Salina City Commission faces busy Monday agenda

A wind advisory has been issued for some counties in our area early Monday.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 1-9 a.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

West winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

The strong winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

CONCORDIA - The Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery will be the upcoming production by Cloud County Community College's Theatre Department.

The spring play is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. March 5 in Cloud County Community College's Cook Theatre. Tickets are $5 per person. Cloud County Community College students will be admitted at no charge.

Junior officers were in charge of Smoky View 4-H Club’s most recent meeting on Feb. 19. Officers Kate Griffin, Wyatt Griffin, and Beau Johnson learned how to run a 4-H meeting by leading one. The club also gained another member - Ames Ast.&nbsp;

Many important topics were also discussed during the meeting, including voting on the club’s budget, congratulating 4-H Quiz Bowl and Gavel Games participants, fundraising, and preparations for the upcoming Club Day on Feb. 25.

Members then had some fun singing a song and playing a game similar to football.&nbsp;

The club will meet again to have fun and discuss business at 4 p.m., March 19 in the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;

Smoky View 4-H’s junior officers lead meeting

Staff members from Tammy Walker Cancer Center, Salina Regional Health Center, and the Masonic Cancer Alliance (MCA) gathered at Tammy Walker Cancer Center earlier this month with community leaders, elected officials, and others to celebrate the role the center and Salina Regional played in the University of Kansas Cancer Center earning comprehensive designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

In 2012, KU Cancer Center became the 67th cancer center to be designated by the NCI; today there are 71 NCI-designated cancer centers. Last summer, KU Cancer Center earned comprehensive cancer center designation, the highest level of recognition awarded by the NCI. Only 52 other cancer centers have earned comprehensive status. Comprehensive cancer centers are leaders in cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Comprehensive designation is a crucial milestone in the journey to conquer all cancers. This designation brings increased access to more federal funding and research dollars. For the 4.5 million people living in KU Cancer Center’s catchment area – all of Kansas and 18 counties in western Missouri – comprehensive status provides access to more tools and more funding to help minority and at-risk populations. This includes finding better ways to prevent cancer, diagnose it earlier, accelerate treatment and clinical trial access, increase survival rates, and improve overall quality of life.

Without the collective strength of KU Cancer Center and MCA partners like Tammy Walker Cancer Center, comprehensive designation would not have been possible. As a clinical research partner of the Masonic Cancer Alliance, Tammy Walker Cancer Center played a critical role in earning comprehensive designation. Tammy Walker Cancer Center has consistently been one of the highest enrolling sites for clinical trials in the MCA.

“We are blessed to have a wonderful team of physicians and staff members at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center delivering state-of-the-art care to patients from Salina and north central Kansas,” said Joel Phelps, president/CEO at Salina Regional Health Center. “Our partnership with the University of Kansas Cancer Center through the Masonic Cancer Alliance allows our patients access to many of the same clinical trials patients in Kansas City have access to – right here, close to home.”

Tammy Walker Cancer Center recognized for aiding KU Cancer Center

Stir up a bit of Bizet, Broadway and The Beatles, and what do you get?

A soufflé of a pops concert from the Salina Symphony titled, appropriately enough, Love is All You Need.

The concert’s title comes from the lyrics of one of The Beatles’ most popular songs and will feature an orchestral tribute to the Fab Four encompassing the range of their unmatched musical legacy.

“I’ve done this Beatles tribute before, and it’s great,” said Yaniv Segal, conductor and music director of the Salina Symphony. “It includes both well-known and less known Beatles songs. It follows the scope of their music, which I think is timeless and generation-less.”

The Salina Symphony’s All You Need is Love concert will begin at 4 p.m. March 5 at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Guest performer will be Samantha Rose Williams, a Philadelphia-based mezzo-soprano and crossover singer who has performed in numerous operas and such classic musicals as My Fair Lady and Sweeney Todd.

Williams will perform several Broadway-based romantic ballads during the concert, including I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady, I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,&nbsp; from Evita and&nbsp; On the Steps of the Palace from&nbsp; Into the Woods.

“(Williams) is a wonderful singer joining us,” Segal said. “She has such a great stage presence and can sing both Broadway and opera.”

Orchestral selections performed by the Salina Symphony, in addition to The Beatles tribute, will be a mixture of timeless romantic classical works and contemporary romantic symphonic movie scores.

Selections will include the overture from the Disney animated classic Beauty and the Beast, Claire de lune by Debussy, L’amour est un oiseau from Carmen by Bizet, the waltz from Sleeping Beauty&nbsp;by Tchaikovsky and Across the Stars, the love theme from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones by John Williams.

“Somewhere you’ve heard a lot of this music, whether it’s in movies or commercials,” Segal said. “In this concert, I’m trying to blur the lines between what's considered pop and light classical.

The concert will end with Love is All You Need, the Beatles tribute arranged and orchestrated by Bruce Healey.

“The Beatles laid it down - it’s just incredible what they accomplished,” Segal said. “Everyone knows their music, so if people want to sing along with it, I’ll be more than happy.”

Segal will host a pre-concert talk beginning at 3 p.m. March 5 in the Stiefel Theatre’s Watson Room. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. Those attending are instructed to enter through the main theater doors.

Samantha Rose Williams earned a bachelor’s degree at Stanford University and a master's degree in music in voice performance at the University of Michigan. In addition to performing on opera and musical stages throughout the U.S., Williams is manager of institutional giving for Opera Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.

