LINDSBORG - The 2023 version of the Messiah Festival begins later this month and tickets for some events already are on sale.

Bethany College and Lindsborg will be offering many opportunities to participate in the 142nd Messiah Festival of the Arts, including the following.

March 27-April 10: Attend the Juried Student Art Exhibition at Mingenback Art Center, located on the campus of Bethany College, 335 E. Swensson Street.

March 30-April 1: Cabaret: A Musical Revue will be performed both evenings with wine and hors d'oeuvres at 7:30 p.m. in the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, 401 N. First Street.

March 31: The Jazz Walk: Lousiana! Birth of Jazz, downtown Lindsborg

April 3: Chasing History: A Conversation About the Many Editions of Handel's "Messiah" - a presentation by Mark Lucas, Ph.D, associate professor of music, artistic director and conductor of the Messiah Festival of the Arts. The presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Pearson Chapel at Bethany College, 335 E. Swensson Street.

April 3: Ages 4-12 are invited to attend The Lord Is My Shepherd Chalk Talk by Shelly Carlson of Lindsborg. The chalk talk will take place at Mabee Welcome Center on the campus of Bethany College at 7 p.m. with adult supervision for the children. A great way for parents to attend Chasing History while the children have fun with Carlson!

April 7: Bach's Passion According to St. Matthew will be performed in Presser Hall Auditorium, located on the campus of Bethany College, 335 E. Swensson Street at 7:30 p.m.

Messiah Festival of the Arts 2023 offers variety of events

On March 1, 1974, seven people, including former Nixon White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman, former Attorney General John Mitchell and former assistant Attorney General Robert Mardian, were indicted on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in connection with the Watergate break-in. Five years ago: President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would impose steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, escalating tensions with China and other trading partners and raising the prospect of higher prices for Americans. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which selects winners of the peace prize, announced that someone using a stolen identity nominated Trump for the award. The committee leader said it appeared the same person was responsible for forging nominations in 2017, as well.

One year ago: Russian forces escalated their attacks on crowded urban areas, bombarding the central square in Ukraine's second-biggest city and Kyiv's main TV tower in what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called a blatant campaign of terror. In his first State of the Union address, President Joe Biden aimed to rally the American public to bear the costs of supporting Ukraine's fight to stave off the massive Russian invasion. He also outlined his plans to combat soaring inflation.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Commerce on Tuesday announced multiple opportunities to support the creation of murals and public art in the state through coordinated funding programs from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC) and the Office of Rural Prosperity (ORP). 

The programs will provide funding for communities to use public spaces for the purposes of artistic use and creative endeavors.

“Public art is one of many factors that drives decisions about where people will stop for a meal, open a business or move their family,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Commerce looks forward to partnering with communities across Kansas on this important quality-of-life opportunity that supports economic growth and community pride.”

The programs are designed to utilize artists, creative interventions, and arts organizations to increase community vibrancy and provide space for artistic expression and public engagement.

KCAIC’s Mural and Public Art Program applications are open through March 13 to all 501c3 organizations, units of local government, and federally recognized tribes across Kansas. The maximum request is $10,000. A 100% match is required for the award which must be at least 25% cash match and up to 75% in-kind match. Projects must be completed by December 31, 2024. Only applicants from communities with a population fewer than 15,000 are eligible. A 100% match is required for the award which must be at least 25% cash match and up to 75% in-kind match. Projects must be completed by Dec. 31, 2023. Local, area students earn degrees from Wichita State

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced nine short line rail maintenance and rehabilitation projects are being awarded nearly $5 million as part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Short Line Rail Improvement Fund (SLRIF) program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“These nine rail improvement projects will strengthen Kansas’ agriculture supply chain, connecting our farmers and ranchers to regional, national, and international markets,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “My administration will continue to invest in needed and commonsense infrastructure improvements like these to maximize our state’s economic potential.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Six SLRIF recipients will use the funds for major track rehabilitation and rail replacement; three projects were awarded funds for siding extensions and storage tracks. These projects support rail enhancements to expand carload capabilities, reduce truck traffic, increase operating speeds, and improve operating efficiencies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

State funding for the nine projects will be enhanced by a 30% match from each recipient, resulting in a total rail infrastructure investment of nearly $6.5 million.&nbsp;

The program received 19 applications requesting more than $18 million in program funds in this third and final round of funding for the program through IKE, the state’s 10-year bipartisan transportation program. SLRIF made available $5 million each for state fiscal years 2021, 2022, and 2023.&nbsp;

“The Short Line Rail Improvement Fund is another opportunity for KDOT to partner with industry to help modernize and make needed improvements,”&nbsp;Calvin Reed, acting secretary of transportation, said.&nbsp;“Projects awarded through this program serve both short line railroads and their customers by investing in critical infrastructure that helps drive the Kansas economy.”&nbsp;

Salina community members are collecting bottled water for the citizens of East Palestine, Ohio, the site of the Feb. 4 derailment of a train carrying toxic chemicals.

