MANHATTAN – Modern technology has brought home-packed school lunches along for the ride.&nbsp;

Today’s lunch bags “are made with a high tech material that kids can use to keep their food cold,” said Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee.&nbsp;

“Back in the old days, a lunch box truly was a metal box,” she said. “Now, these insulated bags can keep your food cold so that kids can have a safe lunch when they’re ready to eat it.”&nbsp;

The insulated versions will keep food cool for about four hours depending on the bag, Blakeslee said, though packing the bag with ice packs or frozen foods is important in determining how cold the food will be.&nbsp;

“It’s best to have at least two frozen packs in the bag,” Blakeslee said. “Ice packs come in many different sizes so they easily fit the lunch bag you use. Or you can freeze juice boxes beforehand, place them in the bag, and they’ll be mostly thawed out when you’re ready to use them.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee urges parents to place the frozen pack or juice box directly next to the item that needs to be kept cold – such as a meat sandwich with cheese. Chips and most whole fruit don’t require refrigeration; some vegetables may need to be kept cool. Blakeslee suggests asking the school if they have a refrigerator for lunch bags to help keep food cold.&nbsp;

“On the other hand, if you have some kind of hot food, it needs to be kept hot,” Blakeslee said. “Purchase an insulated container designed for hot food; there are many options in the market. Like the ice packs, they don’t last all day long, but many can keep food hot&nbsp;&nbsp;about four hours.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee urges parents to plan their children’s menu when shopping each week, and prepare as much of the lunch the night before. Get kids involved with choosing foods, which she says will make them “more likely to eat it.” Rinse fresh fruit and vegetables with water, and prepare any fruits and vegetables so they are ready to eat, she said.&nbsp;

Some healthy choices for lunch include a meat and cheese sandwich with whole grain bread; fresh fruit and vegetables; and a carton of milk they can purchase at school.&nbsp;

To encourage food safety, put a note in their lunch bag to remind children to wash their hands before eating – 20 seconds with warm, soapy water – and pack disposable wipes in the lunch bag as an extra food safety step.&nbsp;

“In the food world, washing your hands does help to prevent a lot of safety issues,” Blakeslee said. “I often see foodborne illness outbreaks that come over the newswire indicating poor personal hygiene as the source of the outbreak. Essentially what that means is that somebody didn’t wash their hands.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee, who is also coordinator of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center for food safety</a>, publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter" target="_blank">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy. K-State food scientist shares tips on keeping home-packed foods safe

WOODBINE - A minor earthquake rattled part of east-central Dickinson County this morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 10 a.m. Wednesday west of Woodbine. The quake was centered west of Paint Road between 1300 Avenue and 1400 Avenue.

Small quake strikes west of Woodbine Wednesday

The public is invited to a free artist reception Thursday in conjunction with the Grains of Sand exhibition currently on display at the Salina Art Center.

The reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. with artist, Mike Miller, giving remarks at 6 p.m. 

Miller's Grains of Sand is on display until Sept. 4 at Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, however, donations are welcome.

Miller is best known for his Machine-Nature Interface series of sculptures. These machine-nature forms combine a natural object with a man made object, creating a machine that produces an original movement or action, according to information from Salina Art Center. 

Most of Miller's works are kinetic, whether powered by a motor and salvaged gears, hand crank, the wind, or kids on a swing set. The movements produced echo the machinations of nature itself- plants' production of oxygen, the orbit of a moon around a planet. As man made machines and nature made machines advance the difference between the two becomes indistinguishable, the art center noted. 

Miller was born, raised, and educated in Kansas and finds inspiration and materials for both the machine and the nature aspects of his work around his home and studio in rural Butler County.

'Grains of Sand' artist reception at Salina Art Center

A local family got an unpleasant surprise when they returned from vacation Tuesday to find that their east Salina home had been burglarized.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between Thursday and Tuesday, someone burglarized a residence in the 500 block of Claremont Drive.

The 42-year-old owner of the residence told police that he and his family arrived home from vacation to find more than $1,700 worth of items missing from the residence, including the following, Forrester said.

Forrester said it appeared that entry was made through the garage.

Multiple items stolen from Salina residence while family on vacation

Two Salina men believed to be connected to two theft cases just outside the city limits were arrested Tuesday on multiple requested theft charges.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that deputies were sent to Pestinger Heating &amp; Air Conditioning, Inc., 125 E. Avenue A, for a report of items stolen from a metal recycling bin. 

