A school bus was involved in an accident just after 3 p.m. Wednesday in Salina.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Camaro driven by&nbsp; Gladys L. Gilder, 70, Salina, backed out of the driveway of the residence in the 500 block W. Republic Avenue.

The car made contact with the closed doors of a 2013 International School Bus driven by Dennis L.&nbsp;Kresin, 54, Salina,&nbsp; who was stopped dropping off a child. 

Gilder, the bus driver, monitor and four children on the bus were not injured. Gilder and Kresin were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Free health screenings offered at Salina Public Library Thursday

Those who have had to endure the closing of part of S. Simpson Road will have to do so a while longer.

In an update issued today, the Saline County Road and Bridge Department announced that S. Simpson Road between E. Magnolia Road and E. Crawford Street will remain closed despite the fact that the roadway looks to be nearly complete.

That portion of S. Simpson Road was closed May 6 due to a federally funded project to improve the S. Simpson Road right-of-way.

According to the department, all phases of the construction are complete with the exception of the aggregate shoulder. 

"The contractor responsible for installing the aggregate shoulder is having difficulty obtaining the trucks and truck drivers to deliver the shoulder material from the rock quarry to the project. Therefore, the project which appears to be mostly complete, will remain closed to through traffic until the remaining work can be completed due to the drop off at the edge of the driving lane," the department noted.

The road closure barricades at E. Magnolia Road and E. Crawford Street close that part of S. Simpson Road to all through traffic. Emergency traffic and travelers whose destinations are located within the project area may continue to use the access from E. Crawford Street.

"We understand the public’s frustration with the road being closed and not seeing any construction activity. However, we are asking for the public’s patience as we wait for the shouldering work to be completed and open the road to traffic," the department noted.

WAMEGO - The Wamego Police Department today released the following information about two runaway juveniles, one of whom has a Salina connection.

The Wamego Police Department had previously asked the public's assistance on Monday to locate Trinity, a 15-year-old female, who ran away from a residence in Salina, Kansas, on August 12, 2022. Trinity is 5'02" 130 pounds, and when last seen had red and black hair. She may be in the Manhattan, Fort Riley, or Junction City area.

We now have reason to believe she may be with Alejandra, a 16-year-old female runaway out of Manhattan. Alejandra is 5'07", 125 pounds, has brown eyes, and often varies the color of her hair.

Salina's Immanuel Lutheran Church will be hopping with activity Sunday during the Hot Times, Fun in the City Car Show.

The event is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the church, 255 S. Seventh Street.

Activities include a car show, Hot Wheel races, food by donation, and a cake walk, according to information from the church.

Hot Wheel races will be by the following age groups.

Car show trophies will include the following.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Central Kansas Mental Health Center and ELCA World Hunger.

GYPSUM - A small earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County early Tuesday morning.

According to information from the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.4 magnitude quake struck southwest of Gypsum at 5:13 a.m. Tuesday. It was centered just south of Assaria Road, a bit west of S. Cunningham Road.

Managing back-to-school stress

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon south of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Gregory Manning, 69, of Assaria, was southbound on Centennial Road in a tractor/trailer rig hauling grain when an eastbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 17-year-old Assaria boy failed to stop at the stop sign at the Centennial/W. Hedberg Road intersection. The 1983 Kenworth struck the pickup just behind the driver's door and then rolled, ending up on its side. 

The wreck occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Manning, the teen driver, and a 15-year-old girl who was a passenger in the pickup all sustained what were believed to be serious injuries and were transported to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said. A 40-year-old man who was a passenger in the Kenworth was not injured.

Three people injured in collision of pickup, tractor-trailer rig

A local man was arrested after incidents at the Salina Rescue Mission and Salina Regional Health Center Tuesday night.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were sent to the Salina Rescue Mission, 1716 Summers Road, at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday for the report of an intoxicated man refusing to leave. When they arrived, they found Donald Smith, 61, of Salina, sitting in the front seat of his van in the Mission parking lot.

