Safety advocates offer tips to protect your children this Halloween

TOPEKA –&nbsp;On Halloween, ghosts and ghouls may make your blood run cold but real dangers, like pedestrian accidents, falls, burns and poisonings are a scary reality. Safe Kids Kansas, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Kansas Highway Patrol remind families to make safety part of your fall festivity planning.

On average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Drivers need to slow down and be extra alert, especially in neighborhoods, as there will be more children on the streets and sidewalks – and those kids may be focused on gathering candy and the excitement of the holiday rather than being careful while crossing streets.

Review safety rules with your kids before they leave the house. Trick-or-treaters are often out when it’s dark and more difficult for drivers to see them. Children younger than age 12 should not be crossing streets alone on Halloween without an adult or responsible teenager.

“While it’s a good idea for children to have a cell phone with them in case of an emergency, remind them to pay attention to their surroundings,” said Cherie Sage with Safe Kids Kansas. “Don’t be distracted from hazards because you are texting or talking on the phone.”

Parents and kids should also be careful with candy. It’s hard to resist the temptation to dive right into treats, but it is best to check sweets before children are allowed to eat them. Only eat treats in original and unopened wrappers.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half of home structure fires happened because decorations were too close to a heat source. Most of these incidents were started by candles. Play it safe and use battery powered candles or lights.

“Halloween monsters may give you a fright, but fire is something truly scary. Make sure your family has working smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside and outside every sleeping room,” said Doug Jorgensen, State Fire Marshal. “Along with a home fire escape plan, they are both essential in saving lives.”

With Halloween just a week away, follow these tips to ensure your trick-or-treaters have a fun and safe holiday.

●Choose costumes and decorations that are flame-resistant or flame-retardant.

●Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

●Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.

●Have kids carry glow sticks and flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

●When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

●Keep flammable materials such as hay bales, corn stalks and paper decorations away from heat and flame sources, like candles, light bulbs and heaters.

●Keep exits clear of decorations and props so nothing blocks escape routes and have working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan.

●Use battery-operated candles in jack-o-lanterns and when decorating pathways and yards.

●Set a reminder to blow out any candles and unplug lights at the end of the evening.

●Talk to your teens who may be attending parties and haunted houses to look for the exits and have a way out in case of an emergency.

●Always walk on sidewalks or paths. Don’t walk through neighbors’ yards, as there may be a hazard you can’t see.

●If there are no sidewalks along your street, walk on the road facing traffic as far to left as possible.

●Always stop and look before you cross the street, and cross at corners using signals and crosswalks whenever possible.

●Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

●Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.

●Make eye contact and wave to drivers before crossing in front of them.

Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit, stick to a pre-planned route and trick-or-treat in groups.

●Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

●Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

●Watch out for pedestrians when turning at intersections. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.

●Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

Keep your trick-or-treaters safe from scary injuries

A Salina man was arrested on multiple requested drug charges after an incident late Tuesday afternoon in central Salina.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 700 block of S. Second Street at approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday for the report of a domestic dispute.

A woman and her boyfriend, identified as Jayden Smith, 21, of Salina, were arguing, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Smith allegedly broke a mirror off of the woman's 2016 Ford Fiesta. 

The woman called her mother, who went to the residence and ordered Smith to leave. Smith also was told to get rid of the illegal drugs he allegedly had in the residence. Instead, he allegedly discarded them on the floor outside the bedroom, Forrester said.

Those items were turned over to police and included the following, according to Forrester.

Additionally, Smith allegedly broke a candle and put a hole in a door, Forrester said. Damage to the mirror, candle, and door was estimated at $300.

Smith was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck Tuesday evening in south Salina.

Joseph Embers, 44, of Topeka, was eastbound on W. Water Well Road in a 2014 Ford C-Max when he failed to yield at the S. Ninth Street stop sign and collided with a southbound 1991 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Robbie Watson, 57, of Bridgeport, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. An 18-year-old female passenger in the pickup was not injured.