Pestinger employees discovered via surveillance video that four air conditioner coils and an air conditioner motor were taken from the bin at approximately 11:30 p.m. Monday.

The video also provided information about the suspect vehicle, a silver Ford F150, which deputies were able to locate in the 700 block of N. Third Street at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Items taken from Pestinger's were found in the pickup, Hughes said.

Deputies made contact with Christian Ellison, 24, of Salina, and Justin Hayes, 32, of Salina, who they believe were responsible for the theft at Pestinger's, Hughes said. 

Additionally, through the course of the investigation, deputies were able to connect Ellison and Hayes to the theft of multiple components from a paving machine that was at Bergkamp Inc., 413 E. Avenue A, for repairs. That theft occurred sometime between May 7 and July 7, according to an earlier report from the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

Both Ellison and Hayes were arrested on the following requested charges, Hughes said.

Deputies arrest 2 Salina men in connection to 2 theft cases

Making the most of available resources to counter COVID-19 effects, Saline Stars were born in April through the Choose Saline County app.

The loyalty program aims to spend up to $670,000 of the county’s $10.532 million federal allotment from the American Rescue Plan Act, to help both participating local businesses and the people who patronize them.

Choose Saline County is designed to bolster economic activity in the community.

“It’s like a double whammy of supporting local business,” said Phillip Smith-Hanes, Saline County administrator.

All that’s needed to start is to get the app on your wireless phone, and start collecting Saline Stars. Go to the App Store or Google Play on your phone or tablet and type in “Choose Saline County” and link to a debit or credit card.

“Every time you spend money with that card at a local business that has signed up, you earn Saline Stars,” he said. “Every star you earn is worth a dollar and you can redeem those dollars at redeeming businesses.”

Businesses can participate in one of two ways, Smith-Hanes said.

“We push for businesses to accept star redemptions as payment,” he said. “But there are places where you earn but not redeem. It’s a little more involved for the business to redeem. It doesn’t cost the business anything, but they have to reprogram their cash registers and train their employees, and we understand that is a lot to ask from many small businesses in the current environment.”

The app shows the participating businesses — as of Aug. 1 there were 255 involved; 616 people have downloaded the app and 171 of those have linked their cards.

“It’s a really cool and innovative way for the county to use the ARPA dollars to benefit small businesses and residents as well. It puts money in their pockets by incentivizing them to spend locally,” said Renee Duxler, director of economic and workforce development at Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

To ease the endemic sting early on in the pandemic, the county awarded grants for stimulus funding through the chamber.

“When we got the ARPA funds, we decided ‘Instead of just giving free money to people not doing well, let’s try and encourage economic activity in the community,’ ” Smith-Hanes said. “We were looking around and found this app that a couple of other cities had used.”

Other cities, such as Boston, Mass., and Akron, Ohio, used the app.

“At Akron in particular, this app ended up returning nine dollars for every one dollar the city had invested in it. We thought that was a pretty good return,” he said. “It took about six months from the time we had this bright idea to the time we were able to let people start downloading the app on their phones.”

Choose Saline County was announced publicly at the Chamber Banquet in April, and it launched June 7. 

“I got 10 Stars just for signing up,” said Terry Burger, a retired Salina Farm Bureau agent.

“Merchants and the community both need to take advantage of this,” he said.

At first, Choose Saline County adoption was slow, said Tammy Jarvis, owner of Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe, but she’s hopeful it will benefit both Salina businesses and consumers.

“It takes time for a program like that to catch on,” she said. “We’ve been pushing ‘shop local’ for a long time. This is a fun way to bring it to people’s attention.”

The app is open to any consumer who shops in Saline County, and any business within the county. It doesn’t cost anything, and you don’t have to be a chamber member, Smith-Hanes said.

“If you are from McPherson, Dickinson, Ottawa or any county, we encourage you to download the app and use it when you shop in Saline County,” he said. “But businesses have to be from Saline County.”

The app could also benefit businesses and individuals who advertise in participating local media, but as of Aug. 8, Duxler said, none had joined in. 

“Theoretically, if local media companies were on the app, then businesses could earn stars,” she said. “It would depend on their (the media company’s) invoice system and how they accept payment if they could be.”

