MANHATTAN — Treats and costumes are great for kids and adults, but a Kansas State University veterinarian says to take extra care with dogs and cats this Halloween. Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the university's Veterinary Health Center, said one of the most important things to do is to keep all candy in a place where pets cannot get to it. "Chocolate, raisins, sugar-free candies and gums, and some nuts, can be toxic to pets," Nelson said. "Candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can also become choking hazards or gastrointestinal foreign bodies if ingested." Pet costumes are adorable and popular. If you are planning on dressing up a pet, Nelson suggested trying the costume on your pet in advance. This allows the time to get used to it and to ensure your pet can see, hear, smell and breathe when in costume. Make sure to avoid costumes that have any loose or small parts that can be pulled off and ingested. "If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior with a costume, consider having it wear a Halloween-themed bandana instead, as many pets prefer to dress up as themselves," Nelson said. Family members in costumes can be just as scary for pets. Nelson said to be mindful that your pet may be frightened by one of its own familiar family members when that person is disguised in a costume. "A severe fright can make the pet wary of that person for some time to come, even after the costume has been removed," Nelson said. "Get your pet used to the costume well in advance of the holiday by giving it treats while wearing part of the costume, and then later, all of the costume to help the pet become more familiar with it." Unknown visitors in scary costumes and loud noises can cause even the most social and/or calm animal to be frightened or show unexpected aggression. Nelson offers these tips if your pet is one that becomes anxious from noise and activity: ●Keep animal kenneled away from the activity or make a comfy spot in a back room. ●Turn on a radio or TV to help drown out noise caused by ringing doorbells and excited children. ●Greet visitors and hand out treats at the end of the driveway.&nbsp;

If your pet is one that gets severely distressed during this time, Nelson advised owners to speak with their veterinarian to determine if sedatives are an option and can be prescribed. Nelson said to also be aware of these other possible Halloween hazards for your pet: ●Keep pets inside to protect them from tricksters. Cats, especially black ones, are often sought after with cruel intentions during Halloween and caution needs to be exercised during this time to keep them safe. ●Ensure your pet has proper forms of identification, such as a microchip, collar or tags, should they run off. A reflective collar may also help others to spot your pet should it go missing at night. ●Keep pets away from electrical cords and decorations. Chewing on electrical cords can lead to life-threatening electrocution and burns. Decorations using corncobs, strings or tassels can be ingested and cause obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract. ●Keep lit pumpkins and candles out of reach, as they can burn your pet. A frightened or curious pet also can tip over a candle, which could lead to a house fire. Consider using battery-operated lights instead. Pumpkins can be a source of toxic mold if ingested. ●Keep glow sticks away from pets. While not poisonous, glow sticks have a very bitter taste and can cause irritation to the mouth. Pets, especially cats, may drool uncontrollably and become very agitated. Some glow sticks contain a small glass vial that when broken, activates the glow stick. The glass can be harmful if ingested. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, Nelson said to call your veterinarian, the ASPCA Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 immediately for advice.

The Kansas Wesleyan Music Department has announced the theme for Christmas by Candlelight.

When He Comes to Reign will be the theme for this year's musical holiday event, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. Dec. 4 in Sams Chapel. Christmas by Candlelight is open to the public at no charge and no ticketing process is required.

“Christmas by Candlelight is always a highlight of Salina’s Christmas season,” said James McAllister, Music Department chair. “We look forward to seeing friends, family, alumni and community members at the performance. Working with high schools from throughout the area is a tremendous opportunity to open the Christmas season.”

The Dec. 4 performance will include high school musicians from Hutchinson, Sacred Heart, Salina Central, Salina South, and Southeast of Saline.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $288,000 project is part of the city's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance program.

Additionally, there will be homemade concessions. The Prairie Patch Cafe will feature Southeast of Saline's famous chili and cinnamon rolls, along with many other menu items.

A number of Southeast of Saline students will be involved in this year's event. Some are volunteering to help vendors unload and set up their booths. Other students plan to help serve food. Some students even plan to have their own booths to raise money for their organizations. Student groups include the National Honor Society; the Family, Community &amp; Career Leaders of America; Future Farmers of America, the Sparklers Dance Team, and more.

