Salina Parks and Rec Summer Activity Guide out now

Several new low-temperature records were set across the area this morning, including in Salina.

On the same day that Salina recorded the hottest temperature in the nation in 1989, the city also set its low-temperature record Sunday morning. According to the National Weather Service, Salina's low temperature this morning was 27 degrees, breaking a low record of 28 degrees that was set in 1909.

“Let’s go to the port.” If that calls to mind a big harbor full of ships and seagulls, think again.&nbsp;

There are other kinds of ports such as an airport – or a railport. Today we’ll learn about a rural Kansas county that is using a port authority to support railroad infrastructure so as to benefit the local economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the last two weeks, we met Carolyn Dunn, president of the Stafford County Port Authority and past director of economic development in Stafford County. In the conclusion of this three-part series, we will learn about a port authority.&nbsp;

Stafford County is an agriculturally based county in the middle of Kansas. One of its assets is a railroad line.&nbsp;

When Dunn first took the job as county economic development director, she was approached by three companies that were interested in establishing a large grain car loading facility along the railroad in the county. In each case, the deals did not pencil out, and the companies went elsewhere.&nbsp;

“We had to figure out how we could make this viable for them,” Dunn said. “Rather than those companies having to absorb all the cost of land and track, we looked for a way to structure this so that it makes it advantageous to attract businesses.”&nbsp;

Her research on alternatives led to something called a port authority. This happened to be the same legal structure that a Kansas leader named Huck Boyd had successfully used to support railroad service after the Rock Island Railroad closed in northwest Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A port authority is a quasi-governmental, special use district authorized to operate transportation infrastructure. In a sense, it might function like an airport or water port, but in Kansas it has been used with railroads. Typically, the port authority would own the land and railroad sidings and then lease access to companies that ship goods.&nbsp;

Stafford County Economic Development sought to use the port authority to establish a local rail transloading facility with industrial park. This would mean building a loop to the main railroad with space for loading and unloading facilities. This would allow trains and trucks to receive and transfer cargo such as grain or manufactured products.&nbsp;

Establishing a port authority requires state legislative approval. The Kansas Legislature authorized the Stafford County port authority in 2014. Stafford County Commissioners authorized formation of it in 2015. A Port Authority Board of Directors was appointed by the county commissioners. The county then contracted with a K-State agricultural economics professor to conduct a feasibility study on how best to implement it.&nbsp;

A grant was received to do the engineering and legal work. Potential sites were evaluated. A large grain handling company signed a letter of intent to build a unit car loading facility there.&nbsp;

Five million dollars was raised for the project. In 2022, a 256 acre site was purchased near two major highways and next to the railroad right of way.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dunn transitioned from economic development director to her new role as president of the port authority. Much work remains to be done on the project.&nbsp;

If all goes as planned, this project would stimulate an estimated $15 million in private investment initially by an anchor grain-handling tenant. Improved efficiency in grain transportation should improve local grain prices, adding $7.5 to $9 million annually into the local economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“In addition to the seasonal shipment of grain at harvest time, we think this can benefit industrial shippers in the county by providing a local point of access to the railroad for companies that don’t have their own rail siding,” Dunn said.&nbsp;

One example would be Hudson Cream Flour, a business we have previously profiled.&nbsp;&nbsp;That company is located in the rural Stafford County community of Hudson, population 95 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Altrusa International of Salina, KS Inc. has announced that Big Brothers Big Sisters Salina Executive Director Amanda Otto is its Altrusan of the Year for the club year 2021-2022.

Each year, Altrusa Salina may choose to select a member in good standing whom the board of directors and award committee feel illustrates a strong commitment to Altrusa and its mission, with outstanding effort shown in creating or leading club projects. Altrusa Salina is part of a network of 23 clubs in the four-state District Eight region, and one of 289 clubs across eight countries.

“Altrusa International of Salina, Inc. is honored to choose Amanda Otto for this honor,” said Club President Brenda Smith. “Since becoming a member, Amanda has proposed a dynamic, mutually beneficial partnership between Altrusa Salina and BBBS Salina, which has strengthened and shaped the club’s relationship with her non-profit. Also, Amanda has taken a lead role on Altrusa Salina’s Service committee, helping drive the creation of a newly furnished Reading Room for local residents and staff of a local nursing home and rehab facility to enjoy.”

