NWS: Heat building again; temps near 100 by Friday

LINDSBORG –&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today stopped at the newly opened Lindsborg Child Development Center as part of her Prosperity on the Plains economic tour. 

Expanding child care is a cornerstone of the Governor’s workforce and economic development efforts.

“When we invest in child care and early education, the benefits are immediate and long-lasting,” Kelly said. “Child care helps attract and retain a highly skilled workforce, brings business to the state, and improves the long-term well-being of our children. That’s exactly why Lindsborg has made this investment in their community, and it’s why my administration has supported child care workers and centers across the state.”

The Lindsborg Child Development Center is a private-public partnership created by the Strategic Alliance, a group of Lindsborg institutions and employers working to improve their community. In 2019, the Alliance identified a lack of child care as the number one obstacle to the city’s future development and made plans to build an expanded, state-of-the-art child care facility.

CAPS offers both in-person, online parenting classes

The Salina Fire Department has announced that the inaugural Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk will take place this fall at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Event check-in and on-site registration is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 11&nbsp;at the Graves Family Sports Complex, 231 E. Cloud Street. The event is scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 per person until Sept. 2. After that, the cost is $35 per person.

All proceeds will benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (501c3) which have provided much needed assistance to the surviving families and co-workers of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001.

 The Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on Sept. 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member, but it symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.

Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. We would be remiss in mentioning that since that fateful day, there have been an additional 280+ firefighters who have succumbed to 9/11 related injuries or illness.

 The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk are not a timed race event, but a way for firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, families, friends and the community to honor and remember. All participants will have the honor of carrying the name badge of one of the fallen 343 firefighters and will also receive a 9/11 Stair Climb / Family Walk T-shirts to commemorate the event.

Salina Fire DepartmentThe Salina Fire Department has announced that the inaugural Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk will take place this fall at Kansas Wesleyan University.Event check-in and on-site registration is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 11&nbsp;at the Graves Family Sports Complex, 231 E. Cloud Street. The event is scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 per person until Sept. 2. After that, the cost is $35 per person.All proceeds will benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (501c3) which have provided much needed assistance to the surviving families and co-workers of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001. The Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on Sept. 11, 2001. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member, but it symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. Salina Fire: 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk set for Sept. 11

A week ago a constitutional proposition known as Value Them Both failed to gain the necessary support from Kansas voters in the primary election. Like many supporters of the amendment, I was surprised and disappointed with the results of this endeavor. 

While it is tempting to speculate on the reasons this proposition failed or spend time pointing fingers, I would rather leave that to the political scientists who do that for a living. Moving forward as a YES voter, I realized that my focus needs to be on what I can do in my own community to support pregnant women, especially those in crisis. 

Each of us can seek out ways to value life. Consider learning about organizations in your community that minister to pregnant women who need help and support. 

One organization in my hometown of Salina that specializes in this area is the Pregnancy Service Center. After a quick call to their office, I learned they are currently in need of tangible things like diapers (sizes 5 and 6), wipes, and new or slightly used clothing for toddler boys (24 months to 2T). As a father of five children, two of whom are still in diapers, I understand full-well how essential and expensive these items can be. 

My wife and I picked up some extra diapers and wipes at the store recently, and we will be taking them to the Pregnancy Service Center later today. 

Last Tuesday is not the end of the story. There are many ways you can choose to support life. It does not have to be written on a ballot. It only has to be written on your heart.

OPINION: Value Them Both - a week later

A new year is on the horizon at Kansas Wesleyan, and with it the promise of continued momentum.

New students will check in Wednesday, while returning students come back to campus two days later. While orientation features many new activities and events, it’s what’s on the horizon that may be most exciting. 

KWU opened the Nursing Education Center in January 2022. The next major facility change will be in music, where the campaign for Sams Chapel and departmental spaces is gaining significant momentum. Discussions are underway about a formal groundbreaking, which could occur as soon as this academic year.

“We believe we are on the cusp of a new day at our university,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “The KWU experience has always been exceptional, and it’s always been unique. The Power of AND has always had the ability to provide both what students want and what students need. However, with the upgrades on the horizon for music and multiple significant announcements planned for the next academic year, we believe 2022-23 will be a year to remember for KWU.”

When students return, however, they won’t have to wait to see improvements in the residence halls, where aesthetics, plumbing and other often-unseen features have been upgraded. They will see improvements in classrooms, where televisions and new technology have been installed to improve the learning experience, and they will see other changes. South Hall and several KWU-owned houses on Highland Avenue have been demolished. Some of this work is to make room for the university’s next major project, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Students also, without question, will be excited about the return of activities, fronted by the athletic schedule. Men’s and women’s soccer open the home slate Aug. 27, and football begins its pursuit of another NAIA playoff berth Sept. 3 against Friends. That game will feature a special announcement.