An officer told Smith that he needed to leave, but he refused. When the officer tried to detain Smith, Smith allegedly slapped the officer's hand away, and a minor scuffle ensued before Smith was taken into custody, Forrester said.

Smith sustained some scrapes on his arm and requested to be taken to the Salina Regional Health Center emergency room, Forrester said. While in the emergency room, Smith allegedly spit in the face of a doctor who was trying to help him.

Smith was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

ABILENE —Legacy Kansas is the official name while the subtitle for the new restaurant in Abilene is Munson's Prime Steaks Brookville Family Style Chicken. 

Deanna and Chuck Munson purchased the former Brookville Hotel that has been closed for several months and have combined it with their former Munson Prime restaurant which was destroyed by a fire.&nbsp;

Deanna Munson said the history of both entities dates back into the 1800's. "The Brookville Hotel and the family that started it goes back to 1870. If you look at the Munson history of establishing the meat which is the reason why we had the restaurant, Munson's Prime, that all started in 1869 when Carl Munson came to Junction City." Munson began to acquire cattle and in 1924 the family went to a registered cow herd. Munson's Prime was opened in 2014. "So we're talking legacy of both entities."

Deanna said right now reservations only are required to eat at Legacy Kansas. Challenges hiring enough staff to do walk in open seating is the reason why. "This facility could handle 22 people at a setting. Right now we have 12 people. We need 40 to 50 in order to truly do the whole thing.&nbsp;

At this point the restaurant is serving the fried chicken dinner with all of the sides that the Brookville Hotel served. They are also serving an option of country fried steak instead of the chicken. Eventually there will be gourmet steaks and burgers served, and at that time there will be a plated menu as well as the family style chicken dinners. Later homemade Munson ice cream will be served, and in the meantime Call Hall ice cream is being brought in from K-State.

The restaurant is open 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 11 until 2 and 4:30 - 7:30 on Sundays. You can make reservations at legacykansasabilene.com or by calling 1-785-200-3973 Thursday through Monday from 2:30 to 6:30.

Long awaited dining destination reopens in Abilene

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is looking for the person who stole a $12,000 boat and trailer from a property northwest of Salina earlier this month.

Sometime between Aug. 8 and Sunday, someone stole a 2000 Fisher Freedom pontoon boat and the trailer it was on from a property in the 3000 block of N. Lightville Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The boat and trailer were the property of a 59-year-old Salina man.

Pontoon boat stolen northwest of Salina earlier this month

As I was outside with my kids waiting for them to catch their big yellow bus to begin another school year, I was reminded of how all of the back-to-school excitement is similar to the anticipation of fall on the farm. &nbsp; Being that it’s a new school year, the kids are understandably excited to return to school. This has translated to them getting out to their bus stop with plenty of time to spare ensuring they don’t miss the bus and avoiding frantic, last-minute morning chaos. &nbsp; As we get closer to the start of fall harvest, we are also getting out into the fields and testing the moisture of the corn with plenty of time to spare. While some might argue it’s still too early, just like with the kids, we want to make sure we experience a smooth transition into fall harvest with as little unnecessary chaos as possible.&nbsp; &nbsp; In the days leading up to the first day of classes, our school district provided us with a rough estimate of when we should expect the bus to arrive. Although we had a good idea of when to expect the bus, we knew to be ready a little before the expected time while also understanding if it was later.&nbsp; &nbsp; Just like the morning bus, we know fall harvest will get here. We’re not quite sure when exactly that will be; we just have to be ready to go when it’s time. &nbsp; While waiting for their bus, I reminded my two children to be observant as they have the tools needed to identify the bus and know when it’s coming minutes before actually seeing it. If one listens, amid the morning sounds of feed trucks and cattle in the distance, the distinct sound of the bus bouncing down the gravel roads can be heard. &nbsp; As adults, we too have tools to use to help determine when it’s time to harvest. I know both my son and daughter prefer to sit up near the front of the bus to avoid negative results like getting car sick or getting themselves into trouble. &nbsp; We will also be intentional in our field selections prior to committing the machines to a field as we want to make sure our decisions will not cause negative results like dockage once our grain is delivered to the elevator. &nbsp; As the bus slowly moved forward, I scanned the bus windows to see if I could spot any other morning riders. With the sun rising behind the bus, it appeared my two were the first ones on. The saying “first ones on, last ones off” has been true given our location within the school district’s boundaries and bus route. Being first on and last off the bus can make for some long and tiring days for my little kiddos.&nbsp; &nbsp; And just like the bus rides, fall harvest will also bring some exhausting days as expected. In either case, we know that at the end of these long days, whether we’re riding a school bus or driving a combine, we’ll all return and find comfort (and snacks) at home.

