Timeshare exit companies advertise a lot. Many "guarantee" they can get you out of your timeshare contract, but sometimes these companies are simply a scam. In a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/11/ftc-wisconsin-attorney-general-take-action-against-timeshare-exit-scammers-cheating-consumers-out-90">case announced Tuesday</a>, the FTC said a company called Consumer Protection Law (one of its many names) didn’t deliver on all its promises.

Read on to learn about staying ahead of the scammers.

According to the FTC, Consumer Protection Law targeted older adults, sending mailers to invite them to in-person presentations. There, they’d use pressure tactics to get people to sign up for their bogus services right away. Customers wound up paying huge fees (anywhere from $5,000 to $80,000)…but the company rarely delivered.

It sounds obvious, but: the best way to avoid timeshare exit scams is to have an exit strategy from the start. Vacation timeshare&nbsp;flyers often draw you in with pictures of sunny beaches and beautiful resort suites. If you go to an in-person&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/timeshares-vacation-clubs-related-scams#sales%20presentations">timeshare presentation</a>, the salespeople make you feel like you're already on vacation. But&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/timeshares-vacation-clubs-related-scams#what%20to%20know">before you sign a timeshare contract</a>, make sure you understand what you’re getting into —&nbsp;and how to get out of it.&nbsp;

If you’re already in a timeshare and want out, start by contacting your timeshare company. Some have exit programs that let you exit for a modest fee. But, if you think you want to hire a company to help you, take some steps before you sign:

●Research the company. Search online for the company's name, plus the words "scam" or "complaint."

●Study the paperwork on your own. Get all promises in writing. It’s your right.

●Ask about your ability to cancel the contract. In certain circumstances you have the right to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buyers-remorse-ftcs-cooling-rule-may-help">cooling-off period</a>&nbsp;— a time when you can cancel the deal after you’ve signed the papers.

One year ago: A jury in Virginia ordered 17 white nationalist leaders and organizations to pay more than $26 million in damages over the violence that erupted during the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in 2017. A federal jury in Cleveland found that CVS, Walgreens and Walmart pharmacies recklessly distributed massive amounts of pain pills in two Ohio counties. (A judge awarded $650 million in damages.) NASA launched a spacecraft on a mission to smash into an asteroid and test whether it would be possible to knock a speeding space rock off course. (NASA said the mission was a success.) President Joe Biden ordered a record 50 million barrels of oil released from America's strategic reserve, aiming to bring down gasoline and other costs. The only person convicted in the 2007 murder in Italy of British student Meredith Kercher, Rudy Guede, was freed after serving most of his 16-year prison sentence. Multi-genre performer Jon Batiste scored the most Grammy nominations with 11.

Ellis County 4-H Council invites Kansas teens to participate in its upcoming “Chat, Don’t Snap” workshop on Dec. 4 from 1-5 p.m. at the FHSU Memorial Union. The event will give teens the opportunity to grow their leadership and communication skills through civil discourse.

Lori Kniffin, Fort Hays State University assistant professor of leadership studies and expert in civic leadership and dialogue, will introduce the importance of civil discourse through a keynote address. Breakout sessions for both parents and their teens will allow each group to practice these vital communication skills. 

The event will conclude with a free concert for all in attendance by the Peterson Farm Brothers. 

Free commemorative t-shirts will be given to the first 100 teens who register, and refreshments will be served.

The event will be hosted by Ellis County 4-H Council and spearheaded by Hays High sophomores Elizabeth Noble, Marisa Wasinger, and John Weisenborn. Attendees will choose to attend sessions with discussions on The Future of Our Environment, Pros and Cons of Social Media, and Guns in America. This event is open to all teens. You don’t have to be a 4-Her to attend!

Sunflower Bank and First National 1870 announce a total donation of $101,895 to schools that participated in the ABC Program for Education’s 2021-2022 school year campaign, which includes $15,636 received by schools in Salina. 

Sunflower Bank originated the program in 2001, and since then has contributed more than $1.6 million to support kindergarten through 12th grade education in the communities it serves. Donations were distributed throughout October 2022 by local branch teams.

“Support for K-12 education is one of the cornerstones of our commitment to our communities. Since 2001, Sunflower Bank has given away over $1.6 million through the ABC Program in direct funding to the schools and students selected by our customers. The ABC Program is a truly meaningful way that we partner with local educational and financial literacy initiatives, and encourage academic achievement in our youth,” said Mollie Carter, Sunflower Bank’s executive chairman.