Otto has been an Altrusan for almost three years and has invited many professionals to be part of the Salina club, with three becoming new members in 2022. In addition to her leadership of BBBS Salina, Otto is a member of Thursday Noon AMBUCS, Rotary International, Salina, and serves on the board of directors for Salina Area United Way. Her BBBS team recently completed a successful Bowl For Kids Sake event that involved 88 teams and raised $67,000.

Salina club names Otto Altrusan of the Year

Advantage Trust Company has announced four recent staff promotions.

 Those promoted include Jamie Hayes to senior vice president and operations officer, Jessie Crouch to vice president and operations officer, Amy Schreiner to senior vice president and trust officer, and Corbin Munson to trust officer.

After seven years with ATC, Jamie Hayes was promoted to senior vice president and operations officer. She grew up in McPherson County and is passionate about working hard and being a team player. 

“Jamie does a fantastic job heading up ATC’s operations. Her dedication and work ethic are second to none,” said President and CEO Brian Boyer.

 Hayes said she enjoys the work she does at ATC, but you can find her spending time with family at the lake in her free time.

Jessie Crouch was promoted to vice president and operations officer and has been with ATC since 2017. Boyer describes Crouch as “an integral part of our operations team that knows how to get things done.” Crouch is a Saline County native who now enjoys Lindsborg's small-town life, where she enjoys music, gardening, and household DIY projects with her family. She feels fortunate to be part of a dynamic group that gives clients the highest level of personal service possible.

Amy Schreiner, who Boyer said, “always goes the extra mile when taking care of clients,” was promoted to senior vice president and trust officer. Schreiner grew up in Frankfort and has been with ATC since 2012. She finds joy in connecting with others, building relationships, and helping people achieve their goals. She enjoys spending her free time cheering on the Kansas State Wildcats and visiting her family farm. Schreiner has said that her job “has shown me that even during difficult times, a helping hand can make a profound impact on someone's life.”

Corbin Munson was promoted to trust officer after one year at ATC. Munson said he is passionate about helping others, and Boyer agreed, “Corbin is a great team member and is always willing to do what is necessary to take care of our clients.” Munson enjoys watching baseball and working on computers in his free time.

Water Ceremony for Smoky Hill River set for April 30

MCPHERSON –&nbsp;One-of-a-kind classic automobiles will be on display during the 23rd&nbsp;Annual C.A.R.S. Club Motoring Festival at McPherson College next month.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6.

A few of the cars expected on the field this year include the 1951 GM LeSabre concept car, the 1969 Chevrolet Astro III concept, and a 2024 Chevrolet all-electric Blazer EV SS, all from the General Motors collection, as well as a 1955 Ghia Gilda.

Each year, the student-run car show attracts rare vehicles from across the country and expects 350 to 400 vehicles to be on display throughout the campus grounds this year. Alongside the rare classic cars, automotive restoration students also present vehicles they are currently restoring.

“The car show serves as one of the biggest networking and alumni-gathering events for the college,” said Matt Kroeker, car show chair, “Every year, hundreds of cars ranging from student projects and local show winners, all the way up to Pebble Beach best-of-show contenders, converge on the college lawn for a unique day celebrating McPherson's heritage as a leader in the antique automobile industry.”

At the car show this year, the students, alumni, and staff who recently found out their 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet was accepted to Pebble Beach will be recognized, and the car will be on display.

In addition to the wide variety of classic automobiles, the event will also feature entertainment provided by the McPherson College Jazz Band and the McPherson High School Jazz Band. The Model-T Team will demonstrate at 2 p.m., just before the awards ceremony. 

Building tours of Templeton Hall, home of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration Program, will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Complimentary trolley service will be available between campus and Main Street from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There is no charge for spectators. Food trucks will also be available on campus to purchase food and beverages.

Car enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in a Cruise-in on May 5 on Main Street in McPherson beginning at 6 p.m. No registration or entry fee is required for this event, which serves as a sneak peek at what will be on the show field and an opportunity for any car or motorcycle owner to display their rides in an informal show.

