On this episode of King in the Community, I sat down with April Rickman, president of the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalinaKSOptimistClub">Salina Optimist Club</a>,&nbsp;to hear why folks in the Salina community should consider joining the organization.

Optimist Club is an international organization with the goal of developing an optimistic philosophy of life utilizing the tenets of the Optimist Creed: “to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs; to inspire respect for the law; to promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people; to aid and encourage the development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world.”

Earlier this month, the club held its Unsung Heroes award ceremony. The event recognizes local area high school students who have overcome a hardship and remain optimistic in light of their struggles. Learn about the banquet and more in this episode of King in the Community.&nbsp;

LINDSBORG - On Saturday, the City of Lindsborg, along with residents and distinguished guests, will celebrate the grand opening of the Alma Swensson Memorial Garden. 

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 25-30 minutes. The garden is located in Swensson Park.

Many residents and artists have been involved with this project from early on, and some will be on hand at the ceremony to give remarks or otherwise help usher in its opening.

●Local artist/sculptor Michaela Groeblacher with an artist statement

●Local designer Lindy Nelson with an artist statement

●Mayor Chuck Shultz will do the honors with the ribbon cutting

The Memorial features a garden with landscape designed by local designer Lindy Nelson. A statue of Alma Swensson stands tall in the middle of the garden and is the vision and work of local sculptor, Michaela Groeblacher. Boulders and arbor frames also flank the garden as well.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend the ribbon cutting and help celebrate the legacy of Alma Swensson.

Lindsborg is well-known as "Little Sweden" and that distinction starts with the legacy of Alma Swensson.

She arrived in Lindsborg in 1880 as the new bride of Rev. Carl Swensson, pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church, and immediately established herself as a pioneer and driving force in helping shape the community we know and love today. Below is a sample of her accomplishments and contributions to our state:

●Upon her arrival in Lindsborg, she worked with the mostly Swedish population, most of whom still did not speak English, and taught them the language through music.

●In 1892, more than 30 years before women had the right to vote, Alma hosted 50 women from across the country as part of the Augustana Woman’s Missionary Society. The organization empowered women to draft by-laws, board governance, organize events and learn to raise money. Part of her role was editor of the monthly magazine which reached 24,000 subscribers and told of the group’s efforts that lead to hospitals and schools being built in India, China, and Africa.

●After the passing of her husband, Alma stayed in Lindsborg and hosted college and community events, family gatherings, and distinguished visitors to Lindsborg.

City staff, residents, and volunteers have dedicated years of their hard work and effort to bring the Alma Swensson Memorial Garden to reality. There is not a better representation of community and fellowship that represents not only Lindsborg, but the spirit of all Kansans, than Alma Swensson.

Grand opening of Alma Swensson Memorial Garden in Lindsborg set for Saturday

GLENDALE - A Denver man was injured late Wednesday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover in northwestern Saline County.

A 2016 Jeep Cherokee driven by Matthew Lucas, 41, of Denver, was northbound on N. Brookville Road when it left the roadway on the west side and rolled several times, coming to rest on its top, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of N. Brookville Road and Pleasant Hill Road just south of Glendale.

Soldan said Lucas was able to get out of the vehicle, but sustained injuries and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.

The wreck remains under investigation pending the results of a blood alcohol test, Soldan said.

Rollover in NW Saline County injures Denver man

Police are investigating an early Thursday morning drive-by shooting in north Salina.

A 40-year-old Salina man was in a back bedroom of his residence in the 1300 block of N. Third Street at approximately 12:15 a.m. Thursday when he heard multiple gunshots, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

When officers arrived, they located three bullet holes in the front window and siding of the residence. Additionally, they located eight 9mm shell casings in front of the residence, Forrester said. Additionally, the man's LG television was shot.

Forrester said total damage was estimated at $1,500.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the man's Ring camera. Additionally, the man shared some potential suspect information with police, Forrester said.

North Salina house damaged in early Thursday drive-by shooting

A Burr Oak woman is missing two rings and believes they were stolen while she was staying in Salina earlier this month.

