Local, area students earn degrees at Graceland University

The Salina Public Library kicked off its Salina Reads program with a variety of events on Saturday.

Additionally, the Friends of the Salina Public Library organization had a used book sale in conjunction with the Salina Reads kickoff. Books, audiobooks, movies, television series DVDs, posters, and music CDs were for sale. All funds raised will go toward support of Salina Public Library programs.

Other activities during the Salina Reads kickoff included the following.

●Come-and-go activities for all ages throughout the library

●A community art project in the north lobby in conjunction with the Salina Art Center

●A mad science program for youth: Walking on the Moon

●A mad science program for youth: Living in Space

●A mad science program for youth: Space Phenomenon

TOPEKA – Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt recently announced that the Kansas Insurance Department recovered $69,730.88 for Saline County residents in 2022. 

Last year, a total of $7.6 million was recovered for policyholders statewide, the largest single-year recovery in Kansas history. The Department has recovered over $26 million for Kansans since Schmidt first took office in 2019.

“When Kansans call the Insurance Department, we work diligently to help make sure they receive the benefits they are entitled to under their insurance policy,” said Schmidt. “The insurance claims process can be complicated for many – if you are having an issue, I want to hear from you.”

Smoky Hills PBA annual meeting set for Jan. 31

In 1980, I conducted a survey of U.S. entomology departments. This was before the Internet so I surveyed our 41 university entomology departments by mail. They all provided the requested details of their programs: masters and doctoral degrees awarded, number of faculty, and where faculty came from.

Today, by using the Internet, it was easy to again check on our remaining&nbsp; university entomology departments. The story is alarming: the U.S. has only 22 of the 41 departments remaining as specific entomology departments. Eight have reduced their entomology faculty by merging with closely-related departments. Eleven dramatically shrunk to very few entomologists, therefore offering no entomology courses or up to a 15-hour undergrad minor. In my 1980 survey, only the five smallest departments in 1980 had under ten faculty (9, 8, 6, 6, 5). Today, the smallest departments only have two or three entomology faculty and they no longer offer their PhD and even MS degrees.

This abandonment of entomology has occurred in some of the more prestigious universities including U.C.–Berkeley and the University of Kansas. And this decline has been underway for four decades.

As a Fellow of the Indiana Academy of Sciences, I often attend their annual meetings despite living three states away. During one meeting at Indiana University, I was walking down a science hall when I noticed some bones and a tag hanging down from the top of a hall cabinet—it was from a dodo bird, now extinct. It should have been safely secured in a collection. But there no longer was a curated collection.

One very great I.U. entomologist was Alfred Kinsey. Although he made his name in another field, he was an expert on gall wasps. He had a major collection and five million specimens were donated to the American Museum of Natural History. When Kinsey died, another entomologist continued the coursework. But before he retired, he was instructed to disperse the remaining entomology collection—there would be no more entomology at I.U. Indeed, they had likewise encouraged a very famous and tenured botanist to take a better offer elsewhere, and take the university collection with him. My botany colleagues tell me that the decline in botany departments nationwide is even more severe.

What is the reason for U.S. universities consolidating their sciences and eliminating certain fields of study? Federal and corporate funding was shifting to molecular biology, the study of DNA and the&nbsp; chemical reactions in plants, animals and microbes. As a result, U.S. research in zoology and botany has substantially declined. Some important collections of specimens, often going back centuries and revealing the extinction of species or shifts in ranges, have been orphaned. The majority of cutting edge research papers in these fields are now authored by entomologists and botanists in Europe and Asia.

Today, there are many U.S. “biology” departments where no one can identify anything green or furry! This shift away from plants and animals to just molecular biology has resulted in isolated specialization. This in turn has resulted in faulty science.