The ABC Program is funded in part based on customer debit card transactions and new accounts opened. Sunflower Bank and First National 1870 customers have the opportunity to select an ABC Program-registered school to support with each qualifying debit card purchase during the campaign. The standard school donation per transaction is $0.02.* This year for the first time, for every new Elevation Checking account opened from Nov. 15 through Aug. 31, 2023, $5 will be donated to an ABC Program-registered school chosen by the account owner. **

In addition, twice a year all bank branch locations participate in a “Pay for ‘A’s” drawing, with a current drawing period underway through Dec. 31. During this time, branches accept kindergarten through 12th grade students’ report cards for a chance to earn up to $100 for their A grades. This drawing is open to the general public, and no purchase is required for entry. Five contest winners per branch are chosen to receive $10 for every A, up to a total of $100 per student. As an added benefit, schools that participate in the ABC Program will receive a matching donation if one of their student’s report cards is chosen.***

Nobody was injured after a fire at the Salina Landfill Tuesday afternoon.

Salina Fire Department, responded to the blaze at 4292 S. Burma Road and was able to extinguish it.&nbsp;

Firefighters respond to fire at Salina landfill

MANHATTAN – Inflation has increased 13% in the last year, so it is no shock to shoppers that groceries have become more expensive. But Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said that the outbreak of avian influenza in the U.S. also is partly responsible for increased holiday food costs. &nbsp;

“As of Nov. 16, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 50,371,760 birds have been affected, and this includes commercial and backyard flocks. It has been found in 46 states and there are 623 reported outbreaks,” said Blakeslee, who also is director of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>.&nbsp;

Poultry deaths have resulted in meat and egg shortages leading to increased prices of meat and eggs. To save on grocery costs, Blakeslee said consumers can look for stores that may offer a free turkey when buying a certain number of other groceries.&nbsp;

“As a guideline (for buying a turkey), plan about one pound of turkey per person. Try buying a smaller turkey, and supplement with another favorite meat if you are having a large gathering,” Blakeslee said, adding that hosts can share the time and expense with guests by having them bring a favorite food. &nbsp;

Other tips to save on food costs include using coupons, buying only what you need, trying store brands instead of name brands and making a list before you go to the store to reduce impulse shopping.&nbsp;

To guard against poultry that may have been infected by avian influenza, “it is important to handle the meat safely, wash your hands, and cook the poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. This is true for healthy poultry, also,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

Avian influenza can be transferred to humans by close contact with infected birds, Blakeslee said. It is important to not handle birds that appear ill or have died.&nbsp;

Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter" target="_blank">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy. Recent events increase costs in the kitchen this holiday season

A Salina man was arrested on multiple requested charges including aggravated battery and abuse of a child after alleged incidents over a three-week period.

Officers were sent to the apartments at 1310 E. North Street on Monday after a neighbor reported hearing banging and screaming, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

When officers arrived, they made contact with a 42-year-old woman  who lives in the apartment with her two children - ages four and two - and her fiance, identified as Quincy Williams, 29, of Salina. Forrester said the woman told officers that over the past three weeks, she had several altercations with Williams.

She said the first incident occurred approximately three weeks ago in the basement of their apartment when Williams allegedly punched her in the face and ripped an earring from her ear, Forrester said. 

On Saturday, Williams allegedly punched her in the face again, this time while they were in a car at a southwest Salina convenience store. The woman was in the driver's seat, Williams was in the passenger seat, and the children were in the back seat, Forrester said. On Monday, she still appeared to have injuries from the Saturday incident, he added.

On Monday, the woman and Williams got into an argument over gas money. Williams allegedly got upset after making some phone calls and the woman tried to calm him down, Forrester said.

Williams allegedly threw a metal shelf causing a ceramic jar to break. He also allegedly damaged an air conditioning vent, Forrester said.

At that point, the woman went upstairs to where the children were and Williams followed her. Forrester said Williams allegedly began punching the four-year-old girl, and when the woman tried to intervene, Williams allegedly pushed her to the ground. At some point during the altercation, Williams allegedly went to the kitchen and retrieved what was possibly a steak knife.

Forrester said the girl had bruising on her face and a scratch on her chest. She told officers that the scratch came from a knife.