The Tenfold Scholars Program will award scholarships to 10 high school valedictorians from Kansas high schools each year, starting in the fall 2023 semester. The scholarships will cover the total cost of tuition for four years, room and board during the freshmen and sophomore years, minus other grants or scholarships, and a laptop. "K-State Salina provides a learning experience unlike any other institution," said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean. "Students learn by solving real-world industry problems in a collaborative environment, allowing individual strengths to shine in a supportive environment and developing the knowledge and skills to be successful. Our approach prepares students to be able to start their career ahead of other graduates, which is why we are committed to making access to our institution as accessible and affordable as possible." To be eligible for the K-State Salina Tenfold Scholars Program, the student must be named a valedictorian of a Kansas public or private high school, have a minimum GPA of 3.95 and a minimum score of 32 on their ACT or 1420 on the SAT by April 1 of their senior year. K-State Salina offering valedictorian scholarship program

America will soon be heading to the polls again. If you’re like millions of your fellow Americans, you’re feeling a little anxious about the outcomes. Elections create anxiety and make us feel small because they cause us to face this truth: There’s&nbsp;so much&nbsp;that’s out of our control.&nbsp;We get one vote. That’s it. But regardless of the outcome, I promise the world&nbsp;will&nbsp;keep turning. Don’t let anxiety and fear steal your joy, mental health or determination to do what’s right during this season. Here are a few ways to deal with election anxiety as we head toward Nov. 8. &nbsp;

You&nbsp;must&nbsp;vote. You have to. Voting is your opportunity to let your voice be heard. It’s your responsibility to participate in making this country a better place—for yourself, your family and your neighbors. Take ownership of your life and your future by casting your ballot.

Voting is one of our sacred rights as citizens of this country. Even if our democracy is flawed at times (and it is), we get to carry on a legacy that was hard won by generations of courageous women and men before us. The only way this democracy stops working is if the people stop participating.

Have you heard the term&nbsp;doomscrolling? It’s the habit of mindlessly scrolling through the latest videos, articles and tweets, searching for the next shocking headline. We’ve all been there—it feels like being caught on a hamster wheel of death and destruction. And that’s not much of an exaggeration, because a steady diet of catastrophic news—especially when you can’t do much about it—is bad for your health. Information that creates fear, panic and stress triggers a complex physiological reaction. Your heart rate and blood pressure spike, and stress hormones flood your body. It’s hard to sleep, focus, rest and breathe.

On the side of each electronic device is an off button. Use it.

By now, you know who you’re voting for (and by the way—everyone around you does too, so there’s no need to keep arguing and adding to the noise). You don’t have to keep flooding your brain with the latest arguments and opinions and predictions. Just put down the phone. Protect yourself by setting boundaries for when and how often you’ll access media of any kind.

Very few of us will ever make a big splash in Washington, D.C., but you&nbsp;can&nbsp;make a difference in your neighborhood, town and state. In fact, you can make more of an impact on this level than you realize. Decisive action helps reduce anxiety because it empowers you to focus on what you can control.&nbsp;

Read up on your local candidates. Learn what they stand for, and talk to people in your community about them. Who are the judges, representatives, senators, school board members and city commissioners on your ballot? Their time in office will directly impact your streets, your kids’ classrooms, and how local businesses are run. &nbsp;

You don’t have to hold political office to model what it means to be a good citizen. And if you haven’t noticed, we’re in need of some good citizens! Whether we realize it or not, our families, coworkers, internet friends and real friends are watching us. They’re paying attention to our bickering, our complaining and our mindless fixation on our screens.

Being a good citizen looks like getting intentional about kindness. Tip your waiter or waitress obnoxiously. Be grateful with salespeople. Let folks over in traffic. If you’re in a season of financial blessing, pay for someone’s groceries. Take your dog for a walk and pick up trash in your neighborhood while you’re out.&nbsp;

Specific to the election, I’m going to take my son with me when I vote. I want him to sit in that line with me. He’s 12—it will be painful for all of us—but it’s important to me that he has memories seared in his heart and mind about how important this was for his dad and for our country.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Make time for rest, kindness . . . and play

Make time to just be a human being. Laugh. Plan a super hot surprise date for your spouse. Get your friends together to kick a soccer ball around. Take your family on a walk around the neighborhood and wave at people in crosswalks.

