SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 International Truck driven by&nbsp; Yunet&nbsp;Zerquera-Jimenez,&nbsp; 41, Las Vegas, Nevada, was northbound on Interstate 135 nine miles south of Salina.

The truck left the roadway to the right, and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle veered back to the left and the driver overcorrected again causing the truck to overturn.

EMS transported&nbsp;Zerquera-Jimenez to Salina Regional Health Center. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Driver hospitalized in Salina after truck overturns

SALINE COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Salina man Friday connected to a 2011 murder, according to a media release from the agency.

In March of 2019, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance to further investigate the Feb. 17, 2011, death of 39-year-old Carol S. Williams that occurred in New Cambria, Kan. KBI agents initiated an investigation.

Just after 11a.m. Friday, KBI agents arrested Steven Couch, Jr., 51, of Salina, at the Salina Municipal Court, 255 N. 10th Street in Salina. 

Couch was arrested for on requested charges of second-degree murder&nbsp; in the death of Carol Williams. She was his girlfriend at the time of her death.

Following the arrest, Couch was booked into the Saline County Jail. Bond was set at $1 million.

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from Sundowner West Mobile Home Park indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil water advisory rescinded for Sundowner West

Kansas Wesleyan University announced Friday that its recent explosive enrollment growth has continued. KWU began the fall semester with 874 total students, a 7.6 percent enrollment increase in just one year. 

That number also marks a 22.1 percent jump since 2019.

“We are in the midst of a true renaissance at Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, KWU executive vice president for advancement and university operations. “This news is a credit to our admissions office, faculty, coaches and numerous administrative staff, but it’s also a testament to the positive momentum surrounding KWU these past three years. From new facilities to academic success to athletic championships and more, there are many reasons that it’s a great time to be a Coyote. We’re thankful that so many students have become a part of the KWU pack!”

The total number of 874 students includes 744 full-time undergraduates. Overall, KWU’s new undergraduate student count grew from 313 last year to 349 in Friday’s announcement. The MBA program is up 28.8%, going from 52 students to 67 this year, and the 492 students in campus housing are believed to be the most in school history.

“This exciting news is due to the work of many individuals around campus,” said Oliver. “That work, however, is not done. Kansas Wesleyan can reach even greater heights in the near future. We look forward to sharing news of additional growth soon and seeing even more students join us in the years to come.”

Should KWU reach the 900 student figure in 2023-24, it would be the first time in school history it has done so.

Kansas Wesleyan’s enrollment growth continues

Nineteen new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday at a ceremony held in the KLETC Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;

Game Warden Kalaeb Bratton of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief Todd Akerman of the Augusta Department of Safety. Michael Satterlee, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 297th Basic Training Class.

Game Warden Bratton of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks was placed on the Director’s Honor Roll. He was additionally awarded the Larry Welch Academic Award for having the highest total average on the written exams within the class. His final average was 95.70% Officer Mitchell Mays of the Hutchinson Police Department was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot.”

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

Dickinson County's Asmus graduates from KLETC Friday

At 3:54 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Beverly, or 6 miles east of Lincoln, moving southeast at 20 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, 60 mph wind gusts and half dollar size hail are forecast.

Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include Lincoln, Beverly, Glendale, and Westfall. This includes Interstate 70 between mile markers 229 and 249.

St. John's Missionary Baptist Church's 143rd anniversary this weekend will include a parade, a mortgage burning ceremony, church picnic, music, and church service.

The festivities will begin with a parade from 9-10 a.m. Saturday. According to information on the church's website, the parade is scheduled to begin in the 300 block of N. Ninth Street at the location of the former church site just north of Dairy Queen. Parade participants will then travel to the current church location at 215 S. Chicago Street. Participants are asked to assemble at 8 a.m.

"You can ride your bike, scooter, unicycle, ride in a car, walk, jog, run, or hop! We will be singing songs of praise, celebrating the goodness of God for bringing us this far by faith. There will also be a float and motorcycles traveling with us!" the church noted on its website.

The parade is scheduled to be followed by a mortgage burning ceremony from 10:30-11:30 a.m. to celebrate the church's paying off its mortgage. The church was forced to take out a mortgage to construct a new building at the S. Chicago Street site after a fire destroyed the N. Ninth Street church building on Nov. 26, 1999. The church paid off the loan in July, 22 years after it received the mortgage.

