David Condos, a reporter for High Plains Public Radio and the Kansas News Service, has won a National Edward R. Murrow Award — one of the most prestigious prizes in broadcast journalism — for his coverage of western Kansas, its ongoing problems with water, its history of racism and how meatpacking transformed the region.

Condos won the award for Excellence in Writing and was selected as the national winner from among this year's regional Murrow award recipients across the country.

Condos is a reporter based in Hays for High Plains Public Radio and the Kansas News Service, which is a statewide collaboration of public radio newsrooms. This is the first-ever national Murrow award for HPPR in the station’s 42-year history.

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) recognized his work for three stories written and reported in western Kansas:

“A national organization recognized what’s obvious to people in Kansas, that David is a talented and serious journalist,” said Scott Canon, the managing editor of the Kansas News Service. “His work has brought important stories to a statewide and national audience. David’s ability to report complicated stories in easily digestible ways is a rare thing.”

The award was given based on “excellence in writing that conveys the feeling and significance of events to the listener or viewer.” The Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in news, recognizing the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community.

Condos took home<a href="https://www.hppr.org/hppr-arts-culture-history/2022-06-01/david-condos-hpprs-kansas-news-service-reporter-honored-at-2022-edward-r-murrow-awards" target="_blank">&nbsp;three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards earlier this year.</a>

Additionally, he received two national awards from the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA): First place in Enterprise reporting for his series on racism in Kansas, “Race in the Free State,” and second place in Photojournalism for his&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hppr.org/hppr-news/2021-12-11/russell-kansas-bids-farewell-to-its-most-favorite-son-bob-dole" target="_blank">photo of Elizabeth Dole</a>&nbsp;at the funeral of former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole.

Condos will be recognized alongside all of the national Murrow award winners at the RTDNA’s gala in New York City in October.

Condos wins National Murrow Award for coverage of western Kansas

This Kansas business is for the birds – gamebirds, that is. Today we’ll meet a young ruralpreneur who has created a business of raising pheasants and guiding pheasant hunts in his home region of rural Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week we learned about Bethany Wallin, who founded a physical therapy and fitness center in her community of Courtland. Today we’ll meet her husband and learn about his business.&nbsp;

Clay Wallin and his friend Nathan Lindberg are owners of Heartland Gamebirds. Wallin and his wife are from Republic County originally. Clay went to K-State and earned degrees in golf course management and agronomy before he and Bethany were married. He worked in crop seed sales in Kansas and Nebraska. For six years, they lived in Manhattan.&nbsp;

In 2018, Bethany took a position at the hospital in Belleville and they moved to Clay’s hometown of Courtland. Clay became an independent Channel seedsman and raised corn and soybeans.&nbsp;

Clay also joined his boyhood pal Nathan Lindberg and another friend in creating a pheasant business. “We grew up pheasant hunting together,” Wallin said. He remembered the excitement of the beginning of pheasant season. “Opening weekend was better than Christmas for me.”&nbsp;

Because of their location in the heartland of the nation, they named their business Heartland Gamebirds. Today, they raise thousands of pheasants, lease many acres of farm ground for hunting, provide guided hunts, and have even opened a hunting lodge in Courtland.&nbsp;

“We aim to provide (customers) with the best upland hunting experience the Heartland has to offer,” the website states.&nbsp;

“We raise our own birds,” Wallin said. “This year we’ll raise 11,000 birds, and our goal is to get to 25,000.”&nbsp;

Heartland Gamebirds raises and sells birds by contract to others in addition to their own local use. “The guided hunts are growing,” Wallin said. “Our goal is to double the number of hunts each year.”&nbsp;

During busy times, two other individuals help Wallin and Lindberg guide groups of hunters.&nbsp;

In 2020, the business purchased a historic downtown building that had been built in the 1890s. “It was one of the first buildings in Courtland,” Wallin said. They gutted and remodeled the building which has become their hunting lodge. It operates as an Airbnb, but during the busiest part of hunting season from November through February, the lodge is reserved for hunters only.&nbsp;

For the hunters, they provide home-cooked meals and will clean, process and vacuum package the birds.&nbsp;

“I’m a huge hometown supporter,” Wallin said. “I want to see more vehicles on Main Street and draw people to downtown. This old building helps us tell the story. Every customer we have asks about the history of the place.”&nbsp;

For many people, part of the experience is reconnecting with the memory of a time when they might have gone hunting with a dad or grandpa. “Usually there’s one in every crowd that grew up doing this, and now they’re wanting to share it with other people,” Wallin said. “There’s a camaraderie to the hunt. Our greatest joy is helping bring back good memories for them.”&nbsp;

He adds: “This is a people business. We’re tailored to the smaller groups so we can build relationships. It’s fun to meet people from other walks of life. We’ve made friends and great connections.”&nbsp;