“As the only collegiate athletic program in Salina, we hold a special place in this community,” said Oliver. “Athletics provides a place for people to gather, to support a common friend, and to see the value of teamwork and camaraderie first hand. That community support will take a new form Sept. 3 with this special announcement, and we could not be more excited.”

The music schedule also gets underway this fall, with a Sept. 30 concert opening that slate. This spring, KWU will resume its collaboration with Theatre Salina, a long-running association that had been halted for a time due to logistical concerns.

“We’re fortunate to be in a community that offers such wonderful opportunities for our students,” said Oliver. “Theatre Salina is a great example of that. The chance our students have to not only perform with that group but to be an integral part of a production is something that sets our theatre arts program apart.”

KWU’s brand continues to grow throughout the state, as the university’s significant investment in marketing will include ads on nine different television stations in five different media markets this fall. Notable investments in digital advertising continue, and the university will support numerous local events. New this year is advertising with three regional high schools, which, when combined with KWU’s support of USD 305, will put the university’s brand directly in front of nearly 2,700 students on a consistent basis.

KWU’s fall semester will begin Aug. 15.

Kansas Wesleyan students return this week

A McPherson man was arrested on requested drug and violation of a protection order charges after an incident that began in downtown Salina late Monday night.

Officers were sent to Homewood Suites by Hilton, 115 E. Mulberry Street, just before 11 p.m. Monday for the report of a man allegedly following and harassing a 28-year-old woman who had a protection order against him, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. Another woman in her 20s was with the 28-year-old.

Hanus said the incident began at the hotel and then continued while the women were in a vehicle. They returned to the hotel to report the incident to police.

Officers determined that the man, identified as Donald Craig Walker, 59, of McPherson, was driving a black Ford Escort, and began looking for him.

At approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday, an officer located and stopped the car, which looked to be driving erratically, in the 200 block of S. Broadway Boulevard, Hanus said. During the stop, a deployed K-9 indicated to the odor of an illegal drug. A search of the vehicle revealed an illegal drug.

Walker was arrested on the following requested charges, Hanus said.

CityGo “Get On &amp; Go” program for Salina area youth ages 7-18 has been announced by OCCK Transportation.&nbsp;

Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a Get On &amp; Go Fall Youth Bus Pass for $10.&nbsp; The pass will be good for unlimited rides on Salina CityGo from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30.&nbsp; Youth must show the drivers their “Get On &amp; Go” pass when they board the buses.&nbsp; Face masks and social distancing policies will be followed as needed.

The Get On &amp; Go fall bus pass is available for purchase online on Aug. 15 at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinacitygo.com/" target="_blank">www.salinacitygo.com</a>&nbsp;and Buy A Pass, with options for pick up.&nbsp; They will also be available at the OCCK Transportation office, 340 N. And let’s just say back-to-school shopping will be&nbsp;expensive&nbsp;this year.&nbsp;Not only do you have a lot to buy, but there’s also that whole inflation thing happening.

But even though your list may be a few miles long, these five back-to-school shopping tips can help you prioritize your spending so you&nbsp;can&nbsp;save money—and I think we all want a little more of that right now. So, let’s get started.

Once you’ve created and prioritized your list of back-to-school needs, it’s time&nbsp;to make a budget. Remember, a budget gives you freedom to spend. When you make a budget and stick to it, you’re telling every single dollar of your hard-earned income where to go (and where&nbsp;not&nbsp;to go).

As you set up your budget,&nbsp;make a new budget category&nbsp;for&nbsp;school-related expenses that happen every single month, like after-school care or club fees. Then, make a separate budget line item for the other back-to-school expenses that will be a one-time thing, like three-ring binders and Lisa Frank-themed notebooks. (Let’s bring those back in style, okay?)

2. See what clothing and supplies you already have

At the end of last year, your kids cleaned out their cubbies, desks or lockers and brought home a very interesting mix of trash, refrigerator-worthy drawings and still-useable supplies. If you kept any of that good stuff, can you use it this year?

Same with clothes. Don’t feel like you have to buy a whole new wardrobe before school starts, no matter how much your kids want you to. Shop your kids’ closets first. What still fits? What doesn’t? Are there any hand-me-downs from your older kids? All this sorting will definitely take some time, but in this case, time spent is money saved.

3. Use dollar stores for some back-to-school shopping

If you know me, you know I’m a big fan of dollar stores—and they’re a game-changer for back-to-school shopping. Sure, you’ll see plenty of junk, but you might be surprised at some of the hidden gems you find.