A church picnic will follow at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to information from the church, a Church Anniversary Musical is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, the church's Anniversary Service is scheduled for 10-11:45 a.m.

SALINE COUNTY — The trailer of a northbound semi collapsed and buckled in half on Interstate 135 in Saline County on Friday morning.

A social media report from&nbsp;<a href="https://kansashighwaypatrol.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Highway Patrol&nbsp;</a>Trooper Ben Gardner said authorities worked the unique incident just south of Interstate 70.

According to officials on the scene, the trailer of a northbound semi-truck collapsed and buckled in half.

According to Gardner, there were no traffic delays. The semi truck continued into a closed portion of a construction zone. There were no injuries reported.

Gardner also urged drivers to slow down for first responders assisting and working to clear the scene.

Semi-trailer buckles along I-135 in Saline County

Sometime between Aug. 8 and Sunday, unknown suspect(s) entered a property in the 3000 block of N. Lightville Road and stole a pontoon boat from the property.

The 2000 Fisher pontoon boat - model 200 Freedom DLX Fish boat -&nbsp;is green and white with a green collapsible canopy and has composite flooring. The boat was stored on a black single axle trailer which was also stolen. The boat has Oklahoma registration stickers on both sides of the bow.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $12,000.

Voters cast 431,000 Republican ballots in contest with gap of less than 500

TOPEKA — State Sen. Caryn Tyson conceded the Republican Party’s nomination for state treasurer amid a recount she sought in six counties that barely nudged the needle in an extremely close primary.

Tyson, a GOP senator from Parker in eastern Kansas, sent a message Thursday to supporters of her campaign who provided donations, walked door-to-door, put up yard signs and prayed on her behalf. She lost by less than 500 votes out of 431,000 cast statewide.

“While our campaign is over,” she said, “I will continue to work to protect our freedoms and to make Kansas a shining state in the nation. Over the course of the campaign, I have been blessed to meet and get to know so many amazing Kansans.”

Unofficial returns from the Aug. 2 primary and additional ballots processed by counties during the canvassing showed state Rep. Steven Johnson, of Assaria in central Kansas, with a lead of 475 votes.

Tyson sought a recount in Barton, Cloud, Dickinson, Harvey, McPherson and Ottawa counties. The secretary of state’s office said the recount in four of those counties shaved five votes from Johnson’s lead. The recount in McPherson and Cloud counties remained unofficial, but Johnson’s campaign said results in those two counties wouldn’t flip outcome of the primary.

Johnson has turned his attention to the November contest against Treasurer Lynn Rogers, a Democrat appointed to the position by Gov. Laura Kelly following resignation of Republican Jake LaTurner, who now serves in the U.S. House.

“We didn’t lose any ground while we waited for all the legally cast ballots to be counted,”&nbsp;Johnson&nbsp;said. “Our team hit the ground running knowing this process could take weeks to complete.”

Johnson raised about $100,000 in days following the primary election, and his campaign manager urged Republicans to unify behind GOP nominee.

“I want to thank my opponent for her willingness to run and for her continued service to this great state,”&nbsp;Johnson&nbsp;said. “I also want to thank my many volunteers and supporters who have been critical in winning a close race where every voter contact mattered. With our base of support we are well-positioned to win the general election.”

Recount: Johnson narrowly defeats Tyson in GOP treasurer’s race

Faculty, support staff and administration of&nbsp;<a href="https://salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;recently took part in a volunteering campaign at different Salina organizations with the goal of improving the community.

The annual Fall Kickoff is the campus's unofficial start of the new school year before students return. At the Monday event, employees for the university split up into teams and completed several spruce-up projects at Salina-community organizations. "The K-State Salina campus has always focused on involvement within the Salina community," said K-State Salina CEO and Dean Alysia Starkey. "As we continue to grow in our campus's recent rebranding into the Aerospace and Technology campus, we want to take an even bigger role in our home community. Salina is a wonderful home to our campus with more than 50 years of support. Our goal is to go above and beyond all that Salina has given to our campus and support the community that assists us in so many ways." As part of the effort, volunteers visited nine different Salina organizations. Their work included painting and cleaning at Ashby House, playing board games with residents at Eaglecrest Retirement Community, creating and packing homework packets for pre-school age students Heartland Early Education, baking and cleaning at Rebecca A. Morrison House, assisting at the Salina Animal Shelter and the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, pulling weeds and filling edges of cart paths at Salina Municipal Golf Course, organizing and cleaning the Salina Rescue Mission and moving items into a warehouse for Salina Shares. K-State Salina students, faculty and staff will continue emphasizing volunteering and community involvement as a part of the 2022-2023 school year. After returning to campus for the fall semester, some K-State Salina students will assist Rolling Hills Zoo with a service project. Service to the Salina region will take many forms over the coming school year to provide faculty, staff and students to engage with their passion points and meet the needs of the area.&nbsp;

