Essays by 35 Salina and Saline County residents and 24 brief vignettes from other residents are featured in a new book published by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

Many and Varied Paths: Real-Life Stories from the Kansas Plains, a Mennonite Press publication, is the brainchild of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities commissioner Mike Durall who was responding in part to the department’s mission “to change lives and build community.” He asked the contributors to think about a life-changing moment that helped shape who they are today.

“Each day, we encounter friends, family members, colleagues, and strangers as we go about our normal routines. Yet we rarely know what is truly in their hearts and souls,” Durall said.

The stories are a glimpse into the writer’s world.

A special reading of selected essays and a discussion with the authors and editor is planned for 7 p.m. Nov. 16 in the lobby of the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue.

The contributors come from diverse backgrounds and share personal stories about challenges, triumph, loss, and perseverance. The writing styles each reflect the author’s voice creating an authentic collection of voices from across the region.

Regarding his aspirations as editor of the book Durall offered, “I hope this book will encourage us to look kindly upon one another with compassion and understanding because we are all wayfarers on life’s uncertain journey.”

Private contributions covered the production costs, and city funding was used for editorial expenses. Copies are available at the Salina Public Library and other publicly accessible spaces such as waiting rooms, school libraries, non-profit agencies, and other community venues. The books are also for sale at the Smoky Hill Museum Store.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Main Street program announced Monday it is seeking new communities to join the program in 2023. 

On Nov. 14, at 10 a.m., the program will host a virtual application workshop for communities interested in the program.

“My administration rebuilt economic development tools like the Kansas Main Street Program, and it has since been a crucial part of preserving and growing Kansas downtowns,”&nbsp;said Governor Laura Kelly.&nbsp;“I encourage more Kansas communities to join this program and strengthen their economy.”

Kansas Main Street provides technical assistance and support for communities working to revitalize their downtown area by focusing on four points — economic vitality, design, promotion, and organization.&nbsp;

Communities wishing to submit applications will be required first to attend the virtual application workshop, which will explain the Main Street Approach and the process for successfully completing the application.

Applications for the Kansas Main Street program will open on Dec. 5 and close on Feb. 3, 2023. Applications will be reviewed in February, with new communities announced in March.

“Since Governor Kelly brought the Kansas Main Street program back in 2019, ten communities have been added, bringing the total number of designated communities to 35,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said.&nbsp;“These Kansas communities once again have the resources and tools they need to enhance the quality of life and breathe new life into their communities and historic commercial districts.”

Benefits of earning designation as a Kansas Main Street community include:&nbsp;

●Comprehensive technical assistance from the state and national programs to further economic development downtown.

●Training in strategic planning, program capacity-building, and organizational management for the Main Street organization.

 ●Individualized training for Main Street managers, boards, and other Main Street participants.

On Monday, work began for a bridge replacement on Shipton Road and a bridge removal on Granville Road, just east of Kansas Highway 143 in Saline County.

During construction, Shipton Road and Granville Road will be closed at the location where the contractor is actively working on the bridge. Local traffic will follow a signed detour via N. Ohio Street and Interstate 70.

In celebration of Veterans Day and in recognition of the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the need to connect them to resources available to assist them and their families, a proclamation supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans will be presented to the Saline County Commission at tomorrow's 9 a.m. meeting.

If adopted, various Saline County buildings will be illuminated green through the 13th as part of Operation Green Light to shine a light on the needs of veterans.

"Shining a green light is one small way we can let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported," said Bob Vidricksen, Saline County Commissioner and Army veteran. "I encourage everyone to join us in expressing our profound gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions our veterans and their families made on the battlefield and at home."&nbsp;

In addition to lighting county buildings, residents and businesses are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends.&nbsp;

While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (Nov. 7 -13th), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round. Residents can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.&nbsp;

Operation Green Light is a new national collaborative initiative of the National Association of Counties (NACo) to support military veterans.

A local man was arrested on multiple requested charges after an incident at a north Salina convenience store Saturday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were sent to Casey's General Store, 500 N. Ohio Street, at approximately 3 p.m. for the report of a male subject with a gun, knife, and hammer. They made contact with Carlito Morales, 32, of Salina, who had two knives and a hammer.

Officers also made contact with Morales' 55-year-old girlfriend, who told them that while she and Morales were in the vehicle, he brandished a hatchet and demanded her car keys. She was able to get out of the car and called the police. Morales then went into Casey's, Forrester said.

When officers attempted to arrest Morales, a physical altercation ensued and Morales allegedly kicked one of the officers. At one point during the altercation, Morales was tased and he attempted to take the taser away from the officer, Forrester said. Morales was believed to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, he added.