The C-Max sustained extensive driver-side damage and the pickup sustained extensive front-end damage. Both vehicles were removed by wrecker.

Forrester said Embers was cited for failure to yield.

Drivers injured, one cited in two-vehicle wreck in south Salina

Another skimmer has been found on a gas pump in north Salina.

On Monday, shortly before an alarm went off on a pump at Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, something similar happened at Pilot Travel Center, 1944 N. Ninth Street.

Employees at Pilot reported to police on Tuesday morning that at 11:20 p.m. Monday, an alarm on one of Pilot's pumps went off. That was approximately 10 minutes before a pump alarm went off at Flying J.

Forrester said that when the alarm activated at Pilot, employees saw a male subject walking from the pump and leaving in a gray tractor pulling a while trailer with a blue stripe down the side. When they went out to the pump, they found the same style skimmer as the two found at Flying J.

Just under $1,000 worth of damage was done to the pump, Forrester said.

Each participating scholar will receive an annual scholarship of up to $9,900, covering 85% or more of the in-state tuition rate. With year-round course options, freshmen students can earn their degree in three years while working up to 20 hours per week at Great Plains Manufacturing. They also obtain on-the-job training, which may count toward some academic credits. This scholarship will allow students to gain more than 2,400 hours of relevant professional experience. K-State Salina, Great Plains Mfg. to host event for Salina area HS students

By GREG DOERING Kansas Farm Bureau I recently had to fire up the furnace for the first time this season. As painful as it was to switch the thermostat from the off position to heat, Mother Nature forced my hand with a hard freeze about two weeks early. In my mind there’s nothing better than waking up in a chilly house. On the flip side, there’s nothing worse than being awoken by a freezing house. The acorns falling on my roof for the past few weeks were one of the first signals this day was coming. Despite the drought, the oak tree north of my house has had a productive year. We’ve endured what can best be described as an intermittent hailstorm since late August. The seeds land with a thud before rolling into the gutter. Some of the larger acorns get a significant enough bounce off the hipped roof to make it to the patio, which adds an extra bit of excitement to each step once the little ovals are covered by leaves. The leaves and acorns will require some extra work over the coming weeks to remove. Like switching on the heat, raking leaves, disconnecting hoses and cleaning gutters are just some of the season’s many routines. In a couple of weeks my wife and I will participate in what’s become another fall tradition, voting early. Like any good idiosyncratic custom, this habit developed accidentally rather than on purpose. We’ll go out to breakfast on the Saturday before Election Day. On our way home we’ll stop by the county annex building to cast our ballots. I don’t remember exactly how this particular routine got started, but it ranks high on the list for why fall is my favorite season. Even if I’m not fully satisfied with the slate of candidates, I get to talk over the choices with my wife at our favorite breakfast place. Of course, voting early does involve a little risk. There’s always the chance of late-breaking news happening in the hours between Saturday morning and Tuesday evening that would change my vote in a particular race. I think the odds of that happening are up there with delaying my vote, getting busy on the second Tuesday of November and not voting, only to see a race end in a tie all because I didn’t cast my ballot. Both are plausible if highly unlikely scenarios. After voting, we’ll likely spend the rest of the day working outside, picking up acorns that have bounced off the roof and raking leaves into giant piles. The hard work comes later, when you have to ensure winning candidates stick to their campaign promises if you voted for them. Tougher still is convincing someone you didn’t vote for to reconsider their position. That work will come in a different season. Whether you’re starting a tradition or sticking to an old routine, fall is voting season. I encourage you to make the most of it and cast your ballot anytime between now and Nov. 8.