 </figure>By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancherAs I was outside with my kids waiting for them to catch their big yellow bus to begin another school year, I was reminded of how all of the back-to-school excitement is similar to the anticipation of fall on the farm. &nbsp; Being that it’s a new school year, the kids are understandably excited to return to school. This has translated to them getting out to their bus stop with plenty of time to spare ensuring they don’t miss the bus and avoiding frantic, last-minute morning chaos. &nbsp; As we get closer to the start of fall harvest, we are also getting out into the fields and testing the moisture of the corn with plenty of time to spare. While some might argue it’s still too early, just like with the kids, we want to make sure we experience a smooth transition into fall harvest with as little unnecessary chaos as possible.&nbsp; &nbsp; In the days leading up to the first day of classes, our school district provided us with a rough estimate of when we should expect the bus to arrive. Although we had a good idea of when to expect the bus, we knew to be ready a little before the expected time while also understanding if it was later.&nbsp; &nbsp; Just like the morning bus, we know fall harvest will get here. We’re not quite sure when exactly that will be; we just have to be ready to go when it’s time. &nbsp; While waiting for their bus, I reminded my two children to be observant as they have the tools needed to identify the bus and know when it’s coming minutes before actually seeing it. INSIGHT: Bus rides and harvest

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 17, the 229th day of 2022. There are 136 days left in the year.

On Aug. 17, 1982, the first commercially produced compact discs, a recording of ABBA's "The Visitors," were pressed at a Philips factory near Hanover, West Germany.

In 1807, Robert Fulton's North River Steamboat began heading up the Hudson River on its successful round trip between New York and Albany.

In 1863, federal batteries and ships began bombarding Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor during the Civil War, but the Confederates managed to hold on despite several days of pounding.

Near normal temps; chances for rain increase by Friday

While the COVID-19 pandemic dominated the headlines, an epidemic that has long remained in the shadows continued to rage on.

In 2020, fatal drug overdoses across the U.S. climbed to a record 92,000 deaths. Of these overdoses, 75 percent were due to opioid use, and 82 percent of opioid overdoses involved synthetic opioids. In Kansas, the number of drug overdose deaths rose from 403 in 2019 to 490 in 2020, which is a 22 percent increase. Kansas is one of five states to experience an increase of over 20 percent, and the increase will be even larger for 2021 with the first six months (Jan-Jun 2021) showing 343 estimated deaths.&nbsp;

With the infrastructure to battle COVID in place, the time has come to re-focus on the opioid epidemic, which has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. Thanks to an Opioid Data to Action (OD2A) grant, the Saline County Health Department has released the Opioid Dashboard.

"This website is really a culmination of the work that was happening with OD2A in conjunction with Central Kansas Foundation," explained Jason Tiller, Saline County Health Department director and health officer. "We aim to bring awareness to the often-ignored opioid epidemic, show the public what we are doing locally to combat it and empower them to join in the fight."

The opioid dashboard is a website with up-to-date statics on opioid use and abuse in Saline County, information about contributing factors, education on how to identify opioid abuse and overdose, what to do to prevent it, and what resources are available and how to access them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline Co. Health Department releases opioid dashboard

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Kansas Department of Transportation Tuesday afternoon issued a corrected map and news release concerning roadwork in southern Saline County. The original release was published on Aug. 12. Following is the corrected map and release received this afternoon.

This week, the Kansas Department of Transportation began&nbsp;a mill and overlay on Kansas Highway 4 and Kansas Highway 104 in Saline County.