In early research into the possible transfer animal for SARS-CoV-2, an article was published in the&nbsp;Journal of Medical Virology&nbsp;in January 22, 2020 using “similar codon usage” to argue the virus passed from bats to humans through a snake! Another article published inMolecular Biology and Evolution&nbsp;used a genome deficiency to indicate that dogs were the intermediate host! Both journals supposedly have peer review. But peer review by molecular biologists who don’t know anything about snakes or dogs did not catch this wrong research. This second report especially caused unnecessary alarm among dog owners.

Another much more comprehensive and valid study was published in July 2020 in&nbsp;Science&nbsp;that addressed the ability of various mammals to harbor this virus. Finally, this was good science. The 21 authors included both molecular biologists and zoologists.

Today we hear charges that other countries are stealing our science. But this is wrong. For decades we have been cutting back in entomology, botany, particle physics, and many other fields. Other countries have now become clear leaders. They did not close their zoology and botany departments. They did not abandon their collections with centuries of valuable specimens and data.

A country that decimates 46% of its university departments in certain fields, will not remain a leader in those fields.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1865, Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman decreed that 400,000 acres of land in the South would be divided into 40-acre lots and given to former slaves. (The order, later revoked by President Andrew Johnson, is believed to have inspired the expression, "Forty acres and a mule.")

In 1912, a day before reaching the South Pole, British explorer Robert Scott and his expedition found evidence that Roald Amundsen of Norway and his team had gotten there ahead of them.

In 1919, pianist and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski became the first premier of the newly created Republic of Poland.

LINDSBORG - The Bethany College Office of Advancement and Alumni has announced that Emily Barletta has stepped into the role of director of alumni engagement. 

Previously serving as the Coordinator of Donor Relations, Barletta began her new role on Jan. 6, 2023. 

Barletta, a Salina native, comes to us from the Kansas City area. While working in the Sjogren Center, she is finishing her final hours toward her bachelor's degree in Sports Management at Bethany College, having transferred from Washburn University.

“I’m incredibly excited for this new journey and role at Bethany. I’ve seen the impact our alumni have on our campus and the community. I look forward to the opportunity to bridge the gap between graduates, current, and future Swedes,” said Barletta.

OLATHE - MidAmerica Nazarene University recently announced its President's, Dean's List and Honor Roll for the fall 2022 semester. A total of 423 students qualified for one of the honors. All students in traditional programs carrying 12 semester hours or more with a term GPA from 3.2 to 4.0 may qualify for one of these academic honors. Salina Regional Health Center has been re-verified as a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. Trauma centers verified by the ACS must undergo a lengthy review every three years to insure standards for optimal care of injured patients are being met.

The ACS verification program looks at all aspects of trauma care from the prehospital phase to the rehabilitation process. Verified trauma centers also must remain focused on performance improvement to confirm processes in place lead to the best possible patient outcomes.

Salina Regional was first verified as a Level III Trauma Center in 2012. This is the fourth time the hospital has been verified by the ACS.

Since the Trauma Program was implemented at Salina Regional, a team of individuals with highly defined roles are on standby around the clock—ready to descend upon the emergency department whenever a trauma alert is received. Team members include a trauma surgeon, emergency department physician, trauma nurse, intensive care nurse, surgical nurse and staff from pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, blood bank, respiratory care, security and chaplaincy.

“Salina Regional’s commitment to maintain ACS Level III Trauma Center status is a measure of our dedication to care for injured patients not only in Saline County, but for all of north central Kansas,” said Rachelle Giroux, Critical Diagnoses Director at Salina Regional. “It’s also part of our commitment to being involved with the Kansas Trauma System. We work with varying levels of acute care facilities and area EMS to provide quality care to patients who are injured.”

Partly this is because it’s not entirely accurate. The state’s population of 2.9 million is concentrated in the cities and suburbs of the Topeka-Lawrence-Kansas&nbsp;City nexus, with nearly 1.2 million Kansans spread across only five counties. Add to that the city of Wichita’s nearly 400K residents, and you have over half the population of the entire state accounted for. Meanwhile the 2020 census shows that 80 of&nbsp;Kansas’s 105 countries, nearly all of them rural, are losing population. Despite the images, stories, and songs invoked by our farms, pastures, and rural highways, the great majority of Kansans today are urbanites, and that likely won’t change.

