Veterans Day to start off cold; below average temps through weekend

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois has announced that the 2022 first half tax payments are due on Dec. 20.

The second half tax payments are due on May 10, 2023.

DuBois said the tax statements will be mailed out on approximately Nov. 23.

"Please send the remittance stub from the bottom of the tax statement with the payment. Please remember to indicate on the stub if you want a paid receipt returned to you. Can’t find your statement? Call the Treasurer’s Office at (785) 309-5860, or email us at <a href="mailto:sc.treasurer@saline.org">sc.treasurer@saline.org</a>, for the amount due and the tax ID number. A copy of the statement can be emailed or mailed upon request," DuBois said.

Additionally, DuBois noted that if 2021 taxes have not yet been paid, interest is due. 

"Please call the Treasurer’s Office for the correct amount prior to sending payment," he said.

The people who love you will also love to help you.</li><li>Think experiences over expenses.&nbsp;Like every classic Christmas movie teaches, the holiday season is really about community and connection. Try a new activity or experience that doesn’t cost money, like volunteering at a food bank as a family or hosting a game night for your neighborhood. There are tons of ways to spread holiday cheer without using your emergency fund.</li>

This voluntary recall is isolated to three batches of Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough tubs from NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® that were produced August 1-3, 2022. These products were distributed to retailers nationwide.&nbsp;This recall does not involve any other NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® products, including other varieties of Edible cookie dough or Ready-to-Bake cookie dough.

While no illnesses or injuries have been reported, we took action out of an abundance of caution after a small number of consumers contacted Nestlé USA about this issue.

Consumers who may have purchased these three batch codes (22135554RR, 22145554RR, 22155554RR) of Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough tubs from NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® should not consume the product and should return the product to the retailer where it was purchased for a replacement or refund. For any further support needed, please contact Nestlé USA at (800) 681-1678 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. EST.

Nestlé recently initiated a separate and unrelated recall for NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with Fudge Filling. Following each instance, we took immediate action to address the specific issue. We work closely with our suppliers and factory teams to ensure that our products are safe and meet the expectations of our consumers.

We are working with the U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA) on this voluntary recall and will cooperate with them fully.

Nestlé USA: Voluntary recall of Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough tubs

The upcoming Veterans Day holiday brings with it local government closings.

City of Salina and Saline County offices and buildings will be closed on Friday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. They will return to regular hours on Monday.

On Friday and Saturday, the City of Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill and sanitation collection crews will maintain their regular schedules, according to information from the City of Salina General Services Department.

The Household Hazardous Waste, Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center, and General Services facilities will be closed Friday. The Salina Drive-Thru Recycling Center will be open Saturday during its normal business hours: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., the General Services Department noted.

The Salina Drive-Thru Recycling Center will be open Saturday during its normal business hours: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., the General Services Department noted.

ABILENE - After a multi-year absence, the Heart of American Band is back!

Sponsored by the Arts Council of Dickinson County, the 32nd Heart of America Band concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Nov. 20 in the auditorium of Abilene High School, 1400 N. Cedar Street. The concert is open to the public at no charge.

The Heart of American Band is comprised of 70 musicians whose experience spans decades, including professors, instructors, and students.

"All are playing for the love of music and to share with the community. You'll no doubt hear familiar tunes ranging from pop music, patriotic music, movie tunes, and classic hits," the Arts Council of Dickinson County noted in a news release.

By merging transit and bikeshare into one experience with Transit, OCCK Transportation and KANcycle are making it easier to keep North Central Kansas moving.&nbsp; In the last three years, bikeshare has seen increased popularity.&nbsp; By bringing these services together in Transit, KANcycle and OCCK Transportation are taking connectivity a step further, creating a combined option that brings mobility options together in one place.

KANcycle unveils bikeshare integration in Transit app

A Salina man was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly struck an EMS driver who was there to check on him.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that EMS personnel were dispatched to 1805 S. Ninth Street for a welfare check on a possibly intoxicated person who was reported to be passed out in the parking lot of Smokes For Less. When they arrived at the scene, the man, who was then alert and verbal, approached the EMS personnel and allegedly was using profanity.

The man, identified as Tyrone Chavez, 43, of Salina, was reported to have struck the driver through the open window of the EMS unit, at which point, police were called to the scene.

When officers arrived, they found Chavez on the ground with some firemen on top of him, Hanus said.

Chavez was arrested on a requested charge of battery, Hanus said.

The 48-year-old EMS driver was not injured.