Let’s choose to be kind over the next couple of weeks. We’re better than how we’ve been acting.

Connect with others and value your community

I want you to think of valuing your community in two ways. First, when you’re feeling anxious, it’s a sign that you’re feeling disconnected. Spend time with those who support and love you—your spouse, your children and your friends. Talk about your fears and listen to the fears of others. Seek to listen first and explain second.

Next, I want you to value people who don’t align with you politically. No matter who wins, we’re going to pump gas next to each other at the same stations. We’re going to wait in the same carpool lines to get our kids from school. We’re going to share meals next to each other at restaurants. Let’s be with one another as human beings and choose not to go on the offensive.

Folks, we must choose to move forward, united as one group of people, doing the best we can.

On Monday, Vogts Parga Construction of Newton will open the parking lot west of N. Fifth Street between E. Iron Avenue and E. Ash Street.

During a period of just seven weeks, including a number of rain days, Vogts Parga and their subcontractors:

●Removed and replaced 3,336 square yards of old pavement, equal to half a football field;

●Installed 853 feet of curb and gutter, equal to about two city blocks;

●Installed two 30 foot tall parking lot lights;

●Installed more than 2,100 feet of parking lot lines.

In addition to updating the old parking lot infrastructure, the project created fourteen additional parking spots that will be well utilized by Downtown and Salina Fieldhouse patrons for years to come.

The $470,000 project was funded by New Market Tax Credits.

Blue-green algae advisories continue for local, area bodies of water

The competitive grant, through the Kansas Leadership Center, will help K-State Salina continue cultivating a culture that embraces change, tackles problems and seizes opportunities. As part of the Leadership Transformation Grant, K-State Salina has been awarded 60 spots, meaning that faculty and staff can partake in the training, regardless of position or title. K-State Salina's mission starts with the development of leadership and this grant is one way the campus is investing in its faculty, staff and students to develop leadership capacity. This is the second year in a row that the K-State Salina campus has been selected for the Leadership Transformation Grant, as the campus provided 40 participants training in 2022. "K-State Salina is eager to continue our partnership with the Kansas Leadership Center," said Kirsten Zoller, executive director of strategic initiatives at K-State Salina. "The Kansas Leadership Center principle of 'Leadership is not an authority position, but rather an activity' is a value that our campus has adopted to empower our employees so we can continue to improve our organizational and communication skills day by day." In addition to the 60 spots for training, the campus core team will lead additional programming and learning opportunities that amplify the Kansas Leadership Center's dynamic program experiences. The grant additionally comes with further resources and consultation from the organization. K-State Salina receives Leadership Transformation Grant

A Salina man is missing a pickup after it was stolen east of the city earlier this week.

Vincent Raetz, 59, of Salina, reported that sometime between 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. Thursday, someone stole his blue, 1995 GMC Sierra pickup from where it was parked in the 1700 block of E. Old Highway 40 near the ADM elevator where he works, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

The key was in the visor and the pickup was unlocked, Soldan said.

The pickup had a Kansas license plate of 422PCM. The pickup had rust on the driver's side of the cab and the wheelwells, Soldan said. The pickup also had a sticker in the back window with the words "Preserve wildlife. Pickle a squirrel." on it. The pickup also contained jumper cables, a $150 socket set, a $65 1.5 ton jack in a case, and some fence insulators, he said.

On Oct. 7, officers with the Salina Police Department received a report of a burglary at Reanimated Customs, 1745 N. Ninth Street. 

In the early morning hours, an employee noticed movement on the business' surveillance cameras. The employee went to the business to investigate and found an unknown suspect had broken a window and gained entry into the business. More than $13,000 in tools were stolen from inside.

Sure, it sounds like he has been immature when it comes to your household finances, but you made the decision to hide things. You chose to do this instead of talking to him about your concerns.