Williams was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Alleged battery, child abuse incidents land Salina man in jail

MANHATTAN — The holiday season is filled with hearty, delicious food, visiting with friends and family, decreased physical activity, busy schedules and weight gain. According to a Kansas State University veterinarian,&nbsp;&nbsp;it is also a time for our family pets to gain weight as well. According to Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://ksvhc.org/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>, many pets gain weight during the holidays due to special treats being consumed and/or a few of those delicious table scraps making it into their bowls as well. Owners also may not be able to be as physically active or have as many play sessions with their pets because of busy holiday schedules. "Table scraps are high in calories and fat, lead to weight gain and can also cause gastrointestinal upset or life-threatening pancreatitis," Nelson said. "I advise owners to offer low-calorie fruits and vegetables — not cooked in butter — as a substitute for other types of table scraps, if they are going to be fed." Nelson offers the following tips to limit pet weight gain during the holidays and throughout the year: • Limit the number of treats fed to less than 10% of total caloric intake. Your veterinarian can help calculate a pet's caloric intake if needed. • Break a single treat into several smaller portions that you can distribute throughout the day. Pets do not know the difference and will consume fewer calories from treat consumption. • Use a treat dispenser or food puzzle to prolong the amount of time it takes a pet to eat and offer mental stimulation. • Reserve some of the daily kibble to feed as treats instead. • Keep your pet out of the dining room when eating and kitchen when cooking to be less likely to succumb to those pleading, big brown eyes that are begging for a bite. For pet owners with less time to exercise or play with pets, Nelson suggests hiring a professional pet walker, family friend or neighbor to walk or play with your pets. Pet day care centers also offer opportunities for pet activity and socialization. K-State veterinarian offers tips to prevent holiday weight gain in pets

The Saline County Expo Center has announced that it is now accepting applications for the Oliver Haag Scholarship for the 2023 school year.

Saline County students graduating high school in 2023 and entering college or a vocational school in the fall and majoring in an agricultural field are eligible to apply. The criteria for this scholarship are community involvement, strong school work ethics, and the desire to continue a post-secondary education in agriculture.

The scholarship is eligible for renewal for up to three years by maintaining a 3.0 GPA and continued enrollment in an agricultural field. Since the Saline County Commission established this scholarship in the name of Oliver Haag in 2001, 47 students have been awarded funds for their agricultural studies.

The deadline for applications is March 6, 2023.

HAYS -&nbsp;For the second year in a row, Fort Hays State University’s financial planning team placed third overall in the national Financial Planning Challenge Competition.

The team, comprised of finance majors, Ethan Lang, senior, Hays; Danielle Riemann, senior, Beloit; and Kaden Wren, junior, Scott City; competed in a three-phase competition. FHSU’s team placed first in phase 1, a written competition. Phase 2 involved an oral presentation, and phase 3, was a game-show-style financial planning knowledge contest.

“To get first place for the written portion of the plan is so impressive,” said Dr. Christina Glenn, assistant professor of finance and financial planning team coach. “They have done an excellent job holding their own against really big programs that have hundreds of students and a lot more money than our program has.”

Seven other universities competed in the finals. Those schools were Utah Valley University (placing first overall), Kansas State University (placing second), Texas A&amp;M University, Ohio State University, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Western Kentucky University, and the University of Arizona.

This was Lang’s third time in the competition, Wren’s second, and Riemann’s first.

“I really learned so much from the competition in general, applying things I learned from my classes,” Riemann said. “It all comes together for that final plan that we were able to put together. It was really cool to see our classroom work put into it and to have it succeed.”

Wren agreed that “learning as you’re doing” was one of the rewarding aspects of the competition, as was the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts to practical scenarios.

“It was a really good learning experience,” he said. “Real world – hands-on.”

Lang said that his three years of experience on the team had shown him ways to improve on past plans. Learning to communicate effectively is likely the most important piece of the competition and of a successful venture into the field of financial planning.&nbsp;

“Our job isn’t just to know the complex, but it’s to make the complex simple for people,” Lang said. “And elegantly simple. If you can’t explain something in a simple way to a client, there is a lack of trust.”

The team has found that they will have additional opportunities to apply their expertise to more real-world situations. Riemann recently accepted a position as a financial planning associate to begin after her graduation in May. Lang, who completed his licensing exams during the summer, has started his own financial planning business. His business will focus on financial planning for younger people.

“Typically, advisors are doing investing, which younger people might not be ready for yet,” Lang said. “That basic building block of planning is super important for young people, and getting them to start five years sooner makes a huge difference in the long run.”

Wren plans to move forward with competing on the financial planning team next year and perhaps complete an internship during the summer of 2023.

“I’m proud of these kids. Not every student is willing to spend at least 45-50 hours outside of their classroom work to participate in this rigorous challenge,” Glenn said. &nbsp;“I can’t say enough good things about them.”

