Fireworks tossed off to the side of the road are thought to have sparked a wind-whipped fire that burned approximately 300 acres east of Salina Thursday evening.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that multiple 911 calls just before 7:45 p.m. Thursday indicated that a grass fire near the intersection of S. Simpson Road and E. Magnolia Road was rapidly growing in intensity. The fire quickly spread to the north on the east side of S. Simpson Road.

According to National Weather Service data from the Salina Regional Airport, wind gusts were in the 30 mph range at that time. Additionally, the weather service had earlier warned of fire danger due to the winds and dry conditions.

Firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 5 initially responded to the blaze, however, they quickly called for assistance, and firefighters from districts 1, 2, and 7 also responded. Additionally, the Kansas Highway Patrol provided traffic control.

The fire was called under control at 9 p.m., however, firefighters remained in the area for several more hours.

While an estimated 300 acres of grass, wood, and brush burned between E. Magnolia Road and E. Cloud Street, there have been no reports of livestock killed or structures damaged, Hughes said. As of this morning, four property owners were known to have had land burned in the blaze.

According to Hughes, the fire was so large that personnel from Salina Regional Airport could see on radar the pattern of the fire burning.

Hughes said that while emergency personnel were being sent to battle the blaze, the dispatch center also took a call from a person who reported seeing someone toss fireworks from a car in the vicinity of the S. Simpson Road/E. Magnolia Road intersection.

Hughes said deputies went to that area and located the remains of a firework under some power lines. He described the debris as being from a large, canister-style firework. 

He said the location of the firework debris appeared to be where the fire originated.

"The responders that came out were incredible, and they put it out very quickly and protected our house immediately," said Melissa McCoy, Saline County public information officer, who lives close to where the fire burned.

It became clear early on that firefighters had the fire under control near McCoy's house, so her husband, Casey, and others went to the neighbors' house to make sure they were going to be okay, she said. Even so, firefighters stationed a unit near the McCoy home to make sure the fire didn't make its way back toward the property.

The McCoys had already evacuated their two sons to her sister's home.

"I was overwhelmed by the number of people who responded because a lot of those are volunteer firefighters, so they're at their normal jobs this morning, tired because they were protecting my property last night," McCoy said.

Firefighters were at her house until midnight, she said.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning in effect from 3-10 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

Strong northwest winds, sustained as high as 30 to 40 mph with peak gusts of at least 50 mph likely, and potentially damaging gusts around 60 mph possible.

Areas of blowing dust are likely within at least portions of the warning area, perhaps reducing visibility to less than 1 mile. The most intense winds will likely last 2 to 4 hours in most locations, immediately along and behind a powerful cold front. Potentially damaging winds will start and end within the Warning area at different times, and not occur for the entire duration of the warning.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.

Wind advisories have been issued for counties in our area on Friday.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a wind advisory in effect from 5 p.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

UPDATE: Red flag warnings, extreme fire danger for Friday

The December First Friday will include two art exhibits.

Subvert Studio, 116 E. Iron Avenue, is featuring the work of Matt Kline, Minneapolis, in an exhibit titled The Hello Show. The exhibit opening is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Friday in Subvert Studio.

Kline's paintings consist of vibrant child-like illustrations paired with witty short poems, according to information from Subvert Studio.

“There is something for everyone,” he said.

Kline completes a painting a day and has more than 240 pieces of art. Most are the size of a baseball card and are available for $10 each, Subvert studio noted in a news release.

During the opening reception, music will be provided by Salina DJ K-ODD.

About a block away, Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat, 148 S. Santa Fe Avenue, is hosting Mother Water, an art exhibition by Crystal Hammerschmidt.

"Come visit with Crystal and learn about her mixed media soft sculpture and printmaking," Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat noted in its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/447826064162872/?ref=newsfeed">Facebook event</a>.

The exhibit reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday.

And if the First Friday art events aren't enough for you, check out the Holiday Art Market at the Salina Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. Fourth Street, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

The event is open to the public at no charge.

Downtown Salina: First Friday art shows, Saturday Holiday Art Market

I use a debit card for all my regular, day-to-day purchases. However, I use a credit card for plane tickets, big ticket items, or when I shop online because someone told me it’s easier to dispute purchases when they’re made with a credit card. Are you putting your checking account at risk by using a debit card for these types of purchases?

I don’t know who this “someone” is, but they’re a lousy financial advisor. The firm of Someone, They Said, and I Heard? That’s a financial planning company you don’t want to work with.

