On Monday, at approximately 7:20 a.m., officers of the Salina Police Department were sent to the Salina Family YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive, regarding multiple vehicle burglaries. 

It was discovered a female suspect stole several vehicle keys from unsecured lockers in the locker room. She went into the parking lot and stole property, to include financial cards, from those vehicles. The victim’s financial cards were used at two businesses in Salina. 

Surveillance video shows a second female suspect using the cards. She was dropped off at the businesses in a gray four-door passenger car.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about multiple vehicle burglaries

A new state tax credit program allows people to make donations to Salina Area Technical College, and cut at least 60 percent of the donation from their Kansas income tax bill, and cut their federal income taxes as well.

For example, someone who donates $10,000 to Salina Tech in 2022 would receive a $6,000 credit on their Kansas income taxes for 2022. They could also claim the remaining $4,000 as a charitable deduction on their federal and state tax return.

The tax credit program is in effect starting with 2022, and is effective for donations made prior to Jan. 1, 2027. It applies to all of the state’s technical colleges and community colleges, and each college is limited to issuing $500,000 in credits in any one year; individual donations to any one college are capped at $250,000 a year.

"The types of gifts we're allowed to accept with this time-limited program are cash donations, stocks and bonds, personal property items, and real estate donations," said Brenda Gutierrez, executive director of the foundation.&nbsp;

By state law, donations through this program are dedicated to the college’s capital outlay fund, which is used to purchase equipment, fund projects such as new buildings or expansions, and deferred maintenance.

“Salina Tech’s enrollment has grown by more than 40 percent in the past six years, and the tools and technology our students need to prepare them for successful careers is expensive,” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. “We’re grateful to donors who have helped us keep up over the past several years, and hope this new tax credit will enable more people to consider gifts to the college.”

Like elves in the final stretch before Christmas, three men from UltraShine Holiday Lights braved the November cold Monday to provide some holiday cheer in downtown Salina.

Surrounded by a myriad of boxes full of Christmas tree branches and ornaments, the three worked to build an 18-foot Christmas tree in Campbell Plaza. The tree will serve as the Salina community Christmas tree and will be officially lit Saturday as a part of Salina Downtown's Holiday Festival and Parade of Lights.

"Salina Downtown Inc. is so excited to have a community Christmas tree in downtown Salina in Campbell Plaza. We are grateful to our community partners, the City of Salina and First Bank Kansas, for helping SDI bring this tree downtown. It  certainly was a neighborhood effort and the tree looks perfect!" said Leslie Bishop, Salina Downtown, Inc., executive director.

"Following the Parade of Lights, we will have a tree lighting ceremony with the assistance of Santa Claus and others. Then Don Wagner will perform some live music at the Campbell Plaza stage," she added.

With Christmas music wafting through the air and a recently painted mural as a backdrop, the UltraShine "elves" first connected the two-foot tall sections of the tree tower and then began working their way back down with branches and decorations.

Clearly, this was not their first attempt at holiday decorating.

Chris Rios, who owns UltraShine, said the company has been decorating commercial and residential properties for the holidays for approximately eight years and covers an area stretching from Plainville to Great Bend to Inman to near Abilene. 

The three-man crew, made up of two firefighters and a Kansas Highway Patrol recruit, custom designs and installs the holiday displays for customers. At the conclusion of the holiday season, they take down the displays and store them for the following holiday season, Rios said. Additionally, the crew does maintenance on the displays as needed.

In the off-season, they do permanent lights on commercial structures and houses, landscape lighting, and wedding and event lighting, Rios said.

An average job usually takes an hour and a half, however, new jobs sometimes take a bit longer.

Salina's Campbell Plaza decorated for the holidays

A Salina man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he allegedly threatened others with a machete.

Salina Police Lieutenant James Feldman said this morning that officers were sent to the 2300 block of Chapel Ridge Place at approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a resident there, identified as Ryan A. Hardey, 23, of Salina, who appeared to be intoxicated and allegedly had struck another resident twice.

When Hardey exited a bedroom with a sheathed machete, two other people in the apartment, the resident who was struck and a female resident, tried to stop him from leaving the apartment because they believed he was a threat to himself. At that point, Hardey allegedly threatened to cut their throats with the machete if they didn't let him go, Feldman said.

Officers located Hardey nearby, however, he allegedly did not comply with police instructions and was tased, Feldman said. Officers also located the machete near where Hardey was taken into custody.

Hardey was arrested on the following requested charges, Feldman said.

●Two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

●Aggravated weapons violation by a convicted felon

●Interference with a law enforcement officer

Winter youth CityGo passes go on sale today

Two long-time community volunteers in Saline County were recently recognized by the Central Kansas Extension District (CKD) Governing Body for the unselfish energy and time they have given to the local Extension program. Sharon Zier and Eric Lamer, both of Salina, were named recipients of the 2022 CKD Extension Appreciation Award.

Sharon Zier has been a valuable asset in the Family and Consumer Sciences program area. Over the years, she has helped with financial literacy programs as a small group facilitator and assisted with Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) since Medicare added drug plan coverage. Sharon’s regular clientele has consistently been provided service at the Extension office as well as at the senior center when coordinated SHICK services there prior to COVID.

Eric Lamer and his family have been involved in the local 4-H program in numerous capacities. He was an active member of the CKD 4-H Program Development Committee, served as a fair superintendent for several years in photography and was a board member for the Saline County 4-H Development Fund. Eric has always been willing to step up and help in any area where there is a need, but his passion has always focused around photography. Since 2015, Eric has taken the Tri-Rivers Fair 4-H King and Queen Candidate photographs and has also taken the Outstanding 4-H Member photos as his schedule allowed.