There are many ways Choose Saline County can generate local commerce, benefit businesses and people.

“It’s basically any sort of transaction you can do with a credit (or debit) card,” Smith-Hanes said. “Up to 20 percent of what you spend, you earn in stars. If you pay 20 dollars for a pizza, it’s four stars.”

Businesses are sorted by type and location on the app, he said.

“It’s a way to make that local money stay local,” Duxler said.

The county’s committed so far to participate in Choose Saline County for a year, but has enough money for three years, Smith-Hanes said.

“Theoretically, if this works, we would get enough sales tax money in the county to continue funding it into the future,” he said.

“I know quite a few people who earn the stars,” Duxler said. “There are several businesses like Ad Astra. People are redeeming coffee there. Brown’s Shoe Fit (2150 Planet Avenue) is real high on it. At Vernon Jewelers (123 N. Santa Fe), people have been redeeming stars for rings and other jewelry.”

Saline Stars: Fun way to boost economy, business, shoppers

Police are looking for a pickup that was stolen from a south Salina residence Tuesday afternoon.

A 77-year-old Salina man told police that his maroon and silver 2003 Chevrolet Silverado was parked in his driveway in the 400 block of Irene Street at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. At approximately 4:45 p.m., his wife noticed the pickup was missing, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The man told police that he had keys in his possession, however, he had lost another set of keys to the pickup in his yard and never found them, Forrester said.

I am proud to say that I exercised my right to vote, and, in my mind, I made all the right choices. To my knowledge I have participated in every election since I turned 18, and I intend to exercise it every opportunity I get for the rest of my life. I don’t know if you have noticed but we are at a serious crossroads in the history of our great nation. That crossroads makes exercising the right to vote even more critical now than ever. That is especially true for those of us in agriculture. We are an ever-shrinking number, and we must take every chance we can get to make our voices heard and that is especially true when it comes to the polls. That is also why it is so critical for each of us as Farm Bureau members to get involved with Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends, or VOTE FBF. First, let me encourage you to support it monetarily. The dollars are used to support candidates friendly to agriculture are only generated through donations from members. It doesn’t have to be much if each of us donate every year. More importantly get involved in the county process to decide which candidates to support. Like everything else in Farm Bureau, the decision of which candidates to support starts at the county level. Increasingly we are seeing candidates recognize this and start to attend county board meetings and this gives us an opportunity to have discussions with them about our views. Those recommendations along with voting records are heavily considered by the Vote FBF board when deciding which candidates to endorse. I would also hope that when you do go to the polls you will look at the list of candidates endorsed by VOTE FBF and consider supporting them. They are the candidates who have the best interest of agriculture in mind and most closely align with our policy. In the end you will make up your own mind and vote for the candidates that best represent you, but the list of endorsed candidates is a good place to start. The most important thing is to get out and vote in November. It is the best way for us to make our voices heard. It was ingrained in me early on that if you did not participate and vote, you really had no right to complain. I know I still get a feeling of pride every time I go to the polls and cast my vote. Regardless of how I feel about the slate of candidates or the issues I am voting on, I do get a great deal of satisfaction participating in the process. It isn’t perfect, but it is the best in the world. So go cast your vote and wear that sticker with pride, you earned it.

INSIGHT: A sticker of satisfaction

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 10, the 222nd day of 2022. There are 143 days left in the year.

The Senate approved a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan, as a rare coalition of Democrats and Republicans came together to overcome skeptics and deliver a cornerstone of President Joe Biden's agenda. Vote-counting machine maker Dominion Voting Systems filed defamation lawsuits against right-wing broadcasters and a prominent Donald Trump ally over their baseless claims that the 2020 election was marred by fraud. Soccer star Lionel Messi signed his eagerly anticipated Paris Saint-Germain contract to complete the move that confirmed the end of a career-long association with Barcelona.

NWS: Heat building again; temps near 100 by Friday

LINDSBORG –&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today stopped at the newly opened Lindsborg Child Development Center as part of her Prosperity on the Plains economic tour. 

Expanding child care is a cornerstone of the Governor’s workforce and economic development efforts.

“When we invest in child care and early education, the benefits are immediate and long-lasting,” Kelly said. “Child care helps attract and retain a highly skilled workforce, brings business to the state, and improves the long-term well-being of our children. That’s exactly why Lindsborg has made this investment in their community, and it’s why my administration has supported child care workers and centers across the state.”