A debit card has the exact same protections for fraud that a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/how-to-pay-off-credit-card-debt" target="_blank">credit card</a>&nbsp;has. It does come out of your checking account, but the bank has to put it back once you dispute the charge and prove your dispute. It may take a day or two, but they’ll get it done.

I’ve used a debit card for decades, and I haven’t owned a credit card since&nbsp;way&nbsp;back in my dumb-with-money days. I’ve never had any problems using a debit card, and I’m not going to make the mistake of playing around with debt ever again.

On Tuesday, Salina police officers took two reports of subjects passing counterfeit bills at Casey’s, 725 W. Schilling Road in Salina. 

Employees reported on Sunday, a female suspect paid for merchandise using a counterfeit $100 bill. The following day, a male suspect also attempted to pay using a counterfeit $100 bill. When employees began to question the bill’s validity, the suspect fled the store.

SALINE COUNTY —Two vehicles were involved in a rear-end crash just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Salina.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Acura MDX driven by Victor Manuel Devora, 40, of Salina, was westbound on W. Magnolia Road at S. Ninth Street.

The SUV rear-ended a westbound 2019 Nissan Versa driven by&nbsp; Ashley&nbsp;Franco, 29, Salina, who was yielding for oncoming traffic.

The KHP did not report Franco was transported for treatment despite a complaint of pain.&nbsp;There were two juveniles present in the Nissan. Devora was not wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to the KHP.

How to avoid holiday job scams

Abilene kicks off holiday season with Cowtown Christmas

Two people are sought in connection to a counterfeit bill case at a southwest Salina convenience store.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that on Sunday, a woman entered the Casey's General Store at 725 W. Schilling Road and purchased just under $9 worth of food items with a $100 bill. The clerk checked the bill with a counterfeit identification pen, but it didn't show as being counterfeit. Sunflower Bank later identified the bill as being counterfeit, Forrester said.

On Monday, a man entered the same Casey's and attempted to purchase a single item with a $100 bill. This time, the counterfeit identification pen did its job. When the clerk took the bill back to show the manager, the man fled, Forrester said.

Salina police looking for 2 who attempted to pass counterfeit $100 bills

At Monday's Salina City Commission work session, commissioners discussed the possibility of allowing additional bike&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;in city limits with James Teutsch , public works director for the City of Salina. The session provided commissioners with an in-depth look at biking trends in the city, education and outreach on current biking trails, and discussion on whether the community is in favor of allowing bike&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;

According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials, sharrows&nbsp;first appeared in the Denver, Colo., area in the 1990s. As the name implies, it is a combination of the words, "share" and "arrow."&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to a City of Salina bike sharing brochure,&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;are not classified as a bike lane.&nbsp;Sharrows&nbsp;do not create road space that is reserved for bicycles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Sharrows&nbsp;have a purpose. They are primarily used for low use roads and low speed roads, 35 miles an hour or less, that's generally where you should expect to find them," Teutsch said. "If there are those that are on routes, that that is not the case, then we would probably want to try to identify an alternative to that particular route."&nbsp;

Commissioner Karl Ryan mentioned that there is already a lack of public outreach and education pertaining to bicyclists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Do you think it'd be useful to indicate that you don't ride your bicycle on the sidewalk," Ryan asked. "I think the biggest thing you've mentioned in here to me is going to be outreach.&nbsp; If we're riding our bikes up on the sidewalk back on the street, back and forth, the 300 or so people that are active bike riders that I know and I can be [bicycling] part of the year when the&nbsp; weather's nice. They all know what the bike map is, and they follow those. But we've got an awful lot of people, for example, I saw guy, I would say a short time ago, riding with a baby carrier on the back of his bike. He knows that he was riding the wrong way on the wrong side of the street. So it's a public education piece to me I think expanding the plan is great, but I think we need to get off the sidewalks with the&nbsp;bikes as soon or as efficiently as possible."&nbsp;

&nbsp;Teutsch agreed with Ryan and reiterated that additional signs would be required to clarify where bicyclists should ride their bikes.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"One of the recommendations that I would make to you is wherever there are&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;there ought to be supplemented with signs that's in accordance with the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials," Teutsch said. "But when it comes to bicycles in particular what&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp; should do is tell bicyclists which direction they should be traveling.&nbsp; I've certainly seen it coming to work on Ash Street, I see a lot of young kids riding bicycles with no lights at night and riding in the opposite direction. So there's certainly a lot of public education that needs to take place."&nbsp;

The biggest issue members of the community voiced is the cost associated with the project.&nbsp;

