The Smoky Hill Museum is seeking teams to enter the Chili Cook-off contest at the Street Fair which takes place on Sept. 24.

Entries are being sought to cook up their own unique brand of chili. The first six teams to enter will compete for the People’s Choice Award and best-decorated booth. Winners will receive a combination of cash and prizes valued at $150. The deadline to enter is Aug. 31, 2022.

Entrants must prepare a minimum of five gallons of chili. Public sampling begins at noon. In order to make this less of a burden, the Museum will provide ingredients to help each team get off to a good start. Teams will receive a generous starting kit of ingredients that includes 15 lbs. of beef, and a mess of onions and tomatoes. From there, each team can add their own unique ingredients to make the chili something special.

K-State beef stocker field day slated Sept. 29

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. A&nbsp;warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.&nbsp; Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.&nbsp;

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&nbsp;watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.&nbsp;

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.&nbsp;

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.&nbsp;

WOODBINE - A minor earthquake shook part of east-central Dickinson County this morning, slightly more than a day since another minor quake struck.

A 2.0 magnitude quake struck south-southwest of Woodbine at 10:32 a.m. Thursday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. It was centered just north of 1100 Avenue between Union Road and Trail Road.

On Wednesday at 10 a.m., a 2.1 magnitude earthquake struck west of Woodbine.

Local, area residents win Kansas Lottery hunting, fishing license contest

MCPHERSON - Authorities in McPherson are investigating scams of alleged family members needing to bond out of jail.&nbsp;

From the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/McPherson-County-Crime-Stoppers-300318421920">McPherson County Crime Stoppers Facebook page</a>:

On Saturday, August 6th, 2022, the McPherson Police Department was dispatched to the Law Enforcement Lobby reference a past scam.

Through the investigation, it was learned the reporting party received a scam phone call by an individual who claimed to be a family member. The individual advised they needed $12,000 for a bond to get out of jail. The reporting party was then contacted by an individual who claimed to be an attorney who told them to call a bonds company in the area. The reporting party contacted Eagle Bail Bond’s and he was notified they did not have any information reference the family member being in jail. The reporting party went to the bank and retrieved the $12,000 in cash in $100 bills. The reporting party was later contacted by an individual who claimed to be an employee of Eagle Bail Bonds. The reporting party met with an unknown hispanic male, who went by the name of “Garcia”, who drove a 2005-2010 orange 4-door Sedan. The reporting party described the male to be approximately 18 years old with short hair. The reporting party gave the money to “Garcia” and observed him to leave. Case Number 2022-1405

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office took a report of the similar incident with the same amount money being scammed. The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office Case Number 22-0557.

Thousands lost in jail bonding scams in McPherson County

MANHATTAN — Twenty-five students from seven schools in Kansas have been awarded the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies Certificate. 

Of these, 24 were awarded the general certificate, five were awarded the animal science certificate and one was awarded the plant systems certificate. High schools with students earning certificates include Buhler, Centre, Ellsworth, Greeley County, Holton, Republic County and Wellington.

Students have completed requirements in the areas of classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE) and FFA. They have demonstrated excellence in agricultural knowledge, career readiness and leadership development. Students must also maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in all school courses to earn the certification.

“The criteria to achieve these certificates represents more than just one specific exam, event, or activity on a single day but a culmination of successful involvement and achievement in multiple activities&nbsp;over four years of high school,” said John Clark, the agriculture education teacher at Buhler High School. “These students who earned these certificates should be proud&nbsp;of this high honor, which is only accomplished by students who are very well-rounded in a variety of requirements.”

KDA is committed to establishing a dynamic and well-equipped workforce that meets the diverse needs of the agriculture industry today. “Growth in Kansas agriculture will depend on a strong workforce, so we need skilled young people like these to support the future of the industry,” said Russ Plaschka, KDA marketing director.&nbsp;“These certificates show they have developed critical skills that will help them in their future careers, whether they end up on dairies, ranches, farms, agribusinesses, research labs, or in the variety of other employment opportunities in agriculture.”