Williams said she was invited by Segal to sing with the Salina Symphony after a previous collaboration at Ann Arbor, Mich., was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.

“We had done all of our rehearsals just before everything shut down,” she said. “Then he sent an email asking what I was doing this year and said he would be honored if I would do this concert with him.”

Segal said that after their first concert was canceled, he wanted to work with Williams again if given the opportunity.

“Some tunes I had suggested she do, but I also asked what she would like to sing,” he said.

During her visit to Salina, Williams plans to visit Southeast of Saline High School and Kansas Wesleyan University to perform selections from her most recent artistic project American Patriots, a staged song cycle that seeks to examine patriotism from three different American perspectives: African American, Native American and white working class American.

“It’s a newly commissioned work that encourages people to think about American patriotism,” she said.

Williams said she is excited about performing with the Salina Symphony.

“Singing in front of an orchestra is what it’s all about, using every centimeter of your body to make sure you project over all those instruments,” she said.

Segal said he didn’t want to limit himself to one genre of music when putting together what he called a “pops crossover” concert.

“It’s meant to be a lighter concert, and now is a good time for that,” he said. “It’s just an afternoon of great music that just happens to be about love.”

Santa Fe Avenue.Guest performer will be Samantha Rose Williams, a Philadelphia-based mezzo-soprano and crossover singer who has performed in numerous operas and such classic musicals as My Fair Lady and Sweeney Todd.Williams will perform several Broadway-based romantic ballads during the concert, including I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady, I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,&nbsp; from Evita and&nbsp; On the Steps of the Palace from&nbsp; Into the Woods.“(Williams) is a wonderful singer joining us,” Segal said. “She has such a great stage presence and can sing both Broadway and opera.”Timeless classicsOrchestral selections performed by the Salina Symphony, in addition to The Beatles tribute, will be a mixture of timeless romantic classical works and contemporary romantic symphonic movie scores.Selections will include the overture from the Disney animated classic Beauty and the Beast, Claire de lune by Debussy, L’amour est un oiseau from Carmen by Bizet, the waltz from Sleeping Beauty&nbsp;by Tchaikovsky and Across the Stars, the love theme from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones by John Williams.“Somewhere you’ve heard a lot of this music, whether it’s in movies or commercials,” Segal said. “In this concert, I’m trying to blur the lines between what's considered pop and light classical.The concert will end with Love is All You Need, the Beatles tribute arranged and orchestrated by Bruce Healey.“The Beatles laid it down - it’s just incredible what they accomplished,” Segal said. “Everyone knows their music, so if people want to sing along with it, I’ll be more than happy.”Segal will host a pre-concert talk beginning at 3 p.m. March 5 in the Stiefel Theatre’s Watson Room. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. Those attending are instructed to enter through the main theater doors.<figure>

 </figure>Guest performerSamantha Rose Williams earned a bachelor’s degree at Stanford University and a master's degree in music in voice performance at the University of Michigan. In addition to performing on opera and musical stages throughout the U.S., Williams is manager of institutional giving for Opera Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.Williams said she was invited by Segal to sing with the Salina Symphony after a previous collaboration at Ann Arbor, Mich., was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.“We had done all of our rehearsals just before everything shut down,” she said. “Then he sent an email asking what I was doing this year and said he would be honored if I would do this concert with him.”Segal said that after their first concert was canceled, he wanted to work with Williams again if given the opportunity.“Some tunes I had suggested she do, but I also asked what she would like to sing,” he said.During her visit to Salina, Williams plans to visit Southeast of Saline High School and Kansas Wesleyan University to perform selections from her most recent artistic project American Patriots, a staged song cycle that seeks to examine patriotism from three different American perspectives: African American, Native American and white working class American.“It’s a newly commissioned work that encourages people to think about American patriotism,” she said.Williams said she is excited about performing with the Salina Symphony.“Singing in front of an orchestra is what it’s all about, using every centimeter of your body to make sure you project over all those instruments,” she said.Pops crossoverSegal said he didn’t want to limit himself to one genre of music when putting together what he called a “pops crossover” concert.“It’s meant to be a lighter concert, and now is a good time for that,” he said. “It’s just an afternoon of great music that just happens to be about love.”Tickets for the Salina Symphony Love is All You Need concert start at $29. But what exactly is a so-called home warranty?

There are different types and options depending on the company and amount you pay, but home warranties typically cover replacements and repairs for things like appliances or air conditioning systems. They last for a set amount of time and — unlike builder warranties for new homes, or warranties included with some products — they cost extra.

And after looking at the details, you may find that a home warranty duplicates coverage you already have. Or covers only part of a product. Or makes it nearly impossible to get repairs done when you need them.

So here are some things to think about before committing to a home warranty:

●Is it likely to save you money?&nbsp;Consider both the upfront cost&nbsp;and&nbsp;costs that may be hidden, like deductibles or fees you need to pay each time products are serviced.

●What are the limitations?&nbsp;Are there limits on the amounts you can be reimbursed? Is accidental damage covered? Are certain appliances or systems not included? Are there restrictions or fees for cancellation?

●Does the claims process seem difficult or slow?&nbsp;Waiting a long time to get paid back can reduce the value of having coverage.

●Does the company have a good reputation?&nbsp;A home warranty is only as good as the company responsible for coverage. Search for the name of the company and words like “review” or “complaint” to see if people have had issues in the past.