UPDATE: Warm, windy, wind advisory on Wednesday

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancher There’s something to be said about waking up to the sound of rain on a roof and thunder rumbling in the distance. Add in a dash of lightning momentarily highlighting an otherwise dark sky, and we have the start of a glorious fall day! &nbsp; It’s no secret I prefer the warm sunlight to awaken me from my slumber. But, after experiencing an incredibly hot and dry year that undoubtedly impacted our crops and attitudes, I jumped out of bed before my alarm clock went off to start my day. After all, it was raining, and it would continue to rain for the duration of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp; It was a cold and dark morning, which required wool socks and warm coffee as we got the kids moving and prepared for school. Generally, I’m not a fan of feeling cold in the morning, but I threw on a sweatshirt and happily packed the kids’ lunches and then gleefully made their breakfasts because it was raining and it would continue to rain for the remainder of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp; After getting the kids on the bus, my husband and I decided to make a trip into town to enjoy a warm breakfast together at our local cafe. It’s a tradition we haven’t practiced in a while but enjoy whenever there is a morning rain. &nbsp; I quickly put my hair up in a ponytail while walking out the door and cheerfully accepted that I’d probably have a bad hair day. But that didn’t matter. It was raining and it would continue to rain for the rest of the day.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Oh, how this morning rain was perfectly timed! After all, we had just wrapped up our fall harvest the day before feeling tired and deflated knowing it wasn’t the greatest of harvests. We gave thanks at the dinner table for the harvest we did have, asked for the rain forecast to hold, and then went to bed.&nbsp; &nbsp; And in the cold and dark early hours of the morning, the rain indeed arrived. And it remained a steady presence for the rest of the day and into the evening. &nbsp; The sun remained hidden behind the clouds and the temperature required me to keep my wool socks and sweater on all day. We enjoyed warm soup for lunch and office work that had been neglected because we haven’t had an opportunity to break from fall harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; To others it was probably an otherwise no good, dreary and drab November day. A day that one would prefer to avoid for the sake of comfort, morale, or even style.&nbsp; &nbsp; But for me, it turned out to be a glorious fall day! All because I awoke to the sound of rain.&nbsp;

On Nov. 9, 1989, communist East Germany threw open its borders, allowing citizens to travel freely to the West; joyous Germans danced atop the Berlin Wall.

In 1620, the passengers and crew of the Mayflower sighted Cape Cod.

In 1872, fire destroyed nearly 800 buildings in Boston.

In 1918, it was announced that Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II would abdicate; he then fled to the Netherlands.

Five years ago: During a visit to Beijing, President Donald Trump criticized what he called a "very one-sided and unfair" trade relationship between the U.S. and China, but said he didn't blame China for having taken advantage of the U.S. Actor John Hillerman, best known for his supporting role on the TV series "Magnum, P.I.," died at the age of 84 at his home in Houston.

One year ago: A federal judge rejected former President Donald Trump's request to block the release of documents to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The Oklahoma Supreme Court overturned a $465 million opioid ruling against drugmaker Johnson &amp; Johnson. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service struck down a Trump-era rule that would have opened millions of acres of forest in Oregon, Washington and California to potential logging. Max Cleland, who lost three limbs to a hand grenade in Vietnam and later became a groundbreaking Veterans Administration chief and U.S. senator from, died at his Atlanta home at 79. Brian Williams, who anchored NBC's "Nightly News" before losing that job in 2015 for making false claims about his wartime experiences, announced that he was leaving the network after 28 years.

Tracey Mann wins reelection to U.S. House in Kan. 1st District

Friday through Sunday, Salina Central High School Theatre is scheduled to present Nell Benjamin's comedy, The Explorers Club.

The production is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Running time is approximately two hours including a 15-minute intermission.

Tickets are on sale online and also will be available at performances. Ticket prices for the production are $7 for adults and $5 for students, with credit service charges added to this price if using a credit card.

This production is being submitted to the International Thespian Festival for adjudication and if the production is selected, student will present to a full theater of students and teachers from around the country and internationally in Bloomington, Ind., in June of 2023, according to Barb Hilt, Salina Central High School theatre teacher.

"This is such a fun production and the cast has really done an amazing job with their roles. We have had so much fun and laughter working on this show! The crew is amazing as well and we have excellent stage managers! I think this is one of the productions that if you miss seeing it, you will regret it because everyone will be talking about what fun they had watching for years to come!" Hilt said.

Salina Central thespians to present 'The Explorers Club'

The Greater Salina Community Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2023-2024 school year.

This year more than $129,000 will be distributed to area students through the foundation’s 32 scholarship funds. Eligible scholarship applicants include graduating high school seniors, current college students and non-traditional students.

Each scholarship has a unique set of criteria established by donors to the foundation.

Depending on the scholarship, awards range from $250 to $10,000, and some are renewable for up to four years. Scholarships are not necessarily based on financial need.

All scholarship applications must be submitted through the community foundation’s online scholarship portal by February 15, 2023. Scholarships will be awarded by mid-April. The application portal and individual scholarship guidelines can be found at <a href="http://www.gscf.org/scholarships">www.gscf.org/scholarships</a>.

Last year, the foundation awarded more than $95,000 to students across north-central Kansas.

This fall, Salina Public Schools administrators refreshed their approach to absenteeism. 

USD 305This fall, Salina Public Schools administrators refreshed their approach to absenteeism. One shift they made was toward more and earlier communication about absences between schools and families. The goal is to reduce the number of students who reach the point of chronic absenteeism.This year, each school receives absenteeism data about its students from a district team. Using these weekly updates, school leadership teams monitor attendance patterns. Students can fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks, so early intervention is key. Support and resources are connected to families and often the assistance helps reduce missed school days.If a student misses 10 percent or more of the days school has been in session, they are considered chronically absent. Being chronically absent from school makes it hard for a student to keep up with the pace at which they are expected to learn and grow, causing the student to fall behind. When the level of chronic absenteeism is reached, the school sends letters home or places phone calls to the parents/guardians. When absenteeism continues, school staff meet with the family and student to put interventions into place.Educators know that a number of factors can contribute to chronic absenteeism. By keeping an open line of communication, school staff work with families to build good attendance habits.Absenteeism has been an issue schools have battled historically through the lens of truancy. School attendance during COVID-19 was affected by sickness and quarantines. When all schools returned to normal operation during the second half of the 2021-2022 school year, the absenteeism rate was higher than normal.With that information in tow, district leaders recalibrated, grounding their strategies in a collaborative approach between school, parents and students.