"I know that I've heard members of the public have concerns about the cost. If I'm going to follow the city manager's guidance, then I have to pay attention to this as well,"&nbsp;Teutsch said. "Prices range somewhere between $100 to $400, with the average being about $230 for a&nbsp;sharrow.&nbsp;Sharrows&nbsp;represent a quarter to three quarters of 1 percent of my budget."&nbsp;

Several Salina citizens were&nbsp;present at the meeting to share their opinions on the proposed&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;Phil Black, a member of the Salina Bicycle Advocacy group spoke with caution about the use of&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;

"Even though a&nbsp;sharrow&nbsp;might be there on a road, I don't know that I want a six year old out there," Black said. "On the other hand, if you're a commuter like me, some of the sidewalks, as you pointed out, are not in very good condition. In fact, I'm moving into a house where we are having the sidewalk replaced, because if you hit one of those things, you'll break a wheel."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Black referenced Lindsborg and&nbsp;Manahattan&nbsp;as examples of cities that used proper signage to help mitigate bike traffic on sidewalks.&nbsp;

"In Manhattan and Lindsborg you'll see signs on the sidewalk painted to say please dismount, which seems to me to be more meaningful than just a little sign," Black said.&nbsp; "It says no bicycles on the street. It's a proactive thing, a positive and not a negative."&nbsp;

Black also said that he knows multiple veterans organizations that support&nbsp;bicycling&nbsp;as a way to get through challenging situations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I found a study that showed over 50 organizations supporting bicycles for veterans who are going through paths that are challenging, and if we can help a few seniors prevent them from having to get knee replacements and if we can help a few veterans find a better path. It seems to me it's worth the cost. "&nbsp;

Not everyone was in agreement on implementing bike&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;into the Salina Biking Master&nbsp;Plan. Jerry&nbsp;Hinrikus, from Salina, said that he is in no way against bike trails and biking paths, but he is vehemently against bike&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I am vehemently opposed to the&nbsp;sharrows - perception is reality. Two hundred and thirty dollars a pop for sharrows," said&nbsp;Hinrikus. " I went on Faith Drive today, Oxbow Park, one and a half miles on a low use road. A low use volume road. We got people struggling making ends meet right now. They see us spending this kind of money and they're saying it's out of control."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hinrikus&nbsp;also said that he and his wife&nbsp;went to Minneapolis, Minn. after he got out of the Navy. He said they rode all over Minneapolis and St. Paul and they&nbsp; looked at a map to&nbsp; figure out their way around town.&nbsp;