Let’s start here. Tell your husband you need to talk to him about something important, and sit down together with no distractions. Explain what’s been going on, and that you’re sorry for not being honest about things, but you also need to speak up and tell him why you were doing this secretly. If you were afraid to disagree with him, tell him that. Tell him why, too, and let him know you just want the two of you to have a successful financial future, and that you’re committed to never hiding things again.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

DAVE SAYS: Honesty is a necessity

A year ago Thursday, Saline County officials broke ground on the new Saline County Jail and sheriff's office.

"With construction slated for substantial completion in 11 more months, construction is at the halfway point," Saline County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes noted in an announcement.

To mark the occasion, the county commissioners' meeting on Tuesday "will consist of a study session held onsite at the construction trailer just west of the job site (parking lot entrance off of Front Street between Woodland and Pacific Avenues). The meeting, which will begin at 9:00 am, is a public meeting like all meetings of the Commission and members of the public will be able to join Commissioners along with construction team members for a review of progress," Smith-Hanes noted.

Following the study session, commissioners will be offered individual site tours, however those tours will not be available to the public, nor will a quorum of commissioners be present due to safety concerns on the work site.

The next regular monthly jail update is scheduled for the county commission meeting on Nov. 8, Smith-Hanes noted.

Next Saline County Commission meeting a study session at new jail site

The Tammy Walker Cancer Center’s Medical Oncology and Hematology Department has received a three-year re-certification from the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®). 

The voluntary program is an effort to help medical oncology practices assess the quality of care they provide patients using nationally recognized standards.

To become QOPI® Certified, practices have to submit to an evaluation of their entire practice and documentation standards. The QOPI® Certification Program staff and task force members then verify through an on-site survey that the evaluation and documents are correct and that the practices meet core standards in areas of treatment, including:

• Creating a safe environment—staffing, competencies and general policy

• Treatment planning, patient consent and education

• Safe ordering, preparing, dispensing and administering chemotherapy

• Monitoring after chemotherapy is administered, including adherence, toxicity and complications

• Chemotherapy orders and drug preparation

• Monitoring and assessment of patient well-being

“A significant portion of QOPI® Certification revolves around creating a culture of performance improvement,” said Melanie Leepers, cancer program manager at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center. “This includes analyzing our efforts documented in patient records to evaluate the quality of treatments received, including symptom management and consideration for a patient’s overall health. This information is then used to drive our performance improvement initiatives focused on patient safety and outcomes.”

The Tammy Walker Cancer Center’s Medical Oncology and Hematology Department was first certified by QOPI® in 2018. Nearly 300 practices around the United States are currently QOPI® certified.

“Practices that re-certify demonstrate passion for quality care," said ASCO Chair Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, FACS, FASCO. "By opting to dedicate time and resources toward this certification, they exemplify what all providers should strive for, in not just meeting guidelines and standards, but exceeding them.”

UPDATE: The City of Salina has updated its leaf collection guidelines and enhanced its collection zones map. Those changes are reflected below.

Now that the leaves are beginning to fall, the City of Salina has announced the scheduled for its annual curbside leaf collection.

General Services staff will be conducting curbside leaf collection from Nov. 7 to Dec. 30, weather permitting.

"As the weeks progress, staff will provide updates to help keep everyone wishing to participate in the program properly informed," the department noted in a news release.

Leaf collection participant guidelines and information

To help staff collect all the leaves set out by the public this season, included below are the participant guidelines as provided by General Services.

●Rake and pile leaves between the curb and sidewalk. If no sidewalk exists, pile leaves directly behind the curb. Staff will not be picking up bags nor collecting leaves in the alleys, on private streets, or commercial properties.

Tree limbs and branches will not be collected.●Don’t rake or blow leaves into the street as this can be a hazard to traffic and is a violation of City Code. Additionally, placing leaves in the street may cause problems for our storm drainage systems.●Don’t park vehicles directly in front of or behind leaf piles, as this makes collection more difficult for our crew.●Have your leaves ready for collection on the first day of the schedule for your respective zone.●There will only be one round of curbside leaf collection in each zone; however, customers may call in to report locations if they feel they may have been missed by the leaf collection crew or when weather conditions or late leaf deposits require additional collection.