For one, they often get random shipments of name-brand items that sell at other stores for up to four times the dollar store price. And certain items, like clipboards, poster board, planners and pens, are just as good here as anywhere else.

Get. Those. Deals! Consignment shops, garage sales, thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace are all great places to find&nbsp;used items.&nbsp;And, as if Goodwill’s prices aren’t good enough already, they usually have at least one half-off day every month.

And here are some other ways to get a good deal: Take advantage of back-to-school sales, use your favorite store’s app to get special offers, or find stores that price match (like Office Depot, Michaels, Kohl’s and Target).

5. Limit your kids’ extracurricular activities

This one’s not just for back-to-school shopping—it’s something to keep in mind all year long. Kids today can join clubs and programs for pretty much any and every interest you could possibly imagine. But letting them do everything might end up costing you everything in your bank account.

If you want to trim the extra spending, think about cutting back on the extracurriculars. See what your&nbsp;family budget&nbsp;can handle, then limit the number of extracurricular activities you’ll take on this year. It’ll save you time and money.

And this one’s big for me: Don’t forget about putting your kids to work. Yep—we’re talking about having them earn a&nbsp;commission. When they see the value of hard work in exchange for those hard-earned dollars, they’ll understand why doing five extracurricular activities this fall just isn’t in the budget.

Sorry to burst your bubble. That unexpected text from the Postal Service (USPS), Costco, or The Home Depot telling you about an unclaimed package or a survey you can complete to claim a freebie is NOT from them. It’s a&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams">scam</a>.

<a>The FTC has seen a spike in reports from people getting&nbsp;</a><a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/features/imposter-scams">text messages</a>&nbsp;that look like they’re from well-known names like USPS, Costco, or The Home Depot and others.&nbsp;<a>Spoiler alert: they’re from&nbsp;</a><a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/features/imposter-scams">impersonators</a>. The details vary, but the scammers are after the same thing: your money and your personal information.&nbsp;You may get a text from scammers pretending to be USPS and asking you to confirm your debit card details so you can get an undelivered package. Or you might get texts about a chance to win a free gift card or a power tool. To claim your “reward,” you’re told to click on the link, answer some questions, and pay for shipping. Don’t do it.

If you click on those links and submit your card information, you’ll ending up with nothing — but you’ll find&nbsp;<a></a><a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-do-if-youre-billed-things-you-never-got-or-you-get-unordered-products">unauthorized charges</a>&nbsp;posted to your account.

No matter what the unexpected text says, the advice is the same.

●Don’t click on links or respond to unexpected texts&nbsp;— including ones asking you to fill out surveys to get free items. If you think it could be legit, contact the company using a website or phone number you know is real. Don’t use the information in the text message.

●Don’t pay to get a package redelivered.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.uspis.gov/news/scam-article/smishing-package-tracking-text-scams">real USPS won’t contact you out of the blue</a>&nbsp;about a delivery (unless you submitted a request first and give a tracking number) — and they’ll never demand payment to redeliver a package.

Eagle Radio / Salina Post seeks on-air news director

Incentives for corrections officers, a preliminary canvass of primary election votes, and jail-related issues are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

Saline County Commission is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street. The meetings also can be viewed on Saline County’s YouTube channel:

Commissioners are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with a preliminary vote canvass from the Aug. 2 primary with County Clerk Jamie Doss. The official full canvass of votes is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday in room 107B of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider a request to increase through the remainder of 2022 a hiring incentive to aid in the county's efforts to hire corrections officers.

Currently, three corrections officer positions are open due to normal turnover, according to information in the commission meeting packet. Additionally, the county has not yet been able to hire 14 new corrections officer positions that were approved for 2022. If approved during the current budget process, 10 additional positions would need to be filled beginning in 2023.

"More and more employers, including existing Saline County departments, are providing early increased wages and hiring/retention incentives," the request for action information noted.

The sheriff's office and human resources is asking commissioners to temporarily change the  hiring incentive for corrections officers from $1,500 to $5,000 through the end of 2022. Additionally, they are requesting that a $5,000 retention incentive for all existing staff in the Jail Division of the sheriff's office be approved "in recognition of their dedication and to make a statement of support to all these employees continuing to work in the Jail," according to request for action information.

"There are 73 eligible staff, for a total expense of $365,000. Due to the current staff shortages, existing salary dollars are available in the amount of $379,000 to fund the hiring and retention incentives to be paid from September through December," the request for action information noted.

Other items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider approving a request for a storm water easement for the new Saline County Jail.

●Consider entering into an agreement for architectural design services for the courtroom remodel project.