As painful as it was to switch the thermostat from the off position to heat, Mother Nature forced my hand with a hard freeze about two weeks early. In my mind there’s nothing better than waking up in a chilly house. On the flip side, there’s nothing worse than being awoken by a freezing house. The acorns falling on my roof for the past few weeks were one of the first signals this day was coming. Despite the drought, the oak tree north of my house has had a productive year. We’ve endured what can best be described as an intermittent hailstorm since late August. The seeds land with a thud before rolling into the gutter. Some of the larger acorns get a significant enough bounce off the hipped roof to make it to the patio, which adds an extra bit of excitement to each step once the little ovals are covered by leaves. The leaves and acorns will require some extra work over the coming weeks to remove. Like switching on the heat, raking leaves, disconnecting hoses and cleaning gutters are just some of the season’s many routines. In a couple of weeks my wife and I will participate in what’s become another fall tradition, voting early. Like any good idiosyncratic custom, this habit developed accidentally rather than on purpose. We’ll go out to breakfast on the Saturday before Election Day. On our way home we’ll stop by the county annex building to cast our ballots. I don’t remember exactly how this particular routine got started, but it ranks high on the list for why fall is my favorite season. Even if I’m not fully satisfied with the slate of candidates, I get to talk over the choices with my wife at our favorite breakfast place. Of course, voting early does involve a little risk. There’s always the chance of late-breaking news happening in the hours between Saturday morning and Tuesday evening that would change my vote in a particular race. I think the odds of that happening are up there with delaying my vote, getting busy on the second Tuesday of November and not voting, only to see a race end in a tie all because I didn’t cast my ballot. Both are plausible if highly unlikely scenarios. After voting, we’ll likely spend the rest of the day working outside, picking up acorns that have bounced off the roof and raking leaves into giant piles. INSIGHT: Routines of fall

Salina Regional Health Center has received recertification as a Primary Stroke Center from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). The certification comes as validation of the hospital’s efforts to enhance stroke care for the region following a thorough verification process.

Salina Regional first became certified as a Primary Stroke Center in 2017 after developing a dedicated stroke response team that stands ready 24/7 to respond to cases whenever a stroke is suspected. Emergency responders can activate the team and have it ready to receive patients the moment they arrive at the hospital.

Members of the team include emergency room physicians, nurses, radiology staff, pharmacists and lab personnel who all have specialized training to provide stroke care. A significant portion of Primary Stroke Center certification revolves on creating a culture of performance improvement. All stroke response efforts are closely tracked, analyzed and reviewed to verify its processes meet and exceed national performance standards.

“This achievement takes a buy-in from people all throughout our health care delivery system,” said Christy Dixson, Stroke Program coordinator at Salina Regional. “Our efforts are aimed at providing stroke patients with the latest advancements in care that have been clinically proven to improve patient outcomes.”

Public recognition of symptoms for stroke is also critical to improved outcomes. The acronym FAST is often used to help identify symptoms and enhance response for stroke victims. Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties and Time to call emergency services are important symptoms to recognize and action to take for stroke.

NWS: 24-hour rainfall totals for Kansas

Longtime Kansas City Royals broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre is scheduled to address questions surrounding mental health, including his own journey with depression, during a speech at Kansas Wesleyan University on Nov. 1.

Lefebvre's presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in Sams Chapel and is open to the public at no charge.

In 2008, Lefebvre co-authored a book about his own struggles with depression, titled The Shame of Me: One Man’s Journey to Depression and Back.

Lefebvre is in his 24th season with the Royals, 28th overall in the big leagues, and is a two-time Mid-America Emmy award winner. 

He is active in many Kansas City community activities, including Gloves for Kids, which has raised money for youth programs in Kansas and Missouri for more than 20 years. 

Among a litany of community-related honors, he was the 2006 Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City Role Model of the Year, the 2011 recipient of the John J. “Buck” O’Neil MVP Award for his commitment to youth in Kansas City, and the 2015 recipient of the Olathe NAACP Diversity in Sports award.

The Outreach Team from Salina Family Healthcare is scheduled to have a flu vaccination clinic from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday in the Prescott Room of the Salina Public Library, 301 W. Elm Street. They also plan to have COVID-19 booster vaccines at the clinic.