This reality mostly isn’t reflected in our legislature, of course. Though&nbsp;Kansas’s urban areas have become more Democratic in their voting habits—three Johnson County state house seats held by Republicans flipped last November—the state’s long-standing district-based election patterns have long helped Republicans maintain dominance in most areas lacking in population density or demographic diversity, which describes those dozens of shrinking counties quite well. So even as&nbsp;Kansas’s population moves to the cities—and those city votes definitely add up when counted state-wide; remember Governor Kelly came out ahead in only 8 counties, but still won—its representative bodies remain heavily tilted towards mostly rural Republican voices.

One might assume that would mean rural concerns are the Republicans’ major focus. But that’s the other part of the reason: the&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;GOP’s support for rural interests, despite the huge support they receive from those small and distant communities, is mixed at best.

There is some support there, to be sure. But addressing the problems of long-term population and economic decline are difficult, while following the culture war agenda of the national Republican party and its donors, and filing the bills which their interest groups write, is easy.

Leave aside the benefits Medicaid expansion would bring to rural&nbsp;Kansas; that the Republican leadership refuses to move forward with something supported by 70% of Kansans is by now an old story. Consider instead other issues: a water crisis driving ever more of the already shrinking number of farmers to sell out to bigger corporate actors; a housing crisis making it difficult for those trying to start a business or get by on a fixed income to stay in their hometowns; a lack of broad-band access, child-care resources, or support for school maintenance; and more.

These are complicated problems, requiring patient investment and difficult compromises. The decade-plus of effort the legislature has put into establishing “local enhanced management areas” in western&nbsp;Kansas, supporting farmers in cutting back on irrigation, is a good example, one that has shown some real success in protecting the High Plains Aquifer. By contrast, there are those who present, say, ideologically charged promises of school choice—which is irrelevant to a farm town just trying to save its high school—or legislation designed to lure financial interests to rural&nbsp;Kansas—which shows more hope in fees from global high-rollers than in the state budget--as their preferred solutions, rather than taking on this complicated, usually unsexy work.

So long as the minority of rural voters in&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;can dominate the legislature, they should at least expect their concerns to be addressed seriously. This year, hopefully rural Republicans will see less of their representatives’ time consumed less by imagined threats like the occasional transgender athlete or non-existent Marxist schoolbooks, and more by the hard task of helping their patient rural supporters out.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about road sign damage

As manufacturing becomes more automated, the need for employees skilled at setting up and maintaining that machinery also grows.

Salina TechAs manufacturing becomes more automated, the need for employees skilled at setting up and maintaining that machinery also grows.To help meet that developing need, Salina Are Technical College is planning on launching an Industrial Maintenance and Automation program, and has secured a $1.8 million grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to fund roughly half the cost of a new 15,000 square-foot building to house the program.Salina Tech President Greg Nichols said the grant requires the college raise an equal amount in matching funds, and progress on that is already showing results, most notably a donation of $200,000 from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation will get us on our way toward funding the project. The Foundation has been instrumental in supporting the college through various avenues and this donation was part of their commitment to bolstering technical education in their service area.The terms of the state grant allow donations of equipment to count towards the match, Nichols said, and several companies across the region are planning such donations, but no dollar value has been put on those items yet. In addition, Saline County has pledged $90,000 to the project.“That still leaves us with a substantial amount of funds to raise,” Nichols said. “Now that we know we have the state funding, we’re starting to call on potential donors, especially local companies that will benefit from having employees with the skills this Industrial Maintenance and Automation program will teach.”As an additional incentive, Nichols said, donations to the building fund are eligible for a 60 percent tax credit on Kansas income taxes, in addition to being deductible; under the right circumstances, a donation could offset a larger portion of a contributors tax bill.Nichols said the college’s Board of Trustees will be asked to make some decisions at its January 23 meeting, such as whether to use a design-build process or hire an architect.