Tamera Jeffery, 60, of Burr Oak, told police that while she was staying at Salina Regional Health Center's Morrison House April 10-12, she had put her wedding ring and a silver antique filigree ring in her purse, which was in her 2019 Dodge Ram pickup, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

It is unknown where the theft actually occurred as Jeffery visited several locations while staying in Salina, he said.

The wedding ring had diamonds, silver, and rose gold, and was valued at $5,000. The other ring also had a diamond and was valued at $400.

Forrester said there were no signs of forced entry.

According to information released this morning, Salina Downtown Inc. has been designated as an Accredited Main Street America™ program for meeting rigorous performance standards. 

Annually, Main Street America and its partners announce the list of accredited programs to recognize those programs' exceptional commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Approach™.

“We are very proud to acknowledge this year’s 862 Accredited Main Street America programs, and their steadfast dedication to nurture economically and culturally vibrant downtown districts,” said Hannah White, interim president and CEO of Main Street America. “The increase in the size and impact of our network speaks volumes to the power of the Main Street movement to respond to the needs of local communities and drive innovative solutions.”

Salina Downtown’s performance is annually evaluated by Kansas Main Street, which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify the local programs that meet rigorous national performance standards, according to information in a news release issued this morning by Salina Downtown. 

To qualify for Accreditation status, communities must meet a set of rigorous standards that include commitments to building grassroots revitalization programs, fostering strong public-private partnerships, nurturing economic opportunity for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and actively preserving historic places, spaces, and cultural assets.

“We are honored to be reaccredited as a 2023 Designated Kansas Main Street. Our 2023 Main Street Reaccreditation recognizes all the hard work Salina Downtown Inc did in 2022 and the gains we have already made in 2023. We will continue to build on our growth and our goal for Salina Downtown to be a destination,” Salina Downtown Executive Director Leslie Bishop said.

In 2022, Main Street America programs generated $6.2 billion in local reinvestment, helped open 7,657 net new businesses, facilitated the creation of 29,174 net new jobs, catalyzed the rehabilitation of 10,688 historic buildings, and leveraged 1,528,535 volunteer hours, the news release noted. On average, every dollar that a Main Street program spent to support their operations generated $24.07 of new investment back into the downtown communities.

Collectively, two million people live or work within the boundaries of designated Main Street America districts. An estimated workforce of 1.1 million people contribute their skills and expertise to advancing the missions of these historic downtowns and commercial corridors.

Students studying computer science and virtual reality at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;now have a highly advanced educational space that utilizes ultramodern technology: a new extended reality, or XR, lab space. The new&nbsp;extended&nbsp;reality lab, or Immersive Technology Classroom, combines virtual, physical and augmented reality technology that students will utilize to elevate their education. The facility features an immersive video wall showing multiple views from several different devices and an immersive audio system built into the room to provide a much more functional space for students. XR has a wide range of applications in various fields, including education, entertainment, health&nbsp;care, engineering and many more. It allows users to experience and interact with virtual objects and environments&nbsp;naturally and intuitively, leading to new possibilities in education, training and research. According to Michael Oetken, assistant professor of integrated studies, the new space will provide numerous opportunities for students in&nbsp;programs like computer systems technology, digital media technology, machine learning and autonomous systems, and web development technology. It will also&nbsp;allow curriculums on campus and other industries to collaborate in the XR lab. "The new XR lab will focus on junior and senior level capstone courses with the utilization of virtual reality,"&nbsp;Oetken said.&nbsp;"The space will provide more capabilities for advanced technologies that students can work and research. We will be able to make immersive technologies span across multiple K-State Salina curriculums where students in other programs can also get involved." The new XR lab features all-new equipment, including untethered XR systems, such as Oculus Quest Pro, Varjo products, Ultraleap products and the HTC XR Elite. This equipment will educate students and prepare them for their future careers. Area students receive Foundation for Agriculture scholarships

Theatre Atchison’s production of The Wall was selected from among six productions to represent Region V at the American Association of Community Theatre Festival (AACT Fest) in Louisville, Ky., in June.

