is asking for support from the U.S. Congress, the Department of Transportation, the FAA and many other industry leaders in adopting the comprehensive recommendations to support aviation’s future innovation, efficiency, viability and safety.

“The recommendations provide guidance for leadership on avenues for engagement and creating alliances among organizations to support aviation’s future,” Dreiling said. “These steps are just the beginning to improving access for all future aviators seeking a fulfilling profession.”

Dreiling herself has seen successes in the aviation industry during her career, which made her the ideal candidate to help the WIAAB. Dreiling previously worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation, serving as the deputy director of aviation and unmanned aircraft systems, helping to lead the first statewide unmanned air traffic safety program. She was also K-State Salina’s first ever executive director of aviation strategy, responsible for fostering growing partnerships between the Aerospace and Technology Campus and the aviation industry to broaden access for underrepresented groups in aviation.

K-State Salina department head of aviation Clint Strong notes that the training that students are receiving from the campus are helping them to become leaders of tomorrow.

“A pillar of the Aerospace and Technology Campus mission is to create a greater representation of females in the workplace,” said Strong. “Lindsey’s leadership on the national level has made it possible for women to take an interest in aviation when they might else not have. With our Global Aeronautics Initiative, we recognize the shortcomings of the industry and we hope to play a role in making sure that aviation is a better representation of our country as a whole.”

K-State Salina alumna part of research about female aviation participation

Kansas law enforcement efforts in April removed tons of unused and unwanted medicines from public access.

Kansas law enforcement officers collected 7,362 pounds of medicines at 66 locations throughout the state during the April 30 National Drug Take-Back Day, according to a report from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

In Saline County, 26.6 pounds of medications were collected, Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski told Salina Post. 

Kansans have safely destroyed a more than 118 tons of medications in the 22 collection days that have been held since 2010, according to information from the Kansas Attorney General's Office. That is the equivalent of nearly five semitrailer loads of unused medication. 

You don't need to wait for a Drug Take-Back Day to safely dispose of unused and unneeded medications. You can drop off the medicine in lobby of the sheriff's office during the office's regular business hours. Additionally, you can drop them off on the weekends at the Saline County Jail visitation window.

By SALINA POSTKansas law enforcement efforts in April removed tons of unused and unwanted medicines from public access.Kansas law enforcement officers collected 7,362 pounds of medicines at 66 locations throughout the state during the April 30 National Drug Take-Back Day, according to a report from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.In Saline County, 26.6 pounds of medications were collected, Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski told Salina Post. Kansans have safely destroyed a more than 118 tons of medications in the 22 collection days that have been held since 2010, according to information from the Kansas Attorney General's Office. That is the equivalent of nearly five semitrailer loads of unused medication. <figure>

 </figure>You don't need to wait for a Drug Take-Back Day to safely dispose of unused and unneeded medications. You can drop off the medicine in lobby of the sheriff's office during the office's regular business hours. Additionally, you can drop them off on the weekends at the Saline County Jail visitation window.

Drug Take-Back Day yields more than 3 tons in Kansas

More than 150 members of the class of 2022, together with their families and friends, gathered Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center for Kansas Wesleyan University’s 2022 Commencement ceremony.

Phil Beckner ’05, a player development consultant for professional basketball players and leader of the “Be Better. Be Different.” Legacy Foundation, was the commencement speaker, and delivered inspiring remarks on a game plan for success in life.

Award winners announced included Emily Monson, Cheney, and Hunter Pane, Burke, Va., who earned the Fran Jabara Leadership Awards, an honor based on entrepreneurial traits and leadership, particularly in business creation.&nbsp;Monson was also one of two students to earn the University Medallion, sharing the honor with Karley Benson, Salina. That award is given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average.&nbsp;

The members of KWU Nursing’s class of 2022, meanwhile, received their pins in a special ceremony Friday evening in Mabee Arena.&nbsp;

Saturday’s commencement proceedings marked the second consecutive year that KWU had held commencement at Tony’s Pizza Events Center, and it was the university’s first traditional ceremony – that is, not affected by COVID-19 – since 2019.