According to information provided by organizer Rosemary Mai, bottled water will be collected at the following two locations.

Long McArthur, 3450 S. Ninth Street Bottled water can be dropped off until noon Friday

Doug Bradley Trucking Warehouse, 246 E. Berg Road Collection will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Saturday. United States flags will be placed to direct people from S. Ninth Street to the warehouse.

While water donations are preferred, cash or checks also will be accepted. Checks should be made out to Rosemary Mai.

Mai noted that Doug Bradley Trucking is donating services to deliver the water. The delivery date is March 6.

Police are looking for two people who were seen on surveillance video breaking into a pickup in east Salina early Sunday morning.

A 49-year-old Salina man told police that his 2000 Chevrolet 1500 pickup was parked in front of his residence in the 1800 E. Crawford. Surveillance video shows that at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, two people wearing facemasks and gloves came from an open field to the west of the property and used some sort of prybar to get into the bed of the pickup, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The duo took a cordless Stihl leaf blower and a string trimmer. Each was valued at $400, Forrester said.

The side window of the pickup also was broken, which caused the vehicle alarm to go off. The two people then fled the scene.

Forrester said a search of the area turned up a cordless 18-volt drill and some citrus hand cleaner, but police are unsure to whom those belong.

A Masterworks concert at Kansas Wesleyan University Friday will feature performances by two of the university's instrumental ensembles.

The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Sams Chapel and is open to the public at no charge. 

The concert will feature the KWU String Orchestra, conducted by Leonardo Rosario, and the KWU Wind Ensemble, conducted by James McAllister. 

The String Orchestra will perform three works composed within the past 10 years. Rhythm Dances, by composer Brian Balmages will open the concert, followed by Miraj by composer Richard Meyer. The final orchestra selection will be Martin Ellerby’s St. Mark’s Suite.

The Wind Ensemble will perform John Philip Sousa’s march The Fairest of the Fair, a world premiere performance of Kansas composer Grace Baugher Dunlap’s Solstice Fanfare&nbsp;which was commissioned by KWU, two works by composer Percy Grainger - Irish Tune from County Derry and Shepherd’s Hey -&nbsp;and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, featuring Gustavo do Carmo as the piano soloist.

Command Sgt. Maj. Rob Istas will accept authority as the command sergeant major for the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division in a ceremony Saturday.

The ceremony is scheduled to be at the 35th&nbsp;ID Headquarters, 4 Wagon Wheel Way at Fort Leavenworth. The ceremony will begin following the 35th&nbsp;ID Change of Command ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m.

In this position, Istas will be the advisor to the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division commander on issues regarding the professional development, readiness, training, utilization, health, morale and welfare of the division’s Soldiers.

“I am pleased that I was selected to return to the 35th Division,” said Istas. “I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to serve in this historic division and can't wait to get started.”

Istas will replace Command Sgt. Maj. Steven Stuenkel as the senior enlisted leader for the division.

“My command philosophy has always been, work hard, train hard and play hard and you will build a cohesive team,” said Stuenkel.

Command Sgt. Maj. Rob Istas enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard in February 1987 as a military police officer in the 35th Military Police Company, Topeka. In 1999, he transferred to the Kansas Regional Training Institute in Salina, where he served as an instructor for the Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course and Officer Candidate School. He also served as the Teach, Assist, and Counseling (TAC) noncommissioned officer for the OCS.

In July 2006, he was selected as first sergeant of the 35th MP Company and served in that role through a deployment to Iraq in 2007-2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In January 2010, Master Sgt. Istas transferred to the 35th Infantry Division at Fort Leavenworth as a provost marshal - operations NCO. In the summer of 2010, Istas Interstate transferred to Missouri National Guard and continued to serve in the 35th Division.

In July 2011, Istas was promoted to sergeant major and transferred to the 205th MP Battalion in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, as the operations sergeant major. In December 2013, Istas was selected as the command sergeant major of the 203rd Engineer Battalion in Joplin. In May 2018, Istas was selected as the command sergeant major of 70th Troop Command at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

In February 2019, Istas was named command sergeant major of the 35th Engineer Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. In February 2022, Istas returned to 70th Troop Command at Lebanon, Missouri, as the senior enlisted leader.