Work on K-4 will begin at the south city limits of Gypsum and continue west to the K-4/Interstate 135 junction. Work on K-104 will continue north from the K-4/K-104 junction to the I-135/Mentor Road junction.&nbsp;

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct one lane of traffic through the construction zone. Drivers should be prepared for a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules.&nbsp;

APAC-Kansas Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $2.34 million project to be completed by November, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp; To stay aware of all highway construction projects across Kansas, go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kandrive.org/" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>&nbsp;or call 5-1-1.

CORRECTED: KDOT resurfacing work underway in Saline County

Crystal Hammerschmidt has been named the new arts services coordinator for Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

Raised in Smolan, Hammerschmidt most recently lived and worked in Hays, where she recently completed her Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and sculpture at Fort Hays State University. She also lived in Lawrence for 12 years and was involved in projects with the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Public Schools, the Douglas County Food Policy Council, and managed a local screen printing shop.

“I strongly believe access for all to the arts within our community is vital to the development of artists and community members of all ages. I am fortunate to be a product of a rich arts community between Lindsborg and Salina. I look forward to a chance to help strengthen rich cultural experiences throughout Salina,” said Hammerschmidt.

Her artistic practice is currently about objects in nature and how they relate to one another. As a mixed media artist-printmaker, she combines relief cuts, lithography, etching, silkscreen, cast metals, and fabric. 

“I have always enjoyed studying science, and I find the natural world to be a curious and magical place, ripe for exploring,” she said.

This past June, Hammerschmidt participated in an international project in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, Germany, with a team of artists, former Fort Hays State faculty, and students. There they built a cupola furnace for smelting iron. The furnace will be the center performance of an international cast iron festival in 2024 in Saalfeld, Thuringia. 

“This opportunity took place at the crossroads of industry, art, and community and has given me a unique perspective on how to approach large-scale projects. I’m excited to apply this process to the public art projects here in Salina,” Hammerschmidt said.

“Crystal will be a great addition to the Arts &amp; Humanities team,” said Brad Anderson, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities executive director. “Her strong arts practice and familiarity with central Kansas will allow her to get a jump-start in connecting with the community.”

For Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, Hammerschmidt will oversee the Smoky Hill River Festival’s juried art show, demo artists, outdoor Art Installations, and the Art Patron Program. She also will serve as the primary liaison to the Community Art &amp; Design Program and its advisory committee and will serve as a regional public art and visual arts resource.

OCCK Transportation has announced more dates for the Guide &amp; Go&nbsp; travel training program that teaches people how to use public transportation services in the region.

81 Connection Familiarization classes in September are now available for sign up.&nbsp; 81 Connection Familiarization teaches the basics of riding the fixed route bus service that serves north central Kansas from Belleville to Salina.&nbsp; It includes how to read the time table, find stop locations, pay fares, and general etiquette.

Classes are held virtually or in person, and will last about one hour, with the following schedule for 81 Connection Familiarization for September:

81 Connection passengers may also be interested in attending a CityGo Familiarization class if they plan to travel to Salina.&nbsp; CityGo Familiarization teaches the basics of riding CityGo in Salina, including how to read the map and time table, fare payments and general etiquette.&nbsp;

Salina Public Library’s Gallery 708 is hosting art from some familiar faces. 

Various pieces of art created by library staff members are on display through Sept. 4. A reception will be held at Gallery 708 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 2.

The exhibit features photography, quilting, watercolor and acrylic pieces, and more.

The pride in the local beauty of the area and the desire to articulate and share that beauty is a common thread for all of the library staff artists. Many of the artists are natives of Salina or Kansas, and many graduated from local universities or taught in local schools (some for more than 30 years). 

The passion for the beauty that can be found around Salina comes through in the work currently displayed in Gallery 708. The main themes of much of the displayed work include the great outdoors, animals, and nature.