Police are looking for the person who led officers and troopers on a high-speed chase through parts of Salina Friday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that an officer observed a white 2013 GMC Terrain pulling out of a travel center parking lot in the 1900 block of N. Ninth Street at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday. It was believed to have been driven by someone police were looking for, so the officer began following the SUV.

In the 1500 block of N. Ninth Street, the officer observed the driver make a traffic violation. As the SUV turned onto N. Broadway Boulevard, the officer attempted a traffic stop. The SUV pulled into an alley in the 800 block of N. Broadway Boulevard. As the officer attempted to make contact with the driver, the SUV took off at a high rate of speed, and a pursuit began, first in north Salina, then south on Broadway Boulevard to Franklin Street, at times reaching speeds of 90 mph, Forrester said.

Eventually the pursuit moved over to W. Republic Avenue, where the SUV went east toward S. Fourth Street. At that point, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers who were working a saturation patrol in town took over the pursuit. Forrester said the pursuers found the SUV abandoned in the 900 block of S. Fourth Street.

Inside the SUV, law enforcement personnel located a backpack that contained methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Forrester said.

The owner of the SUV, identified as a 30-year-old Salina woman, told police that if someone was driving the SUV, it had been stolen from her driveway in the 200 block of Baker Street as she was out of town.

CORONADO HEIGHTS - Two teens from Lindsborg were injured Sunday night after the pickup they were in rolled coming down the road from Coronado Heights in southern Saline County.

A 17-year-old boy was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Colorado pickup down the hill when the pickup failed to negotiate a curve in the road and rolled at least once, coming to rest on its tires, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. The wreck occurred just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

It is believed that the boy was driving too fast to safely negotiate the curve, Melander said.

Both the boy and a 17-year-old girl who was a passenger in the pickup were taken by EMS to the Lindsborg Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Melander said. They both had been properly restrained in the pickup.

A Salina man who was arrested in connection to a damage to property case added to his requested charges when he allegedly head-butted a paramedic.

Officers were called to the Village Inn, 453 S. Broadway Boulevard, at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday for the report of damage to property. When they arrived, they spoke with the owner who told them that someone broke a window and a picture frame in a room there, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The officers made contact with Matthew Burton, 28, of Salina, who had a cut on his hand. During the investigation, officers determined that Burton was responsible for the damage, Forrester said. 

When officers tried to arrest Burton, he allegedly became disruptive and resisted, causing officers to place him in a wrap restraint system, Forrester said. While Burton was in the restraint system, he appeared to become unconscious, prompting officers to call EMS.

EMS transported Burton to Salina Regional Health Center. At some point, Burton allegedly head-butted a paramedic in the chest twice, Forrester said. Burton was treated and released, and then booked into the Salina County Jail on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Arrested Salina man allegedly head butts paramedic

Last Wednesday, the Kansas Board of Regents vice president of academic affairs told board members that college algebra was for preparing students for calculus, so only 20 percent of majors needed higher-level math. According to the Kansas News Service, he told KBOR “We’re sending students down a road that’s not practical, that’s not really needed, not relevant for their field. So, this is something that doesn’t work very well.”&nbsp; Thus, Regents are considering aligning math requirements with a student’s major. Many more could take statistics instead of algebra.

U.S. undergraduate enrollment has lost almost 1.4 million students nationwide, compared to pre-pandemic levels, and Kansas universities suffered their share of losses. Watering down college requirements appears to be another action to get more high school students to enter college. KBOR already dropped a specific&nbsp; physics or chemistry science requirement they had established back in 1997.

This job-centered mentality is wrong at many levels. First, over 60 percent of public university students nationwide change their major at least once! Students have little prior direct experiences to make a decision on what field they wish to pursue. A spectrum of general education courses across many fields results in well over half switching to a field they had not previously considered. &nbsp;

The second reason all students should take algebra, even if they do not select a science field, is that it changes the way you think. Basic math and business math courses are extensions of 1+1 = 2 simple mathematics. But the A squared + B squared = C squared algebra provides you with a new way to solve problems that you cannot solve with simple mathematics. Even if you graduate in a field that does not involve algebra—and you forget how to do the problems—you retain the mental confidence that when you encounter such a problem, there is a solution possible through algebra. It provides a confidence that is lacking if you never took the course.

Algebra is likewise a critical skill for solving physics, chemistry and some biology problems. But if students can avoid it, those doors will close to students who are among the 60 percent who change major, some who would have switched to these sciences. &nbsp;

Does it matter? You bet it does! Students in East Asia begin studying algebra in fourth grade. Half of their undergraduates in their universities major in STEM subjects. Only 18% of U.S. students major in STEM. China is now number one in number of STEM majors in college (2007), in number of STEM articles in science journals (2017), in number of international patents (2019) and in top one percent of most-cited STEM articles worldwide (2022).