The Lindsborg Child Development Center is a private-public partnership created by the Strategic Alliance, a group of Lindsborg institutions and employers working to improve their community. In 2019, the Alliance identified a lack of child care as the number one obstacle to the city’s future development and made plans to build an expanded, state-of-the-art child care facility.

“Quality Child Care is a critical component in helping our most vulnerable children get a good start in life,”&nbsp;Christy Clarkson, director of the Lindsborg Child Development Center, said. “In quality child care, children are kept safe and healthy. Families will benefit in staying connected with other families and improving quality of family life.”

“Childcare is the cornerstone of our economic development plan,”&nbsp;Lucas Neece, Lindsborg assistant city administrator, said. “People can only do their best work when they know that their children are happy and safe. This investment is part of our invitation to young adults: Come build a prosperous future with us here in Lindsborg!”

Kelly has invested in child care as a vital component of workforce and economic development success. CAPS offers both in-person, online parenting classes

The Salina Fire Department has announced that the inaugural Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk will take place this fall at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Event check-in and on-site registration is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 11&nbsp;at the Graves Family Sports Complex, 231 E. Cloud Street. The event is scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 per person until Sept. 2. After that, the cost is $35 per person.

All proceeds will benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (501c3) which have provided much needed assistance to the surviving families and co-workers of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001.

 The Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb &amp; Family Walk is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on Sept. 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member, but it symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.

Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. We would be remiss in mentioning that since that fateful day, there have been an additional 280+ firefighters who have succumbed to 9/11 related injuries or illness.

Salina Fire: 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family Walk set for Sept. 11

A week ago a constitutional proposition known as Value Them Both failed to gain the necessary support from Kansas voters in the primary election. Like many supporters of the amendment, I was surprised and disappointed with the results of this endeavor. 

While it is tempting to speculate on the reasons this proposition failed or spend time pointing fingers, I would rather leave that to the political scientists who do that for a living. Moving forward as a YES voter, I realized that my focus needs to be on what I can do in my own community to support pregnant women, especially those in crisis. 

Each of us can seek out ways to value life. Consider learning about organizations in your community that minister to pregnant women who need help and support. 

One organization in my hometown of Salina that specializes in this area is the Pregnancy Service Center. After a quick call to their office, I learned they are currently in need of tangible things like diapers (sizes 5 and 6), wipes, and new or slightly used clothing for toddler boys (24 months to 2T). As a father of five children, two of whom are still in diapers, I understand full-well how essential and expensive these items can be. 

My wife and I picked up some extra diapers and wipes at the store recently, and we will be taking them to the Pregnancy Service Center later today. 

Last Tuesday is not the end of the story. There are many ways you can choose to support life. It does not have to be written on a ballot. It only has to be written on your heart.

OPINION: Value Them Both - a week later

A new year is on the horizon at Kansas Wesleyan, and with it the promise of continued momentum.

New students will check in Wednesday, while returning students come back to campus two days later. While orientation features many new activities and events, it’s what’s on the horizon that may be most exciting. 

KWU opened the Nursing Education Center in January 2022. The next major facility change will be in music, where the campaign for Sams Chapel and departmental spaces is gaining significant momentum. Discussions are underway about a formal groundbreaking, which could occur as soon as this academic year.

“We believe we are on the cusp of a new day at our university,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “The KWU experience has always been exceptional, and it’s always been unique. The Power of AND has always had the ability to provide both what students want and what students need. However, with the upgrades on the horizon for music and multiple significant announcements planned for the next academic year, we believe 2022-23 will be a year to remember for KWU.”

When students return, however, they won’t have to wait to see improvements in the residence halls, where aesthetics, plumbing and other often-unseen features have been upgraded. They will see improvements in classrooms, where televisions and new technology have been installed to improve the learning experience, and they will see other changes. South Hall and several KWU-owned houses on Highland Avenue have been demolished. Some of this work is to make room for the university’s next major project, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Students also, without question, will be excited about the return of activities, fronted by the athletic schedule. Men’s and women’s soccer open the home slate Aug. 27, and football begins its pursuit of another NAIA playoff berth Sept. 3 against Friends. That game will feature a special announcement.