The Region V Festival was hosted by Theatre Salina April 20-23. Theatres from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Theatre Atchison participated in the adjudicated performances over the weekend.&nbsp;

Directed by Theatre Atchison Artistic Director Layne Roate, the two-man play tells the story of the two thieves in their cell before they were crucified with Jesus. “Superior” was the word the three judges used in describing the show, and both actors, Cameron Carlson and Charles Peitsch received acting awards. Roate also received a Best Director award.&nbsp;

Other shows receiving accolades were; The End of the Beginning&nbsp; (FungusAmongus Players, Minn.) Dennis Kelly (Acting), Linda Metcalf (Costumes) and, Ron Hunderford (Sets); Didn’t See That Coming, Aberdeen Community Theatre (S.D.), Haley Salem and Tony Kollman (Acting); and Tracks County Seat Theater Company (Minn.), Ruthie Bruer (Acting), Joel and Jenn Soukkala (Sets), and Joel Soukkala and John Justad (Lights). Tracks was also the runner-up production.&nbsp;

Theatre Salina, which hosted, has been to nationals twice. Once in 2001 with its production of Wit and again in 2019 with Silent Sky.

Executive Director Michael Spicer said, “ It was such a great weekend of theatre representing the best from each state. Although there were several productions that could have represented Region V well, we are truly excited for Theatre Atchison to represent Kansas and Region V at nationals.”&nbsp;

ELLSWORTH COUNTY - Beginning Monday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin&nbsp;resurfacing about 15 miles of Kansas Highway 14 in Ellsworth County.

Work on K-14 will continue north from the Rice/Ellsworth County line to the south city limits of Ellsworth.

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct one 12-foot lane of traffic through the construction zone. Drivers should be prepared for a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules.&nbsp;

APAC-Kansas Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $3.2 million project to be completed in July, weather permitting.

Resurfacing to begin Monday on K-14 in Ellsworth County

In recent years, there has been a growing movement across the United States to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. However, despite the progress that has been made, there are still many states that are actively working to roll back these protections. 

On April 18, though legislators were on spring recess, a group of LGBTQ+ rights advocates from north-central Kansas and Hays gathered at the steps of the Kansas capitol building to voice their disapproval of <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/08610551-4b22-402a-8780-21cc534fe597">recent bills</a> passed by the Kansas legislature that pertain to the rights of Kansas' transgender population.

Kevin Lynn, president for North Central Kansas Pride, Fred Bannon, Valerie Linenberger, Linenberger's daughter Morgan and her dog, Tikiu represented North Central Kansas Pride at the protest.&nbsp;

"God makes no mistakes," Valerie said. "Transgender people exist. They are real human beings and their lives and rights should be just as protected as my own or any other heterosexual, cisgendered person."

Valerie said the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation passed this session only "perpetuates hate," which in her opinion is one of the greatest threats facing the country.

The bills passed by the Kansas legislature this session would restrict the rights of transgender individuals including prohibiting them from participating in sports from kindergarten to the collegiate level and would make it more difficult for them to access healthcare and other essential services.

With signs and various pride flags in hand, the group, made up of both LGBTQ+ individuals and allies, chanted, "Five ,six, seven, eight, separate the church and state." The protesters also called for equality and justice for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. One of the members of the group of protestors from Hays, T, who identifies as non-binary, said not only do they feel scared and angry about the current state of LGBTQ+ rights, but many of their transgender friends feel the same way. In particular, the issue regarding possible genital inspections for transgender students who wish to play sports.

"I'd rather them just ban us from being in sports then allow for the continued abuse of transgender students," T said. "We deserve the same rights and protections as anyone else. I encourage legislators to listen to those of us who know what we are talking about."

On Feb. 22, the issue regarding possible "medical examinations" for transgender students, in order to determine their gender prior to participating in sport, was discussed on the floor of the Kansas House. Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, who sponsored the HB2238 this session, engaged in a lengthy back and forth debate with Rep. Brandon Woodard, D-Lenexa. During the discussion she did not contest to the fact that students might need to be examined by a doctor for an official gender determination.