Istas earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in business management from Washburn University.

His military education includes Brigade Commander/Command Sergeant Major Pre-Command Course, Combat Engineer Battalion Pre-Command Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, United States Army First Sergeant Course, Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer Course, Small Group Leader Instructor Training Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, and Primary Leadership Development Course.

Istas’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (5th Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Iraqi Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” Mobilization Device, and numerous other awards and decorations.

Istas is a 28-year veteran of the Kansas Highway Patrol and is assigned as a Lieutenant in charge of the Breath Alcohol Unit.

Command Sgt. Maj. Steven Stuenkel enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1986 as a combat engineer. He has served in numerous command positions during his 36 year career, including command sergeant major, 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division, command sergeant major, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 35th&nbsp;Engineer Brigade – Kuwait; command sergeant major, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 203rd&nbsp;Engineer Battalion – Afghanistan; first sergeant, Company B, 110th&nbsp;Engineer Combat Battalion; operations sergeant, 135th&nbsp;Support detachment – Iraq; platoon sergeant, Company B, 110th Engineer Combat Battalion Corps, squad leader, Company C, 110th&nbsp;Engineer Battalion; and team leader, Company C, 110th Engineer Battalion.

Stuenkel’s military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, First Sergeants Course; Sergeants Major Course, Brigade Pre-Command Course, and Air Assault Course. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Columbia College.

Smoke Modeling Tool to be activated on Wednesday

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) reminds Kansans that March and April are the months when large areas of the state’s rangelands are burned, especially within the Flint Hills. 

These burns help preserve the tallgrass prairie ecosystem, control invasive species, reduce woody encroachment from species such as Eastern Red Cedar, and provide better forage for cattle. Prescribed burning also reduces the risk of wildfires and is effective in managing rangeland resources. 

Smoke from the burns can influence the air quality of downwind areas. The use of smoke management techniques is vital to reduce air quality and health impacts.

The computer models use fire data and current weather conditions to predict the potential contribution of smoke to downwind air quality problems. There are approximately 2.2 million acres burned on average in the Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma each year.

“This is the thirteenth year we have been able to provide this important tool for the prescribed fire community,”&nbsp;said Jayson Prentice, meteorologist at the KDHE Bureau of Air. “We continue to encourage ranchers and land managers to utilize smoke modeling resources such as the smoke modeling tool to mitigate potential air quality impacts.”

Prescribed burns release large amounts of particulate matter and other pollutants that can form ozone. Particulate matter and ozone can cause health problems, even in healthy individuals. Common health problems include burning eyes, runny nose, coughing, and illnesses such as bronchitis. Individuals with respiratory issues, pre-existing heart or lung diseases, children and elderly are more vulnerable to experience symptoms.

Steps to protect your health on days when smoke is present in your community include:

●Healthy people should limit or avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.

●More vulnerable people should remain indoors.

●Help keep indoor air clean by closing doors and windows and running air conditioners with air filters.

●Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

●Contact your doctor if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue.

Health advisory, safety tips issued for Flint Hills burning season

Saline County Commissioners will have a busy agenda for their meeting Tuesday.

The program would provide services at no cost to the county as all services would be billed to the patron's insurance or would be covered by self-pay, according to information in the request for action from Senior Services.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to consider approving the 2023 vision for the county. The document is an update of the vision document for 2022. The document includes five key focus areas: county workforce, communication and outreach, working relationships, physical and economic community health, and service and infrastructure.

A minor earthquake rattled part of eastern Saline County Sunday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.1 magnitude quake struck at 11:38 a.m. Sunday southwest of Solomon. It was centered south of E. Mariposa Road between N. Donmyer Road and N. Gypsum Valley Road.

Minor quake rattles part of eastern Saline County Sunday

Superintendent/ Foreman/ Construction Laborer/Carpenter/Concrete Finisher

Lancaster Construction, a local contractor in the concrete and light commercial construction is seeking driven individuals in the areas of concrete, carpentry, and general labor. Individuals successfully gaining employment will be willing and able to assist in any aspect of the project at hand. The willingness to learn and develop a wide range of skills will be imperative.

●Ability to perform general labor tasks, demolition, clean up, shovel/raking, and material handling

●Assist project foreman or superintendent with the task at hand

●Form, place, and finish different types of concrete structures and slabs

●Frame and construct different types of structures: wood framing, metal stud framing, metal building, post frame building

●Follow and abide by all safety rules and regulations.

●Be a valuable team member with a good attituded and strong work ethic.

●Employment is conditional upon successfully passing drug screening.

●Starting wage of $20.00-30.00/HR based on experience