FBI moves to seize bank deposits in alleged $10M fraud of Kan. foster care provider

A pursuit through the northern part of the city ended early this morning when a Salina Police Department K-9 caught up with the driver who was then fleeing on foot.

The incident began at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday when an officer noticed that a 2000 Cadillac without a license plate light failed to use a turn signal in the 700 block of N. 12th Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Before the officer could initiate a stop, the car accelerated away from the scene and the officer began a pursuit of the car through parts of north Salina.

Forrester said the maximum speed during the pursuit was 50 mph.

The car entered Thomas Park, 1525 N. Ninth Street, and traveled to the west end of the park, where the driver jumped out of the car and fled on foot into the woods, leaving the car in gear. The car struck a fence and then came to rest when it hit a tree, Forrester said. A male passenger was still in the car.

The pursuing officer deployed K-9 Tyrann, who chased the driver approximately 250 yards into the woods before apprehending him.

The driver, identified as Tyler Paxson, 32, of Salina, was found to have a suspended driver's license. He also was found to allegedly be in possession of methamphetamine, Forrester said. Additionally, the car had on it a license plate stolen from another vehicle.

Paxson was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

●Felony interference with a law enforcement officer

No charges were requested for the passenger, Forrester said.

K-9 apprehends Salina man after pursuit in northern part of city

What a driver on Interstate 135 believed was a structure fire early this morning south of Salina turned out to be a hay bale fire.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a driver on I-135 saw a large fire in the 8000 block of Centennial Road at approximately 12:42 a.m. Thursday. The driver pulled off the highway and discovered that a stack of 360 square hay bales was on fire.

The driver pulled off the highway and discovered that a stack of 360 square hay bales was on fire.<figure>

Blaze destroys $36,000 worth of hay bales south of Salina

Police are investigating a burglary at a central Salina pizza place.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 10:15 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday, someone entered Little Caesars Pizza, 645 E. Crawford Street, and stole just under $700 from the safe and the $400 video surveillance system.

Today, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that the Biden-Harris Administration has awarded $46.9 million to support two projects in Kansas from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program to help move forward on projects that modernize roads, bridges, transit, rail, ports, and intermodal transportation and make our transportation systems safer, more accessible, more affordable, and more sustainable. Included is a project in Salina.

This year’s total allocations nationwide include more than $2.2 billion thanks to the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides an additional $7.5 billion over five years for the program to help meet the strong demand to help projects get moving across the country. &nbsp;

“We are proud to support so many outstanding infrastructure projects in communities large and small, modernizing America’s transportation systems to make them safer, more affordable, more accessible, and more sustainable,” Buttigieg said.&nbsp;“Using funds from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this year we are supporting more projects than ever before.” &nbsp;

Projects were evaluated on several criteria, including safety, environmental sustainability, quality of life, economic competitiveness and opportunity, partnership and collaboration, innovation, state of good repair, and mobility and community connectivity. Within these areas, the Department considered how projects will improve accessibility for all travelers, bolster supply chain efficiency, and support racial equity and economic growth – especially in historically disadvantaged communities and areas of persistent poverty. &nbsp;

In Kansas, the following projects will benefit from RAISE awards:&nbsp;

Old Smoky Hill River Bridge Replacement&nbsp;– The City of Salina will receive $22.1 million to replace seven bridges over the Old Smoky Hill River, construct approximately 3.4 miles of multi-use accessible trails, improve seven pedestrian crossings, improve three railroad-pedestrian crossings, and install trail lighting. In addition, the project will construct a new, multi-modal hub, three pedestrian bridges, two new electric vehicle charging stations, a pedestrian underpass, a pedestrian boardwalk, and five new recreational boat launches. The new bridges will improve mobility, reduce congestion, and reconnect the City of Salina's underserved, neighborhoods to recreational features. The project also upgrades river channel culverts that are currently prone to flooding.