NWS: Chance for rain Friday afternoon, evening

The Saline County Sheriff's Office, Salina Police Department, and the Kansas Highway Patrol are joining law enforcement agencies across the state  to help decrease the number of impaired motorists on the state’s roadways.

The You Drink. You Drive. You Lose campaign begins Saturday and runs through Sept. 5.

According to Sheriff Roger Soldan, if you are driving impaired, you are not only more likely to crash, but that crash is much more likely to cause serious injury or death.

“Alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination, which is a dangerous combination when you get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle,” said Colonel Herman T. Jones, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “As you celebrate the upcoming Labor Day weekend, we urge everyone to play it safe and have a sober driver or use a rideshare service if you will be drinking. If you are traveling and suspect another motorist may be impaired, please dial 911.”

If you’re traveling for the Labor Day holiday, the Patrol offers the following tips:

• Always wear your seatbelt every trip, every time. It’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

• Check your vehicle’s condition, including tires, fluid levels and mechanical equipment.

• Check road conditions at www.kandrive.org to look for construction or delays on your route.

• Allow plenty of time to arrive at your destination.

• Buckle up and make sure your children are in the appropriately fitted child safety seats.

• Have an emergency kit in your vehicle with essentials such as water, flashlights, chargers, blankets and nonperishable food.

• Always have a sober driver before you drink alcohol away from home or take a sober ride to and from the

location if you will be consuming alcohol. Remember, this is your decision.

You Drive. You Lose campaign begins Saturday and runs through Sept. 5.According to Sheriff Roger Soldan, if you are driving impaired, you are not only more likely to crash, but that crash is much more likely to cause serious injury or death.“Alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination, which is a dangerous combination when you get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle,” said Colonel Herman T. Jones, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “As you celebrate the upcoming Labor Day weekend, we urge everyone to play it safe and have a sober driver or use a rideshare service if you will be drinking. If you are traveling and suspect another motorist may be impaired, please dial 911.”If you’re traveling for the Labor Day holiday, the Patrol offers the following tips:• Always wear your seatbelt every trip, every time. Campaign to decrease number of impaired drivers begins Saturday

How do you know if a will or a trust is best for you?

This is a great question, especially since August is National Make-a-Will Month. The first thing you should do is take a serious look at your needs, your wishes and your overall life and financial circumstances.

If you’re like the average person with a couple of kids, a home and some savings, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/will-questions-answered" target="_blank">will</a>&nbsp;is all you need. There’s no reason to bring lawyers into the mix, unless there’s something complicated about your situation. In cases like this, you can even set one up online that’s perfectly legal in just a few minutes.&nbsp;

If you’re older, your kids are grown and your estate is worth $1 million or more, a trust is the way to go. By doing this, you can avoid probate in a way that wills don’t allow. Now, if you have a large estate&nbsp;and&nbsp;dependents, having both a will and a trust is a good idea. And you don’t have to worry about the two bumping into each other. They’re separate legal instruments, and there’s generally no conflict between them. If there is a legitimate, legal conflict between them, the trust usually overrides the will.

Simply put, everyone needs a will. But not everyone needs a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/revocable-vs-irrevocable-trust" target="_blank">trust</a>. Kansas Wesleyan University will offer a Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) preparation course this October to help prepare local college sophomores for the TEAS exam. 

The course will take place on October 10–11, and will be held from 8:30 a.m–4:30 p.m. both days.

The TEAS exam is designed to test future nursing students in four content areas: reading, math, science and English and language usage. Many nursing schools require this test to be taken prior to admission into their programs.

Students who wish to take the course can register on KWU’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwucoyotes.com/tickets" target="_blank">ticketing website.</a>&nbsp;The course fee is $100 and includes the cost of a study guide. Registration for the course closes on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.