Those wanting to receive flu vaccinations are asked to bring their insurance cards. For those who do not have insurance or the Salina Family Healtcare Center discount card, a payment of $65 for the flu shot is due at the time of vaccination. Currently, the COVID-19 boosters are given at no charge.

Two skimmers have been located on pumps at a north Salina travel center.

Officers were first sent to Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, on Friday for the report of a skimmer on a pump, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported Tuesday. Flying J had received an alarm on a pump, which also shut off the pump. 

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on Friday, a white male with gray hair and a gray goatee, and wearing a black t-shirt went into Flying J and asked for the pump to be turned on. An employee told him that maintenance was looking at the pump to make sure no skimmers had been put on the pump, Forrester said. The man left without purchasing any fuel.

Maintenance did find a skimmer on that pump.

On Monday night, officers returned to Flying J for the report of another skimmer possibly being placed on another pump. An employee told officers, that an alarm from the pump went off at approximately 11:30 p.m. Monday, Forrester said.

A gray tractor-trailor rig was at the pumps. When the employee went out to check the pump that had an alarm sounding, a Hispanic male hurried away and got into the tractor-trailer rig and left, despite requests from the employee to stop, Forrester said. When the pump was opened, officers located a skimmer inside.

Forrester said it is believed that there were no victims from the two skimmer attempts.

Social-emotional learning focus of November SPS Chat

A 44-year-old driver from Raytown, Mo., was injured in a single-vehicle wreck early this morning on Interstate 70 west of Salina.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander reported Tuesday that the man was driving a 1998 Peterbilt with an empty 53-foot box trailer eastbound on I-70 when the tractor-trailer rig crossed into the median, then the westbound lanes, and struck a turnaround in the median. The tractor-trailer rig then went into the north ditch, striking a concrete culvert.

The wreck occurred at approximately 4:07 a.m. Tuesday on I-70 near mile marker 248.

The driver had non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. A 25-year-old male passenger had cuts to his face, but refused treatment.

The Peterbilt sustained heavy front-end damage, undercarriage damage, and a broken axle, Melander noted. The trailer sustained heavy damage and was leaning to the side, he added.

It appeared that the driver had fallen asleep, Melander reported. The driver was cited for no proof of insurance.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced that more than $22 million will help groups including law enforcement organizations and sexual assault crisis centers that support crime victims and survivors. The funding is provided by the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Victim Assistance grant program.&nbsp;

“Survivors of crime deserve the resources and support they need to overcome trauma, achieve stability and independence, and see justice served,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“This funding goes directly to organizations across the state working to accomplish that mission.”&nbsp;

VOCA grants support the emotional, psychological, and physical needs of crime victims and survivors through direct services such as court advocacy and criminal justice support, provided by law enforcement agencies and prosecutors’ offices; crisis counseling, provided by rape crisis centers and mental health centers; forensic interviews, provided by children’s advocacy centers; and shelter, transportation, and transitional housing, provided by domestic violence programs.&nbsp;

A total of $22,045,285 was awarded to 65 agencies, including several in our area.

Hackers know a secret many of us share: we reuse passwords. Don’t. That’s one takeaway from the FTC’s case against online alcohol delivery platform Drizly. Here’s what to do after a data breach and why.

In its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/10/ftc-takes-action-against-drizly-its-ceo-james-cory-rellas-security-failures-exposed-data-25-million">lawsuit against Drizly</a>, the FTC alleges that lax security practices made it easy for a hacker to get into Drizly’s database by re-using an executive’s seven-character password that had been made public in an unrelated data breach. The hacked database had personal information from 2.5 million Drizly users, including email, geolocation information, not-so-securely encrypted passwords, and other sensitive demographic data.

You may be tempted to ignore a data breach notice if it’s about an old account that you don’t use anymore&nbsp;—&nbsp;like one involving your dorky username and password from an old gaming account. But hackers know there’s a good chance you’ve re-used that same password elsewhere&nbsp;—&nbsp;like your bank account. If so, you might have an identity theft problem on your hands.&nbsp;