Across the U.S., many states are watering down their educational standards. If Kansas sets aside algebra for non-science majors, they will be following California that just did that last year. Other states are doing the same. We have been eroding U.S. science and science literacy for decades. The U.S. now relies on foreign-born students coming to the U.S. to maintain enrollment in science programs.

The National Foundation for American Policy released its report on “International Students in Science and Engineering” in August 2021. “In 2019, at U.S. universities, there were only 9,083 full-time U.S. graduate students in electrical engineering, compared to 26,343 full-time international students....At U.S. universities, international students account for 82% of the full-time graduate students in petroleum engineering, 74% in electrical engineering and 72% in computer and information sciences, 71% in industrial and manufacturing engineering, 70% in statistics, 67% in economics, 61% in civil engineering, 58% in mechanical engineering and agricultural economics, 56% in mathematics and applied mathematics, 54% in chemical engineering, 53% in metallurgical and materials engineering, 52% in materials sciences and 50% in pharmaceutical sciences.”

The NFAB report continues: “At many U.S. universities, the data show it would be difficult to maintain important graduate programs without international students.” While full-time U.S. graduate students in computer and information science grew 91% (9,042 to 17,334) from 1998 to 2019, the annual number of full-time international grad students grew 310% (10,930 to 44,786). From 1998 to 2019, the number of U.S. grad students in electrical engineering only grew 12% (8,139 to 9,083) while international grad students in this field increased 130% (11,469 to 26,343). These are shortage fields in the U.S. The NFAB report quotes research showing “At the graduate level, international students do not crowd-out, but actually increase domestic enrollment.” Without these international students, primarily from Asia, many U.S. research universities would have to shut down graduate science departments and research programs. Both teaching faculty and researchers would be without jobs.

All of these fields require algebra. This pending KBOR decision merely accelerates the devaluing of U.S. education and increases our reliance on foreign students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It provides a confidence that is lacking if you never took the course. Algebra is likewise a critical skill for solving physics, chemistry and some biology problems. But if students can avoid it, those doors will close to students who are among the 60 percent who change major, some who would have switched to these sciences. &nbsp; Does it matter? You bet it does! Students in East Asia begin studying algebra in fourth grade. Half of their undergraduates in their universities major in STEM subjects. Only 18% of U.S. students major in STEM. China is now number one in number of STEM majors in college (2007), in number of STEM articles in science journals (2017), in number of international patents (2019) and in top one percent of most-cited STEM articles worldwide (2022). Across the U.S., many states are watering down their educational standards. If Kansas sets aside algebra for non-science majors, they will be following California that just did that last year. Other states are doing the same. We have been eroding U.S. science and science literacy for decades. The U.S. now relies on foreign-born students coming to the U.S. to maintain enrollment in science programs. The National Foundation for American Policy released its report on “International Students in Science and Engineering” in August 2021. “In 2019, at U.S. universities, there were only 9,083 full-time U.S. graduate students in electrical engineering, compared to 26,343 full-time international students....At U.S. universities, international students account for 82% of the full-time graduate students in petroleum engineering, 74% in electrical engineering and 72% in computer and information sciences, 71% in industrial and manufacturing engineering, 70% in statistics, 67% in economics, 61% in civil engineering, 58% in mechanical engineering and agricultural economics, 56% in mathematics and applied mathematics, 54% in chemical engineering, 53% in metallurgical and materials engineering, 52% in materials sciences and 50% in pharmaceutical sciences.” The NFAB report continues: “At many U.S. universities, the data show it would be difficult to maintain important graduate programs without international students.” While full-time U.S. graduate students in computer and information science grew 91% (9,042 to 17,334) from 1998 to 2019, the annual number of full-time international grad students grew 310% (10,930 to 44,786). From 1998 to 2019, the number of U.S. grad students in electrical engineering only grew 12% (8,139 to 9,083) while international grad students in this field increased 130% (11,469 to 26,343). These are shortage fields in the U.S. The NFAB report quotes research showing “At the graduate level, international students do not crowd-out, but actually increase domestic enrollment.” Without these international students, primarily from Asia, many U.S. research universities would have to shut down graduate science departments and research programs. Both teaching faculty and researchers would be without jobs. All of these fields require algebra. This pending KBOR decision merely accelerates the devaluing of U.S. education and increases our reliance on foreign students.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas.
