The annual Best of KWU event is a landmark moment each year when some of the top academic work done by Coyote students is shared with an audience.

This year’s event will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Peters Science Hall 201 as part of Spring Alumni, Family &amp; Community Weekend. The event also will be streamed live and free of charge through the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/@kwustudentmedia/streams" target="_blank">KWU Student Media YouTube</a>&nbsp;page.

‘Best of KWU’ speeches to be streamed live Saturday

I was recently in a car accident that totaled my car. My old car was paid for, and the insurance company is writing it off and giving me $15,000. I’m a physical therapist who does home care treatment, so I need a reliable car for work. I’m debt-free, and I’m in the process of finishing up my emergency fund, but I can’t seem to find a car like my old 2014 Toyota Camry with all the accessories. My rental car is paid for by insurance until the end of the month, and I’ve looked at used cars at a few dealerships, but the dealers and salespeople are telling me used cars still cost the same as new ones, and that I should just finance a brand-new car. I’m not sure what to do.

Asking a new car dealer if you need a new car is like asking a dog if it’s hungry. The answer’s always going to be yes.

The smart answer, though, is this: If you’ve got a $15,000 insurance check in your hand, go buy a great, used $15,000 car. You may not be able to find the&nbsp;exact&nbsp;car you had before, right down to&nbsp;all&nbsp;the bells and whistles, but Toyota Camrys aren’t exactly rare, either. That money will get you virtually the same car—one that is very comparable in equipment, reliability, miles and overall quality to the one that was totaled.

I realize this whole thing is a big inconvenience. And you’re probably feeling a little pressure to make a decision. But the line you’re getting about used cars still costing the same as new cars is a load of crap. Used cars&nbsp;do not&nbsp;cost as much as new ones anymore. That was true for about five minutes on the back end of the pandemic, when the Mississippi River ran backwards and used cars went&nbsp;up&nbsp;in value. It was an absolute miracle!

There seems to be something in the human brain that tries to tell us we have to get an upgrade if we total a car. I want you to fight that idea, because you don’t need to wreck your&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/saving/quick-guide-to-your-emergency-fund" target="_blank">emergency fund</a>&nbsp;over something that’s not an emergency. Go online, and look around there without the pressure that always goes with being on a car lot.

And I’m just going to say this out loud: A $15,000 car today is a much better vehicle than anything I drove for the first 30 years of my life. The quality of used vehicles and the life left in them are so much greater than even a new car back in the day. You know that old saying, “They don’t make ’em like they used to”? Well, thank God for that!

But a $15,000 pre-owned car in today’s world? That’s a nice car!

Today in History - April 21

In 2019, the governors of Kansas and Missouri both committed to a truce, pausing the pointless, destructive tax border war.&nbsp; Prior to that, KC-area companies would regularly leverage millions of dollars from their respective states in order to move just a few miles across the state line.&nbsp; Waddell and Reed received $62 million to move from Kansas to Missouri, while AMC Theaters got over $21 million to move from Missouri to Kansas.&nbsp; Neither move took the respective companies out of the KC area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The result of this nonsense was millions of dollars lost to state services, most notably public schools, all for companies to relocate–not create–jobs.&nbsp; State money was in the mix, too—it was not just a Kansas City issue. The choice is then whether to cut essential services like schools and infrastructure, or make up the revenue by raising taxes on individuals and small businesses that do not have powerful, well-connected lobbyists.&nbsp; No jobs are created in this process, except of course for lawyers and lobbyists.

This is absurd.&nbsp; Fortunately, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and Missouri Governor Mike Parson agree.&nbsp; In 2019, they agreed to a tax break truce, and it is holding.&nbsp; The Missouri General Assembly also passed legislation codifying it, but only if the Kansas Legislature would pass similar legislation within two years, which they did not.&nbsp; Kelly and Parson have each been re-elected since, but to make this commitment more binding once their terms are up, the two legislatures need to renew their own deal.&nbsp; This time, the Kansas Legislature needs to reciprocate.

To be clear, both states are still gung ho about tax breaks such as the massive “APEX” deal that lured a Panasonic electric-vehicle battery factory to DeSoto. However, since 2019 there have been no massive tax packages dangled before existing KC employers to move a few blocks or a few miles.&nbsp; Yet unfinished business remains.&nbsp; Not only do the legislatures need to make the deal permanent, there is yet another issue that they need to address: a lack of tax reciprocity.