USD 305 high school graduations to have livestream option

The organization will be collecting the following items from 1-4 p.m. May 21 at the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

●Audiobooks, music CDs, movie DVDs, and video games

No encyclopedias, magazines, VHS tapes, or homemade recordings can be accepted, according to information from the organization.

Persons wishing to donate items to the Friends of the Salina Public Library for future used book sales can drive up to the front of the library and volunteers will unload the items being donated.

ABILENE - The Symphony at Sunset Annual D-Day Commemoration Concert returns to the campus grounds at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum on June 4. 

Several programs are scheduled leading up to the D-Day commemorative concert including the WWII Emerging Scholars Symposium.

Admission to the concert and museum is free all day. Concert activities begin at 4 p.m. with Salina-based band Everyday Lights performing at 5:30 p.m., followed by the 1st Infantry Division Band at 7 p.m., and the Salina Symphony takes the stage just as the sun sets around 8:30 p.m. Food and beverage vendors will be open at 4 p.m. 

No weapons or outside alcohol are permitted on federal property. Small, soft-sided coolers are allowed, however all bags are subject to inspection. Remember to dress for the elements and bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray!

Guests are invited to arrive early and make time to visit the temporary exhibit Drawn to Combat: Bill Mauldin &amp; the Art of War. This traveling exhibit from Pritzker Military Museum &amp; Library debuts in Abilene on June 4 and runs through Nov. 27. This retrospective of work by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, Bill Mauldin, about our nation's time of war, civil rights, and social justice is an absolute must-see.

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Nineteen students have been selected to receive the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students from KU who will transition into a full-time master’s or doctoral program at KU in the fall semester. Students who were selected demonstrated achievement in leadership and scholarship and possess the ability to envision and attain goals that require energy and tenacity. The Self Memorial Scholarship provides each recipient with a $10,000 scholarship award that is applied to tuition and fees, leadership and career development training, and an opportunity to be a part of an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students. The leadership and career development training, called the Scholar Development Program, complements the specialized education and training provided by the graduate programs.

Madison “Al” and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. The Selfs began their legacy of supporting graduate students in 1989 with the establishment of the Self Graduate Fellowship. Since 1991, the Self Graduate Fellowship has supported over 200 doctoral students. The Self Memorial Scholarship was launched and permanently endowed in 2014.&nbsp; The first scholars were awarded in 2018-2019. The overall mission of Self Graduate Programs is to provide funding and development opportunities for exceptional students who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their field of study and society as a whole.

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Nineteen students have been selected to receive the University of Kansas Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year.The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students from KU who will transition into a full-time master’s or doctoral program at KU in the fall semester. Students who were selected demonstrated achievement in leadership and scholarship and possess the ability to envision and attain goals that require energy and tenacity. The Self Memorial Scholarship provides each recipient with a $10,000 scholarship award that is applied to tuition and fees, leadership and career development training, and an opportunity to be a part of an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students. The leadership and career development training, called the Scholar Development Program, complements the specialized education and training provided by the graduate programs.Madison “Al” and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. The Selfs began their legacy of supporting graduate students in 1989 with the establishment of the Self Graduate Fellowship. Since 1991, the Self Graduate Fellowship has supported over 200 doctoral students. The Self Memorial Scholarship was launched and permanently endowed in 2014.&nbsp; The first scholars were awarded in 2018-2019. Salina's Johnson among KU's Self Scholarship recipients

After another standout year, KWU will host its latest commencement ceremony on Saturday in Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

 The event gets underway at 10 a.m., with doors opening at 8:30 a.m. Phil Beckner ’05 will deliver the commencement address.

Prior to commencement, the university’s nursing graduates will receive their pins at the annual Nursing Pinning ceremony Friday at 6 p.m. in Mabee Arena. The ceremony will include numerous traditions, including the Nightingale Pledge.&nbsp;