Pre-registration for Saturday’s car show is available online at a discounted rate through today. Registration can also be made on the day of the show. The Salina Senior Theatre Project will open its third season in May with Kathleen Crandall's comedy, Shenanigans at the Blue Pelican Inn.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. May 5-6 in the Salvation Army Chapel, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue, according to information from cast member Bob Sears.

Tickets go on sale Monday and seating is limited to 100 seats per performance. Advanced tickets will be on sale for $8 and can be purchased at the Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth Street. Tickets also can be purchased at the door the night of each performance for $10.

Refreshments will be provided and a drawing for door prizes will take place after the performance, Sears noted.

Shenanigans at the Blue Pelican Inn will be directed by Mary Shelton.

Get your shenanigans fix with Salina Senior Theatre production

During the spring and early summer one of the most common plant problems often inquired about is that of herbicide injury.   The spring and early summer is a popular time to spray weeds in the lawn and landscape, but unfortunately many herbicides can be very damaging to desirable landscape plants as well.

All herbicides are capable of drifting and broadleaf weed herbicides are especially prone to &nbsp;moving with the breeze.&nbsp; This herbicide drift is what often causes damage to numerous other plants in the landscape.&nbsp; Damage will be found on trees, shrubs, vegetables, and other landscape plants when herbicides are incorrectly applied.&nbsp; Some herbicides are more volatile, meaning that the warmer the temperature is, the more likely the spray is to drift as an invisible vapor in the air.

Many forms of 2,4-D can volatilize at or above temperatures in the mid-80s and this means that&nbsp;spraying without caution on a warm and windy spring or summer day can create clouds of vapor that can potentially harm non-target plants.&nbsp;It is also important to keep in mind that drift can occur from many blocks and even miles away if the wind is blowing, so pinpointing the source can be difficult.

Symptoms of herbicide injury can vary, but usually include new leaves and shoots being shrunken, curled, puckered, bent, twisted, or distorted.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tomatoes are very sensitive to herbicide injury and are often one of the first plants to show damage.&nbsp; Redbuds and grapes are also very sensitive.&nbsp; All plants can be susceptible depending on the amount of herbicide in the air and their stage of growth.

After herbicide injury has occurred all you can do is wait.&nbsp; Many woody plants will simply grow out of it later on.&nbsp; If the drift was light there will likely be no long-term effects.&nbsp; Plants may look bad for several weeks or even longer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plants with injury should be kept from incurring more stress&nbsp;as much as possible and may need supplemental water during times of heat, wind, and drought.

If herbicide drift occurs in a vegetable garden the yields can be greatly reduced and sensitive plants like tomatoes or green beans can be easily stunted or killed. If herbicide drift occurs early in the growing season it is usually best to replant any vegetables that were significantly affected.

The best way to prevent herbicide drift is to avoid spring and early summer applications of herbicides as much as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Plants are easily damaged in spring and early summer because they are actively growing and have young growth that isn’t hardened off.&nbsp;If herbicides will be applied plan to apply very carefully on a calm day when the temperature isn’t too hot.&nbsp;

Fall applications of broadleaf herbicides to control common lawn weeds such as dandelions, henbit, chickweed, and bindweed are preferred and safer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Apply fall applications in October through early December depending on the weather. This is the ideal time for broadleaf weed control because many landscape plants are going dormant and weeds are much more likely to translocate the herbicide to the plant roots for a better kill. Remember to be very careful when applying any herbicide early in the growing season as it is easy to unintentionally damage other plants in the landscape.&nbsp;Spring herbicide injury can lead to an entire season of unsightly growth or even long-term damage on other landscape and vegetable plants.&nbsp;&nbsp;Before applying any herbicide, always read and follow label directions very carefully.