Morales was finally arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

A desire to learn a new photography technique has led to a gallery exhibition for Salinan Tanner Colvin.

Weecha, a blend of photography and videography opened today in The Gallery at Kansas Wesleyan University.

The exhibition features Wichita War Dancer, a member of the Tohono O’dham and Ponca nations who has been performing the war dance for several years. Wichita War Dancer has traveled across the world, performing and educating groups about his culture and its history. In 2021, he earned a world championship honor for his war dance performance.

A public exhibition reception is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Dec. 2 and will include a performance by Wichita War Dancer at 6:30 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Auditorium.

Colvin, a 2011 graduate of Kansas Wesleyan, said the exhibition evolved from his desire to learn a new photography technique: shutter drag. 

Colvin explained that shutter drag both freezes and blurs motion.

"So he started out and I opened the shutter. A flash went off and then he had 20 to 30 seconds to move around. Once he moved around, that's where you get the kind of blurry motion I call 'watercolor.'"

After finding a YouTube video on how to use shutter drag, Colvin began looking into who he might know who danced, leaning more toward traditional dance, such as ballet. Colvin said he happened to stumble across Wichita War Dancer on a Kansas photography Facebook group and contacted him about being the subject of a photo shoot using shutter drag. The two exchanged several emails and phone calls and Wichita War Dancer agreed to the photo shoot.

The two met at Salina's Stiefel Theatre in early 2020 and Colvin spent approximately six hours making photos while Wichita War Dancer danced.

Colvin said he was quite pleased with how the photographs turned out.

"The name of the show, Weecha, is a Native American term that means 'to be proud of significant accomplishment,'" Colvin said. "This is my first show since college, so this space is a little different to me. Usually my stuff is very 'shoot it and get it done' journalism."

While the two were busy with the photo shoot, they talked about what would happen next with the photos.

"I had wanted to do some smaller prints to show off his regalia, because in these bigger ones, you don't really get to see what he is wearing. A lot of it is homemade," Colvin said.

From there came the idea of also including a video of Wichita War Dancer dancing.

"I figured that if people can't be here on Dec. 2 to see him dance, they might not get the motion and emotion that he has in this dance, so that's where the video came into play," Colvin said.

The video, which Colvin recorded himself, includes a short interview with Wichita War Dancer.

The 26-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between midnight and 11 p.m. Saturday, someone entered his residence in the 1200 block of N. 11th Street and stole a Diamond Deploy bow and the hard case it was in, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

The bow was gray with orange and gray strings and the case was gray and green.

There were no signs of forced entry, Forrester said.

David Youtsey, 85, of Salina, backed his 2007 Ford Ranger out of his driveway in the 1400 block of Austin Circle, across the street, and into his neighbor's garage and house, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. He then left the scene.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. Friday.

Forrester said an officer located Youtsey driving north on S. Ohio Street, stopped him, and brought him back to the scene. 

The neighbor's house and garage sustained significant damage, Forrester said. The pickup sustained extensive rear-end damage.

Youtsey was cited for failure to report an accident that caused damage, Forrester said.

To help staff collect all the leaves set out by the public this season, included below are the participant guidelines as provided by General Services.

●Rake and pile leaves between the curb and sidewalk. If no sidewalk exists, pile leaves directly behind the curb. Staff will not be picking up bags nor collecting leaves in the alleys, on private streets, or commercial properties.

●Leaf piles will not be collected if mixed with other debris. Tree limbs and branches will not be collected.

●Don’t rake or blow leaves into the street as this can be a hazard to traffic and is a violation of City Code. Additionally, placing leaves in the street may cause problems for our storm drainage systems.

●Don’t park vehicles directly in front of or behind leaf piles, as this makes collection more difficult for our crew.

●Have your leaves ready for collection on the first day of the schedule for your respective zone.

●There will only be one round of curbside leaf collection in each zone; however, customers may call in to report locations if they feel they may have been missed by the leaf collection crew or when weather conditions or late leaf deposits require additional collection.

Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - Two grants from the McPherson County Community Foundation will help Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum to make critical repairs to the Old Mill.

“We’re thankful that the foundation is recognizing the value of the mill and museum to this community and its heritage,” said Caroline de Filippis, Community Development Director of the museum. “These are valuable steps to making sure the mill stays strong.”

More than $100,000 of estimated repairs are urgently needed to preserve and protect the Smoky Valley Roller Mills, which in 2023 will celebrate 125 years since its construction.

This work includes repairing brick and mortar on exterior walls, protecting the mill’s foundation with better water remediation and drainage, and replacing deteriorated boards in the scale house that were a safety hazard to guests.

The McPherson County Community Foundation awarded $10,000 in a general grant, as well as a $10,000 Lindsborg David Nutt Grant, named after the Lindsborg resident who passed away in 2017 and whose namesake provides grant funds for charitable causes located in Lindsborg.

