Fire south of Salina early Tuesday blamed on electrical issue

A teen wanted in connection to the stabbing of three people in central Salina has been arrested.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said the 14-year-old boy was arrested Friday in connection to the incident early Thursday morning. During the incident, the boy was allegedly fighting with two brothers, ages 13 and 14, in the 600 block of Montrose Street when he allegedly pulled a knife, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Thursday morning.

Hanus said this morning that both brothers were stabbed with a sharp instrument, as was their father, who reportedly came out of their residence to break up the fight.

Salina police arrest teen in connection to alleged stabbings

Thieves once again stole items from a property west of Salina.

Sometime between May 29 and June 12, someone broke into an unoccupied house and a Morton Building in the 1200 block of S. Hohneck Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said on June 13. Multiple items were stolen in that incident.

Thieves strike at property west of Salina for second time

A Salina woman was cited after multiple "VOTE YES!" signs were damaged on Sunday.

The signs encourage people to vote in favor of the proposed Kansas constitutional amendment concerning abortion.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that between 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, either the signs or sign stands at the following eight locations were damaged.

Witnesses reported seeing a white minivan in the area of some of the damaged signs.

Through the course of the investigation, police determined that Daphne M. Hass, 34, of Salina, allegedly was responsible for the damage to the signs.

Hanus said Hass was cited for a total of eight counts of damage to property.

Heat advisories remain in effect throughout the area as heat indices are forecast to be 100 or above for the next several days.

To the east of our area, an excessive heat warning has been issued by the National Weather Service.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

Heat index values of 100 to 105 are expected during the afternoon hours.

Hot air and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Stay well hydrated to reduce the risk of heat related illnesses. Avoid working outside during between 1-7 p.m. if possible.

A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat indices won`t dip below the 70s overnight and will climb back up to between 100 and 110 degrees Tuesday afternoon. There will be less heat relief from the winds on Tuesday. Winds on Tuesday are expected to only be 5 to 15 mph across the entire area.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka. 

Overnight lows are not expected to provide much relief with temperatures only briefly falling into the upper 70s around dawn.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses like cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke to occur.

Additionally, a heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Topeka remains in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 110 are expected. Overnight lows are not expected to provide much relief with temperatures only briefly falling into the upper 70s around dawn.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

The 2022 primary election is less than a month away, and if you haven't yet registered to vote you still have a bit of time. 

The voter registration deadline for the Aug. 2 primary is 8 p.m. July 12.

You also can see the various districts you are in, including county commission, judicial, Kansas House and Senate, and school, as well as what your precinct is. If you haven't yet registered, but want to vote in the Aug. 2 primary election, be sure to register by 8 p.m. July 12.

Voter registration deadline for primary election is July 12

SALINE COUNTY—A Salina woman died in an accident just before 5:30p.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer driven by 51-year-old Robyn L. Schremmer was&nbsp; westbound on Kansas 140 one mile west of Interstate 135.

The SUV left the roadway, entered the north ditch and overturned.

Schremmer was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Ryan Mortuary. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

• The development and implementation of all educational programs, on and off site, for all ages.

• Schedule and communicate with groups on field trips and education programing

• Supervises program leaders and education volunteers in their duties.

• Creates and implements zoo experience programs for guests and groups.

• Will routinely deliver education programs to a wide variety of audiences in different venues, both on-site and off-site.

• Responsible to uphold the mission and goals of RHZ in all educational programs.

• Trains and supervises Zoo Teens for education programming.

• Will network with other educators, locally and nationally, to continue to enhance and improve the quality of programming offered.

• Working with the General Curator, will comply with all Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) guidelines and safety recommendations in the use of education program animals.

• Will attend meetings and conferences pertinent to zoo education and wildlife/conservation education.

• Will work with other departments to organize special events held at the Zoo and/or Museum.

• Other duties of a similar nature as otherwise assigned.

Five years ago: The United States confirmed that North Korea had launched an intercontinental ballistic missile, as the North had boasted and the U.S. and South Korea had feared. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called it a "new escalation of the threat" to the U.S.