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers live in Kansas and work in Missouri, and vice-versa.&nbsp; Each one is required to file and pay taxes in both states.&nbsp; Each state offers residents a credit for taxes paid to other states, but the process is cumbersome and error-prone.&nbsp; By contrast, Ohio has had a tax reciprocity agreement with all states which it borders for decades.&nbsp; Most notably, this includes the Cincinnati area, a substantial portion of which lies in Kentucky.&nbsp; Under those agreements, one pays taxes to the state where one lives, not where one works.&nbsp; A single state tax return is filed, and that is the end of it.&nbsp; If there are any complications, the other state need only check the taxpayer’s state of legal residency.&nbsp; Kansas could also do this with Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Opportunities are being lost and time wasted because of the baffling complexity of filing two tax returns and negotiating each state’s complicated process of taking a credit for the taxes paid to other states.&nbsp; It also incentivizes many people with otherwise-simple tax status to rely on paid tax preparers, wasting money.&nbsp; But for the border issue, these taxpayers could easily complete the forms on their own.

This should not be an ideological or partisan issue.&nbsp; The Kansas Legislature needs to renew the tax truce legislation and pass tax reciprocity–the sooner, the better.

This week's 'KINA Saturday Morning' lineup

On Tuesday, during&nbsp;the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce After Hours event, The Yard extended the naming rights of The Field to JRI Hospitality, which owns and operates several restaurant brands with more than 80 locations throughout 15 states. 

The Field at The Yard, located at 138 S. Fourth Street,&nbsp;will now be known as&nbsp;the&nbsp;JRI Hospitality Field at&nbsp;The&nbsp;Yard.&nbsp;JRI Hospitality made a $50,000 donation benefitting the facility that serves softball and baseball players and coaches in the Salina area and will hold naming rights for a 10-year period. &nbsp;

“We are honored to contribute this donation to help maintain and improve&nbsp;JRI Hospitality Field at&nbsp;The&nbsp;Yard&nbsp;for the benefit of the entire community,” says Jason Ingermanson, founder and CEO of JRI Hospitality. “We look forward to a great partnership for the next decade and beyond.”&nbsp;

Funds from the donation will be used to maintain the 14,000-square feet of outdoor turf and 7,500 square feet of indoor turf at the facility including adding appropriate amounts of infill to keep the grass fibers intact and standing upright. The donation will fund other improvements including:&nbsp;

●Additional support for the fence around the infield to keep patrons safe while watching games and attending practices&nbsp;

●Additional storage areas to house equipment and keep machines, balls and other equipment out of the elements, thus prolonging the life of each&nbsp;

●Adding a “Batter’s Eye” behind center field using wind screen, which can assist batters’ visibility of the ball out of the pitcher’s hand to increase the hitter’s success rate&nbsp;

●Adding necessary equipment and additional training space outdoors&nbsp;

The Salina Police Department announced today that its&nbsp;2023 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony is set for May 17.

The annual ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m. May 17 in Jerry Ivey Memorial Park, 2465 Edward Street, and is open to the public.

Local officers being remembered are as follows.

Officer John Stonebraker, who died on Feb. 12, 1917

Officer Tom Carson, who died on Nov. 29, 1920

Wednesday morning's grand opening and ribbon-cutting at the new Miller's of Claflin/Ashley Distribution Center in south Salina was a somewhat bittersweet celebration for members of the Miller family.

One of the family leaders, William J. "Bill" Miller, was not at the celebration. Miller, 63, died in January after a nearly three-year battle with cancer. The distribution center was dedicated in his name. A plaque revealed at the ribbon-cutting is inscribed with the following.

William J. Miller Distribution Center In honor and recognition of our outstanding leader and friend. You are greatly missed. "There's customers out there, somebody go sell something!"

The new distribution center at 2610 Yost Drive contains nearly 100,000 square feet of rack space, according to information from Miller's of Claflin/Ashley HomeStores on the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce website.

"We will be the only true stocking dealer in central Kansas and one of the few in the state. What this means is the customer will be able to pick up their product or have it delivered that same day," the company noted on the chamber website.

Additionally, the Miller's of Claflin/Ashley HomeStores' service department also is a component of the new facility.

"With the technology we incorporated in the facility along with the layout and equipment, it will allow us to minimize product damage and limit mistakes. By stocking more parts for our product, any issues that customers may have will be addressed right away in most cases instead of waiting for the parts to arrive," the company noted.

The space in the new facility also allows the company to buy in larger quantities, thus enabling them to pass its savings on to customers.

Wondering where 2610 Yost Drive is? The distribution facility sits just south of W. Water Well Road, a bit north of the Salina Police Department's Regional Training Facility.

A local man was arrested early this morning after a car he was driving knocked a parked SUV up into a yard in south Salina.

Jaymie Hicks, 20, of Salina, was southbound in the 2100 block of Wesley Street when his 1997 Cadillac Catera rear-ended 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe that was parked in the street, sending it up into a yard, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 4:15 a.m. Thursday.