The museum has also recently applied for a Heritage Trust Fund (HTF) grant from the Kansas Historical Society for the mill repairs. The HTF grant requires 20% matching funds, which the $20,000 from the foundation is intended to cover.

Grants to help with repairs to Old Mill in Lindsborg

After elections, many Americans will soon watch a re-run of the 1946 classic It's a Wonderful Life.&nbsp;

What directions will our elected officials take us? On one side we have George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) who gave up his personal dreams in order to manage a “building and loan” to help his community. On the other side, we have the rich and greedy banker Henry Potter who runs most of the town without compassion. To some extent, they reflect the polar positions in the election we just endured. Will the U.S. be seen as having compassion or be a bastion of selfishness?

While we continue to view ourselves as having the most superior economic and governmental model on earth, a series of international studies show that the U.S. is nowhere near the top in nearly any measure of governance, happiness or affluence.

Kathleen Frydl, notes in The Conversation how “The U.S. is becoming a ‘developing country’ on global rankings that measure democracy, inequality.” She points to the United Nations Office of Sustainable Development measure of 17 factors, where the U.S. has dropped from 32nd to 41st worldwide, placing the U.S. next to Bulgaria. Countries that continue to rank at the top are Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Austria and Germany. While we still consider ourselves to be a rich and “developed” country, we have now sunk to a level with countries that are considered “developing countries.” &nbsp;

Frydl also notes how The Economist’s Democracy Index 2021 has moved the U.S. down to the level of “flawed democracy.” Again, Norway, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, etc. lead the 21 countries in the full democracy levels. The U.S. is 26th and in the second group of countries facing serious challenges to their governance.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development uses the Gini coefficient, a calculation based on income equality within a nation, with ‘zero’ being equal incomes and ‘one’ reflecting unequal incomes. The U.S. ranks 35th between Lithuania and Bulgaria with a score of 0.49. The U.S. was at 0.43 in 1990, so we have seen an increase in income inequality in the last 30 years. Norway, Finland and Sweden again rank in the top ten for income equality.

Many European students who attend U.S. universities come from countries where everyone gets health care. They are puzzled by our unwillingness to provide health care for all Americans. International college students arrive to find much lower standards of living than they had assumed from world media. &nbsp;

The Alliance of Democracies Foundation commissioned the Latana polling company to conduct a survey of 50,000 individuals from 53 major countries during February through April of 2021. 44 percent of those surveyed viewed the U.S. as a threat to their democracy. Only 38 percent feared Chinese influence and only 28 percent expressed a fear of Russia. When The Guardian newspaper summarized these results, this large percentage who think the U.S. is a bigger threat to democracy in their country took many by surprise. This perception of America as a threat to democracy has been increasing, with the greatest increases seen in Germany and to a lesser extent in China. European democracies are also generally negative about the United States. “The biggest perceived threat to democracy isn’t foreign election interference, Russian influence, or the power of Big Tech—it’s economic inequality.”

When asked about having the right amount of democracy, the citizens of Taiwan, South Korea and China topped the list! To Americans, the Democracy Perception Index 2021 data released was a surprise. South Korea and Taiwan are recognized as having forms of democracy, but mainland Chinese also think that they also have the “right amount” of democracy.

In these last weeks we have seen the rapid turnover in British prime ministers without any election, the Italians install their most far right leader since World War II, and the Israelis hold their fifth election in four years. To many Asian cultures, the constant chaos and redirection of these forms of Western democracy are problematic. They want stability, not continuous change.