Flint Hills Trail: Connecting Communities, Cultures, and Landscapes&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will receive $24.8 to construct approximately 40-miles of the Flint Hills Trail in Kansas, nearly completing this 118-mile linear park "rail-trail." The project includes drainage improvements, pipes, culverts, bridges, base improvements, limestone surfacing, fences, gates, bollards, safety improvements and signage. The trail will offer an alternative to driving as well as provide outdoor recreation opportunities in a rural area that is currently fragmented with very few public outdoor recreational areas. There is also opportunity for the project to boost recreation and nature tourism, as evidenced by establishment of ten new businesses related to the trail in the past three years. Planning efforts have considered inputs from the communities being served through four workshops, and the trail will use inclusive interpretative signage and storytelling strategies that portray history and respect the Kaw Nation.&nbsp;

Levi Johnson, senior,&nbsp;Salina, and Caden Stirtz, senior, and Graysen Yahne, sophomore, both from&nbsp;Liberty, Missouri, all received an ASHRAE Society Scholarship of $5,000. Noah Turner, junior,&nbsp;Shawnee, received a $3,000 award. All four students are majoring in architectural engineering. No other school had more than two ASHRAE Society Scholarship winners. "ASHRAE, as well as other professional organizations, understand the importance of attracting and retaining top students to the building design and construction industry," said Julia Keen, Bob and Betty Tointon engineering chair and professor of architectural engineering and construction science. "ASHRAE has made it a priority to help students pursue the path of higher education through their continued development of endowed scholarships. Salina's Johnson, others receive ASHRAE scholarships at K-State

New moms and moms-to-be living in Dickinson County are invited to attend the fourth annual Community Baby Shower, back after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The baby shower is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 in Sterl Hall. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. The event is only open to pregnant women and post-partum women who have delivered by June 1 or later.

“The goal of the event is to help bring awareness to pregnant and postpartum women, as well as their families and support systems, about the services that are available to them as an individual or as a family, be it transportation services, early childhood services or whatever,” explained Dickinson County Health Department Deputy Director Brenda Weaver, RN.

“I think there’s a lack of knowledge of what services are available,” she added.

Typically, the event attracts about 50 to 60 expectant and new moms, along with their spouses, friends and others.

Sixteen vendors, representing groups and organizations from Dickinson County and also from the region and across the state, are scheduled to attend.

The new moms and pregnant women are asked to register, making them eligible to collect tickets from the vendors to be used for gift basket drawings.

“While the registering is going on, people can help themselves to food, cake and drinks while waiting for the event to start,” Weaver said.

The baby shower begins with introductory remarks, followed by representatives from some of the various agencies presenting information about the services they offer. Afterwards, new moms and pregnant women can visit the vendors who interest them for tickets to be used in the drawing for gift baskets. Typically, the gifts may include a crib, glider rocker and a breast pump.

“We will also be offering “cocoon” Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), a strategy that protects newborns by vaccinating their close contacts against pertussis with the Tdap vaccine. Close contacts include parents, siblings, grandparents, other family members, family friends, child care providers and healthcare staff.

“The cocoon Tdap is specifically geared towards the caregivers other than the mom. We usually have a few people who get that vaccination that night,” Weaver said. “I feel like with our vaccination efforts we are being proactive by vaccinating those around infants and small children and minimizing the incidents.”

This year’s event is sponsored by the Dickinson County Health Department through funds provided by the Maternal Child Health Block Grant. West’s Country Mart is donating the cake, Weaver said.

Vendors planning to attend include: The Abilene Public Library, Auburn Pharmacy, Central Kansas Mental Health, Dickinson County Health Department - HD/WIC, Safe Kids Dickinson County/EMS, Heartland Early Education, KS Quitline, Heartland Health Care Clinic, K-State Research and Extension, MomLife, Neighbor 2 Neighbor, OCCK/Infant Toddler Services, Parents as Teachers, Quality of Life Coalition and Riley County Child Care Licensing.