“As the only collegiate athletic program in Salina, we hold a special place in this community,” said Oliver. “Athletics provides a place for people to gather, to support a common friend, and to see the value of teamwork and camaraderie first hand. That community support will take a new form Sept. 3 with this special announcement, and we could not be more excited.”

The music schedule also gets underway this fall, with a Sept. 30 concert opening that slate. This spring, KWU will resume its collaboration with Theatre Salina, a long-running association that had been halted for a time due to logistical concerns.

“We’re fortunate to be in a community that offers such wonderful opportunities for our students,” said Oliver. “Theatre Salina is a great example of that. The chance our students have to not only perform with that group but to be an integral part of a production is something that sets our theatre arts program apart.”

KWU’s brand continues to grow throughout the state, as the university’s significant investment in marketing will include ads on nine different television stations in five different media markets this fall. Notable investments in digital advertising continue, and the university will support numerous local events. New this year is advertising with three regional high schools, which, when combined with KWU’s support of USD 305, will put the university’s brand directly in front of nearly 2,700 students on a consistent basis.

KWU’s fall semester will begin Aug. 15.

Kansas Wesleyan students return this week

A McPherson man was arrested on requested drug and violation of a protection order charges after an incident that began in downtown Salina late Monday night.

Officers were sent to Homewood Suites by Hilton, 115 E. Mulberry Street, just before 11 p.m. Monday for the report of a man allegedly following and harassing a 28-year-old woman who had a protection order against him, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. Another woman in her 20s was with the 28-year-old.

Hanus said the incident began at the hotel and then continued while the women were in a vehicle. They returned to the hotel to report the incident to police.

Officers determined that the man, identified as Donald Craig Walker, 59, of McPherson, was driving a black Ford Escort, and began looking for him.

At approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday, an officer located and stopped the car, which looked to be driving erratically, in the 200 block of S. Broadway Boulevard, Hanus said. During the stop, a deployed K-9 indicated to the odor of an illegal drug. A search of the vehicle revealed an illegal drug.

Walker was arrested on the following requested charges, Hanus said.

When you make a budget and stick to it, you’re telling every single dollar of your hard-earned income where to go (and where&nbsp;not&nbsp;to go).As you set up your budget,&nbsp;make a new budget category&nbsp;for&nbsp;school-related expenses that happen every single month, like after-school care or club fees. Then, make a separate budget line item for the other back-to-school expenses that will be a one-time thing, like three-ring binders and Lisa Frank-themed notebooks. (Let’s bring those back in style, okay?)2. See what clothing and supplies you already haveAt the end of last year, your kids cleaned out their cubbies, desks or lockers and brought home a very interesting mix of trash, refrigerator-worthy drawings and still-useable supplies. If you kept any of that good stuff, can you use it this year?Same with clothes. Don’t feel like you have to buy a whole new wardrobe before school starts, no matter how much your kids want you to. Shop your kids’ closets first. What still fits? What doesn’t? Are there any hand-me-downs from your older kids? All this sorting will definitely take some time, but in this case, time spent is money saved.3. Use dollar stores for some back-to-school shoppingIf you know me, you know I’m a big fan of dollar stores—and they’re a game-changer for back-to-school shopping. Sure, you’ll see plenty of junk, but you might be surprised at some of the hidden gems you find.For one, they often get random shipments of name-brand items that sell at other stores for up to four times the dollar store price. And certain items, like clipboards, poster board, planners and pens, are just as good here as anywhere else.4. Take advantage of the dealsGet. Those. Deals! Consignment shops, garage sales, thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace are all great places to find&nbsp;used items.&nbsp;And, as if Goodwill’s prices aren’t good enough already, they usually have at least one half-off day every month.And here are some other ways to get a good deal: Take advantage of back-to-school sales, use your favorite store’s app to get special offers, or find stores that price match (like Office Depot, Michaels, Kohl’s and Target).5. Limit your kids’ extracurricular activitiesThis one’s not just for back-to-school shopping—it’s something to keep in mind all year long. Kids today can join clubs and programs for pretty much any and every interest you could possibly imagine. But letting them do everything might end up costing you everything in your bank account.If you want to trim the extra spending, think about cutting back on the extracurriculars. See what your&nbsp;family budget&nbsp;can handle, then limit the number of extracurricular activities you’ll take on this year. It’ll save you time and money.And this one’s big for me: Don’t forget about putting your kids to work. Yep—we’re talking about having them earn a&nbsp;commission.