Gallery 708 is located near the south entrance of Salina Public Library, 301 W. Elm Street. The public is welcome to view the exhibit during library hours: 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—Ellsworth County Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Slaught&nbsp; injured&nbsp; by a bison Aug. 7 was discharged from Salina Regional Health Center and is recovering, according to Sheriff Murray Marston.

Slaught reported he located the bison just South of Kansas Highway 4. When he exited the vehicle to find a pasture gate, the animal had not seen him, yet.

When the bison did see him, according to Slaught, the animal charged so fast he was unable to return to the patrol car in time.

The bison struck Slaught in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Slaught was able to get to his feet and the animal charged a second time, goring him in the left thigh and tossed him 10-12 feet in the air.

A Rice County deputy arrived at the scene just as the attack occurred and put the animal down as it appeared it would charge Slaught again, according to Marston.

Following Slaught's encounter, 56-year-old Scott Schroeder of rural Bushton, was found dead in a nearby pen and it is believed a bison killed him, according to Marston.

Schroeder's body was in a row of trees north of K-4 at 5th Road near where Slaught was injured by a bison a few hours earlier. Schroeder was the owner of over 20 buffalo kept at that location, according to Marston.

Ellsworth Co. deputy recounts his near death experience with a bison

TOPEKA — State Sen. Caryn Tyson on Monday dramatically scaled back her request to recount votes for the GOP nomination for state treasurer, targeting just six counties for a review of ballots by hand.

State Rep. Steven Johnson led Tyson by 452 votes as of 5 p.m. Monday with 102 out of 105 counties having certified their results, the Secretary of State’s Office said. There were 836 provisional ballots left to be reviewed.

Jonson, from Assaria, said he hoped to learn the final numbers late Monday and begin work on the general election campaign.

“We’ll hit the ground running as soon as we’re able to take that step and make sure the nominee is clear,” Johnson said.

Tyson had requested a hand recount of ballots in 55 rural counties, which would have cost an estimated $46,000. On Monday, she narrowed her request to a full recount in Cloud, Harvey, McPherson and Ottawa counties, as well as a hand recount of advanced in Dickinson and Barton Counties and the city of Great Bend.

The Secretary of State’s Office said Tyson posted a bond of $2,570.54 and that counties could begin their hand recount. Tyson didn’t immediately respond to a call Monday seeking comment on the status of the race.

Monday was the deadline for counties to canvass and certify results in the Aug. 2 election. Johnson, Sedgwick and Shawnee counties were among those that canvassed Monday, a process the includes the review of provisional ballots. Johnson leads by a vote count of 219,363 to 218,911.

On Saturday, the Secretary of State’s Office said 74 of the 105 counties had certified election results as of 5 p.m. Friday. At that time, Johnson led Tyson by 324 votes.

If Johnson’s lead holds, he will face Democratic state Treasurer Lynn Rogers in the general election. Gov. Laura Kelly appointed Rogers, formerly her lieutenant governor, to fill the vacant office in January 2021.

“We’re moving full steam ahead as the nominee for the Democratic Party,” Rogers said in a phone interview. “We’re excited that we can be talking to people and visiting with people. We do get the question of who I’m running against. I guess we’ll wait to see.”

Tyson scales back recount request in GOP race for state treasurer

A project that would reconstruct and realign part of Kansas Highway 4 in Saline County is one of 11 expansion and modernization highway projects announced Monday by Governor Laura Kelly and Kansas Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz.

The projects, a total investment of more than $520 million, have been committed to construction as part of the Kelly Administration’s bipartisan transportation plan, IKE, according to information from the governor's office.

“Expanding and modernizing our highways will improve roadway safety, create good jobs, and deliver more economic opportunities across Kansas, both now and in the future,” said Governor Kelly. “These 11 projects demonstrate that investing in transportation benefits our communities, taxpayers, and businesses.”  

After hosting a series of local consult meetings in 2019 and 2021, Kansas Department of Transportation staff worked with community leaders to help identify regional transportation priorities and determine cost-effective ways to deliver them. 

Secretary Lorenz said KDOT is fully committed to the announced projects and noted the importance of watching inflationary prices and being flexible in scheduling.