"We didn't need all this signage. You're spending money frivolously. I'm not opposed to safety and everything else but perception is reality guys."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Avid bicyclist Dave Miller, of Salina, attended the meeting to offer his thoughts on the&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I ride a bicycle all over this town - a lot. My wife and I have decided to stay in town for retirement, partly because this is such a wonderful place to ride bikes," Miller said. By NATE KING Salina PostAt Monday's Salina City Commission work session, commissioners discussed the possibility of allowing additional bike&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;in city limits with James Teutsch , public works director for the City of Salina. The session provided commissioners with an in-depth look at biking trends in the city, education and outreach on current biking trails, and discussion on whether the community is in favor of allowing bike&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials, sharrows&nbsp;first appeared in the Denver, Colo., area in the 1990s. As the name implies, it is a combination of the words, "share" and "arrow."&nbsp;&nbsp;According to a City of Salina bike sharing brochure,&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;are not classified as a bike lane.&nbsp;Sharrows&nbsp;do not create road space that is reserved for bicycles.&nbsp;&nbsp;"Sharrows&nbsp;have a purpose. They are primarily used for low use roads and low speed roads, 35 miles an hour or less, that's generally where you should expect to find them," Teutsch said. "If there are those that are on routes, that that is not the case, then we would probably want to try to identify an alternative to that particular route."&nbsp;Commissioner Karl Ryan mentioned that there is already a lack of public outreach and education pertaining to bicyclists.&nbsp;&nbsp;"Do you think it'd be useful to indicate that you don't ride your bicycle on the sidewalk," Ryan asked. "I think the biggest thing you've mentioned in here to me is going to be outreach.&nbsp; If we're riding our bikes up on the sidewalk back on the street, back and forth, the 300 or so people that are active bike riders that I know and I can be [bicycling] part of the year when the&nbsp; weather's nice. They all know what the bike map is, and they follow those. But we've got an awful lot of people, for example, I saw guy, I would say a short time ago, riding with a baby carrier on the back of his bike. He knows that he was riding the wrong way on the wrong side of the street. So it's a public education piece to me I think expanding the plan is great, but I think we need to get off the sidewalks with the&nbsp;bikes as soon or as efficiently as possible."&nbsp;&nbsp;Teutsch agreed with Ryan and reiterated that additional signs would be required to clarify where bicyclists should ride their bikes.&nbsp; &nbsp;"One of the recommendations that I would make to you is wherever there are&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;there ought to be supplemented with signs that's in accordance with the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials," Teutsch said. "But when it comes to bicycles in particular what&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp; should do is tell bicyclists which direction they should be traveling.&nbsp; I've certainly seen it coming to work on Ash Street, I see a lot of young kids riding bicycles with no lights at night and riding in the opposite direction. So there's certainly a lot of public education that needs to take place."&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The biggest issue members of the community voiced is the cost associated with the project.&nbsp;"I know that I've heard members of the public have concerns about the cost. If I'm going to follow the city manager's guidance, then I have to pay attention to this as well,"&nbsp;Teutsch said. "Prices range somewhere between $100 to $400, with the average being about $230 for a&nbsp;sharrow.&nbsp;Sharrows&nbsp;represent a quarter to three quarters of 1 percent of my budget."&nbsp;Several Salina citizens were&nbsp;present at the meeting to share their opinions on the proposed&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;Phil Black, a member of the Salina Bicycle Advocacy group spoke with caution about the use of&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;"Even though a&nbsp;sharrow&nbsp;might be there on a road, I don't know that I want a six year old out there," Black said. "On the other hand, if you're a commuter like me, some of the sidewalks, as you pointed out, are not in very good condition. In fact, I'm moving into a house where we are having the sidewalk replaced, because if you hit one of those things, you'll break a wheel."&nbsp;&nbsp;Black referenced Lindsborg and&nbsp;Manahattan&nbsp;as examples of cities that used proper signage to help mitigate bike traffic on sidewalks.&nbsp;"In Manhattan and Lindsborg you'll see signs on the sidewalk painted to say please dismount, which seems to me to be more meaningful than just a little sign," Black said.&nbsp; "It says no bicycles on the street. It's a proactive thing, a positive and not a negative."&nbsp;Black also said that he knows multiple veterans organizations that support&nbsp;bicycling&nbsp;as a way to get through challenging situations.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I found a study that showed over 50 organizations supporting bicycles for veterans who are going through paths that are challenging, and if we can help a few seniors prevent them from having to get knee replacements and if we can help a few veterans find a better path. It seems to me it's worth the cost. "&nbsp;Not everyone was in agreement on implementing bike&nbsp;sharrows&nbsp;into the Salina Biking Master&nbsp;Plan. Jerry&nbsp;Hinrikus, from Salina, said that he is in no way against bike trails and biking paths, but he is vehemently against bike&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I am vehemently opposed to the&nbsp;sharrows - perception is reality. Two hundred and thirty dollars a pop for sharrows," said&nbsp;Hinrikus. " I went on Faith Drive today, Oxbow Park, one and a half miles on a low use road. A low use volume road. We got people struggling making ends meet right now. They see us spending this kind of money and they're saying it's out of control."&nbsp;&nbsp;Hinrikus&nbsp;also said that he and his wife&nbsp;went to Minneapolis, Minn. after he got out of the Navy. He said they rode all over Minneapolis and St. Paul and they&nbsp; looked at a map to&nbsp; figure out their way around town.&nbsp;"We didn't need all this signage. You're spending money frivolously. I'm not opposed to safety and everything else but perception is reality guys."&nbsp;&nbsp;Avid bicyclist Dave Miller, of Salina, attended the meeting to offer his thoughts on the&nbsp;sharrows.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I ride a bicycle all over this town - a lot. My wife and I have decided to stay in town for retirement, partly because this is such a wonderful place to ride bikes," Miller said. LINDSBORG - If you're looking for something to do Saturday morning, check out the Snowflake Parade in Lindsborg.

"'A small parade in a small town that welcomes families and lighthearted fun' is a great description of the Snowflake Parade! Don't just come and watch, plan to be part of the fun. All snowflakes, Christmas bells, snowmen, reindeer, tomtes and ugly sweater-wearers welcome!" the Lindsborg Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau noted in its December Posten.

Parade participants are asked to line up in front of Bethany Lutheran Church, 320 N. Main Street.

The parade, down Main Street, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

After the parade, select businesses plan to have "take and make" ornaments for children, while supplies last. 

Additionally, Trinity United Methodist Church, 224 S. Main Street, plans to serve a pulled pork lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. The eat-in or take-out, free-will donation meal is to include the following.

Funds raised through the lunch will be used for church projects.