Woodard asked Wasinger, "We don't have a birth certificate, how are they suppose to prove it?" To which she replied, "That would be a medical examination by their doctor that they would fill out for a sports physical."

It was no coincidence that a majority of protestors in Topeka on April 18 were from Wasinger's district.&nbsp;

Protestor, LGBTQ+ advocate and native Kansan, Cosmo Jarboe, who identifies as transgender, said Wasinger's argument that HB 2238 protects women's rights is "ludicrous."

"It's not just competitive sports its intermural sports and other activities that transgender students are being excluded from," Jarboe said. "As someone who doesn't participate in sport, it won't directly impact me, but it is about taking bits and pieces. The erasing of intersex people is horrifying. They say transgender people are just trying to manipulate youth into getting reassignment surgery, and that is simply not true. "

Although the legislation does not mention the words transgender or intersex, Jarboe said bill's lack of using the word, transgender, makes it all the easier to discriminate trans Kansans.&nbsp;

"Show me one young man who wants to play on the girls softball team. There isn't one," Jarboe said. "They [Republican lawmakers] are acting as if there are people who want to play on the opposite team to get more awards or recognition, I've not met a single transgender person who fits that description."

Even though Kansas Republicans hope to override Governor Laura Kelly's veto of the legislation limiting trans rights, Jarboe said he has hope.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I hope that it is not so grim. Being here with my wonderful community is the kind of thing that makes living a little easier," Jarboe said. "It seems like recently I've noticed more hate from the people around me simply because I am trans. Friends are coming out and saying things that are really hurtful and offensive. I get it all the time at school. It didn't always use to be that way."

"As someone who doesn't participate in sport, it won't directly impact me, but it is about taking bits and pieces. The erasing of intersex people is horrifying. They say transgender people are just trying to manipulate youth into getting reassignment surgery, and that is simply not true. "Although the legislation does not mention the words transgender or intersex, Jarboe said bill's lack of using the word, transgender, makes it all the easier to discriminate trans Kansans.&nbsp;"Show me one young man who wants to play on the girls softball team. There isn't one," Jarboe said. "They [Republican lawmakers] are acting as if there are people who want to play on the opposite team to get more awards or recognition, I've not met a single transgender person who fits that description."<figure>

 </figure>Even though Kansas Republicans hope to override Governor Laura Kelly's veto of the legislation limiting trans rights, Jarboe said he has hope.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I hope that it is not so grim. Being here with my wonderful community is the kind of thing that makes living a little easier," Jarboe said. "It seems like recently I've noticed more hate from the people around me simply because I am trans. Friends are coming out and saying things that are really hurtful and offensive. I get it all the time at school. It didn't always use to be that way."

LGBTQ+ rights advocates protest anti-trans legislation

In celebration of Arbor Day this Friday, Kansas Wesleyan University will be holding an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony and planting three trees on campus.  

The public is invited to come to the Outdoor Living Room (west of Pioneer Hall) on campus at 1 p.m. Friday to participate.  

A Sterling Silver Linden, a Jane Magnolia donated by Landscape Consultants, and an Oklahoma redbud donated by the City of Salina Parks and Forestry will be planted to mark the occasion. 

The Sterling Silver Linden is an adaptable and pollinator-friendly shade tree

The Jane Magnolia is a later blooming magnolia that will announce spring on campus with its beautiful flowers.

The Oklahoma redbud is a tough and reliable small tree that blooms early and is also a great resource for pollinators.

Students, faculty, and staff at KWU and City of Salina Parks and Forestry will assist with the 2023 planting ceremony.

K-State Research and Extension Horticulture Agent Jason Graves, who is a part of the KWU Tree Advisory Committee, said Arbor Day is a perfect time to promote tree planting and the benefits of trees in our city.

"Trees without a doubt provide many benefits to our farms, homes, and cities that we often forget about. Trees create biodiversity, provide countless ecosystem services, enhance property value, and even improve our quality of life and health. Planting a tree is a very strategic investment for our future," Graves noted in a news release. 