The K-State Research and Extension Appreciation Award was authorized by Extension administration in 1977. Its purpose is to honor individuals, businesses or organizations who have made outstanding contributions to Extension programs in a county or district.

Two areas of light snow will affect the region for today and tonight. 

Central Kansas could see a trace to light dusting of snow today, and southern Kansas could see no snow or a trace for tonight. Any snow amounts will be minimal with no impacts expected.

A mix of flurries and sprinkles will move east to southeast across the region Thursday. Little to no snow accumulation is expected.

The Wood Brothers didn’t know they were making a record. Looking back, they’re grateful for that. &nbsp;

“If we&nbsp;had&nbsp;known, we probably would have been too self-conscious to play what we played,” reflects bassist/vocalist Chris Wood. “At the time, we just thought we were jamming to break in our new studio, so we felt free to explore all these different ways of performing together without worrying about form or structure. It was liberating.”&nbsp;

Recorded live to tape, those freewheeling, improvised sessions became a vast pool of source material from which The Wood Brothers would go on to draw Kingdom In My Mind, their seventh studio release and most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. While on past records, the band—Chris, guitarist/vocalist Oliver Wood, and drummer/keyboardist Jano Rix—would write a large batch of songs and then record them all at once, Kingdom found them retroactively carving tunes out of sprawling instrumental jam sessions like sculptors chipping away at blocks of marble. A testament to the limitless creativity of the unharnessed mind, the record explores the power of our external surroundings to shape our internal worlds (and vice versa), reckoning with time, mortality, and human nature. The songs here find strength in accepting what lies beyond our control, thoughtfully honing in on the bittersweet beauty that underlies doubt and pain and sadness with vivid character studies and unflinching self-examination. Deep as the lyrics dig, the arrangements always manage to remain buoyant and light, though, drawing from across a broad sonic spectrum to create a transportive, effervescent blend that reflects the trio’s unique place in the modern musical landscape.&nbsp;

“My brother came to this band from the blues and gospel world, and my history was all over the map with jazz and R&amp;B,” said Chris, who first rose to fame with the pioneering trio Medeski Martin &amp; Wood. “The idea for this group has always been to marry our backgrounds, to imagine what might happen if Robert Johnson and Charles Mingus had started a band together.”&nbsp;

Lawmaker: Kansas should cut ties with foster care contractor

Hundreds of motorcyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts will be bringing Christmas cheer to those who need it most this weekend.

The riders for the Salina Toy Run will begin to line up at noon Sunday in the southeast parking lot of the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street. The riders will depart at 2 p.m. and will move north on Ninth Street to W. Elm Street. From there, they will go east to N. Santa Fe Avenue, then south to E. Crawford Street. Riders then will go east to S. Ohio Street and south to E. Magnolia Road before turning west to the final destination of  Redeemer Lutheran Church, 743 E. Magnolia Road.

The&nbsp; Salina Toy Run is celebrating 36&nbsp;consecutive years of collecting toys for Ashby House and DVACK (Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas). The event was originally organized by the Golden Eagle Bike Club of Salina. Nearly 20 years ago, after the bike club was disbanded,&nbsp;Jim&nbsp;Trepoy&nbsp;and other volunteers decided to keep the tradition alive.&nbsp;

"Depending on mother nature, we usually have a couple hundred riders participate,"&nbsp;Trepoy&nbsp;said. "We've had as many as 500 in the past."&nbsp;

Following the Toy Run, there will be a chili feed at Schmidt Motos located at 328 N. 12th&nbsp;Street in Salina.&nbsp;&nbsp;

100s of motorcyclists expected for 36th annual Salina Toy Run

A Salina man was arrested after an incident in which the vehicle he was driving crashed into a fire hydrant late Monday night.

An officer was sitting in a parking lot in the 700 block of N. Broadway Boulevard at approximately 11:30 p.m. Monday when he heard a loud crash, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer went south on N. Broadway and found that a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe had struck a fire hydrant in the 500 block of N. Broadway Boulevard before coming to rest in the 600 block of N. Broadway Boulevard.

While making contact with the driver, identified as Manuel Meza, 27, of Salina, the officer realized that Meza was possibly under the influence of alcohol, Forrester said.

At one point, Meza allegedly became aggressive, went at the officer, and was tased, Forrester said.

Meza was taken to Salina Regional Health Center by ambulance to be checked out.

Meza was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

●Driving under the influence of alcohol

●Driving with view impaired (he allegedly had not cleaned ice/snow from windshield)

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens of a bond scam that is increasing in the county.

A person claiming to be a Saline County deputy has been calling and notifing citizens that they have a family member who needs bond money.

"The Saline County Sheriff's Office does not contact family members on behalf of inmates to request bond money. Inmates have access to phones in the Saline County Jail and are given opportunities to make calls to friends and family regarding their bonds," the sheriff's office noted in a news release issued this morning. "At no time will an employee from the Saline County Sheriff's Office call citizens and request bond money from them over the phone."

Persons who have questions about the legitimacy of a phone call regarding this issue can contact the Saline County Sheriff's Office at 785-826-6500.

The Salvation Army, along with Applebee’s, G.L. Huyett, and The Salina Country Club, will once again join forces on the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

Dinners will be carry out only and available at The Salvation Army Community Center at 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue.

Traditional Thanksgiving dinners will be available for drive through pickup at the south entrance of the The Salvation Army Community Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24).

Deliveries for shut in individuals will be available and must be called in by 3 p.m. on Nov. 23.