So when we again watch the re-run of It’s a Wonderful Life, we might consider whether the future of the U.S. under our newly scrambled leadership will follow (Jimmy Stewart’s) George Bailey. —Or will we eventually move to the slums of Potterville?&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>By JOHN RICHARD SCHROCKAfter elections, many Americans will soon watch a re-run of the 1946 classic It's a Wonderful Life.&nbsp; What directions will our elected officials take us? On one side we have George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) who gave up his personal dreams in order to manage a “building and loan” to help his community. On the other side, we have the rich and greedy banker Henry Potter who runs most of the town without compassion. To some extent, they reflect the polar positions in the election we just endured. Will the U.S. be seen as having compassion or be a bastion of selfishness? While we continue to view ourselves as having the most superior economic and governmental model on earth, a series of international studies show that the U.S. is nowhere near the top in nearly any measure of governance, happiness or affluence. Kathleen Frydl, notes in The Conversation how “The U.S. is becoming a ‘developing country’ on global rankings that measure democracy, inequality.” She points to the United Nations Office of Sustainable Development measure of 17 factors, where the U.S. has dropped from 32nd to 41st worldwide, placing the U.S. next to Bulgaria. Countries that continue to rank at the top are Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Austria and Germany. While we still consider ourselves to be a rich and “developed” country, we have now sunk to a level with countries that are considered “developing countries.” &nbsp; Frydl also notes how The Economist’s Democracy Index 2021 has moved the U.S. down to the level of “flawed democracy.” Again, Norway, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, etc. lead the 21 countries in the full democracy levels. The U.S. is 26th and in the second group of countries facing serious challenges to their governance. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development uses the Gini coefficient, a calculation based on income equality within a nation, with ‘zero’ being equal incomes and ‘one’ reflecting unequal incomes. The U.S. ranks 35th between Lithuania and Bulgaria with a score of 0.49. The U.S. was at 0.43 in 1990, so we have seen an increase in income inequality in the last 30 years. Norway, Finland and Sweden again rank in the top ten for income equality. Many European students who attend U.S. universities come from countries where everyone gets health care. They are puzzled by our unwillingness to provide health care for all Americans. International college students arrive to find much lower standards of living than they had assumed from world media. &nbsp; The Alliance of Democracies Foundation commissioned the Latana polling company to conduct a survey of 50,000 individuals from 53 major countries during February through April of 2021. 44 percent of those surveyed viewed the U.S. as a threat to their democracy. Only 38 percent feared Chinese influence and only 28 percent expressed a fear of Russia. When The Guardian newspaper summarized these results, this large percentage who think the U.S. is a bigger threat to democracy in their country took many by surprise. This perception of America as a threat to democracy has been increasing, with the greatest increases seen in Germany and to a lesser extent in China. European democracies are also generally negative about the United States. “The biggest perceived threat to democracy isn’t foreign election interference, Russian influence, or the power of Big Tech—it’s economic inequality.” When asked about having the right amount of democracy, the citizens of Taiwan, South Korea and China topped the list! To Americans, the Democracy Perception Index 2021 data released was a surprise. South Korea and Taiwan are recognized as having forms of democracy, but mainland Chinese also think that they also have the “right amount” of democracy. In these last weeks we have seen the rapid turnover in British prime ministers without any election, the Italians install their most far right leader since World War II, and the Israelis hold their fifth election in four years. To many Asian cultures, the constant chaos and redirection of these forms of Western democracy are problematic. They want stability, not continuous change. On Nov. 7, 2013, shares of Twitter went on sale to the public for the first time; by the closing bell, the social network was valued at $31 billion. (The company would go private again in October 2022 after Elon Musk purchased the social media platform for $44 billion.)

In 1917, Russia's Bolshevik Revolution took place as forces led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin overthrew the provisional government of Alexander Kerensky.

In 1940, Washington state's original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, nicknamed "Galloping Gertie," collapsed into Puget Sound during a windstorm just four months after opening to traffic.

In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt won an unprecedented fourth term in office, defeating Republican Thomas E. Dewey.

In 2018, a gunman killed 12 people at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California, before apparently taking his own life as officers closed in; the victims included a man who had survived the mass shooting at a country music concert in Las Vegas.

In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden clinched victory over President Donald Trump as a win in Pennsylvania pushed Biden over the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes; the victory followed more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in ballots. Trump refused to concede, threatening further legal action on ballot counting. Chanting "This isn't over!" and "Stop the steal," Trump supporters protested at state capitols across the country, echoing Trump's baseless allegations that the Democrats won by fraud.

Ten years ago: One day after a bruising election, President Barack Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner both pledged to seek a compromise to avert looming spending cuts and tax increases that threatened to plunge the economy back into recession. A 7.4-magnitude earthquake killed at least 52 people in western Guatemala.

Five years ago: Democrats Ralph Northam in Virginia and Phil Murphy in New Jersey were the winners in their states' gubernatorial elections. President Donald Trump arrived in South Korea, saying efforts to curb the North's nuclear weapons program would be "front and center" of his two-day visit. Former star baseball pitcher Roy Halladay died when the small private plane he was flying crashed into the Gulf of Mexico; the 40-year-old was an eight-time All-Star for the Blue Jays and Phillies. Twitter said it was ending its 140-character limit on tweets and allowing nearly everyone 280 characters to get their message across.

One year ago: Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an attack by armed drones on his residence in Baghdad; officials said seven of his security guards were wounded. Dean Stockwell, a former child actor who gained new success in middle age in the sci-fi series "Quantum Leap," died at 85. Eighty-three-year-old M.J. "Sunny" Eberhart of Alabama strode into the record books as the oldest hiker to complete the Appalachian Trail. John Artis, who was wrongly convicted with boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in a triple murder case made famous in a song by Bob Dylan and a film, died at his Virginia home at age 75.