Kansas Wesleyan takes its trees seriously and the KWU Tree Advisory Committee, composed of students, community members, and faculty, has been working over the last five years on a tree inventory to identify and tag more than 230 trees on campus.

A new project to create an online arboretum map will begin in late 2023. 

Kansas Wesleyan earned Tree Campus Higher Education recognition for the first time in 2018 and has been a recognized Tree Campus for five years running. The City of Salina is also recognized as a long-time Tree City USA Community.

Stolen car belonging to Hays woman found in east Salina

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in March. This is unchanged from 2.9% in February and an increase from 2.4% in March 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 2,200 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 2,900 over the month, while government increased by 700.

The Saline County jobless rate fell slightly from 3.2 percent in February to 2.8 percent in March. Most counties in central Kansas also saw a slight drop in the unemployment rate. In western Kansas, Trego County's unemployment was the highest jumping from 3.5 percent in February to 4 percent in March.

Since March 2022 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 37,100. This change is due to an increase of 33,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,900 government jobs.

The April 2023 Labor Report will be released on May 19.

Jobless numbers down slightly in Saline Co., across the region

By GREG DOERING Kansas Farm Bureau &nbsp; Land is the foundation of agriculture, whether it’s the fertile, deep soils along river bottoms that nourish row crops or the rolling hills of grass waiting to be eaten by livestock. Everything a farmer or rancher does begins with the land. In Kansas, many farmers and ranchers have inherited at least a portion of their land from a family member and they have a strong desire to pass it on to the next generation. Tending the ground isn’t just an homage to their heritage, it’s also an equity stake in the future. It’s quite an honor to follow in the family footsteps, especially when those treads go back a century or more. But it’s also a burden to be the owner and caretaker of the family legacy. The expectations aren’t just preserving the land. Instead, the charge is to steadily improve it and leave it in a better condition. It’s almost a sacred oath landowners adhere to. Owning land is a long-term investment, and today’s farmers and ranchers use the latest research and implement the best practices to get the most out of their land while preserving its productive capacity for the future. They also understand at some point the technology they employ now will be as out of date as the moldboard plow and flood irrigation are today. They’ll implement incremental changes and seek out new ways to work the soil to benefit their bottom line and ensure a stronger foundation for the succeeding generation. Private property rights are crucial for farmers and ranchers to know they’ll benefit from all the work they put in to growing the safest, most wholesome food in the world. Owning land means having the privilege of deciding its best use. Thankfully, the government can’t prescribe crop rotations, order a rancher to only raise a specific breed of cattle or pass legislation that every barn needs to be painted red. At its core, private property is about more than just owning land – it's about having the freedom to create, innovate and invest in the future knowing you’ll reap the fruits of your own labor. Appeals to the common good are nice, but self-interest is more powerful at aligning individual incentives to benefit society at large. Farming and ranching are businesses, but their success or failure is not measured by quarter or fiscal year. The real scoreboard is every successive generation that can find new ways to make an old vocation better. Their ancestors instinctively understood land was not a short-term investment. Over the long haul, it’s a store of both value and values. Tending the soil and caring for livestock are required down payments for the reward of leaving a legacy. Stewardship is a way of life, and it all begins with the land.

INSIGHT: Life and land

Today is Wednesday, April 26, the 116th day of 2023. There are 249 days left in the year.

On April 26, 1986, an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine caused radioactive fallout to begin spewing into the atmosphere. (Dozens of people were killed in the immediate aftermath of the disaster while the long-term death toll from radiation poisoning is believed to number in the thousands.)

In 1607, English colonists went ashore at present-day Cape Henry, Virginia, on an expedition to establish the first permanent English settlement in the Western Hemisphere.

In 1865, John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, was surrounded by federal troops near Port Royal, Virginia, and killed.

In 1913, Mary Phagan, a 13-year-old worker at a Georgia pencil factory, was strangled; Leo Frank, the factory superintendent, was convicted of her murder and sentenced to death. (Frank's death sentence was commuted, but he was lynched by an anti-Semitic mob in 1915.)