Repeat customers have been a foundation of the business as it has grown. Many customers have come from the east coast. “We’ve had people from Florida, Washington, D.C., California, Utah, Wyoming, Michigan, North Carolina,” Wallin said.&nbsp;

During the recent pandemic, business actually increased as people wanted to get away from the crowded cities.&nbsp;

It's an impressive record for a business based in the rural community of Courtland, population 294 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

(Kenneth Frazier was one of the few African Americans to head a Fortune 500 company. The CEOs of Intel and Under Armour also resigned from the American Manufacturing Council later in the day.) A jury in Denver, siding with pop star Taylor Swift, ordered a fired radio DJ to pay her a symbolic $1 after concluding that he had groped her.

One year ago: The Taliban captured Mazar-e-Sharif, a large, heavily-defended city in northern Afghanistan, and approached the capital Kabul, less than three weeks before the U.S. hoped to complete its troop withdrawal. President Joe Biden authorized an additional 1,000 U.S. troops for deployment to Afghanistan to ensure what he called an "orderly and safe drawdown" of American and allied personnel. A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, turning thousands of structures into rubble; the quake left more than 2,200 people dead and injured more than 12,000 others.

The Quality Control Specialist (QCS) at Weddle and Sons will develop and demonstrate skill in overseeing the day-to-day operations of a residential roofing crew and will show an advanced level of initiative in communication with supervisors, subordinates, and clients. The starting hourly rate in the range of $16.00 - $20.00 based upon level of experience, paid biweekly, per 40 hours worked in a week with overtime paid at time-and-a-half.

MANHATTAN – Beginning composting? Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham recommends using a bin to ensure a successful compost pile. &nbsp;

“A number of things are needed for building a compost pile, including a bin, a source of water, ‘green’ materials, and ‘brown’ materials,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Green materials include wet and fresh materials, such as grass clippings, food scraps, weeds, or manure. Brown materials include dry and usually dead material, such as fallen leaves, sawdust, newspaper, and wood chips.&nbsp;

A bin will help keep all the compost materials packed together and speed up the process, he said. By ensuring the pile is properly constructed, it will also ensure the compost pile generates enough heat to destroy pests and disease organisms. &nbsp;

Choosing the right compost bin is relatively simple. First, Upham says to ensure the size is adequate. &nbsp;

“Our goal is to have a bin that will hold at least a 3 X 3 X 3 foot high mound of material,” he said. “Anything less than this and the process will be slow and will not produce sufficient heat to kill insect and disease pests.”&nbsp;

For home gardeners, Upham said a 5 x 5 x 5 bin is the maximum size that could be easily handled.&nbsp;

Although compost bins can be purchased, they can just as easily be made or repurposed from another bin. Upham recommends a bin made of discarded pallets or a ring of woven wire. &nbsp;

Once a bin has been chosen or made, Upham suggests a three bin system. The system consists of one bin for holding materials until enough have been collected to make a complete compost pile; another for the actual composting process; and a third to hold finished compost. &nbsp;

KWU prioritizes student well-being, adopts safety, security software

There may be no worse assault on our freedom of speech than a law that would permit the government to tell us to “shut up” when it comes to discussion and debate on a major social issue of our time – and to punish us if we don’t.

Freedom of speech under the First Amendment is rooted in the concept of a “marketplace of ideas,” where information and robust, uninhibited exchanges are protected to ensure all can speak and be heard.

As a concept, most everyone agrees with that approach, particularly those in the minority of the moment, who need protection from being silenced by what the nation’s founders saw as a potential “tyranny of the majority.”

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade is producing yet another attempt to sabotage the marketplace approach to debate — to, in effect, tell us to “shut up or else.”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wfae.org/politics/2022-08-01/draft-sc-abortion-bill-raises-eyebrows-among-some-first-amendment-experts" target="_blank">Proposed model legislation by the National Right to Life Committee</a>&nbsp;is being promoted to state legislatures with a goal of creating criminal and civil penalties for speech seen to be “aiding or abetting” abortions.

The vagueness of the proposed laws raises real constitutional questions. Would news reports about abortion that include comments by choice advocates, or that simply mentioned states where abortion remains lawful, spark legal action against journalists or news organizations that run afoul of this law?

Would academic papers or lectures about the issue that note pro-choice arguments place authors or speakers in jeopardy? Would websites that offer information to those merely investigating out-of-state abortion options draw prosecution or civil lawsuits simply for providing information without direct advocacy? What if those websites are operated by a person or organization in a state where abortion remains legal but are merely accessed by someone in a state where it is not?

The First Amendment demands that our laws are drafted with enough precision that we can understand whether what we say will get us in trouble. This is necessary to ensure that those in power don’t engage in arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement.