The Catera sustained major front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The Tahoe sustained substantial damage, Forrester said.

Hicks was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Saline Co. Sheriff's Office collecting unused meds on Saturday

A fire weather watch has been issued for some counties in our area for Friday.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a fire weather watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Friday evening for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph and relative humidity as low as 19 percent are forecast.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly. Use caution if engaging in activities that may result in a fire starting.

Stutzmans Greenhouse's plant sale fundraiser for the Salina Rescue Mission is underway.

Now in its 18th year, the fundraiser is at Stutzmans' Salina location at S. Ninth Street and W. Cloud Street. If you haven't been there yet, there's some good news. Because of the weather, the fundraiser has been extended through Monday. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If you need some help selecting just the right plants for your yard, never fear! Local master gardeners are scheduled to be on hand during the day

"It started years ago, they would bring in flowers to the Sam's Club from the Stutzmans' location in Hutch, and it was so well received that we created a location here in Salina," said Stutzmans' Shirley Miller. "Chad is such a great help to me. I don't even need to train him. &nbsp;He's just carrying soil and helping people box up and I think I told him, 'I'd hire you!' And then, the master gardeners help the customers during the day, so that actually gives us time to do the registers. So it's just been a nice collaboration with the master gardeners and the rescue mission."

Chad Young, Salina Rescue Mission executive director, echoed that sentiment.

"It has been a wonderful partnership we are so blessed to be part of," said Young. "To think we have been doing this for now 18 years and each year is a success. Thanks to Ben Miller with Stutzmans and the master gardeners, we are able to raise funds to change lives right here in Salina."&nbsp;

Buy plants at Stutzmans to benefit Salina Rescue Mission

On Wednesday, Smoky Hill, LLC, of Salina closed to traffic the intersection of W. Lincoln Avenue and Reynolds Street to repair leaking storm sewer pipes. 

Barricades at the nearest intersections inform motorists that the road is closed to through traffic. Access to all properties will be maintained. 

Weather permitting, the work will be completed in four weeks.

The $153,000 project, which also includes drainage improvements at the intersection of Ninth Street and W. Iron Avenue, was a part of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance capital improvement program.

W. Lincoln-Reynolds intersection closed to repair storm sewer

The Central Kansas District Extension Master Gardeners are ready for gardening and are jumping into spring planting season by hosting their annual fundraiser.

The Master Gardener Plant and Garden Garage Sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon May 6 in Kenwood Hall, 900 Greeley Avenue in Salina.

It will feature a Master Gardener sale of plants, garden-related items, and garage finds you won't want to miss. 

Proceeds from the Master Gardener Plant and Garden Garage sale will be used to support the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in Kenwood Park and other Master Gardener outreach activities and projects, such as the garden tour planned for 2024. 

Master Gardeners have been busy growing many unique warm-season vegetables such as heat set, patio, and heirloom tomatoes, squash, peppers, melons, eggplant, and more. The plant sale will also feature divided flowers/perennials, milkweed, houseplants, and more.

Admission to the sale is free and garden item donations are welcome.

Master Gardeners are also providing a children’s activity table during the event. 

The fundraiser sale also wiil feature the Dyck Arboretum of Hesston, which will be offering native plants, grasses, and adaptable perennials to boost your spring plans and planting for pollinators, butterflies, and much more.

Faye’s Playground will be at the sale offering unique varieties of iris and daylilies just in time for spring planting.

Paradise Ponds of Ellsworth will also have a unique selection of water/aquatic plants available for purchase.

As an added bonus, you also will be able to support the Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter by purchasing an item from their bake sale table at the event.

Master Gardener Plant and Garden Garage Sale set for May 6

Two local people were arrested after a west Salina tavern was burgled Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were sent to Hank's Tavern, 116 S. Broadway, Tuesday evening for the report of a theft earlier in the day, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

An employee told police that he had been in the tavern that afternoon, but forgot to lock the front door when he left, Forrester said. Surveillance video shows a white woman and a Hispanic man entering the tavern at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday. After a few minutes, they appear to realize that no one is in the tavern but them.

The woman is then seen removing items from behind the bar, including a bottle of beer, a cell phone, and a bank bag with cash. Total loss was estimated at slightly more than $500.

The duo was in the tavern for approximately 30 minutes, before they were seen leaving in a gold GMC Yukon with distinguishing features, Forrester said.

 </figure>The man, identified as Joseph Vela, 36, of Salina, identified the female in the video as Juli Capps, 46, of Salina. Forrester said she walked up to where the officer had stopped Vela. She was wearing the same shoes as in the video, he added. Capps also allegedly was in possession of a marijuana pipe.<figure>