One year ago: On the second July Fourth holiday of the coronavirus pandemic, service members and first responders were among more than 1,000 guests at a White House event, where President Joe Biden declared that "America is coming back together"; Biden highlighted the success of the vaccination campaign, but warned that the fight against COVID-19 wasn't over. Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast at a Michigan home.

“Life” does not begin at fertilization. The human egg (ovum) and sperm are both living when they merge. Each carry half of each parent’s DNA and together have the potential to form a new individual. Therefore the question of when a human life begins is not a biological question, but a question of “personhood”—when do we bestow legal protections.

Most of our body cells are programmed to reproduce only a certain number of times. We therefore decline in function over time as we age. It is the sperm or egg cells we produce that allow our cell lineage to “live on” as half of the genetics of any descendant we produce. Human females have approximately 300,000 eggs present at puberty. Usually one is released each monthly cycle; the rest degenerate by menopause. Males do not begin sperm production until puberty, but those are in the hundreds of millions. In both cases, only a few may result in offspring and carry half of each parent’s genetics into a new generation.

Medical science and federal policy define a woman as pregnant when a fertilized egg implants in the wall of her uterus. However, there is a series of stages that begin before that and continue afterward: zygote–blastocyst–embryo–fetus. These stages are well-described online by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Mayo Clinic, the Guttmacher Institute and other medical websites.&nbsp; &nbsp;

There is a rare but serious condition where a sperm fertilizes an egg but it implants on the ovary, intestinal wall, or inside the Fallopian tube (90%+) and not on the uterine wall. This is an ectopic pregnancy and occurs in approximately two percent of pregnancies. The blood vessels that grow to nourish the embryo are not specialized like the uterine lining. This poses a serious threat of the mother bleeding-to-death. In this very dangerous situation, methotrexate may be administered to stop cells from growing. This ends the pregnancy and the tissues are absorbed by the mother’s body over 4–6 weeks

During the time from fertilization to reaching the uterine lining, there will be five or more days of development as it is wafted along the Fallopian tube. The fusion of sperm and egg resulted in a one-celled zygote. This then begins dividing into 6-to-10 cells by three days. In the next 2–3 days, it hollows out into a blastocyst. Cells on the inside wall will become the embryo. The outer layer will nourish and protect the embryo. This is the embryo’s contribution to the placenta that is also built from the lining of the uterus after implantation. It is important to realize that a portion of the cells derived from the fertilized egg develop into a substantial part of the placenta that is discarded after birth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists agree that the establishment of a pregnancy takes several days and is not completed until a fertilized and developing egg is implanted in the lining of the woman's uterus. However, the 280 days (or 40 weeks) of “being pregnant” is calculated from the time of last menstruation which is perhaps two weeks before fertilization occurred, to provide an estimated date of delivery.

Up to half of fertilized eggs never implant and are shed with normal menstruation. This can be due to not enough or too much time since fertilization, deformities in development, or other problems.&nbsp; The federal definition of pregnancy beginning at implantation in the uterus becomes important in defining “morning after” pills as contraceptives. The Hyde Amendment has a provision that blocks the use of public funds to pay for abortion services. But funding is available for “drugs or devices to prevent implantation of the fertilized ovum.” However, a survey by the Alan Guttmacher Institute found that 18 states have legal provisions based on pregnancy beginning at fertilization.

Regular birth control pills (oral contraceptives) serve to inhibit ovary follicle development and ovulation (release of an egg) so there is no human ovum for sperm to fertilize. “Morning after” or emergency contraception pills contain the hormone progestin that reduces likelihood of pregnancy if taken within five days after possible fertilization. The “medication abortion” chemical mifepristone induces abortion by blocking the progesterone that maintains a pregnancy. It is followed by misoprostol that softens the cervix and causes uterine contractions to complete the abortion.

Today there is much public debate concerning these issues. We desperately need intelligent debate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Historical Society remembers Russell Stover

Heat advisories have been issued for a large part of Kansas, including all counties in our area, for Monday.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issed a heat advisory in effect from 1 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values up to 105 are expected.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Stay well hydrated to reduce the risk of heat related illnesses. Avoid working outside during between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. if possible.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1 p.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heat index values of 100 to 105 are expected across the area during the afternoon and early evening hours on both Monday and Tuesday.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.<figure>