It’s an important protection because, unfortunately, our nation has a history of attempts to stifle the open discussion of ideas and proposals that challenge the status quo or that would solidify a temporary political advantage.

For example, in the era leading up to the Civil War, the U.S. Congress responded to annual abolitionist lobbying to outlaw slavery by adopting a ban in 1836 on such proposed legislation, rejecting the First Amendment’s rights of petition.

In some southern and border states, the action was even broader, adopting similar laws to one passed in 1837 in Missouri that banned any anti-slavery speech of any kind and imposed special taxes on abolitionist activities. In that same year, in Illinois – a free state – a mob killed newspaper editor&nbsp;Elijah Lovejoy&nbsp;and destroyed his printing press to silence the abolitionist’s voice.

There were efforts leading up to and during World War I to punish speech that was anti-war, opposed a wartime military draft or that promoted socialism or communism. Some efforts survived court challenges in the name of “national security.” So-called “Red Scare” periods followed both World Wars, with the McCarthy era and “blacklisting” running roughshod over First Amendment rights in the late 1940s and 1950s, fueled by an anti-communist fervor.

In more contemporary times, a lawsuit aimed at silencing civil rights advocates led to a historic U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1964, in The New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, protecting the right to free and unfettered discussion involving elected officials and later to include public figures, even when the speech involved some unintentional errors of fact.

In 2011, a Supreme Court decision rejected a challenge to the tactics of a small group known as the Westboro Baptist Church, which included vulgar attacks on gay people and others. Chief Justice&nbsp;John Roberts&nbsp;wrote: “Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and – as it did here – inflict great pain … We cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker … as a nation we have chosen a different course – to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate.”

The Rev.&nbsp;Martin Luther King Jr., in his final speech before his assassination in 1968, proclaimed the essential nature of First Amendment freedoms to a national debate over social justice: “Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.”

Those who would support laws intending to restrict or silence discussion and debate — by journalists, academics, advocates, or any other citizen — about abortion or any other social issues must understand that providing truthful information is not approval, and that the open exchange of ideas is fundamental to a democratic, self-governing system.

This is necessary to ensure that those in power don’t engage in arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement.It’s an important protection because, unfortunately, our nation has a history of attempts to stifle the open discussion of ideas and proposals that challenge the status quo or that would solidify a temporary political advantage.For example, in the era leading up to the Civil War, the U.S. Congress responded to annual abolitionist lobbying to outlaw slavery by adopting a ban in 1836 on such proposed legislation, rejecting the First Amendment’s rights of petition.In some southern and border states, the action was even broader, adopting similar laws to one passed in 1837 in Missouri that banned any anti-slavery speech of any kind and imposed special taxes on abolitionist activities. In that same year, in Illinois – a free state – a mob killed newspaper editor&nbsp;Elijah Lovejoy&nbsp;and destroyed his printing press to silence the abolitionist’s voice.There were efforts leading up to and during World War I to punish speech that was anti-war, opposed a wartime military draft or that promoted socialism or communism. Some efforts survived court challenges in the name of “national security.” So-called “Red Scare” periods followed both World Wars, with the McCarthy era and “blacklisting” running roughshod over First Amendment rights in the late 1940s and 1950s, fueled by an anti-communist fervor.In more contemporary times, a lawsuit aimed at silencing civil rights advocates led to a historic U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1964, in The New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, protecting the right to free and unfettered discussion involving elected officials and later to include public figures, even when the speech involved some unintentional errors of fact.In 2011, a Supreme Court decision rejected a challenge to the tactics of a small group known as the Westboro Baptist Church, which included vulgar attacks on gay people and others. Chief Justice&nbsp;John Roberts&nbsp;wrote: “Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and – as it did here – inflict great pain … We cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker … as a nation we have chosen a different course – to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate.”The Rev.&nbsp;Martin Luther King Jr., in his final speech before his assassination in 1968, proclaimed the essential nature of First Amendment freedoms to a national debate over social justice: “Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Preferred is a qualified applicant with teaching, counseling, or social work experience. A Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) certificate is not required.

Police are investigating the theft of a briefcase from an SUV parked at a Salina health club.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 56-year-old Salina woman walked out of Genesis Health Club, 1820 S. Ninth Street at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday to find that someone had broken out the rear passenger window of her Toyota Venza and stolen a leather briefcase valued at $200.

A Salina woman walked out of the Salina Family YMCA Thursday afternoon to find that someone had shot the driver's side window of her car.

The 71-year-old woman walked out of the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive, at approximately 4:20 p.m. and discovered a shattered window on her 2020 Lexus ES 350, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The window had possibly been shot with a BB, he said.

Forrester said police were waiting on security video to see if they could determine who fired the shot.