 </figure><h2>What to do</h2>After herbicide injury has occurred all you can do is wait.&nbsp; Many woody plants will simply grow out of it later on.&nbsp; If the drift was light there will likely be no long-term effects.&nbsp; Plants may look bad for several weeks or even longer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plants with injury should be kept from incurring more stress&nbsp;as much as possible and may need supplemental water during times of heat, wind, and drought.If herbicide drift occurs in a vegetable garden the yields can be greatly reduced and sensitive plants like tomatoes or green beans can be easily stunted or killed. If herbicide drift occurs early in the growing season it is usually best to replant any vegetables that were significantly affected.<h2>Be careful</h2>The best way to prevent herbicide drift is to avoid spring and early summer applications of herbicides as much as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Plants are easily damaged in spring and early summer because they are actively growing and have young growth that isn’t hardened off.&nbsp;If herbicides will be applied plan to apply very carefully on a calm day when the temperature isn’t too hot.&nbsp;Fall applications of broadleaf herbicides to control common lawn weeds such as dandelions, henbit, chickweed, and bindweed are preferred and safer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Apply fall applications in October through early December depending on the weather. This is the ideal time for broadleaf weed control because many landscape plants are going dormant and weeds are much more likely to translocate the herbicide to the plant roots for a better kill. Remember to be very careful when applying any herbicide early in the growing season as it is easy to unintentionally damage other plants in the landscape.&nbsp;Spring herbicide injury can lead to an entire season of unsightly growth or even long-term damage on other landscape and vegetable plants.&nbsp;&nbsp;Before applying any herbicide, always read and follow label directions very carefully.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a freeze warning in effect from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 26 are expected.

Freeze conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

City of Salina seeks volunteers for boards, committees

Five years ago: A nearly naked gunman carrying an assault rifle stormed a Waffle House restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee, shooting four people to death before a customer rushed him and wrestled the weapon away; after a manhunt lasting more than 24 hours, Travis Reinking was arrested on charges including four counts of criminal homicide. (After being ordered to receive treatment for schizophrenia, Reinking was convicted on four counts of murder and sentenced in February 2022 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.) An Islamic State suicide bomber attacked a voter registration center in the Afghan capital, killing 60 people and wounding 130 others.

One year ago: Russia shifted a dozen crack military units from the shattered port of Mariupol to eastern Ukraine and pounded away at cities across the region as the two sides hurtled toward what portended to be an epic battle for control of the country's industrial heartland. Israeli police in full riot gear stormed a sensitive Jerusalem holy site sacred to Jews and Muslims after Palestinian youths hurled stones at a gate where they were stationed. Grow Ellsworth County ELLSWORTH- Following Grow Ellsworth County's second annual local Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, state qualifiers Thaddeus, Cruz, and Owen Donley of Donley Business Ventures, LLC and Layton Leiker of Leiker Lures competed at the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge at Kansas State University on Thursday, where both walked away with top accolades and prizes.

The Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge is a state sanctioned competition sponsored by the Kansas Masonic Foundation and Kansas Masons in partnership with Kansas State University and the Network Kansas Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) Series to promote entrepreneurship and small business development in Kansas.

 The competition is for student-created, managed, and owned ventures. The local competition occurred on Feb. 20, where nine individuals and seven teams competed in four areas of business: executive summary, elevator pitch, trade show, and formal presentation.

Leiker, a student at Ellsworth  Jr./Sr.  High School, qualified for the competition by winning the local contest with his hand-crafted fishing lures. 

Thaddeus, Cruz, and Owen Donley, reigning Ellsworth County champions in 2022, entered the wild card competition, where they qualified to compete at the state level with their lawn care and real estate development concept.

Both teams competed against more than 70 state-qualified entries. Teams were judged based on their executive summary, a series of mock board room panels, and a trade show. The results were:

Thaddeuz, Cruz, and Owen Donley | Donley Business Ventures -Finalist Rating ($1,700)

Grow Ellsworth County serves as the lead agency to drive economic health and prosperity to Ellsworth County.

"YEC is amazing program that is creating entrepreneurs, future business owners, and leaders in our community. I was immensely proud of Layton, Thad, Cruz, and Owen, who represented Ellsworth County well and put in the work and effort. This community should be proud. Our future is bright," Stacie Schmidt, executive director for Grow Ellsworth County said.&nbsp;

"First of all, I am very glad that I was able to represent Ellsworth County in the statewide Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge," Leiker said. "Secondly, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me or my business in one way or another. From business mentors to family and friends, I have had as much encouragement and support as possible.
